Pistons Take Game 2 on the Road

IMAGE DESCRIPTIONChauncey Billups (photo. adidas)

Ever since Joe Johnson and Josh Smith first started busting their asses in Atlanta and carrying through LeBron doing damage in Cleveland, hasn’t every Celtics fan you know asked the same question with a nervous laugh: “Has any team won a championship without winning a road game?” Um, no. And the ’08 Celtics won’t be that team, either. Last night the Pistons handed Boston its first home loss of the postseason, tying the series at one game apiece and forcing the C’s into a spot where they’ll have to win a game at the Palace if they want to advance … Rip Hamilton dropped 25 points while running through his usual wall of screens and getting to the line, and Chauncey Billups (19 pts, 7 asts) also got some crucial buckets on similar plays despite tweaking his hamstring in the first half. As good as the Celtics defense was all season, there have been times in the playoffs when they’ve been getting lit up by the other team’s perimeter players. And who said Rip can’t create his own shot? One of the game’s biggest buckets down the stretch was Rip taking Kevin Garnett to the rack 1-on-1 and sticking a floater … With so many teams running the “Give it to our highest-paid player” clear-out play when things get tight, it’s nice to watch a team like Detroit for a change. Sometimes they get too reliant on isolating Chauncey and letting him go, but last night they were executing their stuff relentlessly. Six of the Pistons’ last eight buckets were assisted … Rodney Stuckey was good, hitting some key shots in the fourth quarter and finishing with 13 points, but that doesn’t mean the announcers should have been comparing him to Dwyane Wade. Thankfully Jeff Van Gundy had the sense to point out how ridiculous that was … So much was made about Ray Allen‘s shooting woes before the game — Michelle Tafoya even interviewed him a few minutes before tip-off and was basically like, “What’s wrong with you?” — but he finally broke out with a 25-point effort and was money in the second half. Ray did come up short on some big shots in the fourth, though, getting blocked on a three and missing a floater from close range. But the fact that he was even in the game and trusted/confident enough to take those shots is a big leap from what we’ve been seeing out of him lately … And how bad must Sam Cassell be shooting (in practice) right now that he still can’t get on the floor? You gotta wonder how that’s sitting with him, and if Doc Rivers is trying to pacify Sam with some “We’re saving you for the Finals” line. On the Flip side, Lindsey Hunter and Theo Ratliff are getting minutes and making big plays for Detroit when they’re called upon … There was a play with about five minutes left when KG caught the ball in the lane and it looked like he was gonna unleash a filthy dunk on Rasheed Wallace‘s head. Garnett’s arms weren’t that long, though, and he settled for a mere tough bucket. It got us thinking: What was the craziest dunk of the Big Ticket’s career? Here’s one candidate: Have some, Nene … How funny was Paul Pierce (22 pts) and Tony Allen‘s “shooting dice/picking up the money” act during Pierce’s pre-game intro? Somehow we don’t think we’ll ever see Pau Gasol and Vlad Radmanovic breaking that one out in L.A. tonight … Ten seconds left in a close game, and Rasheed (13 pts, 10 rebs) was singing “Paradise City” as it played on the speakers. He’s just a different cat. Of course if Detroit had been losing, it’d be a huge story right now … One of the Dime crew’s Celtics faithful believes that Van Gundy hates on and second-guesses Doc Rivers more than any announcer has ever done to any coach. (Although JVG did compliment Doc one time in the second half.) Do you agree with that accusation? … Dime #41 just hit newsstands this week with our special “Best Season Ever” cover. What stood out most about this season for you? Do you agree that it’s been the best ever? Tell us HERE … Did you see where O.J. Mayo is no longer being represented by Bill Duffy’s agency? Guess the drama wasn’t worth it for them. Ultimately it’s not that big of a deal; O.J.’s still gonna be a Lottery pick and make his money, and BDA still has cake coming in from clients Steve Nash, Yao Ming, and Greg Oden among others … Speaking of Lottery picks, there’s a rumor that the Blazers would consider trading LaMarcus Aldridge to Chicago for a shot at Derrick Rose. Bad move if you ask us; Jarrett Jack and Steve Blake are serviceable enough running the point in Portland that they shouldn’t break up the Aldridge/Oden combo before they even get a chance to play together. Even if they’re not exactly Duncan/Robinson or Hakeem/Sampson, they could be pretty freakin’ good as a front line duo … We’re out like championship contenders who can’t win on the road.

