Chauncey Billups (photo. adidas)If you were pulling for the Sixers to at least make last night’s Game Six interesting, you didn’t want to get an e-mail like the one Jed sent out amongst the Dime crew during the first quarter, the one that read: “I’m not sure if Philly is going to score in this game.” … After finally getting on the board, the Sixers scored just 12 points in the opening quarter and found themselves down by 18 at the half. Early in the third quarter, with Jason Maxiell throwing down dunks with no one in the camera shot and Doug Collins writing Philly’s eulogy with somber lines like “This is too bad,” the only question was whether it would be a 20-piece McNugget or a 30-piece … Rip Hamilton led Detroit with 24 points, and had Willie Green running around like he was lost in the maze from The Shining. Seeing as Rip crucified Willie throughout the series and had a clear mismatch, why did Mo Cheeks refuse to make an adjustment? Would it have been so radical to try Lou Williams or Rodney Carney on Rip, just to see if it worked out? … Rip, by the way, may not be a full-fledged member of the Michael Redd/Manu Ginobili Hair Club for Men yet, but he’s definitely browsing the brochure … Chauncey Billups added 20 points and 7 dimes with just one turnover, completing what had to have been an agonizing series for Andre Miller. Remember when ‘Dre came out looking like an All-Star in the first game? After that he got exceedingly closer to “mediocre,” capped by last night’s 11-point, 2-assist, 4-for-16 shooting performance … At least the Philly fans were nice. Despite the blowout they gave the team a standing ovation in the final minute as thanks for a good season. Yeah, the Sixers finished under .500, but they got back to the playoffs and gave a superior Detroit team a tough time in the first round. No one would have predicted that from them going into the year … Anyone care to explain what Sam Dalembert was doing with his hair? The mohawk was bad; braiding the mohawk so it looked like he had a drag-racing strip in the middle of his head was worse … Collins compared Jason Smith to a young Mehmet Okur because of his size and shooting ability. Smith is faster and not as ground-bound as Memo — and he’s a little more willing to stick his nose in there and take a hit — but otherwise the comparison isn’t too far off … There was a play in the first half where Willie Green went up for a tough shot in the lane and the court mics caught him screaming “AND-ONE!” Don’t get ahead of yourself, man: you shot 64 percent from the stripe in the series … We had a Kevin Ollie sighting. He checked in at the very end of the first half and immediately ate a step-back jumper from Chauncey at the buzzer … D-Wade was in the TNT studio, subjecting himself to endless clowning about the Star Jones rumors. Flash wasn’t as smiley-faced as guys like Chris Webber or Jalen Rose have been on TV, especially when talk turned to the Miami Heat. He did reveal that new coach Erik Spoelstra helped him a lot in developing his pull-up jumper … Yesterday on DimeMag.com we posted our second edition of the Playoff Players Hit List, where we rank who’s playing the best in this postseason. Chris Paul had the top spot last week; was Kobe good enough in knocking out the Nuggets to knock CP off the pedestal? And how far did Steve Nash fall after getting lit up by Tony Parker? … Kevin Durant won the Rookie of the Year in a vote that wasn’t as close as we expected. KD got 90 of the 125 first-place votes, with Al Horford getting 30 and Luis Scola getting the remaining five. Al Thornton finished 4th in the voting and Jamario Moon was 5th … Hawks coach Mike Woodson was all upset over the whole thing, calling it a “travesty” that Horford didn’t at least get Co-R.O.Y. honors. “We haven’t had a power forward/center come in our league and do what he’s done in I don’t know how many years,” Woodson said. “I mean, come on, man.” (Maybe Woodson should be more worried about figuring out when to play Joe Johnson.) If Horford had actually averaged a double-double instead of falling just short we’d have more sympathy, but Durant has to get credit for dropping 20 points a night (comparable to LeBron and ‘Melo as rookies) against defenses geared to stop only him because the Sonics were so terrible … Dennis Rodman found himself in trouble again this week, getting arrested Wednesday on suspicion of felony domestic abuse. Rodman was allegedly drunk and grabbed his girlfriend’s arm hard enough to cause bruising. Sadly, this isn’t surprising at all. Rodman has attempted various comebacks into the public eye (”Celebrity Mole,” various reality shows and other money-making acts of desperation) and it’s getting increasingly difficult to remember him as just a solid basketball player … And remember when The Worm got into wrestling? With only one NBA game last night that left some open time on the TV for the Dime crew, and a couple of us wound up watching “TNA Impact!” The main event? A tag match involving Kurt Angle and Scott Steiner. Angle looks a lot smaller than his WWE days (Is he off the “substances”?), while Steiner is just a mess. He’s still humongous, but he’s got these pockets of flab hanging off of places where there used to be muscle and his chest (where he’s sporting a large cross tattoo now) looks almost caved in. Not to mention Steiner was obviously gassed after about three minutes in the ring. It’s time to actually sit in the recliner instead of applying it, Scott … We’re out like the Sixers …

