Clockers
Dwight Howard (photo. Mannion)Right after the final buzzer sounded and the Pistons had taken a 2-0 series lead on the Magic, we got a great camera shot of Stan Van Gundy spewing venom at a referee, screaming “That’s f***ing bulls***!” before storming off to the locker room. He could have been talking about a couple of things: Like the clock-operator goof at the end of the third quarter that bought the Pistons extra time for Chauncey Billups to knock down a three right before the buzzer (which became very significant since the game ended up being close). Or Van Gundy could’ve been mad at the weak off-ball foul called on Keyon Dooling when Orlando was trying to send Detroit to the line late in the fourth quarter, a call that gave the Pistons the free throws AND the ball back, enabling them to ice the game easily … Then again, SVG could have directed some of that anger at Rashard Lewis, too. After busting their ass to stay within striking distance, Orlando was down by two points with 17 seconds left. They ran a great inbounds play that got Rashard the ball wide open from three-point land straightaway, with Dwight Howard (22 pts, 18 rebs) playing fullback to seal off anyone who came near Lewis (20 pts). But for whatever reason Rashard passed up the triple, deciding to drive into the defense and throw up a tough scoop shot that missed. Dwight missed the tip-in attempt and Hedo Turkoglu bobbled the ball out of bounds, and that was Orlando’s last good chance at stealing a win before the series goes to Florida … Not to put the entire loss on Rashard’s shoulders, but they’re paying him $118 million to come through in moments like that. No reason he shouldn’t have taken that three; it just seemed like he didn’t want it … Trying to quell theories that the end-of-quarter clock issue was some Detroit home cooking, it was pointed out that the assigned clock operator for the game was actually from Minnesota. Mike Fratello jumped right on it: “So he probably knows Flip Saunders.” … Did you see Keith Bogans almost get dropped as he was backpedaling against a sprinting Billups? The only thing that saved Keith was grabbing Chauncey (28 pts) on the way down and taking the foul instead of making it onto YouTube … Jameer Nelson is getting better at his decision-making and played pretty well yesterday (offensively at least), but he still does stuff on occasion that makes you scratch your head. Late in the fourth quarter on a critical possession, Jameer (22 pts, 7 rebs) took the ball and went careening to the hoop without a thought of passing, trying to muscle in a layup over Jason Maxiell that got sent back in his face. At some point Jameer will realize that he’s not at Chester High School or St. Joe’s anymore and doesn’t have to do it all by himself … It’s kind of silly to write them off after two games, but the Spurs really look like they might be done. Going into Game Two with a built-in asterisk (Tim Duncan had apparently been deathly sick for the last two days), they kept it close in the first half but got blown out in the third quarter on their way to getting almost 20-pieced … Yesterday on DimeMag.com we looked at some of the League’s deadliest “Soul Crushers” — those signature plays that are more than your average backbreaker and can swing momentum in one second. That would include Kobe’s impossible fadeaway and Rasheed’s long-ball, but last night we saw that Peja’s three-ball might be the coldest Soul Crusher in the L. Multiple times last night, just when you thought the Spurs had a bit of a chance, Peja (25 pts, 5 threes) would rise and fire and put them back in an insurmountable hole … How freaking good is Chris Paul? He was incredible last night, putting up 30 points and 12 assists with just one turnover, keeping the ball on a yo-yo and actually making Tony Parker (11 pts, 3 asts) look slow. Can anyone remember the last time a point guard went into his first postseason and dominated like this? You’d have to go back to 1984, when 22-year-old Isiah Thomas averaged 21 points and 11 dimes in his first playoff series with the Pistons. But even that team got knocked out in the first round. CP is looking like he could knock off the defending champs … Duncan had 18 points and 8 boards but still wasn’t his usual postseason self. Maybe we were wrong and Melvin Ely is some kind of TD expert. Maybe he is the 7-foot Ruben Patterson. And if he can sell this whole “Duncan Stopper” thing, he’ll have a job in the League as long as Duncan is playing … If San Antonio is gonna get back in this series, they need a big game from Manu Ginobili. So far he’s been turning the ball over early and letting it take him out of his game the rest of the way. They also need to consistently hit those corner threes. Bruce Bowen was playing out of his skull in Game 1, but yesterday he didn’t have it. And Ime Udoka couldn’t hit anything — those two and Michael Finley went a combined 2-for-13 beyond the arc and the team went 8-for-27 as a whole. Three-pointers are a big part of their offense and they’re not gonna beat New Orleans unless they get their act together. (Is Mario Elie still in shape?) … Did Mike Woodson do enough to save his job by taking the Celtics to Game Seven? That’s just one of the decisions ATL’s front-office has to make this summer. More importantly they’ve got a free-agent Josh Smith to deal with. What would you do to keep the Hawks relevant? … A couple bits of ridiculousness HERE and HERE that had us laughing all day. Funny how neither clip has anything to do with the Knicks, but we couldn’t help being reminded of Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph … We’re out like CP’s ceiling …

I love Chris Paul though, my man is aggressive and always willing to attack the basket, he is the engine that drives New Orleans. I hope he knwo that he won’t be getting those calls in San Antonio though.
Big ups to the Detroit refs for f*cking the game up with those lame calls, gotta love em, one rolls off of ratliffs hand and they call it on Hedo, Billups hits a shot that should not have counted, the NBA really needs to institute some kind of replays or something cause this sh*ts getting ridiculous. I’m starting to think these refs are getting paid under the table or something!