Nice Clip – Get some NENE!

  4. D.J. says:

Pistons win big in game 3!

  5. slicrick says:

seriously, tho, i think has had some sicker dunks than the one on Nene, loook up some early KG clips

  6. Smitty313 says:

Spurs will not win tonight, they had their chance the other day. Boston is done, I dont see them taking one in Detroit. L.A/Detroit finals.

  7. the_don_mega says:

i wonder what awful things kobe would do to the spurs tonight??? ” a KG team is never desperate… ” LOL!!!

  8. M.Balla says:

Rose for Aldridge? That’s a no brainer… for Portland! Behind a dominant big man (Oden may be one, but LaSoftie Aldridge is not) the most important thing is a dominant PG.

  9. YOUNGFED says:

  10. Chuck...Haters come in all fashions and forms so bear arms says:

    @YoungFed
Fed you out yo mind man, this is going the full 7 for both series, especially if that boy ray allen starts finding his shot like last night!

  11. marcus the great says:

wtf is federline talkin bout? i’m so glad we’re in the playoffs right now but it made me think…. basketball season is almost over (sniffle)

  12. marcus the great says:

hopefully we (i) don’t have to listen to reggie miller broadcast games anymore since its conf finals time

  13. barnabusb says:

KG’s best dunk was probably that messed up alley-oop against Houston, where Marbury (I think) lofted the floater from the baseline over the rim, and Garnett caught it at almost his knees, brought it back up, and stuffed it. It wasn’t on anyone, but it was some impressive athleticism.

And as for JVG hating on Doc, keep it coming. It ALMOST balances out the completely biased coverage/promos/highlights/replays in Boston’s favor. But not quite.

  14. Austin Burton says:

I’ve never been able to find a clip, but KG had this dunk against (I’m pretty sure) Tom Hammonds of the Nuggets back in maybe his 2nd or 3rd year. It was your basic catch on the block one-hander, but he took a full-body check from Hammonds and basically ate the man’s soul. I remember seeing it as a kid and jumping off the couch in shock.

  15. chance says:

Spurs have a chance to win as long as Joey Crawford isnt anywhere near LA tonight

  16. PALakerFan says:

The Celts now have a chance to win one on the road since Ray finally got going.

  17. Celts Fan says:

Great game last night. Stuckey was really good (no surprise there) and thank God Ray finally broke out of that slump. No surprise Detroit took one in Boston. Now let’s see if we really are a title contender. Everyone knew we’d have to win SOMETIME on the road. That time is now or we’re about to be fishing (and we wouldn’t deserve to get there if we can’t win on the road anyway, so let’s see how these guys react now that all of their first REAL chance at a title is in doubt against a team that’s every bit as good as they are.)

Not only was Rasheed singing Paradise City late in the game, but pregame, the Garden always blasts “Welcome to the Jungle” and Rasheed was out at center court, rocking out, playing air guitar as everyone else was doing their pregame pounds. Only ‘Sheed…

Dime, it’s Paul Pierce and Eddie House, not TA that do the pregame dice roll, Tony would end up turning them over.

  18. DO says:

The big 3 all had good games, shot a high percentage, and the Celtics still lost. It doesn’t look good for Boston.

  19. djKianoosh says:

god i hope both series go 7.

  20. Austin Burton says:

Tony Allen would play the Rodney “Quills” Dinkins role and rob the dice game.

  21. YOUNFED says:

    @Marcus the Fake
    Shut the fuk up.
“let my name taste like azz when you speak it” -Biggy smallz.

  22. shhhhhooops says:

JVG hating on Doc? That’s just ridiculous. Jeff (who I will always love for grabbing Zo’s leg.. now THAT’s a coach!) gives love to everyone in the NBA. He wouldn’t stop gushing at how great it was that Doc kept Ray in the game when he got his fourth foul… which led to Ray picking up his 5th ten seconds later. JVG even complements the Refs when they make a “great call.” Why is he complimenting them? It’s their JOB to make the right call!

