If Your Team Wins the Lottery, Who Do You Want?

(Rose photo by Joe Wigdahl; Beasley photo by Chad Griffith)

We’re just a few hours away from the NBA Draft Lottery. If you’re a fan of one of the teams involved and your squad lands the #1 pick, who do you want? Assess your team’s needs and pick between Michael Beasley, Derrick Rose, Eric Gordon, Jerryd Bayless, Kevin Love, O.J. Mayo, Danilo Gallinari, Brook Lopez and the rest…

I live in Wisconsin so if I’m the Bucks it’s Rose all the way. Mo Williams is a bum!

  2. Damon says:

for the pacers(is it really only 3 years since they were contenders for YEARS?)I would take rose, even though it would be unfair to Jamaal Tinsley who gives everything for 82 games every season…
Beasly is great and I don’t know about JO’s future, but i really want a focused point

  3. Junio says:

    Heat – Rose
    Sonics – Beasley
    Grizz – Beasley
    Knicks – Rose
    Cats – Beasley
    Nets – Beasley
    Portland – Beasley
    Warriors – Beasley
    Kings – Rose
    Clippers – Rose
    Wolves – Rose
    Indiana – Rose
    Chicago – Rose
    Bucks – Rose

  4. DaPro says:

    @ Damon

Tinsley who gives everything for 82 games every season…

R U serious fam???? Say it ain’t so Vally

I’d go with Rose. He has the tools to be a game changing point 4 years 2 come

  5. Scott says:

The only one of Junio’s selections that I don’t agree with is the Chicago going for Rose, they GOTTA go for Beasley, they’ve needed a low-post scorer for years!

  6. Damon says:

    @ DaPro
c’mon man, i thought it would be pretty clear since everybody knows his history
he will probably miss next season because he gets injured while sleeping…

  7. Scott says:

Oh, and regardless of team, I’d go for Beasley, only cuz his pose in the pics above is ALOT cooler than Rose. Derrick needs to work on his pose game.

  8. DaPro says:

Scott we do need a low post threat but Rose is a hometown kid

We have a potential low post scorer in Gray. He might be good for 10+ points

I’d go Rose unless I had a top tier point guard already on the squad

  9. B says:

I think the Sonics would take Rose and finally put an end to the failed Ridnour/Watson 2 headed pg experiment.

  10. Damon says:

I think portland just needs a point guard for their complete young and talented starting five. they got oden and aldridge on beasley up front

  11. Damon says:

meant: oden and aldridge up front

  12. Junio says:

    Fair enough Scott…

IMO, the Hinrich-Gordon-Duhon trio will not work quarterbacking the Bulls…..I thought in Noah-Tyrus-Deng on the front and Rose on the backcourt with Ben or Kirk…

  13. DaPro says:

Aight Dame you scared a brotha

Some catz on Dime never seen a ball game just blog. My bad brotha!!

  14. Scott says:

The interesting thing is that if this had of been before last season there’d be no thought given to the Bulls selecting Rose, as thats how high people were on Hinrich.

But they have Hinrich locked in contract wise.

Gordon and Deng are the risks to leave, those two guys are their only REAL means of scoring, so I suppose thats why I would select Beasley regardless, as he looks like a pure scorer of a big, so if Gordon or Deng or both are wearing different uniforms next season, you don’t miss a whole lot in the scoring dept.

The Bulls will be interesting in the offseason to watch, whichever direction they go, which could be Rose if given the option, personally I just don’t see him fitting as well as Beasley.

  15. DaPro says:

    Scott

The Bulls don’t get easy baskets. There a jump shoot oriented team

Beasley would no doubt take on the scoring but Rose gets everyone easy buckets with his ability to get to the rim

    Can’t go wrong either way

  16. Damon says:

no problem man, had to make fun of a guy who has so much talent and is disappointing as hell.
btw, you’re right, heard guys say STAT has a better postgame thane duncan and stuff like that.

  17. GEE...My knee bone's connected to my hardy-har-har-har says:

    Beasley for everyone hands down.