Any Gm in his right mind wouldn’t keep Mike Woodson, it wasn’t his half A*s coaching that got the Hawks to game 7, it was the Celtics playing like crap, mixed with the referees giving them very favorable calls, and them just running the celtics out of the building, but if they give that retard an extension, they are asking for a losing franchise for his entire tenure.
Jameer was hooping tonight, but you’re right, he was making some bad decisions. I guess aroyo isn’t getting any PT. Rashard Lewis is NOT a clutch player, he showed that tonight. Orlando gave 118 million dollars to a role player, what a bad investment.
They would have been better off getting the ball to Hedo, who has been hitting clutch shots ALL year.
Melvin Ely is no Duncan stopper at all, the spurs are just getting outclassed on both ends, and byron scott is killing poppovich in this mental chess match, did you hear him during the interview, he wouldn’t even tell the reporters the adjustments he had to make during the game, dude was on some CSI type stuff.
Orlando will bounce back, all summer Dwight will have time to reflect on developing a mid range jumper, because out muscling everybody on the block will only work for so long. If he developed just a LITTLE range, dude would be the MOST dangerous big man in the league. STAT can’t rebound like him, he overpowers Yao, as long as he keeps that caveman mentality, he will only be relegated to dunking on people at oppurtune moments instead of dominating whenever he wants.
Well I gave my synopsis on tonights robbery and raping.

no question the spurs got out played. on the other hand the hornets only did what they where supposed to, win the home games.
paul is a thug, nothing like intenionally running into someone (bowen) in 2 consecutive games and bouncing off like a pinball to try to get a call on the other guy. at least the refs made 1 good call last night, or no call on that BS. how about wright climbing parkers back for a rebound, and then getting the refs to call it on parker. i though when you went over someones back the foul was on you, and i though it was generally against the rules to walk up someones back with your feet.
or how about bonzi smacking manu in the head to cause a turnover.
the spurs defense was TERRIBLE, and the hornets defense was NOT GOOD but not good beats terrible 2 out of 2 so far. spurs need to get with chip england and learn how to shoot open shots real fast. they also need to stop shooting outside shots and attack the rim. when they attack (no mater who) the other team gets in foul trouble every time (ask tyson).
worst then the 1st

whatever the case is with the flopping on chris paul, he’s still an evil genius when it comes to running the offense. he was sensational.
as for the refs, I think I might have actually punched somebody during that game with all the no-calls and bad-calls if I were a player. I can’t believe they all held their composure so well, both teams. david west and paul were definitely giving the spurs a bit of their own flop medicine. and the spurs were incredulous at that.
when is Pop going to bench Finley for good and just play Barry and Udoka. Is the Manu playing from the bench strategy not working in this series?
One thing I noticed is that the Spurs passed up waaay too many shots from the perimeter. It’s like they were told to keep driving, but the Hornets were giving them the outside shot. So Dime is right, they gots ta make shots. Otherwise this might actually be an unfathomable sweep. Sweep the defending champs? holy hot damn, batman, that’s just crazy talk!! If the Lakers and Hornets met in the western confrence finals. That might be the best series of the whole whole playoffs. Chris Paul will torch the Lakers and Kobe will torch the Hornets, it’s going to be about the supporting cast.

I don’t know about calling Chris Paul a thug, thugs don’t whine for calls and flop all the time. I guess in these playoffs you have to look for the home team to get the favorable calls. Look at the Detroit games, them cats got calls for points they shouldn’t have even got! I’m still mad about that.
But hey, it is what it is, I’m picking the Hornets to win the series, but let’s get real people, the Hornets are not sweeping the spurs, and they are not beating the spurs at home. Poppovich is a great coach and he will adjust, and this will be a 7 game series, NOT a sweep
But you are right ranngerjohn, the referees did a terrible job for both games. We need the NFL rules man. We need the replay, cause I saw a lot of calls last night that was just plain wrong to any man’s naked eye!