Well I wanted co ROY but after Kidd and Hill thats not gonna happen again. The NBA seems to hate splitting an award and would rather just make the controverial decision. KD was most deserving so Im not mad but Horford’s overall body of work to me was better and deserving of the award, o well at least he’ll be on the All Rookie team. I honestly think that Melo and Bron should have split it though because as good as Bron was, Melo had similar stats and got his team into the postseason but thats just me

I was hoping for a co-winner too.Despite Durant putting up stats his team was a punching bag for the league this year.Horford mean while is a big part of the Hawks breaking the longest playoff drought in the NBA.That should have counted for something.

Funny how most everyone is OK with having co-Rookie of the Year, but imagine the outcry if Kobe and Chris Paul were named co-MVP.
May 2nd, 2008 at 3:31 am
What is this!? says:
You know I was thinking, that Sixer team now has a real PG to run the offensive sets (something they didn’t have since Eric Snow got traded), some of the younger players are matured and starting to try to step up and contribute..but in situations like this what they are missing is a closer, someone that steps up when the game is on the line. That team would be so dangerous right now if they had a big time scorer. You know a player like Allen Iverson or someone like that, oh wait…
May 2nd, 2008 at 3:32 am
Suciniac says:
@Austin
Kobe is going to win MVP,it’s as good as done. They didn’t give him when he averaged 35 PPG,they didn’t give it when he took a mediocre teams to the playoff. This year it’s sort of a,”Sorry,it took so long buddy” thing.
I would still say CP3 deserves it more but I am 100% certain it will go to Kobe.On a side note why is it taking so long to hand out the MVP trophy??Didn’t Dirk get his before the playoffs started?
May 2nd, 2008 at 3:40 am
Austin Burton says:
The voting takes place before the playoffs, but they name the MVP last out of all the awards, usually in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Dirk got his last year after Dallas has already been eliminated.
I wasn’t arguing Kobe versus Chris Paul per se, more just saying that people wouldn’t stand for co-MVPs, whereas co-ROY is generally deemed acceptable.
May 2nd, 2008 at 3:48 am
Suciniac says:

And big up the sixers for not getting swept. We knew Detroit would eventually finish them, but they still get some credit.
More important is tonight’s Cleveland game, that shit should be entertaining, I am hoping it goes to 7 games still
I think Lebron is going to unleash some shit though, cuz he mos def. mad at himself for missing that lay up.
And Boston damn well better finish off the Hawks cuz they can’t let this shit go to 7, and take chance at catching a L.
question, where is Avery going next?
I think he should go to T-dot. The knicks i don’t know who the hell can coach them, but I am really hoping Scottie coaches the Bulls. That would be sick

2 Easy - they gave co ROY again to Brand and Stevie Franchise. Makes you wonder though, how dominant Brand was in his rookie year. He averaged something like 18, 10 and 2 blocks. His Chicago team did suck but he was also the focus of the defense like durant..

djKianoosh says:
i’m down with co-mvp’s kind of ignores the meaning of “most” but that’s aight. not a big deal.
sixers need to improve their shooting. the players are aight. sammy needs to play within himself. maybe mo cheeks can experiment with Smith and Dalembert on the court together. you could have a real big lineup if you put reggie evans at the 3, and iggy at the 2. it’s not something you’d start with, but for a stretch it could cause some matchups.. anyway, good improvement year, so hopefully they can build on it..

