How Do You Cut Dwyane Wade?

IMAGE DESCRIPTIONPhoto. Mannion

It was announced that USA Basketball will pick the final roster for this summer’s Olympics without holding tryouts once the NBA season draws to a close. No tryouts means no shot for some of the bubble players to prove to Mike Krzyzewski and USAB Managing Director Jerry Colangelo that they belong on the squad. The guy most affected by the announcement has to be Dwyane Wade, who after shutting it down early this NBA season in order to get his injured knee ready for Beijing, won’t have the chance to show that he’s 100%.

From the Miami Herald:

USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he will fly to Chicago to check on Wade, who has been working out after missing the final 21 games this season because of chronic soreness in his surgically repaired left knee. Wade probably will get a spot if he is healthy, but Colangelo wants to get ”a real read” on his rehab.

If Wade isn’t totally healthy, USAB can’t afford to give him a roster spot, especially when the final slot looks like it will come down to Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups and Deron Williams.

I think D-Wade should sit it out. As much as I love too see him play for Team USA they can fare without him and he needs the rest.

  2. pimpin says:

that is his tryout, when colangelo goes to the chi.

  3. Mike C says:

It would be a travesty if CP3 don’t grab that last spot

  4. jimmhumm says:

Wade has a ring he needs a gold medal though. Besides team USA needs their very best. D-wade is better than c-paul, d-williams, and billups. Seriously. People act like they forgot.

  5. Blue says:

as a miami heat fan, i wouldn’t be mad if d-wade didn’t get a spot on the roster. i’d prefer him to be well rested and 1000% healthy for the heat next season. i’m sure it would be a hard thing for d-wade, especially if the USA captures the gold, but i think next season, he’ll be a lot better off for it.

  6. DaPro says:

I think he chill and rehab this summer so he can hopefully come back 100%

I want to see Wade back on the court and rep Chi-town(even though he’s playing for the heat, it’s still all luv)

  7. Prof. TX says:

A HEALTHY Wade would be great for them, but when is that going to happen. He’s turning into Grant Hill 2.0, tons of talent and alot of ‘next MJ’ talk, but ending up with a reputation as always hurt and alot of talk about ‘what could have been.’
Hopefully he can put this behind him and not get hurt for at least a couple of seasons.

  8. pimpin says:

prof, thanks for the grant hill reference. Not for the injuries, but people forget how he was killing the league before his injury. He was a threat for 30,10, and 10 night in and night out. People act like they forgot. D-wade is ok, but Paul is a better pick for team USA. Actually deron Williams is a better fit than either tho. Big, can stay in front of his guy, and can distribute the ball while being able to take the big shot if needed. Neither Paul nor wade can do all of that, and team USA doesn’t need ANY “1 on 5″ type players, and definitely not an additional one.

  9. Kudabeen says:

Is it a guarantee that Kobe will play? I guess his surgery is a non-issue…

  10. heavy d says:

I don’t think Wade fits the International game very well. They should also be careful about going back to reputation being the main factor on making the team. He did play in 2006, so he built some equity but so did Hinrich and Joe Johnson and I don’t hear much clamoring for them to get spots.

  11. Kermit the Washington says:

DWade has to get his reputation back. He’s now known as being fragile, and you can’t expect Team USA to give you a spot just based on everything you did before 2006. Wade shouldn’t even be in the running

  12. mavid says:

People are gonna hate on this, but I really think Joe Johnson needs to be on the team. He can play 3 positions, has a deadly outside shot, can create for himself and others, is unselfish, is really committed on the defensive end, and is just an all-around great teammate to have.

  13. GEE...Shirley got a big ol butt ...OOhh Yeaaa! says:

Yea Wade should chill and get mentally ready for the task ahead with only GOD knows who.
The task ahead with Pat going scouting if they start losing.
The task ahead of having to carry the load yet again.

I wonder what his letter to basketball would say now.

    Dear Basketball,

This sh** got to get better!

    D. Wade

  14. Kobeef says:

Colangelo is looking at Kobe and Chris Paul as his starting backcourt so he is probably feeling OK about leaving Wade at home.

Mamba and CP3 will be the best backcourt in the world by a long stretch.

  15. Brado says:

Leave off Billups…D-Will and CP3 are both better players and have many years left. They should bring in these two because they can be with the team for years to come. If Wade is healthy he should be there.

  16. bballer1984 aka king ralf says:

He´s got to rest and rock the league 08/09 together with rose as a dream backcourt.

