All Eyez on Knee

IMAGE DESCRIPTIONPaul Pierce in Dime #5

Any NBA talk yesterday started with Paul Pierce and whether or not his Game 1 knee injury was legit. We can see where those accusing P-Double of faking are coming from; Pierce was hollering in agony and slapping the floor when he first went down, he had to be carried off the court and wheel-chaired to the locker room, but then five minutes later he was skipping out of the tunnel and ready to play. It does smell slightly fugazi, but why would Pierce take himself out of an NBA Finals game when he was just heating up, knowing full-well his team could go into the tank without him and fall into an insurmountable hole, simply to create some drama in a series that creates its own drama? We’re not buying that it was fake. Pierce has been a warrior for the Celtics for a decade, playing through pain and enduring too many losing seasons to play some self-indulgent trick in the biggest moment of his career. If anything, he probably freaked out and overreacted when he thought he’d blown out his knee, then got into the locker room and sucked it up before going back out. If that had been Michael Jordan or Allen Iverson, we’d all (even L.A. fans) be raving about how tough he is … And what if this is actually the opposite of what people are saying, and Pierce is really hurt worse than we know? What is this is another instance of Grant Hill‘s ankle/foot injury from the 2000 playoffs, and by continuing to play Pierce is putting the rest of his career on the line? Unfortunately for the Lakers, Pierce might be reading and hearing all these accusations of faking and preparing to take it out on L.A. for those questioning his integrity … In other injury news, Andrew Bynum is still a month away from jogging. With the way the Lakers got dominated on the boards in Game 1, now is when the Lakers realize how valuable he could be in this series … When the Celtics competed the Big Three with the Kevin Garnett trade, who knew Ray Allen‘s biggest contribution in June would be on the defensive side of the ball? Ray was a big part in the Celtics’ scheme that kept Kobe out of the paint and shooting jumpers, leading to a 9-for-26 night for Mamba. Nothing revolutionary on Ray’s part; he just stayed in front of Kobe and got his hands up to challenge shots. If Ray can keep it up in Game 2 and beyond, Boston is in good shape moving forward … Sam Cassell‘s next stop? It could be Denver. Cassell is a free agent this summer and said he “definitely will talk” to the Nuggets, and said he almost signed with Denver after the Clippers let him go during the season. We all know Sam is going to be a coach somewhere someday, and he’ll have a guaranteed spot on his man George Karl‘s staff (assuming Karl sticks around long enough) whenever he wants one. That would be an ideal situation for Cassell to cut his coaching teeth, as he’d be working with Carmelo Anthony, who respects the hell out of Sam as a Baltimore legend … In case you care who Rick Fox is pulling for, the ex-Celtic and ex-Laker told the Boston Globe, “My loyalties lie with my rings.” Surely a crushing blow for C’s fans … Doug Collins has pulled his name out of the running for the Bulls head coaching job, opening the door for remaining candidates like Dwane Casey and Chuck Person. (“The Rifleman” coaching a team with Ben Gordon on the roster? BG’s right arm might fall off from launching so many threes.) Apparently GM John Paxson had decided on Collins, but team chairman Jerry Reinsdorf hadn’t yet given his approval, so Paxson continued to interview other guys. We’ve already been over this, but why are the Bulls so terrible at handling such business? After firing Scott Skiles mid-season they botched something as simple as naming an interim head coach, then this happened after someone in the organization sprang a leak. What’s gonna happen when it’s time to negotiate with Luol Deng and Gordon? … The Suns haven’t been making a lot of noise with their coaching search, but word is Terry Porter is the front-runner. When Porter (or whoever) takes over, will they run a bastardized version of Mike D’Antoni‘s system — essentially leaving Steve Nash as a player-coach — or will they change things up? And since so many people have called Nash a “system player” for so long, how will a new system impact his effectiveness? Nash is already on the decline; at least that’s what it looked like when Tony Parker was destroying him in the playoffs … Given a second chance to choose between Iverson and Kobe in the ’96 Draft, who do you think the Sixers would take now? Check out our 1996 Draft Do-Over to see where A.I., Kobe, Nash and Steph could have ended up … LeBron‘s LRMR Marketing team signed its latest client: O.J. Mayo, beefing up a lineup that includes ‘Bron and Ted Ginn Jr. of the Miami Dolphins. LeBron and O.J. have been cool since O.J. was coming up as a high schooler in Cincinnati and ‘Bron was in Akron … You know the Sonics can’t stay away from those 7-foot stiffs when it comes to NBA Draft time. Seattle’s pre-draft workout schedule includes appointments with Kosta Koufos, Roy Hibbert and Nathan Jawai, who played in the Australian pro league this season … We’re out like Collins …

