The Next Carmelo Anthony?

IMAGE DESCRIPTIONJordan Hamilton (photo. Kelly Kline)

Over on HighSchoolHoop.com we ranked the top small forwards in the senior class of 2009. Leading the pack is Jordan Hamilton (Dime #36) from Dominguez H.S. in Compton, Calif., the latest star in a line that includes Tyson Chandler, Tayshaun Prince, Bobby Jones, Kenny Brunner (“Bad Santa” from the AND 1 Mix Tape Tour) and Arizona-bound ’08 All-American Brandon Jennings, who spent two years at Dominguez before transferring to Oak Hill Academy.

Hamilton averaged 27.6 points and 11.1 rebounds as a junior last season, leading the Dons to sectional and regional championships before a 2nd-place finish at state. He’s a pure scorer with NBA range on his three who’s often compared to Carmelo Anthony. Hamilton is looking at schools like Texas, UConn, Cal, N.C. State and Arizona. Behind him on our small forward ranking are Minnesota recruit Royce White, Arkansas-bound Marshawn Powell, and Georgetown commit Hollis Thompson.

this is pure bullshit. 2 days ago…there was a next derrick rose and today a next carmelo anthony?

too much outrageous comparisons. yall need to slow down on that.

btw….carmelo anthony is the most OVERrated playere in the nba

    Hence the question mark…

Since when was a guy who averages 25 ppg and 7 rpg ovverrated? Melo can’t kill you in the post, off the dribble, dot you wit J’s, dude is an offensive force. Dude JUST turned 24, he gotta grow into a cluth player.Lebron did carry the cavs past the first round,to the finals even pretty much by himself, but lebron plays a different style of ball. His style of ball gets everyone involved and he’s pretty much the point guard running the show. That’s like expecting a Timmy duncan to carry the spurs past ANY round without a Tony parker.
Carmelo is FAR from overrated, immature, YES, overrated, NAH!

And comparisons have ALWAYS been measures of greatness. They said Micheal was the next Dr. J when he came in the league based on Jordans dunking ability. That’s just the way it is. Comparisons are merely a measuring stick to evaluate talent. They ain’t sayin this person or that person is actually going to be the next whoever, just asking the question through comparative analysis. (is this player gonna live up to the hype?)

    ur punk bitch ass again?
damn…is there no wnba site for you to comment on? lame ass nigg.

who cares if carmelo is 24?..that sucka punk has been in the league for 5yrs…how much time does he need to prove his full potential?…ELEVEN?
…and if so, then there is no damn need to be comparing anyone to him.
shit…he is nothing more than the new glenn robinson (theres a comparison for ya)

…and dime was comparing a junior pg to derrick rose. c’mon dogg…even you gotta agree its to early to compare anyone to derrick rose.
derrick rose looks nothing more than stephon marbury of 1995-1996 (there…another comp for ya)

comparison have come up lame. they USED to be used to measure greatness. now every damn bum is being compared to a great.
    poor measurement.

  6. Austin Burton says:

@yall — Michael Jordan didn’t reach his “full potential” until he was 28, 29 years old.

And I think when you’re talking about high schoolers, comparisons are always made with a “best-case scenario” suggestion.

  7. yallallreadyknow says:

correction…jordan reached his full potential at 25yrs old. and he maintainted it thru two retirements.

..interview craig ehlo and ask him if you doubt it

    ..and please….
why use michael jordan of all people in a comparison? as if any new comer can be compared to money mike in any REAL way

how long have you been writing?
have you reached ur full potential? if not, what is lacking? if you have, how long did it take?

  9. Austin Burton says:

If you want to go by stats, then sure, MJ was 25 when he averaged 32-8-8 and that was his best all-around statistical season. But I think even Jordan would tell you that he didn’t hit his real peak until he won a championship. That was around the time he mastered his outside jumper, too.

Me, I’ve been writing seriously since high school, professionally since college. Now I’m 26. Have I reached my full potential? Hell no. And that’s part of what pushes me, trying to be better every day and trying to master what parts of my game are lacking.

  10. Remy Nguyen says:

I concur, Melo is the most overrated playe in the L.

Melo is star but he is not a superstar — Charles Barkley, 2008.

    austin

    i respect your answer.
    keep up the good writing…
…its a major reason we visit here daily

    @yallallreadyknow

You know homey I said I wasn’t gone insult you again, cause there’s just a lameness in talking crazy over the internet to a dude I ain’t ever gone see. So I’m a let that go

Glenn robinson was a servicable small forwarrd for many years dude. No 1 man can carry a team! Glenn averaged 20 a game a 6 rebounds a game for 8 years!! And you makin it seem like he was a bum! Nah!
And there may not be a comparison to MJ now, but eventually, like all thrones, his will be superceded also. I also agree with Austin. Mike probably would have said he didn’t reach his FULL potential until he won a champsionship, because that’s all ANY player worth his jersey wants.
Comparisons also give players a place to reach torwards. I’m sure Jordan wanted to be greated than Oscar Robertson, Pete maravich, anybody who ever played the game. Like I said, MJ was compared to Dr. J for years, I’m sure him wanting to be better than Dr. J or anyone he was compared to, made him work that much harder on his game everyday!
Melo will grow, and so will these high school players they are evaluating, and who cares if they don’t live up to a comparison? All players grow into their OWN legacy, the comparison is just for the critics and the drive of a player in my opinion.

  13. DaPro says:

Melo is the best pure scorer in the L
His game has improved every year but he regresses during the season
He takes bad shots and his all around game needs some refinement but he’s learning

Saying all that he still is a top 5 scorer in the league

  14. yallallreadyknow says:

    chuck

    i can respect ur answer.

    ..now fuck off

  15. tealish says:

Melo isn’t the best at anything. He isn’t even the top 10 player everyone thinks he is. Overrated is the correct assessment. Underachiever is another. Carmelo will never be a winner from what we’ve seen so far.

When we talk about reaching one’s potential, there must be good signs that let us assume this possibility. With Michael, before he won his first chip, I wouldn’t say he was at his peak either. But would anyone dare call him anything but a ‘winner’? The same cannot be said about Melo.

Now granted, he might suddenly change his attitude and approach to his game. But that’s highly unlikely. I can probably name around 15 or more players in the L I’d rather take on my team than him. And that’s something that will most likely stay true throughout his career.

  16. Cee says:

You’re calling ‘Melo overrated??? At least he isn’t called an instant mvp because he can score a lot (Lebron and Kobe)not THATS “overrated”.