And the member of the DIme Crew who’s a big Boston fan, how can you honestly defend Doc in any way? Is there any doubt that he is the worst coach out of the 16 who went into the playoffs (bedsides maybe poop-faced George Karl)? The man had 66 wins in the regular season then completely shakes up his entire rotation every game which led to them going 7 against the Hawks!!! The haven’t won on the road and I doubt they will next game.

Finally, one question… Does anyone work harder away from the ball that Rip Hamilton. That man just runs circles all damn game. I get dizzy and tired just watching him hit screen after screen after screen until he’s got a nice open jumper.

  23. Remy Nguyen says:

    The return of Jesus Shuttlesworth.

  24. Dennis Castro says:

Um, has Doc Rivers done anything to not warrant criticism? I’ve said it before, he’s going to cost them a title, with his substitution patterns, his PT allotment for the 3, etc.

Could you imagine this Detroit team with a coach that can actually motivate them? They’d have dominated the east for the past few years and won more than one title.

If I’m Portland, I do that deal no questions asked. Rose is going to be a top 5 PG in the league several years down, maybe top 3. Aldridge is good, but Rose is going to be a star. And you really need a good PG if you’re going to contend.

  25. YOUNGFED says:

    @Chuck
Sorry bro but this ain’t going 7, plus Ray, Pierce, and KG had good nights and got the Big L boogie and Sheed still ain’t balled out yet. So with that said it’s a wrap son.

  26. alex says:

Sam Casell does not see any playing time because Billups or Stuckey will just abuse him on offense, or Hunter will pressure him to turn the ball over in every possession in defense. I am Sam – and I am Old.

Boston should really learn to run some offensive sets

  27. Mike says:

“Stuckey was good, hitting some key shots in the fourth quarter and finishing with 13 points, but that doesn’t mean the announcers should have been comparing him to Dwyane Wade. Thankfully Jeff Van Gundy had the sense to point out how ridiculous that was …”

Stuckey and D-Wade are on about the same level right now (factoring Wade’s series of injuries). If Wade ever makes it back to his old form, he is far better than Stuckey. Also, Wade gets all the crazy calls, so I guess that makes him a little better.

  28. Jules says:

“… Speaking of Lottery picks, there’s a rumor that the Blazers would consider trading LaMarcus Aldridge to Chicago for a shot at Derrick Rose. Bad move if you ask us; ”

yeah…FOR CHICAGO. They’d have to be smokin some sherm to think that’s a good idea.

  29. shhhhhooops says:

How would you rate each coach who entered the playoffs?

Rank them however you like… either 1-16 or at various levels… Some coaches are harder to rank than others due to their limited cast of players or lack of experience… Here is how I would rank them, even though some coaches such as Stan Van Gunddy or Mike Woodson are hard to figure out. I don’t think my list is perfect, but it’s a start point for discussion:

    1. Pop / Phil Jackson
    2. Sloan / Byron Scott
    3. Mike D’Antoni / Stan Van Gundy
    4. Flip / Rick Adleman
    5. Mo Cheeks / Eddie Jordan / Avery Johnson
    6. Mike Woodson
    7. Sam Mitchell
    8. Doc / George Karl / Mike Brown

  30. isotope says:

does the Boston/Pistons series remind anyone else of the Pistons/Lakers championship series few years back?

I wouldnt be totally shocked if Detroit loses 1 at home. I’m not sure if home court affects the pistons. They just play at whatever level they want to play regardless of where they are playing. If they go to sleep in the palace, then the Celts could steal one.

  31. chris says:

fine game last night…seeing all those old men make about 10 shots in a row in the 4th quarter made me all warm inside, not to mention the 88% free throw shooting by both teams. celtics really need a point guard, don’t they? rajon was acting about 15 and pimply, and eddie house isn’t fast enough to get within 15 feet of the rim. now that ray’s got his shot back, i hope doc lets him play the point a bit, make it a series. celtsfan and youngfed got it right, and the whole thing just got a lot more interesting.

  32. HKP says:

    Hey Dime Mag,

Pierce has been doing the dice throwing routine for a good part of this season at least. You guys are mentioning it like it’s a recent development.