Looking at the brawl between the Red Sox and Rays, why is it that in baseball, a sport that isn’t predominantly black, when 2 WHOLE teams stomp each other out its funny to the media and not assault??? That’s crazy that they can just roll each other out like that with little ass repercussions (7 games out of a 162 game season???). God forbid a NBA player (who more than likely is gonna be black) even picks up a hard foul they talkin about suspending him for a couple games. 2 years ago when the Nuggets/Knicks “brawl” (which only consisted of like 7 players, opposed to the 50 that were rockin in the Sox game) the players involved missed like 40 games, of an 82 game season!!! If that aint a double standard I don’t kno what is. Let the white boys get aggressive with each other its some manly aggression, let the brothers romp and they’re animals who need to go to jail! If people think racism still doesn’t exist they got the blindfolds on. Im mad insulted by this. All those coddling ass rules they try to enforce on black MEN making MILLIONS of dollars (”tuck your shirt in”, “put on a collar & jacket”, no profanity in interviews. They even trying to implement a long hair rule in the NFL cuz cats dreads are too long!) is ridiculous. Baseball players are notorious drug abusers, who over indulge in alcohol, drive fast WHILE drunk, womanizers, overly aggressive, dickheads! But I swear theres at least one profanity laced tyrade a week! And they still don’t have rules to abide by. Them arrogant ass white boys get away with everything. John Rocker basically wiped his dick with MLK’s legacy and that mufucka was still getting jobs. I don’t get it man, and as a young black man, that shit is infuriating!!!
    Vent over

  • Duke

Well….duh? I feel you though, but there’s always a double standard.

And I bet you if Bruce Bowen was on the Lakers. Paul Pierce’s ass wouldn’t have been back. He would’ve probably drop kick him or something else extreme since it’s the finals or something.

  • Camp Lo

PP wasn’t faking it. I had a similar injury 7-8 years ago playin’ ball. I felt my knee pop followed by an excruciating pain. The combination of feeling the pop & the pain was scary as shit and when I tried to put any weight on the knee the pain was almost unbearable. I sat against the wall for about 30 min before I tested the leg again and was able to put some weight on it and make it to my car. I thought I dodged a bullet, as the knee was only stiff/sore for about a week instead of the career ending knee injury that flashed before my eyes after my spill.

    Plus, the Truth don’t lie!

  • kb24!

Seriously why do people claim they have the same/similar injury as PP when nobody know’s what he really has anything? They said he refused to take an MRI..so what injury does he have? a FAKE injury! haha. No disrespect Camp Lo. Fake or not. Game 2 on Sunday! go Lakers!

  • Jay

    @kb24!

If you don’t know the feeling of thinking an injury is worse than it is initially, then your idea of exercise probably ends with 20 mins on the Wii. Nobody has any right to accuse Pierce of faking that injury unless they’ve got 10 years of being known as a warrior in the NBA. Plus, Dime brings up a very valid point that PP really had no reason to fake an injury. Dude got hurt, thought it was worse than it was, then came back out to play.

I don’t understand fans sometimes, they’re so blindingly one-sided that they become animals. I was in a restaurant in LA when the injury happened and the place blew up with cheers. An injury to a player, especially one with as much talent and dedication as Pierce, is never something to be cheered. I wouldn’t wish an injury on my most hated athlete.

  • YOUNGFED

Thank you kb24. I was thinking the same thing.