Chris Paul dirty??? Yeaaaa I can see that. He does a lot of punk stuff. My favorite of last night was getting his legs purposely mixed in with Vaughn’s (GEE’s opinion) to make him fall and then he threw his hands up real fast like he didn’t mean to or didn’t do nothing.
I forgot all about CP hitting a dude in the nutzzz.
Granted he does get pushed around a lot and bumped cause I guess dudes don’t like how he lights them up like a Vegas strip.
As much as Orlando can complain about the injustices done to them, they did enough idiotic stuff to not say nothing and just walk away.
Hedo’s quick *** three, the scoop shot and honestly they just looked real undisciplined out there towards the end.
Can’t recall a game where I kept hearing “Now (insert name here) has 4 fouls…Now (insert name here) has 5 fouls”.
Seriously I think Dwight Howard could break someone’s arm if it got caught in between him and the rim the wrong way on a two hander.
Got to love a Dwight Howard dunk off a missed shot.
Same with a Tyson oop.
This is the thing with San An. It’s one thing to lose when you are not on your home floor. Still it’s another when games aren’t that close? You would like to think they would at least make it close, but CP3 is the conductor to the orchestra right now. He got his team playing whatever he want. All San An can do is try to catch the beat and dance and they are always off outside of little runs.
If San An does win on their floor but N.O. makes it close, it won’t be a good look for San An. First they actually got to win one though.
Think the whole Hornet through fire thing would have been funnier if the Hornet would have actually caught on fire.

Both series are far from over.
The Pistons got some breaks in the win last night and that series could just as easily been tied heading back to Orlando. I think Orlando takes both games at home and then we have a battle.
Dwight’s lack of an offensive game is really showing, like someone mentioned and Rashard is not looking like a $100 Million Man.
The Spurs are champs and I have learned that you can’t count them out. If Timmy really is sick this series could change easily when he recovers. Gotta say though, CP3 is looking like a monster.

chuck,
imo he is a thug, just me i guess. never really liked him. the things he gets away with because he is the nbas boy and he plays in the nbas new favorite town. he gets calls that guys like tim duncan would never get.
the only issue i see with replay, it would slow the game down way to much, i would not have gotten in bed at midnight last night because the game would still be going. i agree they need to do something though, i would suggest adding another ref and minumum 2 or 3 refs have to agree on every call.i see to many calls where 1 ref makes a bad call and the other 2 where “out of possition” to see what happened. if there was another ref, then paul might have gotten called for pushing parker out of his way, and duncan would not have given him an “and 1″ for slapping his hand (i though the hand was part of the ball? i guess not if you are the protagal son)if there was another ref, then paul would have been called for running into bowen trying to get a call on bowen.
i am really tired of the outside shooters jumping into someone to get a call. manu does this all the time (he generally doesnt get those calls) but chris paul and steve nash do it all the time and get the calls. last series, nash jump backwards into bowen and bowen got hte call. it was sooo obvious.

@Jerry
They literally obliterated the suns in 5 games.
How did the suns wear them out?
Game 1= SAS=117 PHX=115
Game 2= SAS=102 PHX=96
Game 3= SAS=115 PHX=99
Game 4= SAS=86 PHX=105
Game 5= SAS=92 PHX=87
This is what you must understand, in basketball, you have bad games and that’s just the nature of the business. Shot’s aren’t always going to fall, and you are dealing with a team that has a lot of confidence right now. All those perimeter shooters are hard to gaurd when you have Tyson Chandler barrelling down the lane, and David West hoisting 15 footers at will, you literally have to pick your poison, so it’s not that San Antonio is tired, it’s just they have to figure out a way to stop that pick and roll, and slow Chris Paul down. Tony Parker obviously can’t gaurd Paul, and Bruce Bowen is just to slow for Paul, assignments don’t matter anyway, when you have to fight through picks and eventually switch anyway. Bruce Bowen won’t be able to fight through 70 percent of those picks and that leaves whoever had to switch in no mans land with Paul, Duncan and Oberto need to step up on the block when Paul penetrates, it’s the help defense for San Antonio that’s killing em, David West said something that was very true and mature, he said. “If one man beats one of our teammates we step up to help, so you are not just going to embarrass one man, you have to beat the team.”

The clock issue at the end of the 3rd quarter didn’t cost Orlando the game but I’m dumb founded at the poor ruling by the officials. According to the rules, they can have a team “do over” the play. That would have been the right call. That play just reitterates how poor the officiating has become.
May 6th, 2008 at 9:58 am
cbizzle says:
I guess everyone forgot about that fact that after that “momentum changing” shot to end the third, that Orlando promptly went on an 8-2 to start the fourth quarter. The Magic can blame the clock all they want, but the fact is they weren’t ready for the pressure and faltered down the stretch. The clock had nothing to do with Hedo Turkoglu taking a fadeaway 3 with 43 seconds left in the game and 20 on the shot clock when they were down by two. It had nothing to do with Rashard Lewis getting scared to take a big three down the stretch and opting to throw up some ugly awkward scoop shot. Way to throw 118 mil at a role player Orlando.

i also noticed the spurs ran the same play on their 1st possesion, and the 1st possesion after the half, a screen and roll for finley where he scored on the 1st and missed BADLY o nthe second. think the hornets didnt notices that is the set play at the begining of every half almost every quarter? do it with barry who isnt tired in the second half.

