Who is the Ultimate Franchise Player?
Dwight Howard (photo. Mannion)A few times in the Dime office we’ve kicked around the idea of what would happen in an NBA “re-Draft.” It’s just like what you can do in any NBA 2K or Madden video game, when you basically start from scratch and empty the rosters, and teams start over drafting current players.
The first pick is usually a heavy debate, and comes down to a few options: Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Kobe and LeBron. Considering talent, potential and age, they’re clearly the top four.
But that’s just us. If you were starting a franchise, which player would you pick first? Tell us who and why in the comments…

rangerjohn says:
if it is an all time, WILT then duncan, if it is a right now, howard due to the sheer potential. he is young, dominant and he has not even tapped his game yet. there is not another player in his age cat with his potential.

what all time I’ll go with MJ over Wilt and Kareem right now
I’ll take LeBron over Paul but ask me in a couple of years and I’ll regret it not haven taken howard

Big Freeze says:
If I’m starting a franchise, it would depend on what my goals are for the franchise. For revenue and ticket sales, I would pick Lebron because he is a marketing machine and he would fill the seats. However, if winning is the goal, I would pick Chris Paul because he has the ability to substantially elevate all of his teammates’ abilities and confidence.

I’d go with Lebron, followed by CP3 and Deron Williams. Those guys make whomever they play with better and that is what you need to start a team.

If I am look to win now, then it is definitely Kobe Bryant. Whereas, if I am looking to build a solid team to make the playoffs and compete for ‘chips on a consistent basis, a la Spurs, then it is definitely Chris Paul and then Lebron James.

weng santos says:
All time? Jordan. The greatest ever.
Right now? Kobe. The greatest ever, reincarnated.
And I don’t even like those 2. But they’re both ultra-talented, I have to admit. And the league likes them both, so that’s a huge plus to have the entire NBA wanting you to win.

All time has to be MJ, he took the success that Bird and Magic generated and made it into a global game.
He was the ultimate ticket seller, the only player to have his jersey retired and hang on another team rafters

All-time MJ, Shaq, Magic.
Now kobe, The King, CP3

Yoa ming beofre the injuries then, LBJ howard, did everyone forget D-Wade? Wade IS better than paul and Williams. Seriously. Untill any of the new blood get a chip or play in the finals they don’t get a nod over flash or Gils (pre injury he was nice as LBJ)

JA says:
Next few years: Kobe
Looking further out: Chris Paul
Why not Lebron/Dwight: Until either can shoot freethrows, I wouldn’t consider either a true franchise player. You have to be able to count on your franchise player to come through when the game is on the line (pun intended).
May 28th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Big Freeze says:
If I was gonna start a franchise of slow, white, red-headed dudes, I would definitely pick Matt Bonner at number one, followed closely by Brian Scalabrini. Then I would pick…..well, I guess that’s it. It would have to be a two-on-two league.

Bobby stew says:
I’d have to go with CP3 (not Candace Parker but she’s good too) for several reasons. He is young enough to maintain a high level of play for years to come, yet is experienced enough to be a true leader. He also is the best at making his teammates better, just look at Chandler. I would like to think that the most important position is the point guard spot because they handle the ball more than anyone else and make the most important decisions. He also seems to be a great community guy and genuine role model. He would be my #1 pick as far as a Franchise Player on and off the court.

Just look at the players now and the teams they have. Kobe and CP3 have All Star or near All Star caliber players. Howard has Rashard Lewis and Hedo who are dependable players. LBJ on the other hand, he is goin on the court with what seems like a JV team and he still carries them to the Finals last year and near defeat of the Celts this year. Kid is 23, motivated and is by far the greatest player at his age in the history of the game. Dont see the downside there. LeBron #1 in my draft redo

If it’s all time, and you pick Jordan, he’d still be in his 40s if you start the franchise today… it says you have to consider AGE. If age wasn’t an issue, there would be no debate on who the 1st pick is. C’mon ppl, are we forgetting Jordan was the greatest to every play already?
if we consider their ages, then it would be Lebron, Dwight, then CP3

WOW? What a question.
Dwight Howard has nice peices around him and he didn’t get past the 2nd round
Kobe struggled the last 2 years to get out of the 2nd round with in my opinion a pretty decent squad and dude’s attitude was garbage although his work ethic is amazing.
Lebron took a team to the finals that couldn’t beat a rec team at the YMCA.
Chris Paul resurfaced talent in previously injured and has been players.
I would take Lebron
1. His size
2 His durability
3 court vision
4 ability to score
5 makes his teammates better
6 work ethic
7 proven winner
8 his maturity as a person and player
9 also has the ability to rebound and play D (when he has the energy)
His work ethic will ensure that his perimeter shot and jumper improve. A lebron james with players that compliment his unique size and speed would be DANGEROUS!

Lebron makes everyone around him better (well, as much as you can with that bunch of misfits), he can win you the game or keep you in a series single-handedly.
I’m lovin’ what the lakers are doing now but the truth is that with a good team Lebron would be working on his second championship.
The good news in all this is that because of Cleveland’s ineptitude we get to see Lebron and Jay-Z team-up in Brookyn to create the coolest franchise in NBA history…or is it?

