The Best Season Ever? (Dime #41)

IMAGE DESCRIPTIONDime #41

As you can see on the DimeMag.com home page, we just dropped Issue #41 on newsstands nationawide, our special tribute to what we believe has been “The Best Season Ever.”

When we look back at the ’07-08 regular season, not to mention these playoffs so far, there were just too many compelling stories, players and performances to deny, whether it was the Kobe vs. Chris Paul, the Western Conference playoff race, the Rockets’ 22-game win streak, the Shaq/Gasol/Kidd trades, the night-after-night numerical brilliance of LeBron James, the Big Three’s dominance in Boston, or the emergence of young superstars like Brandon Roy and Dwight Howard.

Would you agree that this was the League’s best season ever? Can you think of one that tops it? What was your favorite moment? Which team or individual impressed you the most? Or was there one missing element that could have pushed things over the top for you?

Dime #41 available on newsstands now.

  1. Chuck...Haters come in all fashions and forms so bear arms says:

I can’t say it’s the BEST season ever, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird’s emergence was pretty off the chain even though I’m not old enough to know about it like that, I hear how people talk about it and their eyes light up like christmas trees. The bulls dynasty was pretty exciting too. Cause at that time we had so many bulls haters it was ridiculous, especially when Mike decided to come back from basbeball and they got Rodman, that was off the chain too.

  2. pimpin says:

    first?

  3. InItToWinIt says:

It was a pretty great season. BEST Western Conf. ever. Warriors were the best team to ever make the lottery. Lot of great superstars in their prime all at different ages. Special season.

  4. Prof. TX says:

The trades made it interesting, but it also makes things look pretty shady. Deals like KG or Pau/Kwame make you think that the business is about getting favors from friends rather than what’s best for a team. More than one writer has suggested that if McHale had been a Sun or a Rocket or a Mav then that’s where KG would be right now.

  5. stephen stepp from louisa ky says:

    I’ll take 1997.
The inaugural season of the Dub.
    Comets over Liberty 65-51.
Like with 9/11, I’ll never forget where I was that day. Took the day off at K-Mart to watch the game with my boy Chester and his cat, Lobo.
    Cyntia Cooper, MVP.
    Where my girlz at?!

  6. stephen stepp from louisa ky says:

Just curious: Does anyone know what Dime is doing (like commemorative mag wise) to celebrate 12 years of the Dub? I would love the chance to contribute! Spread the word about our superwomen. Lauren Jackson Lauren Jackson Lauren Jackson Lauren Jac……………….

  7. cbizzle says:

I think it ranks right up there. I’ll give 3 reasons.
    1) The amount of young, marketable, high character superstars emerging. DHow, CP3, Deron Williams, a maturing Kobe Bryant, etc. They brought an energy and level of enjoyment to the game. We haven’t such an infusion of young talent in a while. 2)The amount of classic games we’ve had. Not just down-to-the-wire close games, but real, 2 and 3 OT thriller type classics. 3) The absolutely RIDICULOUS western conference. I don’t think we may ever see another conference or race in general as deep and crazy as this year’s West.

  8. djkianoosh says:

oh that’s cold, no defending champs on the cover. ouch!

apart from that, it’s been a great year overall. especially cause the knicks sucked so bad LOL!

  9. DaPro says:

It’s one of the best seasons 4 reasons already mentioned

As a fan of the League- no doubt. One of the most memorable seasons and post seasons, never has the League been more even

As a fan of the Bulls-disappointed, that is until we got the #1 pick

  10. alex says:

oh that’s cold, no defending champs on the cover. ouch! – yeah what’s up with that. what if they end up winning again this year?

  11. Jay says:

    ^^
The feature is about the best season ever… even if the Spurs win the title this year too it doesn’t mean they did anything memorable during the regular season.

  12. illfil27 says:

It was an outstanding season for sure. Very interesting and tense, but I still miss the NBA from the 90′s. That’s why I’d shy away from saying that this was the best season ever.
What I found most entertaining was the CP3 vs. Deron Williams rivalry. This will be a worthy match up for seasons to come. Still I miss players from back in the 90′s like Penny Hardaway or a young Allen Iverson. Although there sure are charismatic players in the league like CP3, Deron, Dwight and others.
However, it was one of the most exciting season I can recall.

  13. qq says:

Every season MJ played in was better. Even Wizards ones.

  14. GEE...I'll take a muscle-bound man and put his face in the sand. says:

    It was a spectacular season.

