Sheed is right. I really do feel like the league is grooming a Lakers-Celtics finals. There have been a lot of BAD calls. I’m a Kobe fan and would love to see the Lakers in the finals, but the right way.I like the Celtics also, but I just want to see them get there the right way, not by the refs whistling them there.

Not true about Dirk. He rarely takes more threes than twos in a game. If you look at his game log, it seems most of the time he takes between 1 and 3 triples per game.

i dont agree, the spurs are boring because they are in SA, i dont care who you put in LA or how they play, they will never be boring because they have jack, denzel, dicrapio, andy garcia and a list of others that goes on and on. it is nothing to do with the team, the players it is all about a “popularity” contest and la is the home of the “popular people”
notice even the hornets have a couple stars they show and they are “not boring” yet they admitedly patern their game after the spurs.
spurs got eva, and tommy lee jones (even if they never show him) and thats about it. its all about “fasion and popularity”

And anyone, black, white, purple who does use that within their vocabulary really needs to pick up a history book and realize what that word was intended for. How that is considered a “WEAK” punk side comment eludes me.

see your comments towards fallinup are exactly the problem, sure its ok to say the word if you want to get your ass kicked (or they might try to kick your ass) but then it is not ok in the media or in the eyes of the press for a white person to say this stuff. then again if imus had said those girls look like a bunch of redneck crackers he never would have gotten fired would he? this is the problem, none of these things are ok for anyone to say but for some reason the n word is alright if you are black and not alright if you are not black but the other words are ok no mater what color you are.

In a way that is what is FKN wrong with politics … If Obama, Clinton, and McCain expressed themselves freely then we could be breaking down every one of their flaws (isn’t politics all about finding a flaw on the other party, it’s not about who knows what). But instead we all like fake people on TV because they are so perfect and that is what everyone who critizizes someone else is…perfect…whatever perfect really is. I’m sure if Sheed could do it over again he wouldn’t have dropped the N word on TV, but when you are playing a highly contested game at the highest level in the world, emotions and intensity do not just go away because the buzzer goes off. He reacted to a question and that’s why I listen to Sheed and not try a criticize him … his answers are not scripted, they are who he is.

T Dubbs says:
Here’s the bottom line on some of these issues:
The Gasol trade wasn’t rigged by any means. The Lakers got their seasoned big man, and Memphis got talented youth (except for Kwame), along with some low expendable contracts. Naturally, all of dolts are going to scream it’s a “rigged trade”, when they don’t realize that Memphis will have some good cap room available to add some pieces within the next couple of years.
The referees will never please everyone. Either way, you’ll always have an uproar about 1 or 2 calls during a game, which may or may not affect the outcome. When players don’t know how to play real hard-nosed defense and they resort to flopping, don’t blame the referees for putting their whistles in their back pocket. I wouldn’t call that crap either… man up and play some real basketball. But hey, that’s the way basketball has evolved.
As far as the conspiracy theory, the league has a big hidden agenda to promote a Lakers/Celtics series, I disagree. Would it be ideal for the league? Hell yeah it would. But throughout the playoffs, I haven’t seen any games being oficiated lop-sided. Even in Game 5 last night, the Pistons shot more free throws than the Celtics. How about Kobe only average 1.5 free throws per game in the SA series? It doesn’t appear that the referees are “rigging” anything.

The first time I remember hearing it on regular TV (not HBO) when it wasn’t part of a “very special episode” of Family Matters or Sister Sister or something was on Chappelle’s Show. I’m not saying Dave Chappelle started it, but the N-word usage on TV definitely increased with his show and later with The Boondocks. Again, that doesn’t give anyone an excuse to use it, but there’s been a societal change in what is and isn’t acceptable.

