Celtics win Game 1; Bulls win #1
Ray’s lost his smile… (photo. Bootsy Holler)Going into the Eastern Conference Finals, one of the biggest storylines was how the Celtics would deal with Chauncey Billups, who gave them problems throughout the regular season (22.7 ppg, 7 apg in three previous meetings) due to the fact that he’s typically too strong, too quick or too crafty (sometimes all three) for each of Boston’s guards. Chauncey was coming off a hamstring injury that forced him to essentially miss three games in the Orlando series, but was reportedly rested and ready to go before last night’s Game 1. Billups didn’t look 100%, though, and got outplayed by Rajon Rondo as Boston won another home game. Billups put up 9 points and 2 assists, while Rondo had 11, 7 dimes and 5 steals … Kevin Garnett (26 pts, 9 rebs) played with an offensive aggression we haven’t consistently seen from him in these playoffs — or most of his postseason appearances for that matter — and Paul Pierce hadn’t cooled off from his Game 7 showing against Cleveland, dropping 22 points. But what really put Boston over the top in last night’s game was that when KG and Pierce were sharing the ball, other guys were producing. Eddie House, James Posey, Kendrick Perkins, Rondo and Leon Powe weren’t killing the Pistons offensively, but they filled their roles and made shots in big spots … Can’t say the same for Ray Allen (9 pts, 3-for-10 FG’s). He had a few layups and dunks, but otherwise could not hit a jumper to save his life. We’re not gonna jump the gun like some people and say Ray is done, but whatever he’s going through is major. It wasn’t that long ago, just a couple of months, when this guy was ripping it up in the All-Star Game. Now he’s playing like Damon Jones with a green light … Tayshaun Prince (16 pts) and Antonio McDyess were the best players on the floor for Detroit, but they simply didn’t get enough out of Billups and Rasheed (3-for-12 FG’s). Funny, we didn’t see too much screaming and posturing from Rasheed after his first dunk. Except of course when was directed at the refs. His act is getting a little tired … After the game, KG said he and Rasheed are mirror images of each other, which was kind of strange. It seemed more than anything that Garnett was just trying to avoid providing any bulletin-board material. KG also told Michelle Tafoya, “You look good in pink, girl.” … The Dime crew was at the NBA Entertainment studios in Secaucus, N.J., last night for the Lottery proceedings, where the Bulls surprisingly landed the #1 overall pick despite having a 1.7% chance at it. As soon as the picks were decided we posted our first Dime ’08 NBA mock draft. Who’s going first out of Mike Beasley and Derrick Rose? Which budding All-Star is getting O.J. Mayo as a teammate? And what are the Knicks gonna do after falling out of the Top-5? … Spotted in the schmoozing/food area beforehand: Pat Riley, Rudy Gay (repping Memphis), Mike Dunleavy Sr. (repping the Clippers), Howard Eisley, Charles Smith, Larry Bird (repping Indiana), Mitch Richmond (repping Golden State), Fred Hoiberg (repping Minnesota), John Starks, Dwyane Wade (repping Miami), Kevin Durant (repping Seattle), a couple of the Maloof Brothers, Mike D’Antoni (repping New York), Stu Jackson and David Stern … And, of course, there was Jay-Z (repping Cleveland — um, we mean New Jersey). Hova wasn’t rolling with nearly as big of an entourage as we predicted, but he was still shadowed all night by a diesel, square-jawed Navy SEAL-looking bodyguard. Jay spoke to the Maloofs when he first arrived, mingled a bit, then disappeared during the allotted interview time until he resurfaced in the studio for the Lottery taping. The media was informed that we were “not allowed” to interview Jigga; that he would only be doing some select TV spots and that unless the Nets won the Lottery, he was leaving immediately afterwards … Did you hear when ESPN’s Doris Burke asked Jay about his role with the Nets. “I’m a part-owner,” he said. “I invested my hard-earned money.” Which reminded us of this particular Jay-Z lyric: “Take what Forbes figured and figure more / ‘Cause they forgot to account what I did with the raw.” … Funniest sight of the night: Shortly after D-Wade arrived and shed his jacket, bag and dress shoes and changed into sneakers, we saw a girl who worked for the NBA whose job was to carry Wade’s discarded stuff around. And one time D-Wade was walking by the big-screen TV when “SportsCenter” was showing Mike Breen and Jeff Van Gundy in the crowd at the Red Sox game the other day. “That’s news?” D-Wade laughed … Second-funniest sight of the night: When it got around time for all the team reps to go into the studio for the TV taping, each was escorted by an NBA employee. Even Mike Dunleavy. Really? Like Dunleavy doesn’t know exactly how the whole thing works by now? After all these years he’s probably on a first-name basis with the bartender … Overheard during the night: “Kevin Durant needs to see Rudy Gay’s suit guy.” Not to be mean or anything, but we’ve never really got the impression that Durant cares too much about things like clothes and hair. Most of the time he’s wearing sweats and doesn’t seem to try for the waves — as compared to teammate Jeff Green, who has a pair of Air Force 1′s to match every outfit he owns, and he keeps his waves on-point. Durant’s almost like Tim Duncan in that regard … Speaking of Duncan, he’s the headliner in what might be the worst NBA Draft of all-time. Put it this way: Adonal Foyle was taken in the Top-10 that year, and even today you can’t say it was a bad pick … Before he found out the Knicks’ draft position, D’Antoni was walking around with the plastered-on smile of a man who though he’d be coaching in the Western Conference Finals and had no idea how he ended up at the Lottery. His face after finding out the Bulls’ pick was classic. Something along the lines of “I should have taken the Chicago job.” … During the offseason, the Seattle Storm put together what’s being called the WNBA version of the ’07-08 Celtics. Their “Big Five” includes Sheryl Swoopes, Lauren Jackson and Yolanda Griffith, who each have league MVP’s under their belt, while Sue Bird and Swin Cash are All-Stars who have been integral players on championship squads. Last night Seattle beat Sacramento while getting 17 points apiece from Jackson, Bird and Cash … Earlier on Tuesday we heard Jerry Stackhouse being interviewed on the radio. Talking about the Lakers he said, “I’m still waiting to see the ticker on ESPN when someone launches an investigation into the Gasol trade.” He was joking. Sort of. Stack also said his superstition on game days is to always eat Gummy Bears. Asked who would win the championship, he picked the Spurs without hesitation … We’re out like KD’s suit game …

