The End of Big Shot Bob?

It’s no secret that Robert Horry‘s play in these playoffs has fallen somewhere between “non-existent” and “awful.” His two points in Game 4 were his only points is the entire Lakers series, where he’s gone a collective 0-9 from the field.

The San Antonio Express is speculating that he might have played his last game in San Antonio. And Spurs blog Pounding the Rock? They’ve taken to calling him “The Corpse of Robert Horry,” which might be too nice.

Today, PTR wrote this after last night’s game:

I mean Robert Horry played 16 minutes. A guy that passed up a wide-open 4 footer played 16 minutes. A guy that has LITERALLY done NOTHING all year to earn a SINGLE minute of playing time plays 16 minutes in the biggest game of the year. Shouldn’t this automatically disqualify the Spurs?

I don’t get why guys like him and finley get playing time.
If it wasn’t for the best player in the league, the spurs wouldn’t have won a game. duncan is just dominating the whole lakers team. but it might not be enough.

  2. rangerjohn says:

to be honest, while horry has done nothing on offense, his defense on odom has been pretty dang good, better then thomas. i would like to see more thomas and less horry though.

i dont know what is going through his head though, why pass those shots?

horry has been done this year no mater what anyway, and his contract is up regardless.

  3. yallallreadyknow says:

big shot bob is going to sign with orlando this off season. that is where he is going to finish his career. when he signs there, it will not be a surprise to anyone. either that, or expect robert horry to re-sign where it all began…Houston Rockets.

spurs have a LOT of needs. 1st and foremost, they need a rebounder. damn tim duncan is hiding that weakness since he pulling down the high teens every gaame. fbut if duncacn doesn’t get the rebound, NO ONE gets the rebound. horry, kurt thomas and fabricio oberto can’t even jump. they have no lift. spurs need to get a bruiser to hit the boards.

spurs also need to get younger and more athletic. perhaps they should explore corey maggette. at least they can have SOMEONE OTHER than tony parker finish a fast break

“If it wasn’t for the best player in the league, the spurs wouldn’t have won a game.”

What’d Kobe do to help the Spurs Timmy? I think you mean the 2nd best player in the league, cuz the best is about to end your season.

  5. Three Stacks says:

Thank you, Celts Fan, for putting Timmy in his place. You and I will be pals until we meet in the Finals.

My theory is simple: Bob Horry is still a Laker at heart. He’s trying to make up for the missed 3-pointer against the Spurs in the 2003 season.

  6. Timmy21 says:

I am talking about Tim being no. 1. most people don’t agree but I just think he is by far better than everybody else in the L.

  7. rangerjohn says:

yallalreadyknow, 1st why would either the magic or rockets sign him, and 2nd what makes anyone thing he would go back on the “this is my last season” statement he made at the begining of the season?

i agree the spurs ned another inside presance but those 3 guys are gone after this year, and hte spurs are getting 2 young bigs both pushing 7 ft and can rebound and move (ian mahinmi and tiago splitter) after those guys are signed, they still have something like 10-12 mil under the tax, and i like the magette, or the spurs could offer josh smith as much as the hawks would be willing to pay him. i liek both of those guys on the spurs really. and all 4 guys named would fit the rebounding, athletics, and youth needed.

  8. rangerjohn says:

timmy, as a spurs fan i LOVE td’s game but i dont agree, he is by far the best big i nthe game i nthe last 10 yrs and maybe even ever but kobe is absolutely the best i nthe game RIGHT NOW. career vs career and TD all the way, right now kobe hands down.

  9. PALakerFan says:

How can Rob no longer shoot??? I realize you lose your lift as you get older but his shot was always more set than jump, so age shouldn’t have affected him this much. I mean that shit’s not even close. I was actually mad when Radmonovic (I think) jumped out to cover him at the 3 point line last night. “No, let him shoot!”

  10. Three Stacks says:

Tim Duncan is an absolute beauty to watch, no doubt about it. He’s probably the best/most accomplished player over the past decade, but since flashy swing players get all the attention, he flies under the radar. I used to like him a lot better when he didn’t complain so much, though. It’s like being around Bowen brought him down a level.

I’ve seen Tiago Splitter play a couple times in Euroleague games, and I don’t really see what the fuss is about. He’s athletic, yes, but he lacks court sense. I dunno, the scouts probably would know better than I do.

    Robert Horry is D-U-N dun.

  11. miamiVIS3 says:

1st off Robert horry should just take his 7 rings and retire
2nd Ive expressed my fellings about Tim Duncan on this site before and seeing your name i can see all u’ll do is keep saying Tim duncan is great but the best player in the whole entire freakin league is just damn ridiculous. If you are the best player in the league your team wouldn’t blow a 20 2nd half lead if you are the best player in the league your team wouldn’t lose by 30 (yes i understand actual best player in the L Kobe los
t by 20 in this series) on the road and lose a crucial game @ home in conference finals.