Also, who cares what Rasheed dropped in his post game interviews? He was frustrated, and vented to a bunch of pushy idiots that had microphones jammed in his face. I respect people more when they say how they really feel, instead of giving the same old cliche answer. Of course, it doesn’t send a great message to the younger basketball fans, but that’s just the competitive nature of sports. That won’t ever change.
May 29th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Austin Burton says:
Here’s the thing, though: I don’t hear Sheed complaining about “this isn’t basketball” when the clock operator gives the Pistons 4 extra seconds to hit a buzzer beater. (Remember the Orlando series?) I don’t hear him complaining when Rip flops and gets away with it. Blaming the refs and conspiracy theories is Little League behavior. I remember when I played LL whenever we’d lose, you had half the team crying and saying the refs were “cheating” and throwing in a “the refs were racist” every now and then. Own up to the fact that your team just got beat.

about the Gasol trade:
Cap room only matters if free agents want to play there. Nobody good will go to Memphis for money unless all they care about is getting paid to lose, and that’s not somebody you’d want to be using up all your contract money.
May 29th, 2008 at 11:50 am
T Dubbs says:
Most players in the league do admit they got beat, but that’s just Rasheed’s mentality. It almost seems like he needs that spark of motivation for the next game, so he needs to make his comments to stir the pot.
I’m not a Detroit fan by any means, but it makes me sick to watch Rasheed play basketball. So much talent, and such a lack of effort in the game. If he actually channeled his attitude and intensity in a positive manner, and used it in his game, the sky is the limit for him.
But I agree, making excuses and using ‘conspiracy theories’ as a crutch is definitely little league behavior. Then again, I guess it gives the media something to write about and discuss on internet forums. There’s nothing like a little drama to fire up the basketball soap opera.

T Dubbs says:
Prof. Tx -
If free agents want to play there? If you haven’t noticed lately, money talks my friend. Human beings tend to change their minds fairly quickly when a little green is thrown at them in large quantities. =)
But I understand what you’re saying - Memphis won’t be competing for a title in the next decade, so why would a superstar want to play there? Hence the reason Gasol wanted out the door.
So, in all reality, (short term) the Lakers definitely got the better end of the deal. However, if Memphis can get Warrick to add about 40 lbs, they pick up another F/C position to use as a scoring option, and Gay continues to grow as a player… they may be dangerous in a few years.

The problem is people being cowards. Don’t come at me about the historical ramifications, because majority of the people we blast for using it don’t care about that. So Sheed is the same as Kramer (michael richards)?
NWA is the same as the KKK?
Please! It is a WEAK position to take to just say “no one should use it”. How about fostering a greater sense of community and getting a feel for an individual. I know Sheed is North Philly through and through (”real” people). He doesn’t censor himself and his dialect is very hood (a stint at UNC didn’t wash that away). I’m supposed to squirm and chastise him for saying N…. around white folks? No. We grant power to the word that just isn’t there. You can call me a few things that I’ll take offense to, but saying a word alone shouldn’t insult anyone. We make it deeper than it is.
Like Jim said above. I was way more offended by his rude demeanor and saying “watch out” rather than “excuse me”.
Bottom line I wasn’t raised to give anyone or anything power to control my emotion or mind. But I’ll let you all continue to talk about the N word. It’s lives at stake out here, children are hungry for guidance and support. That’s what I’m on. Not banning a word created in ignorance from being used in ignorance.
What does the core of the word mean? If it has a meaning then it exist. Can’t erase history people and can’t erase the pain of a past that none of us can truly contextualize by sitting on a high horse and chastising people who use N… as a colloquialism rather than pejorative…
Be offended by offense remarks not by a single word that you are instructed should offend you. I’m not a N… My friends don’t use it to refer to one another. On the flip I have cats that I associate with that use it as a colloquialism and it doesn’t penetrate my sense of self at all because I understand my environment.
My question is always why would anyone DESIRE to use the word? People are sitting on the outside of understanding trying to find a way in through a word born out of ignorance and used out of ignorance. Not good or bad…It is just a matter of enlightenment.
But that’s my limit with exchanging about this type of stuff. Be easy.

