Photo. MannionOne reason everyone has been so geeked since July that the Celtics are a championship contender again is the inevitable feeling of nostalgia. Well, Celtics/Cavs last night was definitely nostalgic; it looked a lot like those awful bump-and-grind Knicks/Heat games from the 1990’s. Paul Pierce only had 4 points on 2-of-14 shooting, Ray Allen took a Krispy Kreme for the evening while going 0-for-4, and LeBron played what was essentially the worst game we’ve ever seen him play, going 2-for-18 from the floor (12 pts) with 10 turnovers. However, the fact that ‘Bron could struggle so much and the Cavs still only lost by four points on the road has to bode well for Cleveland. They were in great position to tie the game with eight seconds left, but LeBron had a finger roll go in-and-out on him … While the main storyline will be how bad LeBron, Ray and Pierce played, don’t overlook the performance of Kevin Garnett (28 pts, 8 rebs), who stepped up and delivered not just in the clutch, but throughout the entire game when his superstar teammates couldn’t get anything going. KG made two huge shots late in the fourth quarter: an 18-footer that tied it up with about 1:20 left, and then the go-ahead bucket with 21 seconds left when he took Joe Smith into the chamber down low. And while we’re talking nostalgia, don’t forget that Joe was the #1 pick in the Draft the same year Garnett was #5. If the Warriors only knew … You also have to give credit to Zydrunas Ilgauskas (22 pts, 12 rebs) for coming through when LeBron couldn’t. Garnett’s aforementioned clutch shots were both follow-ups to big-time buckets from Z; his as-per-usual mid-range J and a tip-in of a LeBron miss … We know it’s the playoffs and all, but the arguing and whining is getting ridiculous. There was a time when the Celtics had to inbound under their own basket with one second left on the shot clock, and their only option was to pass it to Garnett, who was in no position to get up a shot. After the C’s turned the ball over both KG and Doc Rivers were complaining to the refs. About what? … So much for those worries about Sam Cassell having to accept a backup role to Rajon Rondo. Cassell has been the ideal sixth man since coming to Boston, and in the postseason has consistently come in and immediately put up points. Yesterday he had 13 points, including a pair of much-needed threes early in the fourth quarter and some ice-water free throws late. Sam also committed a flagrant foul on LeBron, and tried to fight Ilgauskas after Z accidentally kneed him in the head … Thanks to TiVo we watched the replay of the flagrant, and it’s pretty clear that Cassell didn’t touch LeBron’s head/face at all. LeBron went down holding his face and completely sold it to the refs, who bought into it. Between his move yesterday and some of Chris Paul’s antics on Monday night, even the young guys are getting a hang of how to work the refs in the postseason … Daniel Gibson is becoming a shorter version of Robert Horry with the way he only shows up for special occasions. Taking away last year’s playoffs, this year’s Rookie Challenge, and this year’s playoffs, can you recall a single thing he’s done as a pro? … Remember when Sasha Pavlovic was a relevant player? It seems he disappears for weeks on end, and it’s tough to even remember what leg he had to stand on back when he held out for more money last summer. We swear one time Mike Fratello called him “Popovich” yesterday … It’s funny how teams don’t even guard Ben Wallace most of the time, so he’ll get the ball in the post and be ready to back someone down, only there’s no one there and he ends up making some awkward move before kicking it back to the perimeter. Since you know he’s never gonna turn around and take the jumper, it’s like he guards himself … Kobe officially got his MVP trophy yesterday, and will be presented with it again in front of the Lakers crowd before tonight’s Game 2 against Utah. Staples is going to be louder than you’ve ever heard it, and the ovation/”M-V-P!” chant will last a good 15 minutes if no one steps in and stops it. Does any NBA player — even LeBron — own his city the way Kobe owns L.A.? … In a vote that wasn’t really as close as we thought it would be, Kobe got 82 first-place votes next to just 28 for Chris Paul. Garnett had 15 first-place votes and LeBron got one. Dwight Howard finished a very distant 5th place, followed by Amare, Duncan, T-Mac, Nash, Ginobili, Dirk, Deron, ‘Melo, Pierce, ‘Sheed, Boozer and Antawn Jamison … FYI, the MVP ballots include 1st-through-5th place votes, so don’t think anyone voted for Jamison or one of those back-end guys to get 2nd or 3rd place. All of the first, second and third votes went to Kobe, CP, KG or LeBron … In a story about Kobe’s MVP win, the L.A. Times mentioned Kobe’s self-written cover story in Dime #22. So with that, we re-posted an excerpt from Kobe’s story that even two years later still gives an in-depth look into why he played so well this season … Did you catch Like Mike 2: Streetball on BET last night? There were tons of cheesy-funny moments right off the bat, like when one kid hits a shot and says, “Money in the bank, baby. That’s why they call it (pause to brush his shoulders off) the BANK shot!” Or when the older bully delivered this line: “You win, you’re in. You lose, you cruise.” We were ready to sit through the whole thing until Kel Mitchell got involved and became insufferable … We’re out like LeBron’s shot …