    DIME says:
“We all know Sam is going to be a coach somewhere someday, and he’ll have a guaranteed spot on his man George Karl’s staff”

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!. 10 MORE YEARS OF CASSELL’S UGLY MUG. SAY IT AIN’T SO. LOL

  • K Dizzle

Slow down, Jay. If Kobe had gone down with a knee “injury”, Celtic Nation would be celebratin too so whatever. I hope P Double is healthy (and i’m hearin Perkins ain’t) so there ain’t no excuses when LA evens up on sunday

  • K Dizzle

my bad for forgettin but all props to whoever decided on Tupac for today’s smack title

  • YOUNGFED

BTW DIME The Wings Parade was off the hook. Even though I kinda got mad when they booed the Mayor. WTF?

TI and Rick Ross concert is today so when I go I probably should where my vest. lol

  • josh

Nathan Jawai is a beast. he will be a sleeper in the draft.

  • the_don_mega

does saying a player faked an injury in taking your team down make the pain of defeat that less painful? aint a fan of both teams, but cmon… do we all really need this much talk about this stuff? lets just watch these two teams lay it all out on the court. lakers aint complainin’ about it… so be it.

  • sans

I like Kostas in a Cavs uniform, but anyone the Sonics grab is gonna stiffen right up. Who works with there big men there, Big Country Bryan Reeves? Seriously, they’ll end up giving him a spot on the bench in OKC for sentimentality’s sake.

  • Logan

If you’ve played ball for any amount of time at all, then you know what it feels like when you roll your ankle pretty bad… When it first happens you would swear that its broken, but give it 5 minutes, lace up your shoe a little tighter and you’re good to go. I’m sure this was pretty similar.

But there is no excuse for Pierce getting cradled by his teammates. He should have acted like anyone else and used his teammates like crutches – that was the weakest part.

Kobe is gonna get his. That’s why they play 7 games. Lakers take game 2 in a close one.

    LL

  • DaPro

We all bitched up on an injury b4 and 5 minutes later or less was back on the court

Fed, fam I know you rolled or sprained something and thought it was a wrap

  • srb

Paul Pierce is the best player to ever touch a basketball

  • SvCat

Did anyone see P-Double’s face when he got scratched by one of the Lakers? He was grimacing and rubbing his chest like he got stabbed with a pencil…maybe he was having flashbacks from the club incident…anyway I’ve seen some people over-react to pain and then are fine within a few minutes. I don’t think he was faking it, I think for a moment he seriously thought he was hurt until he got in the tunnel and realized he was acting like a lil’ bit&%.

  • Illmatic

    @KDizzle

Much respect man. Anybody who’s still down with Tupac is aight in my book.

  • YOUNGFED

@DaPro you already know how I feel about Pierce. Pierce is Soft and I wouldn’t ain’t like a punk like he did. lol

  • Big Sneezy

John Paxson is a 5-foot stiff.

  • Ocka

Jawai will be alright. will go late to a contender and get minutes in the playoffs

@Youngfed — They booed Kwame Kilpatrick? Or is there a new mayor?

  • YOUNGFED

They were booing Kwame, I mean come on 75% percent of the people who booed don’t even live here. Also this was supposed to be a day of celebration. But what the Heck I partied like a rock star and I don’t even watch Hockey. I’ll let you know How the TI Ricky Ross concert is Tommorow even though I’m not to pumped about it.

Check out the Freep.com or Detnews.com for picks and more coverage on the parade and how the Did my boy Kwame.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Austin Burton

I don’t know the whole story, but Kwame’s been going through some stuff, hasn’t he?

  • YOUNGFED

Yeah They kinda hatin’ on him right know and his case ain’t looking to good but will see. The city is still backing him and so am I. I mean he’d lied under oath but what do you expect when you ask a man in front of everyone if he slept with another woman knowing he’s married. He’s the best thing thats happen to this city, so in the end that’s all that matters to me.