I lost a lotta respect for Rashard Lewis last night. Dude caught the rock, wide open and showed no heart for a dude who’s gettin paid basically to hit open threes.
I been sayin all season that the spurs were gonna hit the wall, not cuz they old or not a good team, but because year after year of deep playoff runs, injuries to their top 3 this season and summers of international ball will catch up….and it’s caught up. The series is far from over but it’s not a good look to get crushed twice and have to climb back in. Before the series, heads were sayin CP3 and TP was gonna be a wash, but N’Awlins ain’t Phoenix. Nash should have to do like Marion Jones in track and give his trophy’s back!

Damn my Spurs look like they may be playoff toast, there is just no way they are going to win in N’awlins, those people are too crazy. Well maybe this is just not their year, and that is okay y’all!
Chris Paul is not a thug, Jesus, he is looking like one of the best all-time point guards if anything. RangerJohn you need to chill on that noise, and I am a fellow Spurs fan. It looks like the pot calling the kettle black, you know people have endured Bowen’s tactics for this long and we get a tiny dose of our own medicine, now you know how those other guys feel bro. Yes it is frustrating, but no need to go calling players dirty or thugs.
Hornets defense was impressive, forcing all kinds of outside shots. 3rd quarter did the Spurs in AGAIN. You gotta give the team in blue their props, esp Chris Paul. Peja is killin’ me also, dude looked ready to retire last year and now he’s droppin’ bombs again.
Win with class, lose with class. There is always next season! (take note of that sentiment Phoenix fans)

Remy Nguyen says:
Chris Paul is a dirty player even when he was in college, Paul grabbed Julius Hodge testicles.
Paul was lauded for his competitive nature in ACC play, but he was also known for letting this competitive drive get the best of him at times. The most popularized example of this occurred during the last regular season game in the 2005 season. While guarding North Carolina State player Julius Hodge, Paul hit with a low blow. Despite replays to the contrary, after the game, Paul insisted, “I don’t believe I popped him … It was just the heat of the game. I’ve got too much respect for him to try to pop him on senior night.”[2] Hodge was initially indignant over the assault, stating “he punched me in the groin and the ref saw it … I got suspended for that (as a freshman). …I never play dirty like that.” Later, was able to joke about the situation, quipping “At first, I just wanted to find out if I could still have children. Once I figured out I could have children, it was all good.”[3] After reviewing the play, ACC officials elected to suspend Paul for Wake Forest’s next game, the first game of the ACC conference tournament. Without Paul, the Demon Deacons lost in the second round after a first round bye, coincidentally to North Carolina State.[4]

classy post SAS. I agree Paul’s not a thug and he does do some dumb stuff on the court, but like you said, the Spurs do plenty too.
Kobe’s finally getting that trophy today…
I’m PLEADING with all Boston fans that may be reading this; don’t start the “overrated” chant at LeBron again. It doesn’t work, it only pisses him off. They did that in Washington and got 20-pieced in an elimination game. Let’s just boo and leave it at that…

i for one dont defend bowen, and i will not go by with out point out the cp3 dirty plays. if bowen is dirty, fine but he hides it better then paul. paul is just blatantly dirty and doesnt care because they are not going to call “mr good guy” for that stuff. pushing people, hitting in the nuts, (he hit bowen in the nuts when bowen got suspended, and i would damn sure kick him too if he hit me) he travels almost as much as labron, carried the ball 4-5 times, you cant put your hand on the bottom of the ball, lift it then start dribbling again, (this is not to say parker didnt travel too with no call).
i like the guys numbers and what he has done for his team but damn the refs got to man up and make the right call every once in a while dont they?
screw the spurs conspiracy theories, i am all about the hornets/NO favoratism theory.

don’t know that Stockton was #1, but he was very dirty and got away with it for some obvious reasons (small white boy in a tiny market typically playing bigger guys so he could hide his dirty play - he was VERY sneaky!) and hasn’t really been called out on it as widely as he should’ve.