If Cleveland and Boston are gonna continue to play at this level, Detroit doesn’t have much to worry about. Seriously, that game sucked. With all those offensive weapons, I can’t believe Boston gets so stagnant on offense for minutes at a time. And it happens so often, this is the 4th game (3 losses in ATL + last night) that they went on a 2nd half scoring drought of 5+ minutes. Anything less than the Finals and Boston needs a new coach.
And take it from an LA lifer, there are very few people with anything bad to say about Kobe in Los Angeles. Let’s just say if he were doing 60 in a 45 zone with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit around the time the playoffs started, you guys probably wouldn’t hear about it.

You can blame Mike Brown for most of Lebron’s turnovers. All game the Celtics keyed on King, leaving KG in float against any drives (which is where Z got all his buckets) and having six hands going at every dribble Bron made, yet coach never took the ball out of his hands. What Bron needs is to catch entry passes, not deliver them and then miraculously grab offensive rebounds for buckets. Life is pretty fucking simple when you take at an elementary level, and in all forms of basketball it is elemental to feed your best player! The Cavs played great D, but, man, running some pick and rolls, a hi-lo here and there, maybe even (gasp) a back-door cut for Lebron, let alone having him post up within 9-12 feet from the rim, I could coach a better offensive set than Mike Brown. This “give the ball to Will” bs needs to stop and someone needs to give Mike Brown a dry erase marker and a fn clue on how to coach.

And I know it’s 08 this summer but I still wanna see Sebastian Telfair play with LeBron James for at least one season.

cavs have nobody to guard kg, allen is washed up i think, peirce had a bad night for foul trouble and labron playing him.

YOUNGFED, I haven’t had as much time, but I’ve been posting, just usually later on in the day. Things have been really busy at work. You must not’ve been looking later in the afternoon…
Kobe better than MJ? Maybe on individual talent (MJ didn’t have the 3ball until the 2nd 3peat) but as an overall player? Hell no! Let Kobe win another few rings (very possible/likely) then you can open up that discussion, but he hasn’t even won a chip as the best player on a team yet, so let’s shelve that discussion for a few years.
The Cavs should be encouraged that LeBron crapped the bed and they still only lost by a few, but Pierce AND Ray Allen did even less, so let’s call that a wash. Honestly, the Celtics should be happy that they were able to win a game like that. This one should’ve gone to Cleveland with the way we played (and the refs are AWFUL. Really, if anyone even looks at LeBron it’s a foul? Right as we were starting to lose our minds, they called 2 straight very-close-to-a-blocking charges on Bron that really did nothing but confuse the crowd even more as to why he got so many borderline calls in the first half. Better late than never I guess…)
Let’s see if Big Z is suspended for game 2, cuz that was just as bad as what Songalia did to LeBron in the first round. My bet is that he isn’t, but if the same thing was done to LeBron, see ya. (I personally don’t care one way or another, just making the point that the first one was BS and NEITHER one deserves a suspension.)
Cassell is earning his $$$ (though he’s always looking for his shot, and that’s kind of concerning sometimes, but it’s better than Eddie House doing the same thing…) Last night was why we picked him up. Big shots in a close, late game. Just like he’s been doing the last 15 years… and really? A small, 38 year old guy getting up ready to fight Big Z? BALLSY. FrankenZ would’ve smashed him back to Mars, or wherever he’s from.
Sans, “The give the ball to Will BS needs to stop.” GREAT LINE MAN!
Doc and the coaches were so confused after the 1 second play because (according to them in the post-game press conference) it looked like the second KG caught the ball, the clock expired (not a full second.) Personally, I think they just missed it, cuz the inbounds came right after a timeout, which came right after a miss that they probably thought caught some rim (it went long and caught backboard.)