  12. Celts Fan says:

Timmy, I was with you last year. I said TD was the best player in the league for the past 3 seasons or so. Now that Kobe’s moved on from his ball hog/d-bag days and his D is even better, I have to drop him down to #2 (though he still drops #s like 22 and 21 in game 3 and something like 29 and 17 last night to make you remember that he is absolutely going down as one of the greats, even if he has had to vacate his throne as best player in the game.)

Three Stacks, yes we will, but there’s still no guarantee that that’s a “when” for my team…

I also have a much better theory as to why Horry sucks so much now. He’s ancient! He also may’ve developed a drinking problem shooting Hancock.

  13. JayTea says:

Horry’s nickname is big shot, implying that he makes a few big shots here and there. It’s not Mr.consistent or big clutch. He has always tossed up a ton of bricks and now with his reduced ability and reduced playing time, he can’t get in a rythym. He does still do great things on D, I was worried he was gonna poke that ball away from Walton in one late sequence last night.

  14. Daily boy says:

Horry for the past two years has been more effective at committing hard fouls than playing basketball. I’m glad this washed up dude is done, take all your NBA rings and ride off into the sunset.

  15. Celts Fan says:

Horry may be old, but if this comes down to a game 7, DON’T LEAVE HIM OPEN. Ask CP3 how that works out…

  16. Chuck...Haters come in all fashions and forms so bear arms says:

    @rangerjohn
are you freakin insane? Maggette. Dude NEVER passes the ball!! LMAO!!

  17. Chuck...Haters come in all fashions and forms so bear arms says:

Horry is done. All things must come to an end. Dude had a decent career. Now it’s time to fold up the tent and go fishen.

  18. Jim says:

I assume Horry is done, since he almost retired last year. Horry is definitely not leaving Texas, his child is sick and his family lives in Houston. He has said before he would only consider the Spurs or Rockets.

  19. Jim says:

And Timmy, sorry. When Rangerjohn and I are against you, it’s a wrap.

  20. GEE...ain't the one that will pay for ya phone says:

He should have taken that shot last night. 1 final chance at even more glory.

  21. rangerjohn says:

    chuck
corey is very athletic, can get his own shot, rebounds, he is a good fit really, because if anyone can keep him in line with the team its pop and duncan

  22. Three Stacks says:

Corey Maggette doesn’t have a consistent shot. I get to watch him play a fair amount since Clippers games are always on, and I for one would not want him on my team. He’s injury prone, and needs the ball in his hands to play well. When you got Parker and Ginobili handling the ball most of the time, he’s not gonna be able to play his game.

With the ball movement and spacing the Spurs have, wouldn’t it be better to get a SF who can shoot the lights out? Like Mike Miller or someone of that ilk.

And dude is from Duke, after all.

  23. Jerry says:

Love Horry for all the huge shots he hit for the Lakers, but just like Barkley said: “It’s over”

Who knows? maybe he has another year left in him. Right now his slump might have to do with confidence more than anything else, perhaps that decreases with age as well.

  24. Dagomar says:

I’d say Lebron is the best player in the game, but being the best isn’t the same as having the biggest impact on team wins. Ultimately, as a winner Duncan is #1 in the league, and that’s in large part because he is this era’s dominant centre (with apologies to Shaq).

  25. Diego says:

Spurs are done for this year; they do need a bit of an injection of youth for next year to remain up with the big dogs.

Pop in all seriousness should be playing Matt Bonner in spots this series. He may not be all that athletic, but big red is a very good, smart ballplayer who can really nail the 3. He also has size. Look for him to perhaps make a guest appearance in the next game if Horry sucks again.

By the way, how bummed is Damon Stoudamire relegated to wearing a suit to almost every game?

  26. marcus the great says:

    lol @ he’s from Duke

  27. K Dizzle - Pasadena - Laker fan since 1982 says:

    @ post 24

    Lebron?
You didn’t happen to catch him missin jumpshot after jumpshot in the playoffs?

As for Tim, he’s the best big, but because of his weakness at free throw shooting, the best has to be obe.
    No weaknesses = the best

  28. doc says:

Horry need to go get some pussy on a island somewhere and relax. His career is finito.

  29. Kenneth Lee says:

Robert Horry has stated in several interviews that he goes by “Rob”, not “Bob”. His moniker, perhaps obsolete by now, is “Big Shot Rob”, not “Big Shot Bob”. While some of us may not be fans of Horry (including I), his names should be listed accurately in the press.

  30. Three Stacks says:

Dude, shut up, like anyone cares what he wants to be called.

Bob Horry sounds much funnier than Rob Horry, and Big Shot Bob has a better ring to it. So Bob Horry it is.

  31. johnsacrimoni says:

Over on ESPN, JA Adande makes Horry’s case for the HOF. I like Adande a lot, but I don’t think Horry even remotely deserves the hall. I don’t care how many rings the guy has you don’t go to the hall of fame averaging 7 and 5.
