There’s a lot of talk about acquiring Michael Redd from the Milwaukee Bucks, and it might be realistic.
The Bucks have a new GM and a new coach, and there seems to be a strong feeling from Milwaukee that Redd will be traded. A rebuilding team does not want $50 million in future contracts gumming up the works.
Redd, a career 20-point scorer, averaged 22.7 points per game last season, his lowest since 2002-03. He and LeBron James have played together on Team USA, and his scoring could be energized playing on the same team as James.A lineup that includes Delonte West and Redd at guard is pretty appealing.
Redd will make $15.8 million, $17 million and $18.3 million (player option) the next three seasons. The Cavs have Szczerbiak’s $13 million and Damon Jones’ $4.5 million in expiring contracts to work with.
Redd would definitely be a nice piece to run with ‘Bron. At the very least, he’s a guy who can put up 20 or more on any given night. The question is though, is that enough to get the Cavs where they need to be? Probably not. Even if they add Redd, they’re still probably at least two players away from being serious contenders. They’d need a true point guard and a consistent low-post scoring presence before they could legitimately take on the Western powers in a Finals series.

Seriously, another spot up shooter is the last thing that Cleveland needs. They need a big body who can score. They currently have a 7 footer who travels every play, a guy with a fro who plays in the NBA but still hasn’t figured out how to do a lay-up, a 40 year old with knee wraps and a bum jumper, and a brazilian kid who annoys the shit out of fans and teammates alike. They need to get Sheed ASAP

Joe smith isn’t that bad dude just old. Big Z is a better true center than half the teams in the NBA have. Rasheed is at the point in his career where he is turning into Donyell “ludicris” Marshall. Mike Redd can shoot and get his own shoot. Someithing Damon Jones, Boobie, and Wally can’t do. Be serious guys. While Mike may not get them past kobe. All Bron needed was someone any one in game 7 vs. boston to step up and score. Redd IS nasty.

Dear God… they don’t need a true point guard! With LeBron, they don’t need a true point guard. MJ didn’t need one. Kobe doesn’t need one. Those kind of franchise players play with the ball, not off it. To put a true point guard with LeBron kills one of the best parts of his game. I do agree with him needing a good second scorer from the wings (Redd) and a solid post presence though…

redd wouldnt make a different…lebron dominantes the ball and redd isn’t a slasher or anything like that. It would the same as when hughes was there, cept redd doesnt play any defense. Just another person they would blame except lebron when they lose.

The one thing we can’t overlook is Redd can play. No one on that team aside from James, not even Wallace, can actually ball.
I’m by no means a Cavs fan, but watching what LeBron accomplished this year by himself—what he accomplished last year by himself—having a consistent and legitimate scoring presence would be HUGE for the Cavs and would make them so much harder to defend because LeBron would actually have a teammate that he can count on to make those jumpers when LeBron gets double (triple) teamed on every play.
Granted, what the Cavs really need is a Scottie Pippin esque player that excels at the fundamentals: rebounding, defense, etc. but Redd would certainly improve the Cavs by leaps and bounds unlike last season where they just didn’t do anything.

jimmhumm nailed it in post 6 regarding Sheed. All you Sheed lovers at this stage probably are the same dudes saying what a major coup it was when Chicago signed Big Ben a couple of years ago!
In his prime early with Portland, Rasheed was quite good. At this stage he has some streaks from outside and some quarters when he looks great, but at the end of the game, he just has average numbers (and has been outplayed by his opposing power forward). So let’s put an end to the Sheed love crap. (I personally can’t wait until his post-NBA career when his nutso demeanor leads him to trump Rodman (well maybe not him), J.R. Rider, Vernon Maxwell and Spree in the AP police reports!)

But seriously LeBron needs ANY (M.Redd) sorts of help right now…
a player who can play decoy or a threat and just play run-n-gun like Phoenix if they are lacking a dominant force in the paint…and if they want to use Big Z then they can do just like Phoenix and slow it down and try n play big with James at the 3 and have M.Redd at the 2.

i’m totally of JAY’s opinion. additionally gooden wasn’t the only player (not even the only one that’s been involved in the chi deal for that matter) that wasn’t used right.
michael redd is no good for the cavs, neither personality, nor style. redd really can ball, as meica said, but a player like that get’s cut on every strength except shooting the ball by playing with lebron james.
people need to understand:
lebron will never have faith in a teammate offensively unless he’s a pure KILLER. carmelo would have been that type of player. redd isn’t. james fails because a team will never get a dynamic offense out of him unless you pair him with equal potential. just because he IS that good!
sad but true:
the biggest obstacle on lebron james’ road is lebron james (as he would say)

Micheal Redd isn’t that dude today, tommorrow or next week. The truth of the matter is. Dude is a spot up shooter. Cleveland has enough of those already. Why add more? Big Z, Lebron and ???, the question is, who would fit? Who would compliment Lebron and take some of the scoring pressure off of him? I don’t really have that answer, but I know it isn’t Micheal redd. What cleveland really needs, is a new head coach!! That should be the first thing they ship out. Mike Brown!!

