No Surprise: Spurs Force Game 7
photo. adidasWhatever chance the Hornets had of bucking the trend and actually winning a road game evaporated real quick at the beginning of the fourth quarter of last night’s Game 6. With Chris Paul on the bench and New Orleans already down by 15, Manu Ginobili hit back-to-back threes to bring the San Antonio lead to 21, and then Robert Horry got involved when he crushed David West on a back-pick that knocked West out of the game. That pretty much killed the Hornets’ spirit, and soon after that Byron Scott went to his “I’m sick of watching this” lineup — Jannero Pargo, Mike James, Ryan Bowen, Melvin Ely and Julian Wright — for the remainder of the game. Wright usually gets his PT against other team’s backups, but he’s kind of nasty. The kid is gonna be a stud sooner rather than later … So was it a dirty play by Horry? No. As a matter of fact, it was cleaner than the infamous blow he delivered to Steve Nash last year. (Potential name for a rock band: Infamous Blow.) Perhaps a shot to the back isn’t the nicest thing in the world to do to a guy with a back injury, but West stepped onto the court, and therefore he isn’t immune from a totally legal play that happens 50 times in every game. Like Mark Jackson said, if Horry played for the Hornets and had done the same thing to Tim Duncan, no one on that side would think anything bad of it … The Hornets had cut the lead to five in the third quarter, but went through a stretch where they committed four offensive fouls in about two minutes. Two of those came from Chris Paul (21 pts, 6 rebs, 8 asts, 3 stls) pushing off against Bruce Bowen, which if you ask any Spurs fan, he’s been doing the entire series and finally got called for it … Whoever plans the Spurs’ gameday production was this/close to pulling off the coolest player intros ever, but they inexplicably wasted The Undertaker’s theme song on the Hornets, then went with some corny upbeat techno for the Spurs. Can you imagine how sick that would be if San Antonio was introduced to the Undertaker joint while wearing black warmups and acting all cold and robotic? Duncan could even roll his eyes back into his head, and Tony Parker could raise his arms and make the lights come on after being introduced last … Well, at least the Spurs intro video gave us a chance to see DerMarr Johnson wearing a uniform instead of a suit … The Spurs came out of the gate on fire, shooting 71 percent in the first quarter. Duncan (20 pts, 15 rebs, 6 asts) set the tone offensively and defensively, then Manu (25 pts, 6 threes) and the outside shooters carried the weight in the end. One sequence that kind of summed it up: Twice on the same possession West (10 pts) tried to score on Duncan 1-on-1, using every move he’d ever been taught and still not getting any room for a good shot. After that didn’t work, the ball got around to Bonzi Wells, who air-balled a three … David Robinson + Thundersticks = Not cool … At one point Jeff Van Gundy said what most people in America seem to think: that Chris Paul is making Tyson Chandler’s career. That’s such a misconception that needs to be cleared up. Does Chandler get the vast majority of his 8 to 10 points every night via CP setting him up? Definitely, and you can give Paul all the credit in the world for that. But Tyson doesn’t make his money by scoring, he makes it by rebounding and playing D. Chris Paul isn’t helping Chandler grab 10-12 rebounds a night, nor is he playing any part in Chandler’s stellar defense. It’s like saying Isiah Thomas or Michael Jordan made Dennis Rodman, when those two weren’t directly responsible for any of Worm’s mastery on the glass or aggravating defense … So now it’s come down to Game 7, and while ‘08 history says the Hornets have the edge, it’s real risky to bet against San Antonio in this situation. Yesterday on DimeMag.com, our biggest Spurs fan admitted he’d sold the Hornets short and that they’d be the favorite to win a Game 7. The Hornets have dominated every game so far at their place in this series. One more good sign for them is that Peja Stojakovic, at least momentarily, had Bowen figured out and was kind of destroying him. Peja scored 9 points in the first quarter and had 13 by halftime, but was shut out after that … Two Game 6’s on the schedule tonight: Celtics/Cavs and Lakers/Jazz. Apparently a LeBron James team is never desperate, but they’re not exactly doing cartwheels after news broke that Daniel Gibson’s separated shoulder will cause him to miss the next couple of weeks at least … We’re out like Boobie …