See if they did R.O.Y. and MVP by East and West then this is all cool. They def. should switch it that way. The more awards the better. Not as many snubs that way and I put that word on Jose.
Philly tried hard. I have to respect the effort. Seems Detroit figured them out and as Chaunc said, now they are back to playing together and got that chemistry going and it’s appears that way.
Tonight is going to be ill.
Houston fighting for their playoff life.
Washington fighting for their playoff life.
Atl. fighting for their playoff life.
Should be interesting.
Not that anyone cares but Grant Hill got the good sportmanship or good citizen award or something lol.
The Bulls and Avery seem like a good look to me.
So lets see we got the Star Jones and Dwayne rumor along with the Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey rumor.
Wild out!
Last I heard Angle did quit with different pills so that might be why ol dude is smaller.

(lakers fans would cry mor ethen hornets fans by far though)

What CP3 has done this season is just amazing though.
I mean, he has carved up every turkey that has been put in front of him with Derron Williams being the exception.
Seeing as the Hornets didn’t even get to the playoffs last year, I’m not gone lie, I would probably give it to him. And I am a Kobe fan all day.
The Hornets also have a fire offensive system though. i mean it’s perfect for the pick and roll all day, just like orlando. They have a sleak, fast big man in Chandler who patrols the lanes like a cop, then you have Peja and Mo pete if you double on Paul or Chandler, then you have David West who will light you up from 15 feet. I mean, how and the world can you stop that. Then Julian Wright, and Bonzi off the bench. They could be a problem for the spurs.
@Gee
I’m saying
Houston wins tonight
Atlanta gets eviscerated
Washington wins by like 2 points unless Lebron goes into superman mode like last year and starts eating everyone for breakfast. If he starts acting like a chump. And Gee you know I’m a Lebron fan to the heart, and starts shooting freakin jumpers all game. Then yes Cleveland will lose tonight.
Kurt Angle is small cause he’s off the juice!!
And Yeah Scott. There are no words to give an accurate description of that catastrophe!

And Why amd I starting to like Deshawn Stevenson? I hated dude until this playoff series.
I always thought he was silly for turning down that contract with orlando.

GEE...BREAKOUT! Before ya get bumrushed... says:
Chuck I have to think your predictions are right. Although if Atlanta had a differenct coach (one that acutally could) then I would say they would even things up.
Based on emotion alone they may jump out and be able to squeek one out. Still you know Boston is going to be all over Joe and Josh, so who scores then? It might be a wrap for them.
I don’t expect LeBron to pull up a lot, but he most def. will be hitting that hole like a man tonight I think. I think he isn’t pleased about the whole rough stuff and out to prove.
Yo does anyone remember the Steiner Brothers when Scott was actuall small I guess you could say. They were on the whole being from Michigan thing.

Josh Smith is a young Memo? How far off could that comparison be? That is like saying Dwight is a young Jerome James. If the Hawks can get a real centre sometime in the next couple of years and move Al to his natural PF position they would have a REALLY nice front line. Long-term Horford is a better prospect than Durant unless durant can add some major bulk. Even at the Awards event yesterday he looked stickman skinny.
I hope last night’s loss was enough to convince the Sixers that Iguodala is not a superstar and should not be paid like one. Iggy is a nice SG with a full skill set but if Philly blows their cap on him the franchise is doomed to be a middling team until his contract ends.
Also, he is too small to play SF as Tayshaun showed us by owning him night after night in this series (Prince shot above 80% again last night)

Angle is smaller because of his spinal cord injuries. He had to slim down to ease the load on his spine.
Avery Johnson isn’t going to T.O. They’ll give Sam Mitchell another year to see if he can show and prove. He had a horrible roster to work with this year and Colangelo will make some changes and see what happens.