JA says:
Lebron or Dwight would both be unstoppable if they ever learned how to shoot freethrows.
Lebron’s FTs have pretty much regressed every single year he’s been in the league, and his 3pt% has fallen each of the last three years.
Not really sure where this whole “Lebron has such a great work ethic” thing comes from. I think he’s too busy doing commercials, SNL skits, and chasing Jay-Z around to be considered hard working – at least when it comes to basketball.

Celts Fan says:
JA, I’m not a big fan of LeBron either, but remember 2 years ago? he couldn’t shoot AT ALL. It’s pretty consistent now. that’s hard work.
Ranger, “all time, Wilt then Duncan.” Can I hit that too? Damn man, that must be some good stuff…
and Shaq’s probably just outside the top 5 all time.
My all time top 5
1. MJ
2. Magic
3. (tie) Russell, Wilt
5. Kareem
Right now
1. LeBron (his defense is coming, his shot’s already here, but only getting better, once he gets teammates, it’s over)
2. Kobe (sure it’s only for a few years, but that few years will end with a trophy as long as you surround him with the right cast.)
3. Dwight (too big to put below the PGs even if he can’t shoot)
4. CP3
5. Deron
6. Brandon Roy
After that, is where I’m struggling to weight 2-3 years of Duncan/KG at their apex vs. the potential of Durant/Oden vs. guys that are clearly a step below KG and Duncan like Amare, Marion, Josh Smith, Big Al, Horford, etc. so I’ll just end it right there…

Kudabeen says:
All Time – Wilt. (I would get a floor general next to bark at him (Oscar Robertson or Isiah Thomas). Very skilled. He was Dwight before Dwight, a man child. He just didn’t have the environment to highlight talents. If a man averages 30+ppg 20+rpg 5+apg, how do you make the argument that he wasn’t the that dude? It baffles me to no end… 50ppg and 48.5mpg people!! People exclude Wilt like discarding an extreme test sample so that it doesn’t skew the overall data. It’s not his fault that he was that good…Ya’ll don’t hear me…
Anywho…
Nowadays – LeBron, I love Kobe’s passion/skill, but he bailed on his squad ON THE COURT too many times for my taste. LeBron seems to be realizing how dominant he can be. If not Bron I go Paul then Howard.
Just Because – KG. Say what you want I want a guy that loves the game and breathes team play and intensity. KG and Duncan have been the best bigs in the game, but I like Garnett’s overall energy more…(although I wish he would prove me right and give the Pistons a 20/20, 30/15, 40/15 type game and shut people up)
Sleeper – Josh Smith. He has so many accessories to his game. When he is ‘on’ he does everything on the floor. When he is off he still is doing things. I want to see what he does next season. Is he going to develop that mid-range game and his off the dribble game? Ridiculous talent.

Roy is really good- not nearly as good as wade though. deron is better now because of experience, if roy gets into the playoffs he will surpass deron IMO. It all depands on injuries, the organization $$ and will, luck, and the player.
I would take LeBron. He is a point forward and a big man.

@ dapro u have a very good point but look at shaq, wilt, russel, mutombo, duncan, Ewing, all except duncan have played a lot of years and they do things consistently maybe mutombo cant score but hes still good for at least 10 rebounds and a block..plus the last 8 years .. the nba championship has been won by either duncan and shaq
May 28th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Celts Fan says:
Unless you can draft the refs to call all the gift fouls for Dwyane, I’d absolutely take a great PG over him and a guy like Roy who’s versatile. Wade has no 3 point shot, isn’t a great defender, and has a history of injuries. Let him prove something next year without Shaq allowing him (a great 1 on 1 player) to go 1 on 1 for the majority of games. Until then, yes, below Roy and Deron. Wade’s really good, but he’s become very over-rated thanks to a title that he got a lot of help with (though he did put that team on his back and win that for them.) There are still a few holes in his game (remember, this is in context, we’re talking about a guy that should be the best player on a team.) Wade’s really good, but the injuries, lack of a 3 ball, and lack of great D make me drop him a bit. I’d say he’s at about #7 on my list, right before the “a couple years of Duncan/KG vs. 10 years of guys a tier below” decisions, but not above Roy or Deron.

he’s a better ball handler than roy, a better finisher/scorer than williams and a better rebounder than both.

ALL superstars get superstar calls…ALL OF THEM, until the league decides to do something about that, (and flopping) please just get over it.
@ #11…Shaq can’t shoot free throws, so by your definition he isn’t a franchise player either…am i understanding you correctly?
I’d go with Dwight first.
I think of all the mentioned choices, Dwight has the highest ceiling (lebron included). I’m telling you guys in a couple years, when he’s developed a nice jumper and a some Duncan like finesse in the post…you’ll be kicking yourselves. Kid’s already a beast. Let’s not forget that he’s younger than everyone’s favorite freak of nature too(lebron).

