Welcome back home, DerrickIf you were with us live, we broke down the first round pick-by-pick with instant analysis. We’ll be sorting through the 2nd round selects and will keep you up on everything in Smack and on Dimemag.com all day tomorrow.
2008 NBA Draft
30. BOSTON: J.R. Giddens, SG - Some people have called him one of the 20 best players in the draft, however “character issues” forced him to drop. Giddens went to Kansas originally before transferring to New Mexico. He’s a sick athlete with a solid jimmy, but will have a hard time to see the parquet floor in Beantown.
* Even though Rajon Rondo gave a strong showing in the Finals, why would the Celtics pass up Mario Chalmers at this point? Like Rondo, he excels on the defensive side of the floor. He broke Darnell Valentine’s 1982 record of 92 steals in a season during his sophomore campaign when he swiped 97. During Chalmers’ junior year, he took 97 again. He would have been a perfect backup.
29. DETROIT: D.J. White, PF - Year after year, Joe Dumars proves that he can draft. With talk for the last couple of weeks that the Pistons are ready to part ways with Rasheed Wallace, D.J. White is a big body who can give them consistent low-block scoring that they get from ‘Sheed when he feels like it. White is a better basketball player than Amir Johnson already.
28. MEMPHIS: Donte Greene, SF - Now that it’s been determined, Grizzlies fans can find comfort knowing that the Lakers had to give up the draft rights to Donte Greene in addition to Crittenton, Kwame, Aaron McKie, Marc Gasol, and some ‘10 pick to get Pau Gasol.
* Memphis is a pretty good place for Greene to continue developing - he’ll really benefit from the tutelage of Mike Miller and Rudy Gay.
27. NEW ORLEANS: Darrell Arthur, PF - When David West was writhing on the ground in back pain in the playoffs, Byron Scott could only pull Melvin Ely off his bench. Grabbing Arthur at this stage, even with whatever kidney problems have arisen, is a great pick for the Hornets.
26. SAN ANTONIO: George Hill, PG - Leave it to the Spurs to pick the guy with the most boring name in the draft. Odds are you’ve never heard of or seen Hill play. So, HERE you go.
25. HOUSTON: Nicolas Batum, SF - We thought that they should go with a big man here, namely DeAndre Jordan, given Yao’s chronic health issues and Dike’s age. That being said, Batum could be a very good player some day, but we can’t see where he fits into the plan with McGrady and Battier locking down the small forward slot. He doesn’t have the shooting range to slide over to the two.
24. SEATTLE: Serge Ibaka, PF - After his agent told every NBA team that Serge was likely staying in Spain until 2011, we figured no one would take him in the first round. This is a good gamble for the Sonics, but they may have jumped the gun considering they have the 32nd pick and no one was probably taking Ibaka in the first round. The kid has skills, ridiculous hops and is getting better every day, but hopefully the Sonics didn’t set themselves up to get Fran Vasquez‘d.
23. UTAH: Kosta Koufos, C - If Mehmet Okur can mentor him, Koufos could be his protege. Koufos has got to be happy that he’s going to a team with Carlos Boozer and Paul Millsap so that he can linger on the perimeter while other guys get their hands dirty on the glass. This is a great fit.
22. ORLANDO: Courtney Lee, SG - We were expecting to see Chris Douglas-Roberts here, as he’s an excellent choice for Orlando’s open system. But Lee isn’t a bad pick - he’s ridiculously athletic as he proved when Western Kentucky took down Drake and San Diego in the first two rounds of the Dance. As of right now, Lee is the quickest guy on the bounce of anyone on Orlando’s roster. That could very well set up Rashard Lewis, Keith Bogans and Hedo Turkoglu for open treys.
*** [PROPOSED] PACERS/BLAZERS Trade ***
Here’s what’s on the table:
* Indiana gets: Josh McRoberts, Jarrett Jack, and Brandon Rush
* Portland gets: Ike Diogu and Jerryd Bayless
This deal sounds great for the Blazers. Even though Bayless never actually worked out for them, they essentially moved up two spots and grabbed a top five talent. Now they can go Bayless, Fernandez, Roy, Aldridge and Oden as their starting five. That’s tough.
The Pacers on the other hand have three NBA backups at point with Jack, Ford and Tinsley. We do, however, like the idea of Rush playing alongside Danny Granger - they both have a similar smooth style.
******
21. NEW JERSEY: Ryan Anderson, SF/PF - The Nets realllly wanted Danilo Gallinari. They wanted him so badly, they took the American version. Somebody recently said that if Anderson were from overseas, he’d be a top 10 pick without question. He can rain from 18-22 feet, has a full complement of post moves, and handles the rock well for a big man.
20. CHARLOTTE: Alexis Ajinca, PF/C - Ajinca is the first guy to come out of the stands to shake Stern’s hand. On some YouTube clips, Ajinca looks like skin and bones blocking the shots of Frenchmen who are about a foot shorter than he. If he’s going to make any sort of impact this year, he needs to add about 25 pounds. He did say that he’s gained just that much over the last year, and hopes to do the same during his first year in the League.