Houston – 22 game winning streak …record books
L.A. – MVP and an All Star caliber player for free
San An. – Still doing it
    Detroit – Still doing it
N.O. – Spectacular season compared to last
    Utah – Deron Williams
Boston – Bringing pride back to the Celtics
Atl. – Taking Boston to 7 and Al Horford
    Seattle – Kevin Durant
    Dallas – Jason Kidd
Phoenix – Getting The Big Dookie
Miami – Getting rid of The Big Dookie and gettin Shawn
L.A.C. – Elton Brand coming back pretty well
Port. – Young guns looking good
Philly – Doing ok with a team that should get better
Cleve. – LeBron staying healthy despite his heavy load
Denver – Knowing George Karl won’t coach there always
G.S. – Chris Webber didn’t try to play through
    New Y. – New Coach
    Minn – High Draft pick
    Chi. – Beasley
N.J. – Vince was healthy at the end of the season
Toronto – Jose doing well and T.J. Ford recovering
Memphis – Helping another team succeed

A great All -Star Dunk contest, tight West race and just a slew of stuff.

Most def. one of, if not the best season ever.

  15. YOUNGFED says:

Best Season Ever exciting from start to finish. Great cover Dime now send me my Damn issue!!! lol

  16. dh says:

best season i have ever seen…

(the bulls 72 win season was great for them but not for the whole league).

i loved the west this year as well as the potential and/ or emergence of several young teams (hornets, jazz, lakers, orlando, hawks, 76ers)…

i’ve never watched so many non-laker games in my life.

parity makes for better basketball and thats what we had a lot of this year.

i’ve never watched so many non-laker games in my life.

ps. oden, mayo, rose, beasley coming up…
    could next year be better?

  17. miamiVIS3 says:

for sure the best season ever for the league as a whole although my Heat sucked but we did drop Shaq and we got Beasley or Rose coming (No trade, if you recall the dolphins said theyd trade thier pick too and that never happened)

  18. miamiVIS3 says:

Also they couldn’t trade the pick they could only trade the player cuz that pick is Minne’s for Ricky Buckets but its protected.

  19. Celts Fan says:

Completely agree CBizzle (post 7) but also have to add in the flurry of trades that was kickstarted on draft night with Ray Allen, the emergence of young teams like the Hawks and Blazers (portland missed the playoffs, but rattled off something like 13 straight and looks to be a FORCE for the next decade) the West, the lottery, the Knicks somehow sucking even more, the Isiah conviction, Steph losing his mind, Steph’s back seat, the Zach Randolph/Eddy Curry low post tandem, Brandon Roy (not mentioned in that list of new, up-and-coming marketable stars,) Kobe’s transformation from great individual talent to MVP, KG being completely insane, the reemergence of 2 of the league’s signature franchises (LAL and Boston,) a GREAT playoffs, Charles still being Charles, JJ Redick still getting no burn (fuck Duke,) the fact Rodney Stuckey looks like a SMALLER version of 50 (hilarious that a pro athlete would look like a smaller version of any musician,) Gil’s blog still going strong (don’t stop!) DeShawn Stevenson’s tat (dollar signs and bullet holes? I mean, really???) Drew Gooden’s beard, guys like Beno Udrah and Hedo Turkalu getting a chance and making the most of it long after they’d been given up on as impact players, Rasheed still being amazing (the pregame huddle is always classic,) and Paul Pierce and Eddie House’s pregame high 5, which consists of rolling the dice and then snatching up the $$$.

I don’t know if it was definitively the best season, but it was AMAZING either way…

  20. daquest?on says:

how come ai gets no love on the cover???

  21. Blue says:

for as great as the regular season was…and it was pretty damn spectacular, the playoffs have been a kind of disappointment.

  22. Bring Lil' Penny back says:

This season would have been better if only Yao Ming hadn’t blown out his foot…granted

  23. Damon says:

sry, off topic, but this is hilarious
    http://detroitbadboys.spreadshirt.com/us/US/Shop/Article/Index/article/No-Ginobili-Ringer-2175279#

  24. dh says:

    Blue,
i think the triple overtime game 1 of the spurs vs suns series made these playoffs pretty spectacular.

  25. sans says:

Man, if the Suns beat the Spurs it would have been the best ever. Or if the Hornets beat the Spurs, and mos def when the Lakers beat the Spurs it will put this season together to be the best ever. The reemergence of the Celtics, the Eastern Conference coming back (it takes two conferences to make shit interesting), and having the most-hated player in the League being a force to be reckoned with, thanks to the legit squad that Kobe has around him, has made this a great season.