Can’t go worng with a big unless you have a guard or forward who the opposing team can’t match up with
With that being said looking at current players I’d go King James first
Dwight is a close second but he can be defended and has yet to learn to pass better out of a double team
I know this on potential but Bron has a better hoopz I.Q than Howard
May 28th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Three Stacks says:
Chris Paul.
The game is changing, small ball will rule in the near future. You can’t win w/o an elite ball-handler (not just a PG, so Kobe and Lebron’s teams will always compete), and Chris Paul is the best the L has to offer right now. Seriously, you stick someone like Deron, CP, or Nash on any team in the East and they’d become instant playoff contenders.
May 28th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Celts Fan says:
Deron Williams could be a top 10 PG by the time all’s said and done and has all the talent around him to get a chip or 2.
I can see people saying Roy’s not as good, but let’s see. Without Shaq (both early on due to injuries and after the trade), Miami was THE WORST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE. I’d put Dwyane top 7, but I stick by my statement of below Roy. Wade is not unstoppable. He’s a great driver when he gets to play 1 on 1 (hence what I was saying about him) but now that Shaq’s gone so they don’t have to play him mainly 1 on 1, we’ll see. That’s all I’m saying is I have my doubts that he’s quite as good as some people think. Is he a top 15-20 guy in the league? No question. Is he a top 10 guy when you’re thinking about starting a franchise today (thus taking out pretty much everyone over 29) Absolutely. I just don’t know that I’d take him over the 2nd best PG in the league or a guy in Brandon Roy that does EVERYTHING well and led a really young team to playoff contention IN THE WEST this year, while Dwyane was on the worst team in the league in the East (the piss poor quality of the East evens out Dwyane not being completely healthy this year.) Either way, I had him as 7th, so it’s not like I’m saying the guy’s useless…

CeltsFan,
I like your list although I would personally put D-Wade over Roy and D-Will over CP3. Your top 5 all-time is the same as mine except I have Magic #1 and MJ #2. My next two players are Bird and Oscar. If I had to start a franchise with anyone in history at their peak it would be ‘85 era Magic.
May 28th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Jim says:
I can’t see how you take a 1. As weird as it seems, you don’t win chips with 1s, Isiah is the beginning and end of that list. That may end with these dominant guys, but I doubt it. The under 30 crowd is stacked with beasts at the 2.5-4.5.
Lebron and Dwight are 1 and 2, but I don’t think it’s that close. I would have said Dwight 2 years ago, but I don’t think he’s developed any of the “greatness” attributes Lebron has.
All-time…tough call after $$$. The bigs are hard to compare, if you are guaranteed a scorer then Russell has to have it. Otherwise I think you go with Kareem.

All time, I would pick Magic Johnson. Bigs may win the game, but the points run the show. Evem if it may be blasphemy to pick anyone other than MJ.
Seriously, Michael’s Bulls wouldn’t win a championship in the 80’s. The Lakers and Celtics, not to mention the Sixers, Houston, Detroit, et al, were way too stacked.
Chicago might’ve had the best player, but up and down the rosters, the 90’s Bulls don’t matchup well with any of those 80’s teams. Honestly, you think those Sonics and Jazz teams were anywhere near the caliber of the runner-ups in the 80’s?

Historically, dominant big men have won championships. But I really think the tide is turning in the NBA, player’s like CP3 and Deron, or wing players who have the ball in their hands a lot, like Kobe and Lebron, are the future of this league.
The best pure big man right now is Dwight, and even if he’s still young and raw, he hasn’t done much in the League. His numbers this yr and last yr aren’t dramatically different, and most people attribute Orlando’s success this yr to Turkoglu’s emergence.
2nd is probably Amare, who’s success is largely dependent on Nash.
Who’s 3rd? Al Jefferson? There aren’t many dominant big men around. And they all have an Achilles’ heel (Dwight’s FT&, Amare’s defense)
CP3, Deron, Lebron, on the other hand, have all been deep into the playoffs as their team leaders by their 3rd years. Out of the current group, I would definitely choose a point/ball handling forward over a big man.

“Dwight Howard has nice peices around him and he didn’t get past the 2nd round”
Dwight Howard has Hedo, who was in some kind of mood in the second round due to being named MIP. It went to his head a bit too much. Then he has Rashard Lewis who, bar one or two games, didn’t really show up for the post season and then you got midget Nelson. That’s it. Given Dwight was the only NBA standard 4 or 5 player in the team, I’d say he wasn’t too bad.
Seriously, from the outside in, Orlando’s situation is good but we have a max contract player playing out of position, no depth and no starting SG. And no, Mo Evans is no starting-grade SG. I’m just hoping we don’t fuck up yet another draft this year.

No one would be able to match the height, the potential, or the fire of any of these guys. Magic is easily averaging 20 assists a game, Jordan still scores his 25-30, Bird leads the league in 3-point attempts and percentage, Howard and Russell both average double doubles and are 1 and 2 in blocks.

SG-RAJA BELL: Defense and 3-point shooting
SF-GERALD WALLACE: Defense and finisher

You have to have someone you can pound the ball into consistently throughout the game…Garnett or Howard…LBJ is going to do your scoring….Ray is only there for crunch time shots and to produce when the double teams come…CP3 is there orchestrate the offense…Either way, you would have to have a big to start your franchise with, so D Howard is the first pick in the draft