  18. Junio says:

Agree with DaPro…with Rose they could try to play near the basket, penetrating and creating oportunities to high-% shots….Beasley can bang inside and has range too…

Scott, true that they committed financially to Kirk, but with Gordon possibly leaving, the team would be solid with Rose-Kirk-Deng-Tyrus-Noah, with Thabo, Gray off the bench… would be a veeeery young nucleous, but could be playoff-bound right away in the East…. in 3 years, could be the heir to Celts and Pistons….what do you think?

  19. Junio says:

closing the idea in first paragraph, I see Beasley more as a finisher, not a facilitator on the offense.

  20. ERIC says:

    Everyone knows the first 2.

I think the interesting question is: WHO would your team take if you got #3 in the draft. That is where it gets INTERESTING………

If i were NY I’d take OJ “money-bags” Mayo.

  21. Junio says:

    Heat – Brook
    Sonics – Mayo
    Grizz – Brook
    Knicks – Brook
    Cats – Brook
    Nets – Brook
    Portland – Bayless
    Warriors – Mayo
    Kings – Mayo
    Clippers – Mayo
    Wolves – Brook
    Indiana – Bayless
    Chicago – Bayless
    Bucks – Bayless

  22. Junio says:

NY already has Nate, Crawford, Marbury OJ-like players…

  23. Kobeef says:

    1. Miami Heat (250) – Rose – because they are signing Brand in the offseason

    2. Seattle Supersonics (199) – Beasley – Earl Watson is a decent PG and Beasley and Durant make an awesome young frontcourt.

    3. Minnesota Timberwolves (138) – Beasley – they are sticking with Foye/Telfair at point.

    4. Memphis Grizzlies (137) – This is one team that almost hopes they don’t win. Fans would kill them if they skip on Rose but Beasley is the better fit.

    5. New York Knicks (76) – Probably the only team in the top 5 that 100% is committed to Rose if they win.

    6. LA Clippers (75) – Rose…or maybe Beasley because they know Brand is walking.

    7. Milwaukee Bucks (43) – Rose.

    8. Charlotte Bobcats (28) – Beasley and they use Emeka as a Centre. Felton is just OK but they’ll run with him.

    9. Chicago Bulls (17) – Beasley – Heinrich is their man at point.

    10. New Jersey Nets (11) – Beasley – they are just like NY in that they are 100% Beasley if they win.

    11. Indiana Pacers (8) – Rose…Seee-ya Jamal.

    12. Sacramento Kings (7) – Tough call. They don’t have a starter at either spot.

    13. Portland Trail Blazers (6)….damn…if they win again I’m gonna lose it.

    14. Golden State Warriors (5) – Beasley. 100%. Get those weak-ass forwwards out of there.

    Third Pick?

Assuming Minnesota gets the third pick I’d take either DeAndre Jordan or Brook Lopez to give Al some support in the frontcourt.

O.J. = second coming of Larry Hughes
Bayless = not a floor general – an undersized shooting guard

  24. PALakerFan says:

I watched Gray for years at Pitt. He’s a slug. If Bulls fans are expecting anything out of him, your fucked.

Beasley all the way. Package Hinrich and Tyrus together in a trade for a tablesetting PG or tough 7′ who can rebound and play defense.

    Mayo is way-overrated.

  25. DaPro says:

    PALakerFan

In the action that Gray has seen he produced. I know he isn’t a 20/10 guy but the Bulls don’t need that. With Rose as PG Gray could easily get 10 points

  26. Celts Fan says:

Junio, to me, Jerryd Bayless HAS TO BE the 3rd pick (unless that team needs a big guy and wastes their pick on this year’s terrible big guy from Stanford with an equally terrible twin or DeAndre “I’ll be good in a few years once I get to my 2nd team” Jordan.) I think OJ Mayo will be a solid pro, but Bayless seems like a more athletic Gil with some D mixed in.

  27. Celts Fan says:

Hell ya DaPro. Don’t forget, Gray was supposed to be a lottery pick had he come out a year earlier. He’s a legit 7′0″, 280, with some nice moves. He’s definitely not a 20/10 guy, but he can definitely do work off the bench.

  28. Brown says:

It depends on what the team thinks might happen in free agency. I’m a Warriors fan, so I’m hoping Baron Davis stays with the team (is he really thinking of leaving $17 mill on the table? I think not). Provided he stays, they would take Beasley no doubt, but the chances of landing a top pick are pretty slim. I’d be happy to move up a few spots to take Darrell Arthur.