Only thing that could ruin it is if Gang Green fucks it up and falls asleep at the wheel again.

  26. Dagomar says:

    Favourite moments:

The Lakers/Cavs games, seeing two all-time greats going at it.

    Biggest shock:

    The Shaq trade.

  27. Mister Sun says:

    favorite moment: kobe winning mvp

biggest shock: pistons actually having “fans”

  28. Blue says:

    @ dh
that game was pretty damn awesome! but other than that, i just haven’t really been that into it. maybe because there have been no major upsets.

  29. dh says:

true, no upsets. except for maybe the celts losing every road game in the playoffs. thats crazy. who would have thought?

  30. K Dizzle - Take the quarter out yo; as* cuz you played yourself says:

Tight cover. Hope there ain’t no SI-like curse cuz y’all got Lakers and Celtics on the cover, but no Pistons or Spurs

  31. MoxWestCoastRep says:

Cant wait to get my copy in the mail!!

  32. Mister Sun says:

why should there be pictures of detroit or san antonio, nobody cares about those teams.

  33. Ding Dong the Hornets are Dead says:

    @ 14
“N.J. – Vince was healthy at the end of the season”
Really? That’s something to measure this season by?

Deshawn and Gilbert bringing the smack into the L against the Cavs was great.

  34. goonther says:

    @ 33

the smack def brought a new element to some of those games…. you were just waiting to see lebron go off on deshawn – or deshawn go off on lebrons face with his fist.

    funniest moment this season???

#1 damon jones with the “you cant see me” in desawns face
#2 the big balls dance by cassell (always a classic)

  35. miamiVIS3 says:

I know this is off topic but ive been reading mock draafts and the Blazers will draft Donte Green in the first round mark it down

  36. Big V says:

’05-’06 was the best playoffs I’ve ever seen in my life, hands down.

  37. yallallreadyknow says:

    2007-2008 best season ever?
    NO WAY!

yall are bugging. rookies sucked. name a 3rd rookie that had an impact?….im waiting….yeah; there were none.

eastern conference sucked. teams under .500 making the playoffs. madness.

ticket prices are at there highest level to attend a game

    a cheating referee

the worst sports media coverage ever for an nba season

    gm favorships on trades

players demanding trades to certain teams/cities and quiting on their current squads (jason kidd—this means you)

the business legality of “buyouts” (worse than in any other season)

no guys…..this definitely was not the nba’s best season ever. shame on yall for even mentioning that nonesense

  38. yallallreadyknow says:

    also…

not to mention the wackass nba commercials.
the “where amazing happens” campaign is shitty.

and the split screen playoff commercial was actually good with kobe/shaq…
…but now you just change the channel when a new one comes on

..can’t wait to see that ginobli/vujavic split screen…UGH

surely NOT the best season ever

  39. jahred says:

Nice Cover… Except that after June you will wonder why back-to-back champs were not on cover…

  40. karan says:

nice cover, but i think you should’ve waited before the playoff finishes to call it the best ever… i mean, the most important part of the year is right now

  41. Matt Ballou says:

Nice Cover except for the omission of any one from the defending champs! Once again, no love for the Spurs! I mean I know folks don’t like them but they are part of the story! I’m in DC and I love the Spurs, I wish the Wizards played some defense like them! Go Spurs!

  42. QQ says:

Best season of the 2000s, but EVER??? Come on now.

1988-89 – MJ dropping 33, 8 and 8 for the season(say what?); Magic vs Bird at it’s peak (legendary players going head to head, damn); the Bad Boys; and the year the NBA FINALLY arrived (nothing tops this).

    88-89. Best season ever

  43. QQ says:

One missing element that could have pushed things over the top for me:

The Suns finally defeating the Spurs in the Playoffs.

But even though I hate the Spurs, they’re too good and the Suns don’t DESERVE to beat them.

  44. catdaddywhack says:

If it ends with a Lakers-Celtics finals, maybe it can be….

  45. dh says:

    @yallallreadyknow:

who cares about rookies? they have been over hyped for years and when they don’t average 30-10-10 people say they are a bust.

also, i think the western conference parity made up for the weak east.

who cares if the comercials sucked…
“basketball wise,” i beleive it was the best ever.

  46. doc says:

    yall,Thad Young.