I just think when you lose you gotta show some level of respect for the other team. I know I hate the fact that the Spurs get no respect after 4 titles. They are definitely the top sports franchise of the decade yet they get no credit because of jerks in the media and fanbase that want to make such excuses like they are dirty, whiny, floppy, and my favorite - BORING. Whatever, they WIN and they probably beat your team along the way.
Just because you don’t root for them doesn’t mean you cannot appreciate what they have accomplished. Therefore, I show respect to New Orleans for beating them fair and square.
And not like they are cheating like the Patriots.
Oh one last thing - anybody that ever says the Spurs get favorable calls because they are the NBA’s team is out of their f*cking mind. Let me put it to you like this, they asked David Stern what his ideal matchup for the Finals would be a couple of years ago and he said, and I quote, “the Lakers versus the Lakers”. Why would the NBA promote a small-market team? If there was such a thing as NBA conspiracy, they would mos def be putting Boston vs L.A. in the Finals this year, which may happen, but only because both teams are legitimate contenders for crying out loud. The Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks wouldn’t suck so bad, either.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
rangerjohn says:
gee,
by that thinking the hornets COULD win in 7 (like the celts) but it puts the point out there that the hornets didnt do anything special they just did what they had to, it is on the spurs to break that trend. go back to NO 2-2 and it is a whole new series.
i had 3 fights, 1st i won with a toe hold, 2nd i won with a triangle choke, and i lost the 3rd by a stupid gillatine choke. (my own stupid fault for putting my head down. i was up on points and made a mistake, it happenes)

i agree with that post. i understand your point, i am just tired of hearing about how dirty the spurs are then watch not a single “dirty” play by the spurs eyt several by the opponents (hornets).
as for the lakers celtics conspiracy, think about this, the celtics pull off a lopsided trade that should have never happened, trading their entire team for 2 HOFers, in a gimme, then the lakers pull off a steal of a trade, trading an alstar for mike olawokandy’s smaller twin brother right about the time that baby kareem goes down. it is just very “suspicious” dont you think?
and there is no single person who can with a straight face justify the trades from the t wolves and grizly side of the ball. gifts just gifts. now did sterny have anything to do with that?

Celts Fan says:
Come on Rangerjohn, that KG trade was the best the TWolves were gonna get for him.
When you trade a superstar (when you’re trying to rebuild liek they were) you’re looking for 3 things: 1. Young talent, 2. Cap Space, 3. Draft Picks
For KG, the TWolves got Big Al and Gerald Green (both were considered really good prospects, Big Al actually is) in addition to Ryan Gomes (a good young player that’s a much better fit as a role player for a good team) and Sebastian Telfair (a flyer on a young guy at the end of his contract that may or may not have some potential.) They also got Theo Ratliff’s expiring contract ($14M off the books next year) and 2 #1 picks, one of which was their’s for this year, so A TOP TEN PICK.
Let’s recap:
1. Young talent: Big Al, Gerald (supposed to be a great prospect, obviously misevaluated, but at the time, that’s what he was considered,) Gomes, and Telfair (who’s deal is also expiring.)
2. Cap Space: About $15M - Ratliff and Telfair
3. Draft picks: Two first rounders. Theirs for this year (TOP TEN) and the Celtics 2009 one.
That’s not a gift, that’s a good deal (when you’re 2 years too late to the party anyway.) KG’s 31. If they’d dealt him 2 years ago, then maybe it’s not enough, but now, this was the best they were offered for KG, otherwise he’d be somewhere else.
May 6th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
rangerjohn says:
yeah i read that.
i am not worried really, while the hornets are not the chokes i mean the suns, look at that series as history, there was a blowout on both sides, and some close games but the spurs know how to win those close games. duncan and manu are 2 of the most clutch players ever and manu is built for close games. no hornet has really had to try to win a close one and i doubt they have the heart to do it. who knows they might but i still like our chances.
spurs in 6 so there! home cooking done right.
and thanks, that was actually the 1st triangle i have pulled in competition. i like the toe hold, or a heelhook myself. like the nasty knee on belly to armbar also, nothing better then seeing someone squirm while you drive your weight and knee into their sternum.
on a differnet note, shaq is a brown belt in jiu jitsu under royce gracie. now that is scary!
May 6th, 2008 at 1:19 pm

i dont agree, the best deal they could have gotten for kg was from the suns. i mean really just about any team in their right mind would have taken either amare or marion along with some picks or some baggage (remeber they could have gotten marion who is a very nice player, and had an expiring contract) for kg. the celts and wolves where buddies, and i am sure ster had a little “go ahead its a good idea” in his voice when he aproved the trade.
as for green being a “prospect”, really? the guy could not get off the bench on one of the worst teams in ther last 8 yrs and he was a good “prospect” try that on someone else. (remember i live in houston where gerald green is from and where he ended up to play what 15 minutes total for the rockets?)
the only thing good that the wolves got was jeferson (hmm amare or jefferson?) and the 1st round pick. everything else is a joke.

