Forget ‘Melo - The Pistons Need Z-Bo
The Detroit Free-Press’ Drew Sharp is looking for a bargain. And right now, Zach Randolph can be had on the cheap. Even though Z-Bo is a 20/10 guy, he and Mike D’Antoni’s “7 Seconds or Less” system appear to be oil and water. So would Joe D and Detroit’s management be better off adding Randolph to their front lines than selling the farm to get Carmelo Anthony or Tracy McGrady to the Palace?
The New York Knicks power forward fits the profile that Joe Dumars defined as prerequisites for a trade. Randolph is an impact player. He’ll definitely fill a void, providing a consistent low-post offensive presence.
But the most intriguing aspect of courting Randolph is that it might not cost the Pistons as much as trying to get Carmelo Anthony or Tracy McGrady.
The Pistons would be a good spot for Randolph, who’s still battling issues with immaturity. He’s not a leader. He remains a follower.
Getting maximum production from him on the court and respectable conduct off the court are incumbent upon placing him on a team with strong positive influences in the locker room, on the coaching staff and in the front office.

I don’t think joe D is trading wallace for for Z-bo. Dude is good but he gets into too much trouble. Is he really an upgrade over wallace/Mcdyess? Defensively he’s giving up 20 and 10 too!

I’d do it. Zach will rebound and take the ball into the paint, which Rasheed doesn’t do. Did Z-Bo get into any trouble this past season when he lived in New York? No. With him it’s all about the people he’s surrounding himself with, and clearly he made some changes after leaving Portland. (And I’ve noticed how every time he goes back to Portland he gets into some ish.)

@doc
hey anything to get him out NY.. but personally I would rather see them make a bigger attempt to get rid of Curry. I can live with Randolph.. As long as Curry is starting I will not have any faith in the Knicks..(but i will always rep)

@fiyaman — You really like David Lee at PF more than Zach?

Celts Fan says:
ya, I was shocked he didn’t get into trouble in NYC either AB, but guess the kid’s maturing. Getting him means Rasheed can just float around the perimeter and it’s not as damaging to the team/post game…

Zach says:
I didn’t see anywhere that it said that Sheed would be shipped out. I think Z-Bo would work but Sheed would have to be gone. I don’t think that the strong locker room atmoshere would help him that much if Sheed is still there. I don’t think Dumars would be willing to take on that bad contract though. I bet he waits until the Knicks get fed up and buy him out and then we may be in sweepstakes. But 3 years/ $48 million Joe D is smarter than that

if the pistons trade sheed for randolph, they will have no interior defense at all. i feel confident that rasheed will do as good of a job on defense against kg, duncan, or any other big in the league, and that is huge for a team like the pistons.
unless amir suddenly develops into a big time defender next season, i say keep rasheed for 1 more year and let him mentor amir for one more year and let him take over the starting lineup if sheed leaves in free agency. please dont take on zach randolphs contract.
give curry a chance to work with sheed. sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed

Where is this McGrady rumor coming from? The possible trades with Denver got a few articles, but I haven’t seen anything about the Rockets giving up on Tracy.

@austin
where did I say I prefer Lee over Randolph? I dont know how u came to that..
If ur talkn about lee starting in ZBO goes I assumed they wud get Rasheed and I wud take sheed only b/c his contract is soon up.. As a Knicks fan the only thing I think is good for us is rebuilding. I mean real rebuilding (not the pat riley style of getting avet to add) we need to start from scratch get some young players and build on that. If it takes a few yrs I can live with that. What i dont want is for us to try to WIN NOW (get some vets and try to win with them) no we need to get OJ MAyo (i know aint gonna happen) but u get my dirft.. dumpp salaries and rebuild..
I think Lee is gd but also overrated. I would trade him for a ron artest (low contract and young) in my sleep..Curry is the 1st person that has to go..We are better with ZBO than with fatassbabycurry..

Austin Burton says:
@fiyaman — You said “Anything to get [Zach] out of NY.” So if by “anything” you meant a trade that doesn’t necessarily involve another PF, that led me to believe you’d rather have David Lee at the four than Zach, as he is Zach’s current backup. My bad for being presumptuous.

z-bo gives up waaaaaaay too much on the defensive side. in order for it to work he has go to shed some pounds and work tremendously on his defensive game. defensively it could work cuz his game is close to the basket and he doesn’t settle for threes

Austin Burton says:
I think with Maxiell, McDyess and Theo Ratliff — and if the Pistons maybe got another defensive-minded big in the Draft — they could cover for Zach’s lack of defense. I think a bigger issue would be his problems passing out of double-teams.

Myrie says:
Zach Randolph is underrated. He is still a quality impact player.
But he will NOT take the ball into the paint as much as people think. He’s more like Kevin Garnet.
He’ll go inside a FEW times per game, but most of his offensive damage will be with the perimete jump shot.

guess who else can be had for “cheap”: hakeem olajuwon. just because someone can be had for “cheap” doesn’t mean it’s the right move. And besides, I wouldn’t call the annual salary that Z-Bo gets “cheap”. The problem with Z-Bo is not his defense or his lack of athletic ability; it’s the fact that he’s a sulking loser. The only time he has been a difference maker is when his team is 20 games below .500. Look at the blazers, they got better this year swapping him for channing frye. I even have video evidence.

@Myrie — Zach gets a lot of his buckets in the paint. He doesn’t take nearly as many outside jumpers as KG or Rasheed.

D'Antonio says:
A trade that would work:
Z-Bo for Sheed + Draft pick swap
1. Detroit then drafts the other Randolph with the Knick’s pick (the “Randolph brothers” would be the “Wallace brothers” 2.0). Detroit gets to shake things up and Chauncey and the others will make Z-Bo wall straight.
2. NY gets rid of a horrendous contract (which is Walsh’s #1 objective) and manages to improve the team.
It’s tough to give away the pick, but I really don’t see anyone worth drafting…

Dagomar says:
Since this is all about acquiring players I’ll throw in a shopping analogy.
The Pistons getting Randolph instead of, say, Melo would be like a guy who buys 20 dollar running shoes and thinks he’s saved a hundred bucks. Then the shoes fall apart in a week. You don’t build a champion on the cheap.

I would give anything for the Cavs to grab Randolph. Might keep Bron from leaving though, and that is what the Knicks want most.