What the hell was Rondo doing all night with those lob passes at half court. Celts look shook when Lindsay comes in and when Maxiell (sp) is being agressive…

now that being said, the word cracker is basically the same word only refering to white people, and yet if young walked up to a group of white people and said whats up crackers, they would most likely laugh at him.
what i find pisses me off on this subject, chris rock had a rutine where he talked about his grandfather who said things like “cracker ass crackers” and then he dropps n word after n word and people find it funny, all people not just black people find it funny (not me actually i have never been a chris rock fan)

WHY would YOU DESIRE to call any Black person a N…?
Answer that for me.
If a black person walked up to me and my friends with that greeting we would be like “who is this ignorant dude?” At the same time I give people a chance to prove their authenticity as we all should. If that is who they are and I care enough to keep in communication I will definitely make it known that I don’t answer to that. Maybe that sounds like it is too hard to do, but it has been done without problem. It’s about respect and authenticity. You can go around and experiment with a word that you only want to use because it’s taboo if you like…

We’re not operating on a level playing field, and we never have been. Words like “cracker” have never been used to hold a White man down, whereas words like “nigger” have been used to hold countless Black men down. Therefore, a White person calling me a nigger is coming from a different place (at least perception-wise) than if I called a White person a cracker. Sorry if it’s not 100% fair, but not much has been fair when it comes to race in America.

Cracker is not the same!!
to quote KRS:
“You must learn!!”
It may not be an official source, but wiki touches on all the differing perspectives of the words origins:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cracker_(pejorative)
My teaching of the word was that it referred to an oppressor with only one trick. You can crack a whip on a Lion to teach him tricks, but if that Lion gets tired of your tricks and that whip, then guess what…that whip can’t stop that Lion from retaliation…
Look up N… and see the images of folks lynched, burned, raped, subjugated, and oppressed. Not comparable words. The only thing that links the word is that they are both used as pejoratives and are often based out of anger/ignorance.
But you make that determination for yourself…

Rasheed ain’t harming anyone with the ‘N’ word, yes he doesn’t like the press but anyone who’s followed him over the years knows he’s a very good guy…About the 9 threes, yes its too many but when you hit 6 of your first 7 its hard to critcize shooting a couple more…That being said he needs to post his ass up more and go to that baseline fade-away. Cats are flopping left and right, and anyone who knows David Stern knows he’s praying for Lakers-Celtics.

I hear you. On that play where Rip got hurt it looked like he flopped his way into the injury. His arm and elbow was all around Ray’s neck. Pistons and Spurs are great teams because the know the intricacies of “gamesmanship” in BBALL. They exercise this knowledge often too. Again Rip Hamilton is one of the worst. He literally grabs and holds people arms then throw himself down… I respect their organizations, but I have no respect for their complaints about calls (on or off the court)…

What about the NBA fining for flopping next year??
I think it will help refs out.
I hate that defenders can’t defend. Offensive players initiate so much contact and get the calls too often. I watch Chauncey and he just pushes Rondo the whole game. Not just to knock him, because so many guess do it (protect the ball with their off arm), but it should be an offensive at a certain point. I like to see good D, but defenders have been put at a major disadvantage since the NBA made the offensive rule changes to let the guards have an easier time on the floor.

Austin Burton says:
Fining for flopping just creates another area where you’re becoming too reliant on judgment calls and leaving too much margin for error.
When Shaq hits the deck after Chauncey Billups runs into him, isn’t that a flop? Or are we only talking about the kind of on-ball stuff that Manu does? What about when Kobe throws his hands in the air and screams to exaggerate a foul; is that flopping?
It’s ultimately going to hurt guys who have a reputation for flopping. Manu will get fined for doing the same thing as Chris Paul, but CP wouldn’t be fined because people don’t think of him as a flopper. (Which he is.)
I still say the best way to curb over-flopping is for the refs to simply not call fouls on those plays. If players aren’t getting the whistle for acting, they’ll stop doing it because it’s pointless.

the 2 terms are maybe not exactly completely equal i the “oppresive” term btnone the less hey hav VERYnegative meanings for their respective party. bottom ine, a black person being called the word is no different the na white person being calledcracker because they both ae negative terms used to put the person down.
and hese dys whna black person says the n word te says ANYTING about it having to do with slavery, i have to ask, “where are our scars?” “who owns you or who owned yor family?”take it up with tat person or thier family.
my family is irish and the irish where persecuted as hard or hardr then MOST other people in this country, and my family never owned slaves so dont take up the “slavey” excuse wih me. it is no longer a vible arguement. not in 2008 (these ar my oppinions, flame away)