19. CLEVELAND: J.J. Hickson, PF/C - We heard that Cleveland loved him, so this is kind of expected even if it seems a little high. He’s athletic and incredibly tough, but we don’t know whether he has enough game to hold onto the zip-line passes from King James.
* Hickson could step in nicely for Joe Smith once his contract expires after the ‘08-09 season.
18. WASHINGTON: JaVale McGee, C - The Brandon Haywood era is something that the Wizards have been trying to rid themselves of for a while. McGee has all the physical tools to make that happen, but he hasn’t really put it together despite playing in the mid-majority WAC.
17. TORONTO (choosing for INDIANA): Roy Hibbert, C - The J.O. trade doesn’t become official until July 9th, so the Raptors were picking for the Pacers here. Hibbert makes sense in Indiana, as the only real big man left on their roster without O’Neal is Jeff Foster. But this is a pretty serious change of pace - when O’Neal was healthy, he’s athletic and dynamic. Hibbert, not so much.
16. PHILADELPHIA: Marreese Speights, PF - He’s got the tools to be a great offensive player. While Joe Alexander wowed everybody in his workouts, Speights wasn’t far behind in his individual evals. He has a “beautiful” hook shot and an “even prettier” turn-around jumper. However, Speights’ level of intensity during the three-on-three workouts was abysmal at times, which reflected a general criticism of his tendency to take some plays off, or even entire games off.
15. PHOENIX: Robin Lopez, C - With Terry Porter coming in as the coach, we aren’t sure how the Suns are going to play. And this pick doesn’t do much to clarify that. Consensus on the Shaq trade was that the Suns needed someone to body up Tim Duncan. Is this their way to get six more fouls on the Big Fundamental?
* Doesn’t Phoenix still need a small forward desperately? Sure there are still questions about exactly what Donte Greene brings to the table, but he seems like a much better fit. He can shoot from deep in transition and has great size for a three.
14. GOLDEN STATE: Anthony Randolph, SF - A good shot-blocker who has all the tools to be a great 1-on-1 defender, and Lord knows the Warriors need defense. Randolph is an athletic guy who fits into Nellie-ball because he can play multiple positions, however he isn’t the shooter you usually see GS go with.
13. PORTLAND: Brandon Rush, SG/SF - In need of a shooter because Martell Webster hasn’t worked out as planned, the selection of Rush gives the Blazers even more versatility in the backcourt, allowing Brandon Roy to play the point at times. Also, don’t forget Rudy Fernandez is on the way.
* We don’t know who they’re going to start in the backcourt, but a trio of Roy, Fernandez and Rush complements the LaMarcus Aldridge/Greg Oden frontcourt. If Fernandez can play any point, this team is going to be official.
12. SACRAMENTO: Jason Thompson, PF - This is where Anthony Randolph was supposed to go. Clearly the Kings agree with what we said the other day: that “it should be Thompson, not Randolph who is hanging around the back of the lottery.”
* For those of you who don’t know much about Thompson, he’s a 6-11 PF originally from Camden, N.J. who went for 20/10 for two straight years at Rider University. The most exciting thing about him is not only that he’s still getting better by all accounts, but that he’s a great guy who works his tail off.
11. INDIANA: Jerryd Bayless, PG/SG - For a team that just nabbed T.J. Ford in a deal for Jermaine O’Neal, the Pacers simply could not pass up a talent like Bayless at No. 11. He’ll offer the starkest contrast to Jamaal Tinsley in just about every way possible - he’s uptempo all the time and a consummate professional.
10. NEW JERSEY: Brook Lopez, C - How does Vince Carter feel about this pick? For a team that is completely devoid of low-post scoring, Lopez is the best option on the board at this juncture. He’s over 7-feet and demonstrated some touch around the basket. But could he end up as the Nets’ latest attempt at a low-block standout who struggles on offense at the next level(Sean Williams, Boone)?
9. CHARLOTTE: D.J. Augustin, PG - No one saw this coming. Everyone thought that the Bobcats were going to go with someone to complement Emeka Okafor on the front lines. In fact, the camera panned right to a seemingly teary-eyed Brook Lopez right after the selection. Augustin’s good, but we think the recent emphasis on point guard play (thanks, CP3) bumped him up a few spots.
8. MILWAUKEE: Joe Alexander, SF - The Bucks just cleared up their ‘tweener forward logjam with the Jefferson/Yi trade, and now they bring in another small forward? Joe Deliverance has all the athleticism in the world and seems like the one guy who would actually like living in Milwaukee.
* If the Bucks believe in Alexander as a three of the future, would they consider moving RJ, a proven stud who has a ton of value to many teams (Lakers, Suns, Portland), for some more picks and some talent at other pressing positions like power forward.
7. LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS: Eric Gordon, SG - The Clippers were willing to trade up three spots to take him, so they’ve got to be elated that they got their guy without having to give anything up. Gordon envisions himself more as a point guard than a shooting guard, which the Clips must believe in, but don’t sleep on him as a shooter. He’s much taller than some services have him listed - he’s been labeled 6-2, but after seeing him around for the last couple of days, he’s at least 6-4. He’s closer to Beasley’s height than anyone would have thought two weeks ago.