Celts Fan says:
Ranger, had the Suns been willing to trade Amare, I’m sure he’d be in Minnesota right now. and Marion’s nice, but he’s not the guy they were looking for (and his opt-out clause after this year probably scared them off. You don’t want to trade KG and have nothing to show for it by year 2 of life after KG.) Plus, what other pieces can Phoenix throw in? Also, that’s assuming Sarver would pay the extra $$$ to get KG (increase in salary of KG vs. Amare’s AND luxury tax implications of it) which he’s proven he won’t.
Gerald Green WAS a top-tier prospect AT THE TIME. Trust me, we’d all given up on it here in Boston too, but he was still considered one at the time. I’m not saying it should’ve been that way, just saying that it was.
You’re also conveniently forgetting that we traded them back their pick for this year, so again, A TOP TEN PICK. So essentially they got Big Al, Gerald, Gomes, $15M off the books, our 2009 1st rounder, and an Eric Gordon/DeAndre Jordan level prospect (assuming they don’t win the lottery, or it could be even better.) That’s not bad. It would have been MUCH better 2 years ago, but again, KG’s 31 and everyone knew they had to trade him, so they didn’t have much leverage.
May 6th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
SAS Sizzle says:
Celts Fan, whatever justification you can put on 100 pages of paper doesn’t change the fact that the KG deal was only pulled off because Kevin McHale and Danny Ainge are both ex-Celtics. Plain and simple. But you have to give Ainge credit for the Ray Allen deal nonetheless, because that move got KG on board.
And I still have nothing to say about Chris Wallace handing the Lakers Gasol. I don’t really care even though that move was FUBAR. I say it will be just be more fun to beat the Lakers. I have a feeling Mr. Wallace is like Joe Pesci in Goodfellas now - an Untouchable Made Man in Los Angeles. Can you say VIP in any champagne room he wishes?

May 6th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
rangerjohn says:
celt,
i dont knwo how you can sit with a straight face (maybe you are not actually) and try to tell everyone that cupcake boy was ever a “top prospect” when he could barely get off the bench in boston where he played 31 games his 1st year on a 33-49 team, then averaged 22 minutes on a 24-58 team then went to the wolves where he averaged 12 minutes in the 29 games he plaed. the kid can jump sure but what else made him a “good prospect?”
amare was the very 1st deal for kg, but they could not make the money work because they had already traded away kurt thomas and 2 picks. that trade doesnt happen and kg is playing with nash.
as for the owner of the suns not wanting to eat tax $$$, are you kiding me? have you seen the shaq deal yet? hmmm tax $$ for shaq, or tax $$$ for kg?
lets be real it was a buddy buddy deal no mater how you slice it.
May 6th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Celts Fan says:
Alright, all you guys always say, “McHale gave KG to the Celtics,” like Big Al didn’t average 20 and 10 this year, like Gerald was as badly regarded then as he is now, and forgetting that the last 2 things in this trade have yet to result in a tangible player, just the rights to pick 2 (one in the top 10 in a very strong draft!)
That’s fine, we’re all entitled to our own opinions. So let’s hear it, cuz all I keep hearing is that we got a gift, but no one’s given me a legit example of a trade that was better and out there (other than you Rangerjohn, but they never actually offered that or I’m sure that would’ve been done.)
WHAT BETTER DEAL COULD THE TWOLVES HAVE GOTTEN FOR KG THAT SATISFIES ALL 3 (young talent, cap space, draft picks) USUAL REQUIREMENTS FOR TRADING A SUPERSTAR?
Dime, help me out here. Am I just a homer or is that the best the Wolves could’ve done in their weakened leverage and 31 year old star?

SAS Sizzle says:
Why do you have such an issue admitting that the MAIN reason the trade actually went thru was the General Manager relationship? If those GM’s weren’t in place, it never would have happened.
Nobody said it wasn’t a good deal (at least I didn’t say that), Jefferson is really nice, and Minnesota did the right thing rebuilding even if it was several years too late.
May 6th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Celts Fan says:
SAS, I have an issue with that because people act like it’s the ONLY reason that deal went through, and make it out like there were a million better offers on the table and they just chose ours, and that’s just not the case.
Ranger, I COMPLETELY forgot about that Amare 3 team deal, but again, it didn’t go through because Marion wouldn’t do it, so IT COULDN’T HAPPEN. It would have been a better haul for KG, I’ll give you that, though I’m talking about deals that were actually possible.
May 6th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
rangerjohn says:
while the deal is not as “shady” as the lakers gift, i still feel it was a “gift” none the less.
it just fits the whole nba conspiracy thoeries out there.
and marion was not in the amare deal, for the suns it was an amare OR marion deal but they would never part with both.
imo the suns would have been better offereing amare then marion for 2 reasons, marion would have little problem defering to kg over amare (he hated playing second fiddle to a kid) and amare is soo limited defensively that the suns will not make it anywhere with him playing 100% on offense and 25% on defense.

