Putting a squad together because they are per say “better” is what got Team USA in trouble last time around. To use that as the base of reasoning is also saying that Team Argentina had better players than Team USA when they won the gold in the last olympics and USA walked away with a bronze.
Food for thought.

Exactly ya’ll. But Kobe was on the team during the trials, and so was Kidd. Kobe shot the talent through the roof to almost untouchable. Kidd shot the chemistry through the roof because he’s Kidd. In Euro style ball, chemistry has proven to be everything. They both have experience under their belts, which is why trying to keep the team intact after the trials should be the highest priority.

Chuck...Haters come in all fashions and forms so bear arms says:
Kobe
Lebron- best small forward in the game
Anthony- Always plays great in the olympics
Stoudamire -post scoring machine
Howard- beast inside
Paul- Almost MVP
Deron Williams- beasted just about every point gaurd this year
Chandler- blocks lots of shots and grabs boards
Mike Miller- gotta spread the defense with that J
kevin garnett- defensive player of the year and no one named him?
The other two slots are up for grabs in my opinion. You could go with a shooter, a banger, a shot blocker, a defender. These two positions are where you feel the team lacks something
NO D-WADE, he was hurt ALL SEASON, and we don’t know what he can do, I doubt he’s a 100%
Paul Peirce???? NAW, Not a strong enough defender, he only plays one side of the floor imo
I’m assuming the person who named Micheal Redd did so because of shooting. He only shot 36% percent from beyond, there were A LOT of players that blew him out the water this year as far as shooting
Bosh I like, he would be considered
Joe johnson also, he balled this year
battier? GTFOH
Prince and jamison????? Don’t know about those two (possible I guess, but not strong ones.)

Best athlete is probably the equivalent to MVP. Which I can’t argue the fact that Kidd won it. But Kobe deserves credit in that aspect as well, he was the best defender.

Sasha V, Vlad Rad, Memo, AK47, Manu, Tony Parker, Peja, Yao, Nash, Barbosa, Bell, Dirk — actually, that team would win some games.
PG: Kidd (no way they don’t pick him), CP (for the fast ones), Deron (for the big ones, plus he can play SG and hit the trey)
SG: Kobe (duh.), Joe Johnson (ask Boston)
SF: Melo (to stop the other team from snitching), Tay (but I don’t know how much respect he’ll get from the refs just because he plays for detroit, like the NBA refs do)
PF: LeBron (too strong and fast), Jamison (built for the international game — at least on offense)
C: Dwight (china needs to see a proper souljaboy), CB4 (if only for his neck length)
for the final spot I think i’m going with Amare over Elton (injury?) or Booz. Here’s the deal on boozer, I don’t know how eligible he really is. Why? Because not just being named is good enough, you had to play. Last season he didn’t play because of his sons’ health, and I think he was injured the previous summer. I could be wrong though.
Good Lamar should get a look too . . . he has all the skills to dominate in intn’l comp.