  17. yoda says:

    @Kudabeen
i’ve read long time ago that kobe said he will hold with surgery till after olympics, so he might miss start of nba training camp due to rehab.

  18. fallinup says:

I say if he is ready to play, go for the gold in Beijing. He won’t be playing as hard as he will in the Olympics as with the Heat. He can use the summer games as a way to “rehab” and shape up for the start of the season. 4 years down the road seems like a lifetime in basketball years, so who knows if he’ll ever get a shot at a medal. He’s got a ring, and he’s got a way better supporting cast on Team USA to lean on than in MIA.

  19. justin says:

Heavy D, you say D Wade’s game doesn’t fit the international game well. Go look at the stats from 2006 qualifying tournament and you will see the guy averaged over 19 points a game in 22 minutes of action and shot .576% from the field. Wade and Melo were by far the 2 best players on the team. I am a Heat fan and I hope Wade does NOT make the team. I think it will motivate him to get back to where he was before the injuries and give his body more time to get healthy.

  20. eyeused2b says:

Watching Wade play under FIBA rules left me less than impressed. All I seem to remember are an unhealthy amount of bricked jumpers. Yeah, he scored a lot and his FG% looked good on paper, but they didn’t win b/c the team wasn’t properly constructed. Wade was doing his bull in a China shop routine, and that worked fine until Greece waxed that arse. I actually recall wondering why Kapono or some other shooter wasn’t filling Wade’s spot.

If the US was about winning the gold and not about marketing the NBA, maybe a former Euro league MVP like Anthony Parker could come off the bench. He obviously excelled in that style of play, and he has a pretty decent shot. So, who cares if Wade doesn’t make it.

  21. Diego says:

    @eyeused2b: Great points.

    C. Paul and D. Williams up; Chauncy and D. Wade down. I’m digging Joe Johnson too (but I’m an ATL homer, so take it as you will).

  22. doc says:

Fuck them stats like my man said Wade game look ugly the last time he was in international play. They was forcing him to shoot that ugly ass jumper he got when it was time to win the medal and Redd and Miller hit those shots.Keep the same team from last year except cut Chauncey for CP3

  23. Celts Fan says:

didn’t think Wade’s game’s greatly suited for international ball either. A guy like Chauncey or Joe Johnson can play multiple positions and are great shooters. These guys brought in Shane Battier and Luke Ridnour though, so who knows what their final roster may look like. All I know is Deron Williams and CP3 are the Team USA pgs for the next few Olympics if they want to be, so it’d make sense for both to be on the team (and Chauncey is PERFECT for the Int’l game, but just fucked in the #s game) and there’s not enough spots unless something unexpected happens. Should be interesting…

  24. drewstar says:

out of the 16 players colangelo/coach k is choosing from and this list is the actual 16 player pool theyre choosing from..

(kidd, kobe, lebron, melo, dwight, amare, miller, prince, chandler, redd, deron, billups, wade, bosh, boozer, paul)..i think the 4 that dont make it are ..

billups, chandler (pretty sure he wont make it since bosh and boozer are in the mix this time around), miller, and either wade or prince.

    i see this lineup..
    pg - kidd/paul/deron
    sg - kobe/redd
    sf- lebron/melo
    pf - boozer/bosh
    c- dwight/amare

and either wade or prince depending on wade’s health.

  25. Andrei says:

How easily people forget. I remember a dime post a long time ago, about who is the best ballplayer or something like who would you pick to have the ball in his hands in the last seconds….in dime’s view, wade came out first in both of them. You all forget that Wade was seen as the best player already before the stupid injury to his shoulder. The Grant Hill stuff resemblence is stupid. This guy had on problem with his shoulder and you already take him out? He will come back, and he will have a lot of rings to win. I am a LBJ fan, never liked Kobe, although he is clearly better, but Wade is different. You’ll see. For the US team I would indeed prefer someone else, so that he can fully get back on track. CP3 would be ideal.

  26. Camp Lo says:

    my picks:

    pg - kidd/paul
    sg - kobe/redd/wade
    sf- lebron/melo/prince
    pf - boozer/amare
    c- dwight/chandler

    cuts: (billups, bosh, deron, miller)

  27. sirak says:

can anyone say the new Penny Hardaway?? I really hope not, but it does make you think…

  28. girlybballluver says:

How many games are there to the gold medal?

  29. Celts Fan says:

Andrei, DWade got over-rated. Anyone that would take him over LeBron, Kobe, or Duncan when fully healthy is insane. He’s top 10, but best? Come on. He was never the best. I thought that was insanity at the time and still do.