Boston’s half-court offense is ugly, and it’s mainly the PG’s. Rondo looks lost and/or indifferent in the half-court, and it makes the whole team sloppy. He puts teammates in bad spots with his passes way more than a starting PG should. House isn’t even a true point guard, but he does a better job facilitating in the half-court. His handle’s not good enough, and it’s obvious that he gets flustered by tough on-the-ball defense (a la lindsey hunter) Sam is much better at directing an offense. I bet he would handle pressure defense fine, but like people have said, he’s a liability when he has to guard someone (also a liability when he’s straight chuckin’ and missing).

Rondo (the whole team really) needs to start running crisper half-court offense for the celtics to win. Playing Pierce as a point-forward, which they’ve been doing a fair amount of, won’t work long-term because the other players start to stagnate.

  33. DaPro says:

    LMAO @ Celts Fan

I could see TA loose the dice

    ECF is still going 7

Boston will need some type of production of the bench though
They need to break Cassell out for a lest a small stretch
Rondo needs to pull the trigger cause Van Gundy called it, the Pistons sagged off him to double PP and Rondo has to make them pay for leaving him

  34. SPURS IN SIX says:

…and I think it goes back to Boston tied at 2-2

  35. girlybballluver says:

Manu has become a turn over machine…as good as he can be at times, sometimes I really wish Pop would yank him out of the game (like after he air balls a 3) and put in Brent. Udoka must have gotten the green light from Pop after that Hornets series, but Pop needs to change that light to yellow…he bricked far too many shots last game. Duncan had a good game one, but no one else did. It’s time to step it up. Tonight is a must win!!

I hate that shaking of the head “man I’m good” thing Kobe does after hitting a tough shot. It’s so cute/funny/and annoying at the same time.

  36. MoxWestCoastRep says:

    My prediction:
Spurs get a good night sleep and still get handled.

  37. yallallreadyknow says:

    damn. another spurs game tonight?
    these playoffs suck
boring ass spurs still in it? tnt is haing the ratings. bah. ugh.

  38. Lady Luck says:

Boston is in trouble. Rondo looks rattled…you won’t win with House. They need to give Cassell some minutes but don’t be afraid to yank him if he starts gunning. KG, P-squared, Posey, and even Uncle Ray-Ray played well, but they still never could get a decent rhythm going. If Sheed and Billups get it going, it will be a wrap for Boston.

Even if Boston makes it to the finals, they won’t win it all. They don’t have enough to be my Lake show (or the Spurs) in a 7 game series. Boston fans should be concerned.

  39. DaPro says:

I’d still break out a smaller lineup if I’m Boston

I’ve been saying this from the start
Since Mcdyess doesn’t post you won’t have to double which leave you with your best offensive team to space the floor and force the Pistons to stay honest on all defenders

  40. Celts Fan says:

Just want to throw this out there, cuz I laugh EVERY time I see it. Rasheed’s shoulder tat of the sun, with the bottom of it turning into arrows raining down on the Mayans is absolutely phenomenal.

  41. Soopa says:

Im rooting for the celtics, but when I see Mcdyess play i cant help thinking of the player he used to be. One of my favorit players growing up.

    A bunch of highlight:

  42. Jeffrey says:

This series ain’t going seven. If Detroit has a pulse, they would go rambo mode and handle that

  43. Celts Fan says:

Speaking of tattoos, here’s a really screwed up one that Marquis Daniels has. Ironically, it’s exactly what I’d do if my team got Marquis Daniels…

  44. djKianoosh says:

    boring spurs?

i thought the game last night was kinda boring until the last 5 minutes. the spurs/lakers game was very entertaining even though there was a 20 point lead at one point.

not sure what ya’ll are watching or expecting.

  45. yallallreadyknow says:

expecting some excitement. which is what the spurs dont generate. popo-bitch is the worst interview in coaching history—damn you gotta hate him. ugh!

no game featuring kg and rasheed going head to head with ray allen and rip hamilton going head to head and scoring 25pts apiece on each other can be considered boring. what the hell were you watching?

  46. Austin Burton says:

@yall — So it’s your opinion that last night’s Celtics/Pistons game was more entertaining than Game 1 of Lakers/Spurs?

  47. girlybballluver says:

Detroit is the most boring team in the league…not the spurs.
I agree with post # 44…what the heck are ya’ll watching?