First off when I had to depaaart yesterday I noticed there was talk on the whole Hakeem vs. David deal as far as the MVP went.
I feel Hakeem deserved it the year David got it. We could crunch numbers and go on and on. Either way Hakeem showed who was the real MVP that whole series, San An prolly would have been better off had Hakeem got the award. Maybe Dream would have taken it eassssier.
Just for numbers that series though: David Robinson in series: 23.8 points 11.3 rebounds 2.7 assists 1.5 steals
Hakeem Olajuwon in series: 35.3 points 12.5 rebounds 5.0 assists 4.1 blocks 1.3 steals
Game 1: Olajuwon: 27 pts - Robinson 21 pts
Game 2: Olajuwon: 41 pts - Robinson 32 pts
Game 3: Olajuwon: 43 pts - Robinson 29 pts
Game 4: Olajuwon: 20 pts - Robinson 20 pts
Game 5: Olajuwon: 42 pts - Robinson 22 pts
Game 6: Olajuwon: 39 pts - Robinson 19 pts
Done.
Young we had the Ironman convo yesterday.
Glad to see a team not letting LeBron just drive to the whole uncontested and at will. Looks like he is really going to have to alter his game or come up with something else. Cause we all know the rest of the team is not going to always keep him close like that.
Proud of KG making it happen late. I was impressed (and have always been) with big Z. I don’t think he gets enough credit for how hard he works.
Glad to see Sam making his mark too. To funny when he kept trying to get off the ground to go holla at Z. It was like he couldn’t get up fast enough for ish.
Did Paul play last night? Dude has some open looks too, but wasn’t putting enough on some shots. Hard times.
I have to agree all the complaining and stuff is getting out of hand. Those multi-million dollar cats need to just shut-up and play. I have seen less arguing and debating on street courts and they don’t even have a ref or make nuuuthin!
LeBron is climbing that flopping ladder. He is really putting to much into when he gets bumped. Hope he doesn’t become a playoff flopper.
Dirk, Steve and David could you all report to the office and bring your MVP trophies with you. There has been a do-over (as kids would say) and come to find out you didn’t deserve them. Thanks.

My boy Bron had a real off night, you know you having a off night when you can’t even hit a layup. These are two defensive minded teams though and it should be interesting, because this series isn’t as one-sided as some people want to believe.
@Dave
Wasup Dave, that Utah v. Lakers game is going down tonight, and you know we gotta comment on that game tommorrow.
The Cavs-Boston game was good though, Clevelands offense wasn’t as stagnant as usual, they were setting picks for each other at the top and at the block, and I saw pretty good off the ball movement, they were switching really well also, and getting a lot of offensive rebounds. I’m not mad at bron having an off night, but 10 turnovers is unacceptable. Every time my man touched the ball he had 3 people on him so that leaves how many people open? I can live with ray and perice’s bad games, but goodness 10 turnovers for any player is just Awful.
@YoungFed
Yes the Pistons are gonna beat the breaks off of Orlando tonight at home. Magic go down 3-0. The magic are young, Dwight is too limited on offensive, and Rashard Lewis is playing as soft as a sillouhuette.Hedo isn’t being the clutch player he was all season either. Maybe Prince and Wallace have something to do with that, and Maxiell is doing and excellent job on Howard.
@sans
Bron was getting picks though, I really believe he was trying to do too much, I agree with you as far Mike Brown needing to feed Bron the ball in the post, and getting him open on high screen and rolls, that should have been the whole point of acquiring Delonte West, to take the ball out of Brons hands and get him a reliable point gaurd.

Perk was also HUGE last night. He had a lot of HUGE boards and blocks and hit a few shots to start the half when the entire team was ice cold.
Posey is our best on-ball defender BY FAR and did a great job w/ LeBron last night. He has to be the first guy off the bench and covering LeBron whenever possible (Doc resting Pierce to let Posey cover him some or move Pierce over to Pavlovic and have Posey come in for Ray) This series is precisely what we signed him for.

sounds about right Sirak and that’s the main reason Kobe will never have a leg to stand on in the MJ argument (you know, in addition to the rings, numbers, accomplishments, trade demand, and helping run another star - Shaq deserves plenty of blame too - out of town because they couldn’t play nice after winning 3 rings together.)
May 7th, 2008 at 9:14 am
Celts Fan says:
Chuck - Delonte’s more a good combo guard. He can play the point and defend the position really well, but he’s not a great distributor. He’s very similar to Daniel Gibson and was probably more an insurance policy in case he leaves than the PG they think can take them to the promised land (though he’s in a GREAT situation for his skill set, he’s probably best suited as a change of pace guy off the bench with a more traditional PG starting, or starting but playing more of a spot-up role as LeBron runs the offense like they have been. That’s what he’s best at.)
May 7th, 2008 at 9:16 am
Three Stacks says:
I’m not opposed to defense, but good players usually find a way to overcome defense throughout the course of a game. For so many good players to crap the bed in the same game, I didn’t find it very stimulating is all.
Besides, a game like yesterday’s was more the product of bad decision making in the half-court and cold shooting, not outstanding defense. Good defense/TOs usually leads to fast break opportunities (and higher scores), which there were almost none of on both sides yesterday.
As far as Boston’s offense goes, ATL isn’t exactly known for their defensive prowess. To go scoreless for minutes like that consistently is gonna kill them sooner or later. Like I said, anything less than the Finals and they need a new coach.
May 7th, 2008 at 9:22 am

