Eurocamp Day 2

Drop by your favorite mock NBA Draft site – either NBADraft.net or Draft Express will do – and check out some of those unfamiliar names in the middle of the second round: C Omer Asik, PG Goran Dragic, C Semih Erden, and PF/C Henk Norel. After a skills-focused session Sunday morning, those four guys were joined by Swedish point guard Rudy Mbemba (pronounced MEM-ba) and Georgian center Giorgi Shermadini in a six-man NBA workout. We’re breaking down which guys you’ll want your squad to nab before their two selections are up, and which guys they better stay away from.

We’ll say it here first: Mbemba looks like he was shot out of a cannon, and is deserving of a look over some of the aforementioned names. When we caught up with Fran Fraschilla yesterday, he warned us that “Mbemba is quicker than every guard in the draft except for [Derrick] Rose – that includes [Ty] Lawson and [Darren] Collison.”

Mbemba is stupid fast. He was giving 6-3 Goran Dragic real problems when these six were divided into a three-on-three. Dragic, who is an incredibly athletic point guard and a super talent in his own right, nearly pulled Mbemba’s jersey off of his body on a number of occasions because the little Swede was just too quick. The word is that even if Dragic is drafted, he’s going to stay in Europe for a number of years before coming to the U.S. He openly admitted to us that he’s not coming to work out for anyone before the draft, as he’s going to be training for the Slovenian national squad, who still can qualify for the Olympics.

As soon as the run was over, a guy wearing a Blazers polo strolled up to Mbemba. They have four picks – No. 13, No. 33, No. 36, and No. 55. Even if Portland is going to pry 6-4 G Rudy Fernandez from Spain, Mbemba would still be a worthwhile choice with their last selection.

As those two went head-to-head, the four-man rotation of the big men inside shed light on a serious issue with those mock drafts. 7-1 C Semih Erden is projected to go to Seattle at No. 50 or Miami at No. 52, while 7-0 C Omer Asik is projected to come off the boards at No. 34 to the T-Wolves or No. 45 to the Spurs. But Erden abused Asik in the post. He’s considerably stronger than his Turkish counterpart, and showed the same ability to knock down jumpers beyond 15-feet. Seriously, you want Erden on your team.

As for Henk Norel, this flying Dutchman is no Rik Smits. The three-on-three setting doesn’t showcase his ability at all – Erden made mince meat out of him. But he was excellent during a full five-on-five All-Star game against the U20 French National team in the evening, running the floor like a deer. He led all Eurocamp scorers in that game with 18 points, as he was the first man down the floor. And when your big man runs the break, you gotta reward him.

Nicolas Batum has arrived at camp, and will be in action all-day Monday. The packed crowds of the Benetton gym have been loving the talent so far, and it’s only getting better.