  29. Celts Fan says:

That really depends Brown. If Baron thinks he could get the best possible deal now (and after playing all 82 games, he probably does) it’s smarter to forgo the 1 year of $17M to reup for 5 at about $15M per and ensure the extra $55-$60M over the next few years instead of running the risk of getting injured next year and seeing that figure drop. I think he’s as good as gone (from that deal anyway, he could definitely still resign with GS.)

  30. Jimbo says:

this junio joker really has no clue.

the trailblazers would take rose, no doubt. then bayless, then westbrook. Anybody else they might pick is just trade bait, including beasley.

  31. Jimbo says:

    fear the dynasty.

  32. GEE...My knee bone's connected to my hardy-har-har-har says:

Top teams still might be garbage regradless of who they pick lol.

Still Beasley is the safe bet to me.

  33. Junio says:

    Celts fan…

I’m really not sold on Bayless….I think his ceiling is ‘2004 Devin Harris….without the eventual development in defense. But he could be as good as Harris today.

Mayo became overrated beacuse he was always #1 of his class…and he stood happy with that….his ceiling? I can’t see a better comparision than Wade.

Brook…some teams will keep the “you can’t go wrong if you go big in the draft” theory….his ceiling? A scoring big…the good side of Eddy Curry…

  34. Tom G says:

id take O.J. Mayo. you get some OJ and some Mayo.
    i know, bad joke.

  35. Junio says:

Jimbo, I see Beasley as the Blazers SF, with Aldridge and Oden on the frontcourt. Even if I think they like Jack, Rose would be a good upgrade over their incumbent starting PG….

Checking the lineups, I’d rather see Jack-Roy-Beasley-Aldridge-Oden than Rose and Webster or Outlaw on the wing.

    It’s just my opinion…

  36. JoeGym says:

Someone on ESPN just said DJ Augustin is Rose’s equal. Wow. I saw Memphis 3 times in person (UH, Rice, Texas) and its not even close.

That said the Rox need a 1 and a 4 but they have no shot.

  37. Celts Fan says:

fair enough junio, I just see more out of Bayless and less out of Brook (he looked like he sort of struggled getting a shot up at the college level. seems like the next Curtis Borchardt)

OJ Mayo’s ceiling, to me, can’t be DWade (he’s not nearly as athletic and doesn’t seem as gritty) I’d say his ceiling is much more like Steph (the better years of him, though if he busts, it could be these past few years of Steph) but I see him ending up more like a Jamal Crawford – solid player, but not lighting the world on fire.

  38. johnsacrimoni says:

    @ Junio-
No way the Kings would take Mayo 3rd, they have Kevin Martin entrenched at the 2. Bayless for sure. Also, Mayo doesn’t play at all like Wade.

  39. Jules says:

as a bulls fan, id want Rose, bc the new rules tend to favor PGs who can get into the lane. Hinrich is not the man at point for this team.

  40. Kudabeen says:

No ones talking about Joe Alexander?

1 and 2 will be Rose and Beasley, but picks 3-5 how can you let Alexander slip by. I have to download more of his college games. Every time I see him he shows more pieces to his game. Great leaper, with power. Good finisher. Surprisingly good defender. decent passer. 6-10 and has the frame to get bigger. He looks as athletic as Dwight at times.

    Just saying…

  41. daddycane says:

What about Brook Lopez? Is there no room for a big slow center anymore?

Maybe coupling Wade with a utility center to get boards and a few dunks will be enough.

the hoop doctors website this morning had some info on brook lopez possibly movin’ up…

I still say Miami should go with Rose at one and have a PG for the future.

  42. Celts Fan says:

good call Kudabeen, though Joe’s probably looking more at the 10-15 range, but he could definitely be one of those guys that, a few years down the road, you wonder how he dropped all the way to 12.

