Derek Fisher’s Revolutionary Basketball Workout

For one of the features in the new issue of Dime, we went out to the Lakers practice facility to have Derek Fisher show us some of his daily workout regimen. Why D-Fish? Because what he does works. The guy hasn’t missed a game due to injury in more than three years – a pretty amazing feat in the NBA.

Fisher claims that his health and resurgence over the past few seasons can be attributed to his revolutionary “proprioception” workouts – lifting weights and performing other core strength exercises with his eyes closed in order to elevate his other senses and balance. Kinda crazy, but Fish swears by it. So much so, he does these drills every day including game days.

Fish is the shiz. I don’t see why more payers don’t do other stuff like this. If I were to be a coach of a team, I’d show my players how to work out like this…would also show them a little Tai Chi as well.

I wholeheartedly believe that Allen Iverson wouldn’t have been as good as he was if his moms wouldn’t have made him take up ballet. Funny, but true.

I really enjoy seeing the workouts of guys in the L. One of my fav parts of the mag and I always try to imitate what they do in the gym. Pls keep doin it Dime!

Instead of lifting weights, he should do something about his ball-handling and passing. I mean he’s got the worst handles and court vision amongst all starting points in the L. Period. He is the living proof that shooting is by far the most important element in the game.

  7. Dime Magazine says:

He’s not really a true point guard though, right? He’s more of a 2 trapped in a 6-1 body. Fish isn’t out there run an offense, he’s out there to knock down jumpers … which he does very, very well.

I close my eyes right before I bust … so i see what he is talking about.

  9. Dennis Castro says:

That was pretty cool. I wish I had access to the equipment, trainers, alternate workouts, etc that the NBA players have.

I always end up doing pretty much the same routine with a few variations.

I would have really liked to see a ‘read more’ link here, I think for this last part:

“So much so, he does these drills every day including game days.”

I think that would have really been a nice touch.

This workout is proof that just because an NBA player does something does not mean you should do it. The workout is a waste of time and Derek Fisher is proof. He hasn’t gotten any better (or even tried to) in 10 years.
If you want your game to stop improving, have fun with this workout