Flame away? I’m not even sure what you are saying. If you feel that a cracker is the same good for you. You obviously don’t know enough about what’s going on. Saying your family didn’t own slaves and asking questions like “Where’s your scars?” is still WEAK in that they don’t deal with reality.
I can’t discuss an issue about race and racial epithets with someone that doesn’t have the same operational definitions. The fact that you think Black folks don’t have scars from slavery, because they didn’t suffer in what you think was the only era of slavery in this country says enough to me. Since your family didn’t own slaves I should allow you to call me a N…? Or do you think you have the authority and morale compass to direct me and everyone else how we should live and speak?
Keep it basketball dude. Let’s all just be better contributors in fostering a greater sense of community and continue to educate ourselves. I can’t direct you on what you should do. I try to understand things and not react or operate out of emotion. I know what I know. You know what you feel. My scars may not be visible to YOUR eyes, but they are to those who love and identify with me. That is the reason why their is certain dynamics of the N word that are deemed “for us”. If you can’t understand that then there is nothing more for me to do. You do you. It’s not even just a Black/White thing it can be a White/White or Black/Black thing. IF you don’t love me or identify with me, how can you ever really engage me in any dialog of understanding.
But you still haven’t answered the question why would you want to use the N word. If you are that example of justice and respect that goes much further than making empty arguments based out of emotion and popular opinion.
I hear, but we aren’t speaking the same language. Sorry, but that’s the way it is.
Let’s just keep it basketball…

so far kudabeen, you have asked me the same question 3 time and all 3 tmes i have answered the same way, I DO NOT WANT OR CARE TO REFER TO NY BLAC PERSON BY THE N WORD, and i do not want to be refered to a a cracker.
stop trying to sound like you are better then me or anyone else and begin a reading comprehension course.
so what i have to say is his, when i see someone saying “we are owed this because of slavery” i have to ask who is your owner, where where yu a slave?
my grandfather was a slave. he was a bataan death march suvivor in WW2 and was made to be a slve in the condemed copper mines of jaan or 3 yrs during the war. he was beaten, pissedon, burriedalive and left for 3 days 5 TIMES, he spent day on a “hell ship”. i know wat modern day slaves look like (he is the reason i joined the army)
and @dapro
actually my aunt is a “geneologist” by professn, and i can say in all honesty that my “ancestors” did not own slaves in ireland, and came to the USA after slavery was abolished.

Not saying any type of racial slur is acceptable, but you gotta be kidding if you think the “nigger” and “cracker” carry the same weight. “Cracker” doesn’t have two hundred years of slavery and oppression behind it.
rangerjohn, I’m sorry for what your grandfather went through, but his individual experience during WAR TIMES does not equate to the denigration of an entire continent (not to mention the Caribbean islands) for several centuries.
I think most ppl here would agree, whether condoning the use of those words or not, that racism is still alive in America. No one can say for sure whether using racial slurs is perpetuating it, but there are much bigger issues than use of the N-word on TV. It’s like complaining about spilled milk when there’s a goddamn flood next door.
Both Chappelle and the Boondocks were/are making attempts to bring the subtlety of racism to the forefront of people’s minds. I think Chappelle quit because he felt he was failing. Aaron McGruder though (creator of the Boondocks) is still keeping at it, and god bless him for it. Those shows aren’t just about comedy.

I’m unclear on the history of the word, at least on how it became part of black culture to refer to each other with it. In all honestly and logic, black folks probably just started calling each other “nigger” because that’s what they were labeled, just like we call each other “white” and “black” now.
It’s true, though, that the word should carry the same weight regardless of whose lips they come from. Still, hearing it from a black person doesn’t trigger the same emotional response as hearing it from a white person, and I don’t think that’ll ever change. I think that comes from the notion that “black people can’t be racist to black people,” which is absolutely untrue.

what is interesting about the links and the topic in the links, it was BY FAR the greatest AMRICAN tragedy of ww2 and most people do not even know what it was about. there is a memorial to pearl harbor and yet there where only 2503 deaths there (ironicly about 1/2 of the TOTAL in iraq) and 70,000 captured, 12,000 us and about 11,000 died on the march alone.
there are few americans wo know about the whole story. i was told stories mywhole life by my dad and grandfather. stoies that ould give nightmares to anyone.