Dennis Castro says:
I was at the game last night, and I wanted to give this team a standing O at the end, but them getting blown out by 30 annoyed me. Once Maxiell hit like an 18 ft J, I had had enough.
I expected Mo to have this team ready, but Detroit wasn’t playing around last night. They were FOCUSED, you could tell.
I think last night proved Willie is a 6th or 7th man off the bench. Why not think about starting Lou at the 2 next year?
And I’m not even going to get into Iguodala. He could have punished Prince on the block but chose to take f’in step back jumpers over all 23 ft of arms by Tayshaun. Ironically, Tayshaun has become Andrew Toney for Detroit everytime they play us. He shut down AI in playoff series past and now he’s shut down Iguodala.
Nice job by Detroit, when they’re locked in they can beat anyone. Can’t wait for the Rasheed-KG matchup…

May 2nd, 2008 at 8:52 am
djkianoosh says:
Castro you are on the money with Iguodala. I can’t stand it when he settles for jumpers. It’s not like he’s that consistent with his J at this point in his career anyway. So why not drive and kick? I think Iggy is more dominant at the 2 (and he must improve his J). but in the East during the regular season, he can get away with being a 3. If you must have Iggy and Dalembert on the court, you need two other dirty work forwards who will bang and board. Add dre miller to that and you have a nice squad. maybe thaddeus young is one of those guys. maybe jason smith is the other. but for whatever reason, we never seem to land a quality big. but if you’re serious about a championship, you need one to go against: KG, Duncan, Sheed, Howard, Amare, etc etc..

i plan to drop to 190-200 over the next year. (we have a tourney this weekend, national rank jiu jitsu tourney, and the weight classes go from heavy to super heavy at 225, it is 200-224.5 then 225+ so i wanted to stay the hell away from the supers, i train witha guy who is in that class and he is 6′9 and 290+/- in that class.)

we also train the “guardian angels” and police, womens self defense, kids the works. we have pro fighters and guys who have made the “big time” (ufc) drop in to train with eric (head instructor).

gee,
i have seen a couple “iron ring” shows and while the fights are not bad, it really shows a ton of ignorance to the sport by the “onlookers” we have sat and watched a few and laugh when someone says “hey look out for that triangle choke” and the guy is not even anywhere near the other guys head (gotta have the neck to choke someone). like i said the fights are generally not to bad. the biggest problem most people have with MMA is the ground fighting (which is what i do mostly), they want a KO or a submission which is always nice but most people boo when the fight hits the ground (its boring like the spurs, but it wins!)
never been a big fan of toughman myself. they have been around for ever and the rules are a bit odd. the ones i have seen dont do much to hurt mma because they are more of a couple untrained boxers trying to box.
kimbo will be a MONSTER when he gets a little more training. right now he has only faught scrubs though, elitexc doesnt want him to get in a fight that is even close so they are not putting him up against anyone yet. he has more potential then just abotu any fighter i have seen though. he is one of those guys you dont want to get hit by. he is training with bas rutten though and that is a HUGE plus in his corner. bas is one of the funniest guys ever but he is one bad man too.

Toughman is funny to me more than anything. I remember when they started bringing stars in to fight. Like nerd turned porno star “Screech” from “Saved By The Bell”.
Kimbo is focused and elitexc is smart to bring him along slowly and let him get even more of a fan base while he learns the sport. Dude is vicious though. He said he always wanted to fight Mike Tyson.
That would have been interesting and I think Mike would have taken it, but Slice might have gotten one in on Mike.
I think had they taken Brock Lesnar along slowly and put him against lower opponents it would have worked better, than him losing his first match.
Floyd Mayweather was poppin once about MMA, he since has apologized. But boxers should stick to boxing. Floyd would have gotten his $$$ whipped! He was smart though and went and made a few mill. in Sports entertainment…wrasslin!