You make it sound like MJ was the ideal teammate, but he was probably harder on his squad than Kobe is. It’s not wrong to demand excellence from your teammates, as long as you hold the same standards for yourself. I think it’s obvious both MJ and Kobe do just that.

“Coach” Brown has GOT to figure something out… how about getting LeBron the ball in the post and then letting him get some work in. When the double team comes the passing lanes will be much more accessible than they are off of the WEAK pick and roll… ROUGH.

Chuck I know Kevin ain’t mad and you right, just thinking on that whole situation when Hakeem beat David the year he got the award.
If anything like that was to happen this year it would more likely be Chris Paul having a showcase against the Lakers provided they meet.
I would think Kobe would take it upon himself to lock Chris down before he allows that to happen (in N.O. getting wins from it).
Yea that movie was wack. I like the Iron Fist, it’s ghetto MMA lol but yea some dudes look serious. Black Poker Stars cracks me up though, that lil Kevin Hart is a funny dude. To bad his movies suck. Soul Plane anyone?? lol.

I think the Cavs should be encouraged that they hung with the Cs in Boston w/o the King being King.
However, they lost a HUGE opp last night to steal one and rip the Cs hearts out.
I see this going 7.

Good defensive battle yesterday and terribly offensive coached game/ I’ll leave the coaches alone today but just know KG working the high post and spotting the cutters is a good look for Boston and King James curling off a few picks and flashing to the right wing is worth taking a look at.
Other than that, Cleveland gets no moral victories least night. It will be a better game offensively for King James but also for Ray and Paul.

Three Stacks says:
First off, I never said Kobe was better than MJ. But attitude and behavior have nothing to do with results on the court, so what does it matter what kind of people they are?
As far as Kobe’s rape thing, he just cheated on his wife. Rich men cheat on their wives, and the wives condone it cause otherwise they’d lose the diamonds and the mansion. It’s the way the world works, if you were a rich athlete, you’d cheat, too. Imagine having pussy thrown your way like you were Rick James in the 70’s, like you could resist? So don’t judge them.

@Three Stacks
That’s a generalization that isn’t necessarily true.
AC Green was a viirgin until like 40, because he was placing his trust in Christ, which I can totally respect and he had a pretty good career.
So we can’t say ALL rich men, MOST, yeah we can say that, but not ALL.
And kobe cheating on his wife wasn’t what people were mad about. It was how he would always call out his teammates for going out, tellling the media Shaq was cheating his wife, and just really being GAY, (I am a kobe fan to the heart but I gotta tell the truth) and then being a hypocrite and cheating on his wife.

I don’t recall Kobe guarding CP3 during any of the four regular season games, so I doubt Phil would employ that strategy now. Paul’s gonna get his anyway, I don’t think making Kobe expend that much energy on D is the right way to go. Especially since the Hornets have NO ONE that can come even remotely close to guarding Kobe Bryant.
Chris Paul is a point guard, there’s no way you can stop a dude from PASSING and finding open teammates. Even if Kobe were on him, the Lakers might stop his penetration a little better, but CP and West would just pick and roll them to death. It’s in the Laker’s favor to make this an offensive battle.
The Key Matchup for that series, though, would be Odom vs West.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Utah and SA ain’t no joke.