Ask Nash & Westicles why they call him Big Shot Rob. He had to have known what he was doing & who he was doing it to. If the Spurs win game 7 & West struggles because of his back, this turns into another clutch play by Horry.
Don’t get between Horry & his rings, I guess. What’s everybody think, was it a cheap-shot? an intentional take down? or was he just playing basketball?

yeh i agree the back pick was some what out of place and horry leaned in but if west is going to get reinjured from something like that then it was only a matter of time. i was wrong about leaving manu on the perimeter, he had like seven from long distance and parker hitting a couple of jumpers didn’t hurt either. i am not worried though cause the hornets stayed with the spurs even with west building houses for katrina victims all game. plus CPs job is not to show up in the 1st half but to get his team going and conserve energy waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger.

that play was clean your right, but not the way it was done!! that’s. btw why spurs got to be hated.

ey damon that’s a normal basketball play, if your teammate try’s too jump by you and he’s being guarde and you stand still and can make it hard for the defender you just go and stand there. Normal basketball play no cheap shot. Let’s just enjoy game 7 aight. Maybe there will be 2 more we’ll know tonight. And the reason why detroit beat orlando in 5 was because they didn’t go into chillmode with chauncy on the court, everybody knows detroit can beat any team in the leauge. But if they don’t feel like going hard like the philly series… they don’t and that’s their achilles. I still don’t know if boston can beat them in 7 games. Tay was definetly the mvp of the orlando series, and the orlando magic players other then dwight howard who stopped giving him the ball, if he don’t get his O he won’t play hard D that’s the thing with most bigs everywhere around the world, no O for me? no D for you.

ok i keep reading “that horry play was dirty” and “didnt look like a normal play to me”,
the only thing that makes that play not normal, DAVID WEST FELL DOWN HOLDING HIS BACK! had it been chris “cheap shot” paul he would have bounced off and run around the screen or horry MIGHT have gotten a moving screen call.
that play is done a million times in the nba, only difference is david west was already hurt and he fell. actaully reminds me of tony parker running into chandler in game 4, where was paul telling him to look out? same thing different place on the floor, but then it was a spur not a hornet that set the pick so i guess that alone makes it dirty?

1) It didn’t matter. The Hornets were out of juice after the 3rd.
2) West had a bad back to begin with so what are the Spurs to do? Go easy on him because of it?
3) The 4 offensive fouls in the third destroyed the Hornets spirit. And they were legit calls. The Spurs showed how experienced they are. The Hornets essentially got punked on those plays.
4) Game 7, Monday night…Will be THE game of the playoffs. Even better than PHX v. SA game 1. Mark my words.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:31 am
cbizzle says:
#15, I agree with you. I’m not sure if Horry’s intent was to hurt David West and put him out of the game, but you can tell he put a li’l something extra into that pick. He leaned in and led with his shoulder and elbow. If you can’t tell that, you are either naive or a Spurs fan. A back pick is legal, but the way Horry did it was a little cheap.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:31 am
NOEngineer says:
Watch Horry’s hands. When West falls down, you can see Horry had two fists balled up and stacked in West’s lower back, which is why it injured when he slammed his body behind the fists. On a clean play, its a forearm up high, or one arm on each side. Sort of like Bowen’s feet accidentally always being under other players when they come down, turning ankles. Everything’s legal if you don’t get caught….
May 16th, 2008 at 8:32 am
KL says:
Not a dirty pick. If I was West, I’d be pissed at Horry’s defender for not calling the pick. As for Horry leaning it, he’s merely bracing for the contact. It’s not like Horry had his arms up. They were down. The pick was clean as can be.

suge and the other guy would both have to spend months and money to get licensed by what ever state athletic commision and that is not going to happen without a lot of “rules” including gloves (my guess is 12-16 oz boxing gloves) and protective equipment and refs and all the works. no “bareknuckles fights” for suge knight.
and once again not a cheap shot! and i love watching “cheap shot” paul getting called on all those push offs he has been getting away with all series long.looks like the refs called it pretty even though, letting them bang in the middle but calling the “cheap shots” from paul and west!