When they play in San Antonio, I can see the Spurs going 2-0 at home.
Detriot won this game, no question. That shot clock error was significant but so was the dumb azz shot Turk put up. Even if he hits that shot it’s still dumb azz hell!
May 6th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Celts Fan says:
true enough Rangerjohn. Ok, still, at worst, the Celts offer was 2nd best (remember the Warriors were apparently offering Monta and some pieces, but for the price you’d have to pay Monta after this year/risk he leaves and the fact he’s pretty redundant with the rest of their roster of undersized 2 guards -Foye and McCants just among the rotation guys, that doesn’t work even though it was a good package.)
I just get sick of hearing the “well McHale and Ainge were friends so of course that’s where KG ended up” crap like McHale doesn’t have his own job to worry about and he’s Ainge’s crony (based on their careers, shouldn’t it be the other way anyway?)
Then, take a look at the list of stars that’ve been traded in the past few years:
AI
Matrix
KG
Pau
Bibby
Shaq
Ray Allen
JRich
Of those guys, you can say that only Miami trading Shaq got more back for their “star” (at this point, Shaq’s barely better than Andrew Bogut) than the Wolves did for KG, and Miami traded for another guy on this list and weren’t in, “Let’s just scrap it and start rebuilding” mode like every other team.
The shadiest move we made all year is the one no one really talks about in that ilk. Picking up Sam Cassell from a team that had to buy him out and then fill his roster spot w/ Smush Parker/D-League call-ups. You want to talk conspiracy, focus on that!

AI, pilly got a pretty nice deal for him too. miller, joe smith (cap space) and 2 picks for AI i take that too considering he was not gonna play anyway.
marion for shaq was all about chemestry and money, no gifts there.
ray allen, the sonics knew he was aging fast (and he has looked good and BAD this year) along with ankle problems for some guys they knew they would be dropping for cap space, not a bad deal for the sonics but if they could not have gotten rid of the cap space (west and wally) they would have given a gift there too.
richardson, not to sure about this one really, there had to be something going on in the locker room is all i can say.
as for cassel, that to me is no different then barry coming back to the spurs, gift or not it might just be.
the spurs got a gift out of the sonics (sonics got a little deal though) with thomas really just for a pick and elson. the pick was going to amount to little most likely, they dropped cap space and the got rid of elson who was next to worthless anyway. barry came back and needs more minutes.

fair enough man, my point is just that NO ONE gets fair value back for a superstar, so we all need to stop expecting more for them and saying, “___ didn’t get enough back for ____.” Agree to disagree I guess (and I agree completely on Ray Allen. He’s not the same guy he was 3 years ago. Thankfully he doesn’t need to be.)
you’re right on movies too. It’s all just constant remakes and awful sequals (Dumb and Dumberer anyone? Harold and Kumar Escape Guantonamo Bay was AMAZING though!) I’m a huge horror movie fan too, and they’re remaking tons of classics now (Hills Have Eyes, When a Stranger Calls, Wicker Man, Halloween, The Omen.) Last year they remade Halloween and The Omen. That’s the horror movie equivalent of remaking Goodfellas and Scarface. Some movies are too good to remake and stand the test of time, not to mention you can’t ever touch the original anyway, you just get compared to it for 2 hours and killed for any differences.
Speed Racer looks really good though. I was sold the second I saw the first trailer and “from the makers of The Matrix.” I was glad to hear Iron Man was so good. It looked really good, but then again, so did Transformers. All I ask is to be entertained. I don’t go in expecting The Godfather, but it’s amazing how much crap they put out that can’t even do that!
We didn’t need a 65 year old Rocky, we don’t need a geriatric Indiana Jones, and we absolutely could do without an aging Rambo. What’s next, a sequal to Hoosiers where a 40 year old Jimmy Chitwood goes to college to reclaim his one remaining year of eligibility?
May 6th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

*Which would of course be followed up with Hoosiers 3: Back to Basics, where an aging Chitwood has to come out of “retirement” to beat a younger player (played by Leslie Nielson) who keeps calling him out.

I don’t have any issue with the KG trade. I’ll put it like this, I was in a Fantasy League with my friend and we happened to make more trades with each other than other folks. I made as many offers to other teams but because we knew each other it was easy to pull the trigger because you don’t mind “helpin’ a brutha out” as they say. Nobody else would deal with me because they didn’t want to risk improving my team, that’s just how it goes.
Now lots of people were talkin’ about Barry getting bought out and returning to the Spurs as shady, well Celts Fan nailed it…the Cassell situation was 100x worse because the whole media was talking about him getting bought out so he could blatantly move to Boston. And yet I have no problem with the deal.

out of the 2 with team options, landry will get the option picked up, and novak i think will not.