Three Stacks, you must not live in the US with a quote like, “As far as Kobe’s rape thing, he just cheated on his wife. Rich men cheat on their wives, and the wives condone it cause otherwise they’d lose the diamonds and the mansion.”
Here, when the wives decide they’re sick of their husbands (for good reason or not) it’s the men that typically lose the mansions, diamonds, etc. even though that girl never hit a jumper and made it all by laying on her back. Ask Michael Strahan or MJ (or Shaq soon enough) how that one goes.
May 7th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Chuck...A source of knowldge for all says:
The pick and roll is not undefendable. Derek fisher is a strong enough gaurd that he will be able to fight through some of those picks, lamar Odom, which is who would most likely be gaurding west is quick and lengthy enough, that he could slow dow Pauls penetration and his wing span long enough to effectively bother his shot should Paul decide to pull up.
The problems teams are having is not will Paul passing, but will Paul Penetrating. That penetration makes men lag off of their players to help leaving a back turned OR ungaurded player, usually Tyson Chandler who is alreay over you head like a bird ready to sh*t on you.
If the lakers can switch effectively and stay aware of where the other players on the floor are at all times they will be okay.
You stop Pauls penetration, and West no longer is open all day for that 15 footer he loves to take, and Tyson no longer is Barreling down the lane like a bowling ball.
Keep Paul on the perimeter with Fisher, Lamar and Kobe, a great combination of length speed and veteran savvy between the three, and they will be okay.
Key matchups should that series occur
Pau v Chandler (Chandler may run Pau out the gym!)
Radmanovic v Peja (I don’t think Radmanovic can stop Peja)

Why I gotta be working the clock? lol
Yall saying it like the Pistons needed help or something.
May 7th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Three Stacks says:
@ Celts Fan: you’re right. but doesn’t stop rich men from cheating.
@ Chuck: West’s jumpers and Chandler’s alley-oops come off of Paul’s penetration AFTER the screen-roll. When Paul attacks by himself, he usually takes it to the rack for a layup or foul, or kicks it out to Peja or one of their open jump shooters. But Utah’s screen-roll is almost as deadly as NO’s, and Lakers did a pretty good job defending that in game 1. When all’s said and done, both teams are pretty unstoppable if the role players are hitting their 3s. That’s probably what it’ll come down to.
And Vlad can’t guard Peja, but he’s tall enough to bother him a little. Besides, Peja can’t guard anyone either.

LOL. Kobe may be a bitch, probably is, I don’t know. But I don’t really care about any of that. I just know he’s an amazing ball player on the hometown team of my favorite sport.
If the Lakers sucked this yr, or were doomed to mediocrity like the last few years, maybe I’d be more critical. But his words made Bynum come to camp in shape and improve his game, and his demands made us dump the worst player of my generation to don a Laker’s uniform in exchange for Pau freakin Gasol. So can’t say I mind the fact that he’s a bitch, no. LOL

{”Tonight was an offensive struggle game. Defensively, both teams were locked in,” James said. “Not a lot of All-Star numbers out there.”
Not from James, certainly, and not from Allen and Pierce. But there was another All-Star out there, one who has been criticized throughout his career for shying away from taking the big shot down the stretch of close games. That would be none other than Kevin Garnett, whose aggression could not be doubted this time.”} Daily “Dime” (espn)
Me:
This isn’t the first time KG lead the way to victory, but I’ll just let this ride and let him speak for himself with his play. It was said earlier, but Boston is not seeing how big a mismatch KG has most games. Even in the ATL series. He was given their bigs double moves and making it look easy. Same thing this game. He looked tired at the end, but calmly knocked down an 18 footer and then took Joe Smith “Back down memory lane” in taking him straight to the rack.
Only two maybe three guys in the league that can give KG problems and they do not play for the Cavs. Doc needs to feed him lower in the post…To Doc’s credit he spoke on wanting KG to be more aggressive.

Food for thought? A lot of people credit D toni’s system for so much in regards to Nash, Stat, Matrix and others.
So now that a new coach will be coming in what will likely happen to Nash and Stat?
I am thinking Shaq, Boris and Stat will continue to prosper. I am thinking unless it’s some pick and roll type stuff Nash’s numbers might decrease some.

NBA - You will earn so much more if you don’t shoot any guns.
MLB - More money for any illegal substances
NFL - Don’t beat up any women, have any bad boat parties, ride motorcycles and don’t have animals fight each other and we will give you more money.

As far as Nash, it’s not like he’s ever played big minutes for a coach that was defensive oriented. First Nelson, then D’antoni…so it really remains to be seen what happens. He’s already dropped to the 3rd/4th PG taken in drafts…the new coach is gonna have a big impact on whether he’s taken in the 2nd round or 3rd.

D’Antoni is rumored to come to Chi-town. I’m not sure what to think just yet. It was reported that he didn’t hold the young stars accountable on the court or develop their games enough. If this is the case then Chicago is the wrong place for him. The players aren’t mature enough to handle “lack of discipline” but too sensitive to handle harsh criticism