I’d love to see CP vs Mamba in the West Finals but if you let the Spurs get to game 7 you F’d up. In must-win situations the Spurs are monsters.
Julian Wright is a great athlete but needs to work on his shot before he steps into Peja’s role. The Hornets did a nice job though picking him for the future and brining him along behind Peja. I see a lot of Josh Smith in Wright.
@Youngfed
Halfway through the year Beasley was the consensus #1 pick but I think Rose has shown that he could be the next CP3/Wade or Deron and nobody wants to be the next Atlanta and pass that up.
If any team but Minnesota or Memphis win the lottery I think Rose will be the top pick. Because Minnesota and Memphis already have Conley, Crittendon, Lowry/ Foye I think they would go with Beasley because in both cases he helps them make a great yong front court (Beasley + Rudy or Beasley + Jefferson)
Beasley will be better than Durant in his rookie year but Rose could be a Wade/CP3 hybrid (6′4, supreme athlete with great playmaking/leadership)

and then…after orlando stuck by him and supported him, payed for all his rehab and shit, he shouned them and signed with phoenix. and all of a sudden, his ankle is better and he plays 70 games for the suns.

If CP3 jumps to another team, West better follow him even if he can only get a contract worth 65 dollars. Otherwise, like Mike Tyson says….he may just fade into Bolivian.

his numbers suck anyway. ur first 5yrs in the league shouldn’t be enuff to get anybody into the hall.
if i had a vote, HELLS NO!
if he get in, its only because he got chips in college. not for anything he did on the court as a pro
if he gets in, chris webber should get in

Hilarious notion there, sir.
I really hope the refs swallow their whistles for Game 7, each team has had very favorable calls at home. Home Cookin’, right K-Dizzle

@Y’all
Hill’s first few years were as good as any SG not named Jordan. He was the real deal.
That said, he single handedly killed the Orlando Magic for 7 + years and wasted the best years of T-Mac’s career with his injuries. It sucks for him but to me that is Grant Hill’s legacy….massive contract and basically never played for the team.
If you could do it over I’d still take Grant’s 4 years on a rookie contract over Redick any day. And Brand is the best of the bunch…
Boozer might have the most memorable carrer of the bunch after his bitch slap on Cleveland.

another adjustment by Pop to start Oberto over Thomas, who’s been looking very average this series. we barely saw thomas this game.
byron put peja on manu cause morris peterson wasn’t guarding him either. bonzi didn’t do a good job either. peja did a good job on him in game 5 though, so i think byron still likes their chances with that matchup.

“Dennis Rodman was charged with domestic violence for allegedly hitting his girlfriend at a hotel last month.
Los Angeles City Attorney spokesman Nick Velasquez said Rodmanwas charged Wednesday with spousal battery, brandishing a deadly weapon, and one count of dissuading a witness. The charges were misdemeanors.
The 46-year-old was arrested at a hotel April 30 after Gina Peterson called hotel security. Police say she suffered injuries to her arm.

Rodman spokesman Darren Prince says Rodman had had too much to drink when he got into an altercation with Peterson. Prince says the couple are still dating.
“We look forward to a successful resolution of this misdemeanor matter,” said Rodman’s attorney, Paul Meyer.
Attempts to find a phone listing for Peterson were not successful.
Rodman was part of championship teams with the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons.” -det news

“I will say this…..Chris Paul is making David West’s career.”
Whoever said this is a moron. If you actually watch David West, you will realize that most of his points come from isolation plays, meaning it’s one-on-one with CP3 watching from the arch. David West is making his own career. His style is very similar to KG, and his jumper is only going to get wetter. He just needs to work on his post footwork and he will be unstoppable.

