well…..z plays ball in the u.s.he gets payed in the u.s thats were he got his shot and this is where he gets the big money…why would the cavs let z go and play against us?that makes no sence..all teams should do it

I’ve been to Kaunas (Z’s hometown as well as that of my father). You walk around on Saturday afternoon and kids are playing pick up games everywhere. Every park and every house has a hoop and when you turn on the TV, non-stop NBA games with Lithuanian voice overs. The country is hoop crazy and they do pretty damn well for a country of 4M people or so. The Cavs ought to let him play – some things are bigger than the business of basketball. Yao is playing for China, Dirk’s suiting up for Germany and Lebron will wear the stars and stripes (and probably a Yankees ball cap). Let Z represent his country. Make it that much sweeter when USA wins the gold.

@ doc that might be true about arroyo and the magic but in the last tournaments arroyo has been one of the leading scorers and assits guys last time i checked the pr team beat the us team in the last olympics.

Let the man play. Honestly, so let’s say he’s a little more tired at the start of next season, or even if he gets injured, it’s not like he makes or breaks the Cavs’ championship hopes. If they don’t get another player or two they MIGHT make another deep playoff run, but probably not more than that.

Playing devil’s advocate: Lithuania is one of the better teams in the world. They’ve won bronze at the last two Olympics, I believe, and I think they medaled at a recent World Championship. By not allowing Ilgauskas — who is arguably the best Lithuanian player in the world today — the chance to play for his country in the Olympics, is Danny Ferry or the Cavs’ owner or whoever made this decision perhaps showing their own national pride, doing what they can to hurt Lithuania’s chances of beating Team USA? Just something to consider…

first, nba champion is world champion at club stage, not national stage. in football, or how you americans calls it, soccer, there is two kinds of world champions, one that is won by national team, and one that is won by best teams from europe, both americas, asia, africa i think…
as for z.. i do understand cavs point of view, but if they are letting ‘bron play, they should let z play too. i mean, its patriotic for american to play for usa, but if you are outside usa, you are not allowed to be patriot to your own country? double standards sucks big time