* Is Gordon enough to lure Elton Brand back to the Clippers? He said that he didn’t want to discuss any contract negotiations with the team until the draft was over.
6. NEW YORK: Danilo Gallinari, SF/PF - Goodness gracious, the boos are deafening. Gallinari legitimately can’t have a conversation with Stephen A. because the Knicks fans are so intent on booing. But when he’s busting his ass on a nightly basis, playing tough Knicks-style ball, the fans will make up for their actions tonight.
* Gallinari provides D’Antoni with a versatile piece, who might already be the best shooter on their roster.
5. MEMPHIS: Kevin Love, PF - As Kevin Love hugged three-quarters of the green room, David Stern stood, mean-mugging as he waited to finally shake the young Wes Unseld’s hand.
* Sitting with Stephen A., Love looks absolutely elated to be picked by the Grizzlies. When is the last time that someone looked so happy to go to Memphis? The front court of Darko and Kwame needed to be addressed even if Love isn’t the fifth best player on many people’s boards.
4. SEATTLE : Russell Westbrook, PG/SG - Kevin Durant, who is sitting in the second row behind the green room, just stood up and applauded when Stern announced that his Sonics grabbed Westbrook a couple of picks higher than most thought. Dime’s Seattle contingent is quite satisfied (and relieved that it wasn’t a Lopez) with the Sonics’ selection.
* Westbrook is a much better passer than people think. Everyone knows that he’s a stupid athlete who can lock up anyone - he was the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year. But during the time that he started at point in Darren Collison’s stead at UCLA, Westbrook was leading the Pac-10 in assists. A Westbrook, Durant, Green 1-2-3 punch sounds pretty nice.
3. MINNESOTA: O.J. Mayo, PG/SG - The Knicks fans are pissed. We’d heard a couple strong O.J. chants twenty minutes before the draft started. Maybe if Brook Lopez had never done an individual workout and remained a mystery, we could have seen him come off the board here. But instead, the Wolves went with the player they believed was the best available - even if he plays the same position as one of their young talents - Randy Foye.
* O.J. is NBA ready as a playmaker, able to create shots for himself off the dribble and without the ball. He and Al Jefferson are two strong pieces as the cornerstones for Minny’s future.
2. MIAMI: Michael Beasley, PF - Was it a hoax the whole time? The media was buzzing all afternoon with news that the Heat were doing everything in their power to move out of this spot. There’s still a chance that Beasley could be wearing another cap by the time the night is over, but for now Miami fans should be ecstatic. A starting lineup Jason Williams, Dwyane Wade, Shawn Marion, Michael Beasley, and Mark Blount (with Udonis Haslem coming off the bench) is one player away from tops in the East.
* Pat Riley said that he wanted to make an astronomical leap like what Danny Ainge and the Celts pulled last year. They don’t need to be wheeling and dealing to make that happen.
1. CHICAGO: Derrick Rose, PG - John Paxson needed to find a way to get easy buckets for a team that pulls from too far out, too often. Rose will be able to get easy buckets for himself with his freakish athleticism, and most importantly, will help to maximize the productivity (and easy scores) for those around him.

ha yeah the celts did good w/ walker… he’ll be a stud. I liked portlands draft too, that dorsey pick was real resourceful. they’re playing it like baseball and stockpiling young talent to bring up in a farm-system type environment.
its too bad for rose and beasley that greg oxen has ROY all but locked up. I heard he’s bulked up like crazy and just murders dogs in the post. add that to to the crazy atheticism and Russell-esque defense that made him the top pick last year, and you have yourself a solid, all-star center. I hope it works out for the kid, he deserves it. you can tell he has a KG-esque love n respect for the game.

Don’t know why the Knick fans were booing. Galinari sounds like Chris Mullin to me - Good shooter, can put ball on the floor, passes, not athletic, tough, high basketball IQ. Maybe Mike D. will implement RUN-DMC with Danilo, Marbury & Crawford. We can still try to move Z-Bo or Curry to get a shot-blocker (maybe free agent pool). David Lee could have screwed himself out of serious money. If the Knicks aren’t going to committ to him financially long term (evident by proposed trade) he should have went to Memphis and had his agent negotiate a big bucks extension striking while the iron is hot. Say he gets exposed under Mike D.’s system. Also, DG probably has the least amount of pressure on him of the top ten picks (certainly the top six).

@ Dime Mag (respectfully of course)
With reference to the Westbrook description: “stupid athlete” I know the intention, but those two words together have a deeper negative connotation and we probably want to stay away from unless we are describing (Ryan Leaf, JR Smith, Sprewell, PacMan Jones - guys who do more to destroy their opportunities, than they do to be more productive)
Just my two cent…

Nathan post 2, its funny you say that. As I was watching the draft my sister asked if Beasley was Will Smith and I just laughed. They are both pretty funny i spose.