i agree brock lesnar should not have been fighting in the ufc yet too. he had one fight against a guy who was a joke and finished him in like 45 seconds. thing is the ufc is all about the $$$$$$$$ and brock got a sweat deal. he got paid $500,000 for that fight PLUS a % of PPV. he made a million on that fight easy, and the guy who beat him (frank mir) got paid $40,000 and a ppv% so he made something along the lines of $350,000 when it was all said and done.
dana white (president of ufc) offered mayweather $2,000,000 out of his own pocket, plus a $1,000,000 purse to fight, PLUS ppv % which would have put him somewhere around 5-8 mil for him to fight sean sherk (the champ at 155 lbs at the time) he turn it down flat. cant blame him though, he got 20 mil to fake it with a freak on WWE

as for the game, philly stunk it up. but they played well. i had philly winning game 1, but losing the next four, so they outperformed my prediction. a solid season. but they are a team with a bunch of role players, they need a bonafide star again.
detroit is aight. but they mess around too much and never take any game seriously. orlando will be a problem for them; but only if orlando can hit their 3s on the road. pistons in 6…maybe even 7
is dwyane wade really suckiing on star jones?…nigga..yous in miami surrounded by hott bitches everyday and star jones is the best you could come up with? sheeeeeeeiit. that bitch aint no real cougar. and that rumor better not be true. wade can have any hooch cooch on ocean drive and he settling for star jones? i just dont understand.

Everything was Steiner too. Instead of a clothesline it was the “Steinerline” a suplex was a “Steiner suplex”. They were nice. NWA used to me my shizzznit!
I would have to say Sheed is one of the more entertaining cats in the L. Nothing compares to the “show” Rodman used to give though.
ranger Mayweather is smarter than people give credit. He knew his *** would have been handed to him in MMA.
Hopefully Brock will do better second time around.
What is your record?

Rodman show was more comical because dude was a wierdo.
Sheed is more natural with his antics. He seems like the dude you can chill with and will have you laughing for hours.
I remember the Steiner bros. with the Michigan jackets back in the day. I liked them dudes back then because of the whole fab 5 swagger.

gee
yeah mayweather is smarter then he acts anyway. i cant stand the guy myself (and de la hoya won that last fight!)
i think they decided they are gonna slow brock down some the next fight he has is a joke again. mir was supposed to be brocks “coming out party” because nobody thought mir could win. (mir is no joke either though)
i dont actually fit pro, i have been considering it but never really got into it. i have a ton of work to do before i would actually get in the cage though. in bjj tourneys i have a 9-3 record state wide (never made it out of texas to compete though)
i like coaching and training better to be honest, it is cool teaching the kids. my son is 5 and is about to get started and now every time he gives me a hug when i drop him at school or pick him up he hugs real tight on my neck and will not let go until i “tap” lmao its pretty cool

ranger De la Hoya got that *** whipped come on now. How in the world can you see that as a win for him lol. He knows he even lost. Notice how he wasn’t pushing hard for no rematch.
I like Floyd. I do wish he would quit boxing though. I like it when dudes go out on top. Man go out undefeated, leave with people wondering if you would have ever been beating.
Sadly some can’t leave and end up getting that loss. Hope he doesn’t. The boy is gifted.
Yea it ended up being Mir’s coming out party on Brock. Talk about a big win for him.
ranger that is tight you teaching the kids that. I saw some news report on it taking over things like Tae Kwon Do because you learn many things in MMA.
I am putting my wife in holds all the time lol. Last one was the arm bar. I am putting her sister in the figure four and boston crab all the time lol.
I love mma and wrestling entertainment. I always wanted to be one of the managers in wrestling. They be cracking me up.
Anyway to ball. Yea DaPro I agree Sheed is more natural. I like when players wear their emotions on their sleeve. It’s good to see KG beat himself up, Kobe get that look like “Ok that’s yo a**!” and Tyson scream after a nasty oop. That is why as much as I love Duncan, he will make some of the smoothes shots and dunks or whatever and just have that “Oh well” face.
Only person I want to stop showing their emotions is Dirk. It’s just nasty and creepy when he does that type of stuff.