weng santos says:
D-Wade gets a lot of travels in FIBA competition. His game is for the flash style of the NBA, not the basics of international ball.
Redd shot 36% last season because he had to create his own shot on the gadawful bucks. But stick him in the wing, get the others to draw the D and get him an open shot off the pass? Easiest buckets he’ll ever get.
Pierce is a warrior, and he hates to lose. Remember 2002. Redemption is now.
Melo is a pure scorer no matter what rules we use. FIBA, NBA, NCAA, etc; he just has that gift of being able to put the ball in the hole.
Off the court, Melo’s errors are more due to youth and are correctable. I don’t know why anyone would feel embarassed having him on the team. Why? Kobe has a rape indictment, Pierce almost got stabbed in the head, LeBron was driving a hummer before he got in the L. But they’re all on my team along with Melo because they belong on the best team I can put together.
June 12th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
n.googs says:
PG - Jason Kidd (hasn’t lost an international basketball game in his life - excellent fit to compliment the core “stars”)
SG - Kobe Bryant (Really?! I have to explain this pick?? haha)
SF - Carmelo Anthony (I don’t like him, I don’t like his game, but after leading this team in the World Championships, I doubt he’ll be left off the roster)
PF - LeBron James (Fits the system well, a potential monster in the paint, that unfortunately the Cavs are too thick to recognize)
C - Dwight Howard (He will eat this joke-ass international centers ALIVE. Name one international center that could MAYBE contain him? Yao? Not a chance…)
BENCH
PG - Chris Paul (You can’t leave him off this team. Didn’t he break a Team USA record for assists a few tournaments back?)
SG - Mike Miller (I’ll ignore that he looks like a homosexual with that hair thing hes got going on. He can stroke from downtown, and thats what this team needs to stretch defenses.)
SF - Shawn Marion (He’s long, athletic, and one hell of a defender. This team needs players who will settle into roles, and this guy fits that defensive stopper role PERFECTLY.)
PF - Amare Stoudemire (He’s head and shoulders better than any other PF on this roster, but I think you need him to come off the bench for that offensive spark and the energy he can bring right away.)
C - Greg Oden (I say give him a chance, if he’s cleared to play. If not, This spot goes to Tyson Chandler. I like athletic bigs who defend the paint and block/alter some shots. I’d go out on a limb and say some of the international bigs here are actually worse than some of the bigs G.O. faced in college. Plus, reports are coming out that he’s BEASTING in Trailblazers practices, hitting mid range jumpers and tearing the rim off the backboard, so he can definitely contribute in a very positive way to this team.)
G - Michael Redd (He’s a pure shooter if there ever was one, and just like in Mike Miller’s case, thats exactly what this team needs to balance out the dominant bigs.)
SF - Shane Battier (He personifies what this team needs in a role player - somebody who’s willing to sacrifice for the team and hustle his ass off. He’s a pretty solid defender, and on the other side of the ball, he can knock down 3’s.)
Now, the players I didn’t choose, and why they were omitted:
PG - Gilbert Arenas (They don’t need him. He’s not a point guard, and this team has a glut of wing scorers and three point shooters. Plus, he strikes me as a guy whose out to get his, and the teams performance comes second. Not for Wizards, obviously, but in situations like these, All Star Games and International competitions. To me, he personifies the dark ages of this Team USA.)
PG - Chauncey Billups (Again, he’s a combo guard, and this team already has two EXCELLENT point guards, and a glut of wing scorers and three point shooters.)
PF - Carlos Boozer (Ignoring the fact that he played a blind person, Boozer just isn’t up to par with the post players on this team. Maybe he edges out Tyson Chandler if Greg Oden isn’t cleared to play.)
SF - Bruce Bowen (The rest of the world already hates America. We don’t need Bruce Bowen and his dirty play hurting any international players, and tarnishing the world’s view of us any more. Plus, Shane Battier, to me, is a better fit for this team.)
PF - Elton Brand (Yeah, he’s a beast. So are the bigs higher on the roster than him. And I think they do it better, with more energy and athleticism.)
C - Tyson Chandler (As I stated above, he’s on the bubble. I like his game, he’s one hell of a defender, and I think he could be a D-Rod like player for this team.)
PF - Nick Collison (hahahaha.. WHO?!)
SF - Kevin Durant (I don’t like him. He’s a jacker. Thats not what this team needs, nor what it will ever need. He doesn’t contribute anything besides points. He could get alot, but he’ll shoot like 32%.)
PG - Kirk Hinrich (Just doesn’t cut it. I like him, he’s a solid point, but compared to the other points on this team, he is just out place and underdressed.)
PF - Antwan Jamison (I like him, but again, I think the bigs on this team are on a whole ‘nother level. Maybe hes on the cusp. It could go either way.)
SG - Joe Johnson (Maybe He takes Mike Miller’s roster spot. Either way, I wont complain. To this team, I think they’re the same player.)
C - Brad Miller (I like him. I think he fits the team, tall, athletic, a GREAT post passer. I just think the young guns have passed him up.)
SG - Adam Morrison (Injured? Just let it be known that he doesn’t belong in the same paragraph with the other guards on this roster.)
PF - Lamar Odom (Have you seen him in the later parts of these playoffs?! He’s a non-factor!)
SF - Paul Pierce (He’s just not as good of a fit as ‘Melo, LBJ and Kobe. The odd man out, if you will.)
SG - J.J. Reddick (See Morrison, Adam.)
PG - Luke Ridnour (See Morrison, Adam; Hinrich, Kirk.)
PG - Deron Williams (I’m not a fan of his, but regardless, he doesn’t bring anything that people ahead of him don’t bring. You say team USA needs 3 point guards. I say, they have JKidd and CP3. They also have LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, two guys who are capable of running the point if need be, plus they’re both MUCH better than Williams. I think after J.Kidd retires, he’ll be the man.)
And lastly, my most controversial omission of all,
SG - Dwayne Wade (They don’t need him. Miami needs him to get 100000% for the season. Kobe’s a better scorer, a better rebounder, a better passer, a better defender, a better leader, AND he’s better in bed! You can clog the roster with a guy like DWade, when you need three-point shooters on this team. And lets face it, DWade couldn’t even pretend to be a three point shooter for Halloween. I don’t like him not being on the team, but this team just doesn’t need him at this point in time.)