B’easy to Chi-town. Book it.
Rose is a home-town kid but he just isn’t the right pick for the Bulls. Lots more moves coming for the Bulls who now have too many frontcourt players – which is a good position to be in if you are rebuilding. I say Hinrich and Deng to Memphis for the #5 pick, Conley and spare parts. Use the #5 pick on DeAndre Jordan.

Not a bad thought Kobeef, but remember, Deng’s looking for an extension – the Grizz are trying to SHED payroll, not take it on (and he plays the same position as Gay anyway,) Hinrich’s value is as low as it’s ever going to be, and Conley was the 4th overall pick just last year, so I’d guess they’re not ready to give up on him yet. That’s a good thought, but wrong team to do it with (plus, you could get DeAndre later on – in the 7-10 range – and if I’m the Bulls, I definitely wouldn’t get rid of any of those guys now that you’re getting the #1 pick. Keep them together another year or 2 and see how everything works before you think about that. Worst case scenario, you can still always make a deal before the deadline…)
Hey Mike, I hope the extra $1-2M per was worth it. Enjoy the Danillo Gallinari era.
Rodney Stuckey is GOOD…
Ray Allen has NO CONFIDENCE WHATSOEVER. He passed up so many open shots last night and looked unsure when he took shots. He made an impact with solid D and running the offense well, but he needs to make a friggin J if we’re going to actually beat Detroit.

He constipated with the shot right now, straight strainin.
I like what I saw coming from KG. He had it going. P-Dub looks like he has found himself for real. Again I see Boston taking all the home games and winning this in 7 again.
Game wasn’t as chippy and hard foully as I thought it would be.
Crazy how Sheed gets away with all the screaming and antics and doesn’t get T’ed up nearly as quick as some other stars.
Detroit just didn’t look into it. I promise they are the most laid back team ever. Now Detroit is a team that is never desperate. That is not always good though.
KG’s dream shake is looking nice again.
Martin had the episode on where “Dragonfly Jones” demonstraiting Ky-rot-tai. I promise Otis and Dragonfly were two of his funniest characters.

PALakerFan says:
Billups injury will cost them this series. Detroit needs to win game 2 to get this, and Billups ain’t gonna be right for game 2 either. Boston has no answer for Rip or Tayshaun, but Sheed falls in love with jumpers rather than doing damage in the paint.
Ray needs to chill. Trying way too hard. Start by making a 15 footer Ray before jacking more 3′s.
I hope the C’s pull this out. I’d much rather see Lakers-Celts.

Bulls should take Beasley and sign or trade for Baron Davis. Davis/Hinrich, Gordon, Deng, Beasley, Noah – that’s a pretty good starting 5.
How many times did D’Antoni puke last night? What an f’in riot!!! As soon as he walks into the office today and sees Steph, Eddy, and Zach he’ll probably start crying. What are the chances he quits already and takes the Bulls offer?

I rather have the 3 rings and deep into the playoffs every year over a bunch of hardware before I ever saw em play. What do yall think?

I thoroughly enjoy this team now even though they’ve only won 1 title and had a shitload of really good teams in the last 15 years. Having a team that has a chance to win it every year is way better than hanging your hat on shit that happened before you could appreciate it.

@Celts fan
The bulls can’t keep that team together. Gordon and Deng can opt out of their contract this year, and they want Max contracts. So forget that, I wouldn’t pay those guys max salaries, they are just role players, but they also have the option to match any offer that’s given, I would let Deng go, seeing as Beasley and Deng play the same position. That’s if Chicago is smart enough to see that Beasley IS the number 1 pick.