Cleveland sucks. they don’t know what type of team they want have. Uptempo or defensive. They dont know.
What they should do…is move my man big z to the bench. insert ben wallace as the starting center and go after Antwain Jamison.
Jamison has a soft touch around the basket, can finish on the break, is unselfish and is a better rebounder than people give him credit for. And he can step out and stretch the defense.
The Cavs should look into making him an offer since he is a free agent.
LeBron James, Antawn Jamison and Ben Wallace is a very decent frontline.
Mike Brown signed a contract extension earlier this season; I believe for 2 more years. So Cleveland will not be getting rid of him anytime soon.

Eazy-Yi says:
If The Cavs want to make serious dollar they should push to get Eazy-Yi. Cavs would be rolling in revenue and LeBron will have a million more fans…back to reality, Ben Wallace still has potential to be a defensive anchor, about two years ago he was detroit’s go to defensive stopper and lived off putback dunks. LeBron IS the point guard, all they need is a dude who can knock down shots and they have two dude’s that can do that very well, what I don’t like is the Cavs recent obsession with holding on to old, to be frank, useless role players…Donyell Marshall? Damon Jones? WALLY? they need redd and they need to keep their young blood, try and pick up a decent, mobile big in the draft, Leon Powe was picked 49th in 2006 and he was solid off the bench behind KG! the talent is there Cleveland just need to be alot more active otherwise they are being unfair to LeBron and stealing his best years

Not a sports city? The Brewers are fielding a .500 team and selling out Miller Park every weekend, this city is dying for winning sports teams. It wasn’t that long ago that the Bradley Center was selling out nightly with a run to the Eastern Conference Finals, either.
Anyways, I don’t really see Milwaukee jumping on this without another team getting involved and sending them a useful player.

Personally i think they move lebron to the point “a la magic” and pick up a brandon rush or another athletic wing in the draft and trade for lemarcus aldrige for a low post scorer … only if i was a gm tho … and im not.

McLovin says:
lamarcus aldridge? low post scorer?? he scores the majority of his points of mid range jump shots, and might grab 3 boards while he is busy on the perimeter…i see why your not a GM

Ding Dong the Knicks are Dead says:
Lebron needs to move better without the ball, develop post moves and a reliable mid range jump shot, and like somebody else said, Cavs need someone like Pippen who has strong basketball fundamentals that can take the pressure off. Lebron needs to move better without the ball because his game is predictable. A capable PG is good enough. If the Bucks offer Redd for Wally and Damon Jones’ Red Jacket, Cavs will be silly not to take it, but it won’t win them a chip.

Red would be great alongside LBJ. They need another consistant shooter/scorer and Red fills that need, even if they have to give up boobie in the trade, i’d do it. Sheed aint the right fit for the cavs, but they do need an inside presence. I don’t know who they could get at the right price, but a young man in the draft would help. Go Jawai, he can score and play tough. Thats what this team needs, plus an offense orientated coach! Mike Brown ok, needs help though.

Jai says:
The cavs don’t need Mike Redd anymore, they have some guys that can play the 2. What they need is a player like Shawn Marion that can score from anywhere on the floor. He is a guy that would play the floor and can rebound and get out and run. Lebron needs a finisher. Name a guy on the Cavs roster that can actually catch an alley oops pass other than Bron? Don’t worry, I’ll wait? That aint Mike Redd. The Cavs would be better served going after Corey Magette even than Mike Redd. Magetter is big enough and strong enough to guard the paul pierces and kobe Bryants and let Lebron spend his energy on offense. What could LB have done in game 7 if Magette was on Pierce for the most part of the game instead of Bron having to play hard on both ends of the floor ever possession with no rest?
June 25th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Kevin says:
If you guys watched the playoffs, the only jumpshooter on the Cavs that wsn’t a liability on D was West. Pavlovic and Wally couldn’t keep up with Pierce, and Gibson struggled against Rondo…
Once they get a CONSISTENT 20 ppg scorer, that will help a lot… Ilgauskas is 2nd on the team with 14 ppg. At the next two spots are players that were traded away this season…
The big men they need at PF to replace Big Ben would come in the draft. They could choose from Darrell Arthur or Jason Thompson who were proven in college.