Big PGs are the norm in the Olympics/Int’l ball and last I checked, JKidd was pretty damn good last summer and has lost all of, that’s right, ZERO games in his international career. He HAS to be in, just make sure he doesn’t hit no ladies…
The team (with starters first, then no order):
PGs Kidd, Deron (who could play either guard spot) Chauncey (who could play either guard spot)
SGs: Kobe, Joe Johnson (versatile as hell. he could play the 1-3) and you could run Chauncey at the 2 sometimes too
SFs: LeBron, Melo (who I’d start at the 4 in the Int’l game,) Tayshaun (who could play the 4 some too in Int’l ball)
PFs: Melo, Bosh, Amare
Cs: Dwight, could play Amare here too
I know this is very weird. I left off DWade and CP3 for size/health issues even though I’d put both in the top 10 in the NBA. We need big guards that can shoot and defend in the Olympics, because that’s what other teams have and that’s why we’ve lost in some previous Int’l tournaments. Neither does that well, so despite liking them both, they’d be at home on my team.
Now go ahead and rip me leaving them off, I know it’s coming and I probably deserve it, I just can’t think of anyone on this team I wouldn’t rather have FOR THE OLYMPICS AND INT’L RULES.
also, JJ Redick seems like one of those, complete joke in the NBA but could RUN SHIT in the Olympics. It’s a shame he’s not Canadian or something. Oh well…

fallinup….I realize he can score and is an incredibly talented player but Melo in my opinion is someone who the team wouldn’t miss and personally I would really rather watch someone else represent our country….it’s not like Lebron or Kobe or a half dozen other players couldn’t make up for his scoring while adding positive chemistry and some defense. I don’t have the stats in front of me but I imagine his fg% wasn’t that great but that he just took more shots…..I could be wrong but I doubt it.

Carlos Boozer (unless you can get KG)
Joe Johnson (you could switch him out for Shawn Marion, Melo, or Durant and I’d probably be okay)
Chris Bosh (I’d rather have more bigs than wing players)
Left off the team:
Dwyane Wade - He’s injured
Elton Brand - He’s injured (isn’t he?)
Jason Kidd - Too old and ineffective (see: Mavericks playoff performance 2008)
Greg Oden - He’s still working his way back from injury
Paul Pierce - He’s a really good player, but he only shows up on offense and he can’t outscore Kobe or LeBron. So he is left off (Also, I have a huge anti-Boston bias).
Gilbert Arenas - I think he’s still injured. Also, we don’t need a PG who only scores.