Somebody put the bulls situation in perfectly yesterday. They are in a great position, but Paxson will mess it up. Signing Ben Wallace to that contract still baffles me to this day. We are in desperate need for a PG…but we also need an inside presence. So we can’t go wrong either way with Rose/Beasley. Hopefully in trading for whichever piece we don’t draft we don’t have to give up Haslem. (Unless of course we’re getting someone 3x better). Everyone saying detroit NEEDS to win game 2 is out of their mind. Boston is supposed to win on their home court, and they blow hardcore on the road, so game 2 is not a must win for the pistons.
If I were the celtics I’d be worried about the fact that both sheed and billups sucked out and the game wasn’t locked up until the end. detroit played terrible while KG came out intense (big suprise, it’s game 1, not 7) and pierce had a solid game…

Bama fans from all over the U.S. come to Tuscaloosa for the home games even if they don’t plan to attend the game. I am American yes, but my grandfather (straight off the boat Italian) was my hero growing up. We watched a lot of soccer (he, at 68, almost started crying when Baggio air-mailed the PK in the ’92 Finals) and ND football together, so that’s where that came from…
I hear ya on the Cowboys too. As long as the people that loved them when they were “America’s Team” stuck around through the Chad Hutchinson/Quincy Carter era (or in my case, stuck around through the past decade of ND football) I have no problems with that…

I figured there was a story there; that’s cool you have that with gramps. Catching the replay today?
And absolutely, there is a real pride in sticking with a struggling team…but it’s so much easier when there’s a lot of hardware in the past.

I’m hoping to catch the replay Jim. I’ve avoided ESPN.com like the plague since kickoff so hopefully it’ll be a surprise…
There is some pride in routing for those teams, but just cuz they had a lot of rings doesn’t make it easier to follow (to me anyway.) I don’t really remember the Tim Brown Irish teams and missed out on the “Bird when he was still Larry Legend and not old with a bad back” teams, so it’s almost just taunting you there, just beyond when you can remember! I’ve seen a lot, but between the Pats (Spygate aside, and I think it’s been a little overblown, but he DID cheat and act like a pissed off 5 year old – and that 5 year old would be embarrassed by his lack of any semblance of sportsmanship too,
between 16-0 – which ended badly but was a hell of a ride and much easier to swallow w/ 3 previous rings and the Rams upset (not to mention 4 of the best SuperBowls ever played just from a great game standpoint, completely ignoring who won and lost) and the Sox ending all talks of curses and all that crap, I got to see some GREAT moments, and see my teams win some rings while I was in college and able to enjoy them right.
I hope all the tortured Eagles and Cubs fans (and any other long-suffering teams I’m missing) get to experience that with their teams someday…

Celts I had you older too.
Rockets will prolly do something dumb. They should trade up though and try to get D.J. Augustin or Donte Green.
I heard Mutumbo is staying so big man wise I wouldn’t go first round for a 5.
2nd round if Hibbert (Georgetown) or Hasheem Thabeet (however you say it) from Uconn are available then I take them then.
I have went to different sites and most say Robin Lopez but I don’t know bout going first round on him.
Kyle Weaver might be a look too. Really hard to say.
Just about every starter for the Rockets is having surgery this off-season, so no telling how things will pan out.

Ya GEE, I got crazy in college and have been domesticated by a 9-5 and calmed down a lot, so you don’t see me acting all crazy on these boards too often (the G-Men Parade post being an exception!)
I don’t really agree on using a #1 on Sideshow Robin either, but someone’s going to apparently (though I guess he is a good defender, rebounder, and shot blocker, so who knows.)
Thabeet and Hibbert are supposed to be late 1st, but neither would be a bad pick as a backup center – Deke can’t play forever even if he seems to want to try – (though Kyle Weaver would be solid and probably a better fit, he’s supposed to be as high as the Celtics pick at the end of the 1st until as late as the mid 40s, so that may be possible – and he’s who I’m hoping we get if there aren’t any legit centers available, THAT MEANS OVER 6’8″ DANNY. Richard Roby’s supposed to be a solid sleeper with a nice jumper that could be a great value in the 2nd too. You guys need a real 2 coming off the bench just as bad as we do. These undersized guys are not getting it done.
Donte Green would be good too, but I’d be shocked if he’s not in the top 10 by the time the draft rolls around. He’s too big with too much talent (I don’t know his off-the-court situation though. He may be worse than Pacman Jones for all I know, but if I’m drafting, that’d be the only reason he’d be out of my top 10.)

I can’t believe the faith some of you guys have in Detroit. Of course, the Celts aren’t really making a name for themselves this year in the playoffs either…
Whoever comes out of the west will win. And unless something crazy happens to Kobe, it will be the Lakers. And I am NOT a Laker or Kobe fan.

ya Doc, but Smarty Jones ALMOST won the Triple Crown. The way that city rallied around him was hilarious and truly telling of how bad the city’s sports scene has gotten (went to college in Philly, lived there during that.) The good news is, you can watch a local heavyweight champ, you just gotta hit Play…