puhhh please that mvp was the admirals
and please dont come back to me with water ever you read cuz the people who saw the series KNOW what happened there.
let me help a bit with that
the spurs team wasnt as good as the rockets yes they had a better record (better record and better individual numbers and robinson isnt the mvp wtf are u thinkin) the rockets doubled and tripled team david everytime he touched the ball because he didnt have great shooters around him the spurs couldnt do that with hakeem because everyone on the rockets could score. plus hill sucked as a coach.
if hakeem would play david one on one in that series like david played him the numbers would be equal just look at the vs all time between them they have similar numbers and david has almost all the wins.
robinson is the only superstar center of the 90s (shaq ewing and hakeem) who didnt play with a SUPERSTAR in his prime like the others.
kdizzle and gee shit you got me all worked up the admiral is my fav ever

pistons will either swep Orlando again…or win in 5….all hinges on Game 3.
and that move the CP3 put on San Antonio where he hesistated then split the 3 defenders was insane…
but yeah Pistons are gonna get some nice rest to watch the Cavs/Celtics batle…
I honestly thing that was the best punch Orlando could throw…all there big guns got numbers and still came out with the L. Dwight Howard is massive fun to watch…

slow down, dude. I met D Rob in the Cayman Islands about three weeks back. Solid character and dude looks like he could still play. WTF I’m thinkin is I don’t want Kobe winnin the MVP(which he deserves) then gettin taken to the cleaners by CP3, like Hakeem did to D Rob.
And i’m not gettin your playin with a superstar theory. Robinson had Elliot(who was an all-star and a stud back in his day) and a young TD(who’s never played like a rookie) so he had his superstars. Who did Ewing have again?

wait dizzle, elliot was a how many time all star? and that was right before he had his kidney replaced and duncan didnt come intot he league for a couple years after that mvp/series so that is not an excuse.
nobody is taking away from hakeem but robinson did more withless that season then hakeem did. (sorta like everyone arguement for kobe, more with less)

just wat ranger said
i said in their primes
comon hakeem was a beast but his team was loaded
ewings team was loaded also
elliot was good but comon after that
david did more with less he took his team to the second round as a rookie
hakeem landed on a good team already
comon tell me that
ellie
cassell
DREXLER
horry
maxwell
smith
jackson
starks
mason
oak tree
smith
penny
nick
scott 3d
grant
werent all better supporting casts than elliot a boderline allstar?
im just sayin there is no way that david isnt the mvp that season

K Dizzle says:
Elliott was a 2 time all-star, once before the kidney issue and once after he got back from Detroit so that isn’t an excuse, it’s a reason. Robinson didn’t win the division by himself. Those Spurs squads were solid. I was replyin to the comment that Shaq, Keem and Ewing played wit a superstar in their prime and that D Rob didn’t. Ewing never played with a legit superstar, Hakeem had great shooters, but nobody I’d call an in-their-prime superstar and only a past-his-prime Glide and shaq played with a young Penny and a young Kobe in the 90’s

clyde was “past his prime”? he was a year older then hakeem. over the hill? as my 5 yr old says “you gottabe kiddin me!” clyde was a TEN TIME allstar including 1996 and 1997 (the 2 yrs after the robinson mvp)
robinson has never played with a single player EVER who has made more then 3 allstars BESIDES duncan and robinson was pretty much at the end of his carreer on the 1999 title team.
robinson was easily a top 3 SCORING center ever. he cut his carreer short because of his honorable commitment to the military. think about what he would have done had he not gone to the his 4 yrs of active naval duty.
he ABSOLUTELY deserved that mvp, and while hakeem had MUCH better numbers he also had a proven championship team (they won the year before)and robinson had some middle of the road guys, some guys like avery who where never drafted, and guys who didnt want to be there because they wanted to be in the spotlight (ie rodman).

actually clyde was born 6 months before hakeem (6/22/62 vs 1/21/63) which put them both right about 31-32 yrs old or right at the end of their prime. sorta like kg/duncan?

I think you guys might have gotten what me and Gee were talkin about way twisted. I said I don’t want Kobe to win the MVP which he deserved(like Robinson won his MVP, which he deserved) and then get put into the torture chamber by the runner up(who would be CP if both of them advance to the western finals much like Hakeem destroyed Robinson in their matchup)
I never once said he didn’t deserve it. re-read post 44

Austin Burton says:
@rangerjohn — Robinson only served 2 years after getting drafted, not four.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
rangerjohn says:
austin,
yes you are correct he served 2 yrs active. i miss typed, he was drafted before his service was over, 2 yrs.
regardless, he came into the league at 24 yrs old (1 yr younger then parker is now and he has what 5 yrs in now?) think what the man could have done had be been brounght in the league at the same average age as players today, 21-22 yrs old. 3 yrs more at his averages would put him about 1000 less points, 700 less blocks and 150 less blocks then hakeem and he still would have played 1 entire less season then hakeem. pretty even if you ask me. this includes a season where he played 6 games.
dizzle,
i understood from the start what you where saying but there is always na ingerant implication that robinson didnt deserve his mvp because of that series with hakeem. spurs fans get a bit offended at the whole thing because robinson had a bad series with no help and so his entire career gets lessened because of it.
