Danilo Gallinari: Offensive Genius?
We read somewhere that Danilo Gallinari is an “offensive genius,” which is why he could legitimately go anywhere from #3 to #10 in tomorrow’s draft. In our future rookie projections, Andrew compared him favorably to Dirk Nowitzki. If you haven’t seen the kid play, here’s a clip that gives you an idea what he’s working with.

He’s faster than Dirk. Can finish like Ginobili with a little more control but not much of a dribble (no crossovers???). Mind you, I’m not saying he is a Manu, Dirk caliber type player from what I saw there. Overall, that video is nothing spectacular. One VERY BIG blaring thing missing from that video though……
Defense.

well, its only one clip, but its nothing special to me. he dunks few times, and it wasn’t like he was above rim or something and he hit few circus shots. plus, he barely jumps when he shoots jump shots

Jim says:
Hmmm, judging from this video and the assumed criteria, Stormile Swift is an offensive savant.

who cares about jumping when shooting, if he is able to shoot over the defender.

You’ve got to be kidding me. I don’t think we can make a fair judgement from this video. They show maybe 6 different clips three times each in slow motion and most of them are dunks. Please. He’s 6′9″. He SHOULD be able to dunk. What’s up with showing that up and under four times like it was Jordan’s last shot against the Jazz in the 98′ finals? He has talent obviously but the “genius” comment is premature.

Plus he’s doing this against Euro players. Let’s see if he can do that with one of the NBA’s better lockdown defenders on him.

Offensive genius? That might be a little much… Correction: that IS too much. Dude has game I’m sure, but those moves that he pulls off there are things I see my D2 alma mater do on a consistent basis. I guess I’ll let coach know that they all have futures in the NBA…
Ok, that might have been too hasty. Dude is good, maybe even great considering his skill set and height, but not an offensive genius… to suggest that is plain offensive.

You never see Dirk grabbing alley oops. Ever. Kid has some moves, doesn’t need a cross to blow past defenders, just a seam.

Brown says:
Didn’t they compare Andrea Bargnani to Dirk a couple years back and people were frothing at the mouth because of his “skills”? Having skill and athleticism doesn’t make you a baller. Heart, determination, intensity, drive, IQ, willingness to improve - these are all things you don’t see in a highlight reel, which wasn’t very impressive anyways. That first alley-oop he wasn’t even above the rim and barely finished it.
My only question is how much will he struggle his first couple years in the NBA? I’ll never get excited about Europeans in the draft because most of them look lost once they reach the NBA. All the Euros who’ve come out in the past number of years have been overrated. When will GMs learn?

Dagomar says:
Nobody’s saying this kid is going to be Dirk. You can’t project greatness from a highlight video. But you can get an idea of a kid’s talent, and the variety of skills he shows in this video and - from the looks of it - his already developed basketball IQ makes him pretty impressive.