  48. DaPro says:

I like watching Detriot and San An ball especially when they are executing plays to a T

I don’t like to watch teams that go 1on1 in every play or turn the ball over on every possesion

Denver looks good until they play a disciplined team like the Spurs,Pistons, Lakers, etc and then they got sloppy

Too me that’s boring basketball-turnovers, bad shots, stupid passes

  49. marcus the great says:

    in yo face!!!

  50. Austin Burton says:

While we’re on the topic, can anyone tell me what about Manu and Parker’s games AREN’T exciting? They’re both fast, they get up and down the court, they dribble behind the back, between the legs (Manu goes between the defender’s legs too), spin moves, etc. Manu will dunk on people. Parker and Manu make flashy passes sometimes. I don’t get why people keep saying they’re boring.

  51. girlybballluver says:

I don’t get it either AB. I guess since everyone think’s TD Mr. boring, they think everyone associated with him is too.

I’m starting to believe that most people that say the spurs are boring, don’t really watch them play. They’re just echoing the opinions they hear from all the spurs haters there are in the world of ball.

  52. YOUNGFED says:

    @Austin
Manu is exciting but doesn’t really have that above them game or attitude same for parker. Plus it’s like watching an overseas allstar team when watching the Spurs. lol Half the team are foriegners with foriegns traits.

    Nuff Said Pimpin’

  53. YOUNGFED says:

thats above the rim game, sorry peeps. typo

  54. YOUNGFED says:

Also can you please explain how Parker been here for like 8yrs. and still got that funny accent. Geesh…

  55. Celts Fan says:

cuz he’s french youngfed. You could live with just girls forever, but you’d still talk like a guy.

Manu has a million little moves and Tony Parker’s one of the best finishers in the league. You can hate them (for flopping, bitching, winning) but they aren’t boring, they just play a slower style.

  56. YOUNGFED says:

Never said they where boring Celts the just don’t bring the type of game that today’s society craves, such as trash talking, fighting, taking the opposing player personally. like when CP3 meets Deron or When Lebron meets Melo/Kobe or Sheed/KG. I saw the BadBoys play and them boys damn near killed the bulls literally but Jordan wouldn’t lay down. Thats what today’s game needs. Holla

  57. cbizzle says:

I don’t follow the Celts, what is this ubuntu stuff people keep talking about?

  58. PALakerFan says:

I disagree YOUNGFED. The Pistons of the 80′s and Jordan almost killed the game. The Pistons caused all teams to go into mega-defense/thug mode and Jordan taught every young kid to overdribble and be a gunner. Today’s game is more fluid and exciting than ever. And as much as I want my Lakers to kill them, the Spurs are a great team. They play ball the right way and with a ton of skill. They may not talk trash but you know Kobe and Timmy want to kill each other on the court.

Anybody who says Manu doesn’t have an above the rim game needs to go back and check the highlights from the last Spurs-Pistons Finals. Dude crammed a couple in traffic that were just awesome!

  59. Celts Fan says:

youngfed, the Spurs stuff was answering Austin’s post.

for the record, I’d love for today’s game to be officiated (physicallity/fouls wise) the way they did in the 80′s. Hard fouls were just that, only normal fouls. You didn’t get tossed for just glancing dude’s head, and they didn’t suspend guys (Songalia) only because he tapped a star (LeBron) even though if it was done to someone less newsworthy, there’d be NO punishment at all (like Big Z kneeing Cassell in the back of the head, which was sort of bad, but both looked relatively unintentional, with neither being worthy of a suspension as far as I’m concerned.)

If they called fouls on the Bad Boys against MJ like they do for DWade or LeBron now, MJ would’ve averaged 70 ppg in the Playoffs and 40 trips to the stripe a night…

  60. PALakerFan says:

I hated the Pistons but loved seeing them hammer Jordan. He was such an arrogant prick.

  61. Celts Fan says:

Right PA, cuz Bill Laimbeer was wicked nice…

  62. DaPro says:

    That’s no doubt Celts Fan

The league is so scared of another “Malice at the Palace” incident that they go overboard with foul calls

    MJ could easily get his

    @PALakerFan

Mj never really over handled the ball, maybe during the 80′s but the 90′s version was effiecient fam

He took a few dribbles created space and stuck a j or took it to the hole

  63. DaPro says:

    that’s efficient

    Thank God it’s Friday

  64. Celts Fan says:

“The league is so scared of another “Malice at the Palace” incident that they go overboard with foul calls”

which is dumb, because everyone knows it wasn’t the foul that started that, it was the goon that chucked the beer and the fact that the guy who got hit by it is a crazy person.