show me where the NSAC is going to commision those guys. i have been in the fight game for more then a decade, and i know for a fact that you CANNOT have a legal bare knuckles fight with out 1st being licensed by the athletic commision of what ever state you plan to have it in (and some states will not allow it regardless, like arizona is just starting to work on sanctioning mma fights and NHB no holds bared fights)
neither of them are actual fighters and there is no way the NSAC is going to license SUGE KNIGHT and some schmuck off the street when DANA “THE MAN” WHITE was turned down 3 times before getting his license.

ok young here is the thing with the tyson/kimbo fight it is all about the rules, i go with tyson in a straight up boxing match. kimbo is a street fighter and takes a ton of shots, there has not been a single guy kimbo has faught in any of his videos that hits like tyson, even an over the hill tyson. now if it is a MMA fight in a cage, kimbo every day. tyson had bird legs, and kimbo can easily take him down, once tyson is on his back it takes ALL of his power away. kimbo would put him against the cage, and pound on tyson until tyson was out cold or until the refs stopped it due to utter beat down.
its all about the rules!

not to mention kimbo trained with a friend of mine in corpus christy before his elitexc fight they had there.

ok damn it here you go tiddly winks
“Tiddlywinks is an indoor game played with sets of small discs called “winks” lying on a surface, usually a flat mat. Players use a larger disc called a “squidger” to pop a wink into flight by pressing down on one side of the wink. The objective of the game is to cause the winks to land either on top of opponents’ winks, or ultimately inside a pot or cup.”

Spurs deserve to lose? I won’t even dignify that with justification. At least you admit you are “whack”, sir.
They may lose Game 7 and if so it was another great run, at least they knocked off the Kleenex Suns who were out for blood. That was extreeemely satisfying, not quite as good as the ‘chip but as close as you can get without winning it all.
May 16th, 2008 at 2:56 pm

game 7 is all you can ask, for any team in the L. They came to play and gave it their best, if they win great, and if they lose, that’s just the way the world works for this year. Props to both teams for a very entertaining series.
This is the last year the Spurs can possibly win another one without making serious additions to their roster. Next year, the Lakers are going to kill the L, if they improve defensively.
Spurs in 7.
May 16th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
rangerjohn says:
alex
i agree about the game 7 and win lose all that
remember, the spurs are dropping all the old legs off except barry and bowen, all the rest of the old legs are done. spurs also have like 17 million under the tax to spend on free agents for next season. my guess is the spurs will be around for a few more years.
May 16th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
for real says:
Spurs should keep Udoka, Duncan, Bowen, Parker and Ginobili – that’s it. We’re getting Tiago Splitter next year; he’s like Pau Gasol, but actually plays defense.
Spurs are going to be TIGHT next year. Bynum can kiss it
May 16th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
alex says:
@ranger – yes, i must say they did one hell of a job winning championships without spending some serious $.
The core is still good. But they can’t win anymore if they have to depend on people like finley to make shots. The defense is there, but they need another offensive big and a shooter to come off the bench.
I’m hoping they do make valuable additions to this roster for next year. TD is still all NBA material for 3-4 years.
Same thing for Utah – Sloan has made that team as good as it can get. Very little room for improvement there.

Youngfed, post 99 is a Tyson quote. Remember when he and Lennox Lewis got into it at the pre-fight press conference and then Tyson lost his mind and started yelling at a reporter, challenging him to fight? He rattled off a string of swears and insults that would’ve been great on its own, then he capped it off with a classic line of, “I’ll f&ck you til you love me f*ggot!” It was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

@ for real,
the spurs have udoka, bowen, TD,TP, manu, mahinmi, splitter, and barry next year, and they will still have like 15 mil left over to play with.
@alex
i think ian and splitter will fill the “big man” need fairly well. i could see them picking up kurt again but for real cheap. would not hurt my feelings to have kurt thomas for the vet minimum next year. barry is just not 100% playing shape right now but danm the man can still shoot
