Boston Finally Gets a Road Win; Pistons lose home court
Good thing Boston finally won a postseason road game; the amount of negative Celtics media coverage was threatening to get within striking distance of the fawning puff pieces. At times Boston looked dominant while beating the Pistons at The Palace last night, at times they looked downright shook, but overall they played well enough to get their confidence back that they can beat any team in any building … Kevin Garnett put up 22 points and 13 boards in a game where the C’s led by 18 at the break and by as much as 24 in the second half, but down the stretch he (and the entire C’s offense) was kind of terrible as the Pistons drew within double-digits in a last-gasp run by slapping on a zone defense. In the last three minutes Garnett threw up one fadeaway that hit nothing but glass, then fired an air-ball on another jumper, but Detroit couldn’t capitalize when they had opportunities. Chauncey Billups committed one crucial turnover and missed a couple of shots that the Pistons needed to go down to have a chance … Billups (6 pts, 4 asts) again wasn’t himself. He played less than 30 minutes and only made one field goal, a three-pointer late in the fourth quarter. Kind of like what’s been going on with Manu Ginobili in the Lakers/Spurs series, if Chauncey even played just OK in Detroit’s two losses, they could be up 3-0 at this point … Ray Allen played a little better, dropping 14 points but only going 1-for-6 beyond the arc. Paul Pierce scored a quiet 11, but the C’s got solid contributions from guys like Kendrick Perkins, James Posey and Sam Cassell, who finally got some PT … In the third quarter Rajon Rondo threw a pass that was so bad, Jeff Van Gundy could only scream, “What was THAT?” while Mark Jackson was speechless … Two standout Rasheed Wallace moments: First, he shined in the Pistons’ intro video where they ran off each of the team’s Eastern Conference Finals appearances, then ‘Sheed is shown sitting in a film room and looks back at the camera saying “We’re baaaaack!” with an evil laugh. Second, there was a play in the second half where Ray Allen drove and got his layup blocked by ‘Sheed, sending Ray crashing to the floor into the baseline seats. You’d think Detroit would have numbers because of this, but Ray somehow got up and beat Rasheed down the floor. ‘Sheed was basically walking … Jason Maxiell deserves props for stuffing KG’s seemingly unblockable turnaround jumper that he uncorks after the shoulder-shimmy. Isn’t Max like 6-4? … Ever since we said during the Orlando series that the Pistons don’t have any notorious floppers, Rip Hamilton has stepped up his flopping to an almost Ginobili-ish level. In the first quarter Rip (26 pts) and KG had their arms tangled, and as soon as KG made the slightest movement with his elbow, Rip dropped like he’d been smacked in the jaw. It was Garnett’s second foul and sent him to the bench for a while … If KG is one of those Pierce/Gilbert Arenas types who will never forgive or forget the teams that passed on him in the Draft or the players taken in front of him, he’s gotta be loving this postseason run. He already vanquished Joe Smith, who was taken #1 in the ’95 Draft, and in this series has a chance to take out both Antonio McDyess (#2) and ‘Sheed (#4). Garnett won’t be able to get Jerry Stackhouse (#3) any time soon in the playoffs, though, unless the Mavs get a lot better in the next couple of years … Rodney Stuckey (17 pts, 4 stls) is this year’s Daniel Gibson, the rookie who no one really talked about in the regular season but is stepping up and looking like a vet in the postseason. Keep in mind that Stuckey is making $1.5 million this season while Brian Scalabrine is “earning” twice as much … Yesterday was Tracy McGrady‘s birthday. He celebrated by doing what he does every year: Watching the later rounds of the NBA playoffs from home … We’re out like the Rockets …

Too many mislapes because of their energy tonight,Celtics stole one. Billups needs to be more consistent he needs to play at a high level for these guys to win. The Celtics are not very good in my opinion they are a jump-shooting team i’ve said this before doc rivers is not a good coach offensively he relies on assistant TT’s game plan for defense and KG’s intensity/leadership. you don’t live by jumpers you die by jumpers whoever is more aggressive and attacks the basket is the winner.

As a proud Piston fan I must say I’m glad they got booed. Detroit is tired of this “I’ll play when I want to attitude.” Also WTF is the deal with Mr. No Shot they need to start Stuckey. Billups and Wallace epitomize this no show attitude the Pistons carry. This Fake Azz swagger they seem to display is old man up and play hard. Flip finally showed some balls and played Stuckey extensively now it’s time for us to see “AJ”.
BTW
Prince and Hamilton are the only starts that really ball hard all the time, maybe Mcdyess the other 2 can kick rocks after this year. 4Realz

“Billups said on Friday he wouldn’t be 100 percent healthy during the rest of the playoffs.” -Detroit News
I think the Pistons are done with Billups injured and they know it which is probably the reason for the half-assed effort. Billips is not the most athletic or skilled player the Pistons have but he pushes them over the top when he is on. It is too bad for the pistons that they made it this far only to fall to injuries.

I didn’t think the Celtics played that great last night, but wow did the Pistons suck. Rip played well but at the end seemed to force the issue when they got within 9, but since no one else really had it going it made sense that he’d try to get an early mid-range J on some possessions. As for the fans that booed, it’s the conference finals and the Pistons came out with as much energy as a 85 year old, fat paraplegic. If you’re not going to ball hard in the confrence finals, when will you?
Max’s block on KG was nasty. But then KG came down and knew he’d go for the block again and gave him a nice pump fake and drew the foul. Nice play.
Doubt KG has a checklist of dudes that went before him in the draft. He was coming outta HS back before everyone came out then (for awhile). KG wasn’t disrespected by GMs who didn’t think his college game (which he never had) wouldn’t translate in the NBA.
I think Stuckey seems a little more legit than Gibson did last year, but I could be wrong. Both are suprising rooks who hit shots beyond their years.
Liked the zone at the end by Flip. It made Doc have to coach… which he obviously couldn’t.

DAMN IT! That’s the point! He’s not one of the best because he can’t get his mind to focus on baketball and winning. Don’t compare that douche to the greats. (cough, SI)

Dime Mag:”Kind of like what’s been going on with Manu Ginobili in the Lakers/Spurs series, if Chauncey even played just OK in Detroit’s two losses, they could be up 3-0 at this point.”
Dang. Some serious hatred spewing forth. If Rondo played just okay in game 2, Boston would be 3-0. If my aunt had a dick, she’d be my uncle. Enough with the pointless IFs. Plus, the Manu comparison is so ridiculous. When the Spurs get housed by 30 points, it means it would take more than Manu playing “just okay” for the Spurs to win. Bringing up that comparison just makes your argument look weaker.
Also, it wasn’t the zone specifically that messed up the celtics late in the game. It was the half court trap, off of a zone set, that exposed some weakness in Boston. Don’t think they’ll be able to do it that successfully in the future. Most likely the Celts will have worked on it on the day off. One of the TV commentators was saying that Detroit should think about trapping for a larger part of Game 4. But that would require the Pistons to play with energy for the whole game (gasp!). Also, the trap doesn’t work as well when the team is ready for it and isn’t trying to bleed the clock. That’s why traps are mostly used as a changeup on the pro level, not as a base defense.