  65. TG says:

Chicago isn’t trading the #1 pick. There has been a trade idea floated on the Bulls board that would have Kirk Hinrich go to Portland for LaFrentz’s expiring deal and the #13 pick.

Hinrich is an upgrade from Blake and Jack and would give the Blazers a very nice backcourt to go along with Oden and Aldridge.

  66. Celts Fan says:

I’m not a fan of that idea at all for Chicago. I think Hinrich’s better than he played last year and will return to form with a real team around him and not everyone in turmoil, going for their own #s, trying to up that next contract, and without a potential Kobe trade hanging over their heads. There’s still a HUGE need for a low post scorer, so they should take Beasley and keep everyone else (except Ben Gordon if he’s still thinking he’s worth more than $10M per.)

  67. srb says:

The number one reason for the celtics losing last night: Tony Allen and Glen Davis played. AT THE SAME TIME.

  68. Celts Fan says:

Every time I hear these kinds of trade scenarios being tossed around, 2 trades always come to mind. Elton Brand being dealt for Tyson Chandler and TMac being dealt after they drafted Dwight Howard but before they ever played together.

Sometimes you can over think it. Just make your pick, see how everything works, and make a move afterwards if things aren’t working out. Kirk is what, like 26? There’s still PLENTY of time left for Beasley to develop and Kirk to still be in his prime (with Deng, potentially Gordon, Noah, Aaron Gray, Thabo Sefolosha, potentially Duhon, Drew Gooden all being right around the same age range to develop and grow together.)

I love all these rumors that come out. They make the offseason (well, offseason for most teams, but after a decade of futility, finally not mine!) very fun, but some of them are just insane. I don’t get this from Chicago’s point (though if I’m Portland, I’m all over it!)

  69. Tim says:

Ray Allen might of found his shot, but we also found out he can’t guard a rookie named Rodney Stuckey…

  70. Ian says:

boston wins when allen plays bad

“a kg team in never desperate” LOL
they never get the chance to get desperate they are usually bounced out the playoffs way too fast

  71. Krayzie says:

KG’s best dunk was back in the day in the post on a pump fake and step through on Mutombo….NASTY!

  72. GEE...don't try to swing cause ya couldn't even hang...yoooo says:

Game was boring. I went to sleep.

Lakers vs. Spurs more entertaining just to see what Kobe gone do.

It ain’t that the Spurs are boring it’s all in the way they look. Them cats don’t look like ballas. Granted they will whip ya *** but they don’t look like ballas or have do the expressions that ballas do.

Boston will get 1 in Detroit and still win series.

Sheed better watch himself. 2 more and he down.

Stop snitching and then stop floppin!
You all have a good weekend! 1

  73. SAS Sizzle says:

If the Spurs had Gerald Wallace nobody would call them boring anymore, sad but possibly true.

Just cuz they don’t have any high-flyers, I mean damn so what? Winning never bores me, I’ve been pretty satisfied for the last five years…it’s all a matter of perspective.

Anyone who thinks the Lakers demoralized the Spurs needs to wake up, if they win Game 2 tonight it’s no different than if they had won the first one, HCA back to SAS!!! Now that Boston finally lost one, Spurs are the best home-court team left in the playoffs.

  74. sans says:

It’s the player’s jobs to make great plays, the refs to make great calls. How about Rondo getting called for obstructing the eyes, the rarest of all fouls calls ever whistled. I had a ref in my bar with me and were laughing at that. Rondo was all “What?! When did that become a foul?” Hilarious. And Detroit looked like a well executed machine out there. JVG will coach Boston next season.

  75. Tim says:

    @ Celts Fan

Whats even cooler is that Tattoo is his family…his wife and kids…I’d imagine one is of him too.

But yes it is a sweet ass tattoo.

  76. Tim says:

and everyone should be rooting for the pistons to win the title, just so they can enjoy watching McDyess celebrate…that poor guy. Earlier before the season he said in the off season he just told himself he would never get one and have to live with it.