  • Dave

    Youngfed…

I’m the first to tell someone who doesn’t like what a musician or tv or radio personality has to say to just not listen/watch/tune in, etc…. but I have to call you out. You’re ignorant. All you do is hate (with horrible grammar, by the way), and your jokes aren’t funny. When somebody disagrees with you, you invariably just respond with profanity about you’re accuser being an internet bitch or whatever. Do you know the definition of irony? Probably not. While I’ve been reading smack since the days of hoopstv.com, I’ve rarely felt the need to post a comment, but you’ve been drivig me crazy recently. I held off throughout the pistons series, but there is no reason for your PP hatred, aside from the fact that he’s more successful and more well liked than you.

    C’mon youngfed. Grow up.

  • word

fugazi? yall use some weird ass terms

on the real tho why did collins fall back on the bulls job? he would’ve been a good look. well good luck to them paxson better make the right moves or i hope his ass gets fired he deserves it after last season

  • http://www.dimemag.com Austin Burton

@Yoooo — I agree with you. Baseball “brawls” (which are usually just guys standing around looking menacingly at each other) are given a mostly positive/light-hearted view. It’s either “something that brings the team together.” And most brawls are started because a pitcher threw at someone’s head, which is seen as “protecting your teammate.” Do the same views apply to basketball, football or other sports more populated by Black players? Of course not. A brawl or even a minor fight is met with harsh punishment, and intentional fouls (equivalent of throwing a baseball at someone) aren’t seen positively unless you’re Kevin McHale.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Austin Burton

@word — I think Collins saw that Reinsdorf was hesitant to hire him, so rather than be told “We don’t want you,” he pulled out. Kind of like quitting before you get fired.

  • http://myspace.com/bigfreeze101 Big Freeze

    @ Yooooo

You’re right, there is a double standard regarding fighting in the NBA compared to other white dominated sports like MLB and NHL. The Pistons-Pacers brawl a few years ago changed everything in the NBA. Before that, fighting in a game would only get a player a game or two suspension. But after that moment in time when Ron Artest punched the fan and started a fans vs players brawl, it is not going to be tolerated. It sucks, but you can thank the shitty fan(s) in Detroit and/or Ron Artest for making fighting in the NBA so unacceptable.

  • knocks

This “double standard” argument has been brought up countless times before. And somehow, I don’t feel like it will be the last. Yah, yah, yah…white musicians can get a sold out concert going with crazy mosh-pit stuff going on, and it’s all good….if a hip-hop thing gets sold out, you get a minor scuffle going, the po-po comes to shut the whole thing down. We heard this all before.

All I can say is, if you don’t like it, DO something about it. Venting about it on the Dime smack boards won’t get you nothing. This double standard is a perception–a perception by sports fans, a perception by whites, a perception by American society as a whole. This double standard won’t change on its own. I won’t take the bait here and get into an argument of how this all started (Google it and I’m sure you’ll find your Mark).

You don’t like it, DO something. Do you vote? Good. Get your boys to vote as well. Do you better your community? Inspire others to better theirs? Seems like it’s a big task? It is.

But hey, you’ll do a lot more to reverse this double-standard than by just bitching about it.

    Peace.

    And P.S.: Celtics in 6.

  • kb24!

Man ok maybe it wasn’t fake..but dude sure fuckin blew it up like he’s dying or something..If PP was so tough…he would have tried to walk it off to the tunnel by himself instead getting carried off in a wheel chair. then magically came out skipping like a little girl out the tunnel and played good like nothing happened.

  • for real

slow fuckin’ day on the posts

    all I gotsta say is……….

Celtics bringin’ it tomorrow and bustin the Lakers ASS – again

  • sirak

yeah i reckon some people have got it right – some wrong. my 2 cents is PP went down and hurt his knee, probably had never felt that sensation in is knee before and waay over-reacted. seriously it was like he’d been shot. tough? nah, dude has been fortunate not to get injured, wince carter would have done the same. they’d never miss a chance to get a standing O from the croud by making a dramatic return to the floor. PP should have just said – yeah i freaked out… it’s all good – bit sore, lets forget it and continue the rest of the series. like i said, just my 2 cents.

  • YOUNGFED