Kooley High says:
Carmelo Anthony - Melo is a beast in the international game…his game is built for it.
Carlos Boozer - A better fit for the team, he can score in the paint, rebounds and played for Coach K.
Michael Redd - He can shoot.
Kobe Bryant - Whether or not Bean takes home a ring…he’s not gonna lose to the rest of the world. Its just not gonna happen…he played inspired consistent hard D last summer…that doesn’t happen alot with him.
Tyson Chandler - You got some shot blocking, rebounding, fouls and some dunks out of him. No doubt he’s gonna be looking for CP3’s lob pass.
Dwight Howard - He’s absolutely freaky. No matter what anyone can say, no one overseas has seen anything like Mr. Howard.
LeBron James - Hey this guys gotta win something. His pro team can’t get it right but no one can stop will Lebron in Beijing.
Jason Kidd - I hope J-Kidd plays in the 2010 World Games, who cares if he won’t be able to play any D, watchin him throw alley-oops to Lebron last summer was good enough to make the team for me.
(side note: Anyone wonder why J-Kidd didn’t want to go to Cleveland instead of Dallas? Why no one even mentioned Cleveland being in the running for J-Kidd? I know Cubes has bucks but Dirk and Josh Howard over Lebron? wtf?)
Greg Oden - If he is ready for contact play, Oden will be a beast. He’s smart and he looks like the type of kid who will soak up everything about the game from his teammates.
Chris Paul - Duh. The best point on the planet. He plays D! Legit on ball D.
Dwyane Wade - He’ll remind everyone this summer that he is D-Wade. Plus he doesn’t mind coming off the bench.
Deron Williams - First he’ll win a gold medal…then he’ll want to go east to win some rings.
Starting Five
C - Dwight Howard
PF - Carmelo Anthony
SF - Lebron James
SG - Kobe Bryant
PG - J-Kidd
Bench
Greg Oden
Tyson Chandler
Carlos Boozer
Michael Redd
Dwayne Wade
Deron Williams
Chris Paul

Yoooo says:
And dumbass who leaves Kidd off needs a peebath. What’s wrong with you young boys? You gonna leave off a guy who has won EVERY game he’s ever played in international competition??? A guy who has shown to be a glue??? Some of you need reality checks for real.
And who would make an argument against having Kobe on any team??? No team is better without Kobe. It’s impossible.

Celts Fan says:
@IGP, Josh hasn’t gotten any Olympic love cuz he’s just not good enough. Dude’s an amazing NBA player, but he can’t shoot worth a damn, and that’s absolutely vital in the Olympics (you can get away w/ a center and possibly a big PG thta can’t shoot, but you better be able to drain a jumper at every other position.) Watch what happens to Matrix, he won’t make it iether. Those are the type of guys that are VITAL to NBA teams and completely out of place in the Olympics. Not a bad thought for down the road if he keeps developing that jumper, but not right now, not just yet…
@Kooley, what could the Cavs have given up for JKidd? Nothing that woulda been enough to get him. Kidd wasn’t an FA, he didn’t CHOOSE shit, he just accepted it. (I know he coulda said he wasn’t gonna go and that’d be that, but that’s different than choosing exactly what team he’s gonna go to.)

AY says:
how about if you win the nba championship, your team goes to the olympics. If you’ve got international players, swap them out for all-stars; if you’ve got injuries, swap them out for all-stars. You can’t just throw these guys together, practice for 2 weeks and expect to beat guys that’s been playing on the same team since 12.
June 12th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Amar says:
nba owners would never go for that, say after 82 games + playoffs then another olympic tournament before the preseason starts?
who’s going to pay the owners for lost revenue if their stars get injured, and they end up winning 36-45 games the next season?

Austin Burton says:
While the NBA champs would be too worn out to turn around and play in the Olympics, what about a team that got knocked out in the first round? Would a team like, say, the Nuggets or the Mavs (replace Dirk with Bosh) with some rest be better equipped for international play than a squad of thrown-together All-Stars? Just throwing it out there…

If we are going with the best players in the NBA then,
Starters:
PG - Chris Paul
SG - Kobe Bryant
SF - Lebron James
PF - Amare Stoudemire
C - Dwight Howard
Bench: (in order of best players)
SG - Dwayne Wade
SF - Carmelo Anthony
Other notable top players in the NBA: Gilbert Arenas, Tracy McGrady, Shaq, KG, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Vince Carter, Chris Bosh, Michael Redd,
There are so many good players in the NBA that if they don’t win this year by like 20 every game I’m going to get pissed. Put Jordan, Bill Russell, Shaq, Tim Duncan, some good ass point guard and they will win. Dude Kobe and Lebron alone should be able to win it all. They got Carmelo and Dwade on the bench behind them. Wow that bench should be the best ever. They said they couldn’t make enough jumpshots or threes when they lost last time. Why don’t think just drive it every single time. No one can stop Chris Paul’s penitration. And Lebron and kobe and dwade and melo and gilbert can hit threes and they all should be able to lock it down defensively. dwight howard blocks eveyrthing. they should get kg tho. and paul pierce too. damn they should kill every team. no question.