Brook Lopez SCREAMS bust potential to me. Just something about unathletic white centers who struggle to get their shot up conjers up images of Curtis Borchardt and Bryant Reeves and throwbacks like Tom Kite. At least his goon brother Sideshow Robin looks like he can play some D…

  43. Nimit says:

    @ Junio

Sonics would select Rose anyday!!!…they’ve already got Kevin Durant as their their No.1 Scorer. Putting Beasly on the same team just doesnt make sense. They’re just be an iso team with no one who can get KH or Beasly the ball where they want it. And anyway, its easier to get a scorer through trades/free agency than to get a PG for the future.
I think ANY team would select Rose first. Beasly is good, but Rose is a potentail superstar PG.

    or put it this way…

Superstar PGs : Paul, Williams, Nash, Parker(maybe)

Superstar Scorers : about 15 of them

  44. ERIC says:

    “SIDESHOW ROB”
    ha

  45. Junio says:

    @ Nimit

Couldn’t agree more, but I think in the Sonics roster the improvement with Beasley is greater than with Rose…

And there is the KD’s ‘childhood friend factor’….if both are available…if they’d go with Beasley…

  46. Celts Fan says:

ya Junio, plus, they don’t have any semblance of a post-up game (Chris Wilcox showing up 1 out of 4 games doesn’t count.) You need a guy you can dump it into to get easy buckets (look at the Bulls to see what happens when you don’t have someone like that.)

  47. Jeffrey says:

Houston’s my team. I don’t think they have the balls to pull off a trade to land in the top 5 and get t-mac some help

  48. JDizzle says:

Beasley is a stud. I can’t think of any team who wouldn’t want him. The Warriors would LOVE him.

  49. Eric says:

Rose looks like the next great point guard. I hope a western team get him, or the Cavs somehow trade their whole team minus Lebron for him. Good point play makes you a contenda as you see with CP3

  50. Joseph says:

Heat – Rose – That’s a dominant backcourt with Rose and Wade. Rose can handle all of the passing and defensive duties and take pressure of Wade, while Wade can focus more on scoring.

Sonics – Rose – The Sonics already have pretty good scorers in Durant and Green, they just need a guy to get them the ball. Watson and Ridnour are okay, but Rose is a potential superstar, and is perfect for their run-and-gun style.

T-Wolves – Beasley – The T-Wolves already invested a 1st round pick on a point guard in Randy Foye. While he has been a bit of a disappointment, I think it is too soon to give up on him. Plus, the T-Wolves don’t have much else inside besides Al Jefferson.

Grizzlies – Beasley- I know Rose is the hometown favorite but the Grizz have absolutely nothing inside. I think they go for Beasley and change that right away. If they do somehow get stuck with Rose, I think that they should package one of their point guards, Mike Miller and maybe Hak to try and get ‘Melo.

Knicks – Rose – No explanation needed.

Clippers – Rose – I think the Clippers actually have a chance at being pretty good next year if they can keep Brand and Maggette. Their biggest question mark is at point guard with Shaun Livingston coming back from a serious injury and the only other options at the point are Brevin Knight, Dan Dickau and Smush. I think they go for Rose and make a surprise run into the playoffs.

Bucks – Rose – I can see them going either way, but they have 2 pretty good players at the 4 in Villanueva and Yi, and I’m not sold on Mo Williams as a franchise PG.

Bobcats – Beasley – Although Ray Felton isn’t a star, I think that he can be pretty good with a good team around him, and that’s exactly what they’ll have if they draft Beasley. The Bobcats didn’t have very much low-post scoring last year but I think that Beasley will change all of that.

Bulls – Beasley – The Bulls have been searching for a low-post scorer for years. This is their chance to get one, and although Rose is from Chicago, I don’t think they pass on Beasley.

Nets – Beasley – The Nets are absolutely loaded on the perimeter but have no scoring inside. Boone and Williams are defensive players and Krstic is strictly a mid-range jump shooter. Beasley will give them a low post-threat and the option to run with his athleticism and three-point shooting ability.

Pacers – Rose – Like someone earlier put it, “See ya later, Jamal”

Kings – Beasley – I can see the Kings going with either, but I think they are more sold on Udrih, who played well down the stretch, than they are on Mikki Moore.

Blazers – Rose – I think that Beasley would ruin the chemistry on the Blazers and that the Blazers won’t take a chance on that happening. The Blazers biggest weakness is probably their point guard position where they have Steve Blake, who is best suited for a backup role, and Jarrett Jack, who is a 2 guard in a point guard’s body.

Warriors – Beasley – Beasley is a perfect fit for the Warriors and can provide some more rebounding for them, which they sorely lacked last season.