I find it tough to take the MVP award seriously. It’s just to arbitrary to be able to put any real value on it. It’s like winning the “most popular” award in high school…..nice, but it doesn’t mean anything unless the player has a bonus clause I guess.
Gee….tonight’s going to be DWill’s night, I can feel it. And you watch, the Jazz will have AK run the point once the Jazz get into their half-court in the second half on 4 or 5 possesions. They killed Houston with it in game 1 when they ran that set (scored 4 or 5 times they ran it) and Sloan has sat on it ever since. AK is tough off the dribble and always gets someone a layup out of it.
Sloan used to sit on plays/sets that would work in game 1 of a series until he really needed it, hopefully it works for the Jazz tonight.

lmao my wife is pissed because not only do i roll with her, but now my son wants to armbar/choke what ever on her too.
TKD and things like that are really good if you want to learn the style, and for fitness but if you are ever attacked you are gonna get it handed to you!

i’m just praying Houston shows up tonight. I’m honestly nervous for them and might actually miss the game because of that. When they were blowing the jazz out on tuesday i kept thinking “they’re setting us up for that big disappointment”. It happened last year vs Utah and the year they went 7 games against Dallas.
I dont see Cle losing that series. I dont even think I want them to. As much as I do think Lebron is overrated. lol.
Atlanta? Thanks for making the series worth watching. I so was looking for a sweep here. If anything it shows that the celtics are beatable.

isotope….I don’t think you have to worry about Houston showing up tonight, Adelman has been outstanding at getting those guys ready.
Jazz haven’t played a solid game yet in the series where they get hot and make some shots, but after watching every game of this series and last years series I have absolutely no feel for how this game will go. I know we’ll be loud tonight in SL but who knows what will happen. TMac could go for 50 like he has in the past and when that happens there is nothing you can do to stop him.

Floyd Mayweather would have his a$$ handed to him in the UFC. He was making me so angry when I watched Iron Ring and he was going on and on about how MMA is based on luck, and boxers are blah blah blah…he knows better than to dare step in the octagon. (No disrespect to boxing/boxers in general)
I agree with Rangerjohn…Casual fan are always getting upset when a fight goes to the mat. I think they should all just buy the greatest knockouts on dvd, and kick rocks! Note: I do hate it when fighters aren’t active on the ground though…they just lay there resting

Floyd Mayweather is the cockiest guy on the planet, I would love to see him get starched by somebody.
I quit watching boxing years ago though, the emergence of MMA really killed the sport of boxing which was the greatest one-man sport around forever until then (yes better than golf which is more of a game than a sport. Is shooting pool a sport? Same principle - ball goes in a hole, that’s a game yo).
TOP 5 (favorite) MMA FIGHTERS OF ALL TIME
1. Royce Gracie (top pound-for-pound)
2. Rickson Gracie (most dominant and skilled)
3. Bas Rutten (terrible shorts, great kicks)
4. Fedor Emelianenko (top heavyweight, hardest punches)
5. Wanderlei Silva (looks like a cougar and a bulldog had a baby)
Honorable mention: Chuck Liddell (The Iceman), Sakuraba (Gracie killer), Randy Couture (The Natural), Antonio Nogueira (ground game galore)

man SAS i like some of your “rock” info but your “top 5″ is in no way close to a real list.
royce would get KILLED (in his prime or today) by rickson, fedor, anderson silva, randy, gomi, josh barnett, and any number of guys in the last 10 yrs.
i am not a huge gracie fan personally (props to rickson for being a fighting god) fedor followed by anderson are the 2 top hands down.
a lot of the guys royce has fought where cans, those guys where jokes. the early ufc’s where just a propaganda tape for the gracies (like “gracies in action” look it up).
1) fedor (hands down the best fighter on the planet)
2) anderdon silva (pound for pound maybe the best but a close second none the less)
3) rickson (his 400 and 0 record speaks for itself)
4) wand silva (in his prime there was NOBODY who could stop him, ground game and knees and hands that where bricks and would kill)
5) kimura (look him up, if you have an “all time” fight list this guy is one of the greatest, he was the 1st “gracie killer” the man was so bad they named a submission after him BEFORE it was cliche to name things after people)
May 2nd, 2008 at 7:50 pm

sorry, SAS i didnt read the “favorite” in your post. i can respect that list as some favorites. i really dont like royce after his roid test and then the “i am not going to pay to fight the decision then i would just be spending $10,000 and i would still be suspended, come on man you made $300,000 on that fight, and your entire family legacy has been based on “the smaller guy beating hte larger guy with out the used of any help (ie roids). i lost all respect for him after that.
