The Champions Celebrate; Team USA starts to formulate

Paul PiercePaul Pierce w/Finals MVP trophy

One of our boys was at the Celtics championship parade on Wednesday and snapped some photos, which are posted at the end of this column. Of course Paul Pierce (who claimed he hadn’t slept since Game 6) was enjoying the moment and soaking in the atmosphere more than anyone, but the craziest moment award belongs to Big Baby, who at one point was shirtless and vomiting over the side of a float, asking anyone with a camera if they’d got it on tape. Guess we were wrong when we predicted Tony Allen would be the most fool-acting Celtic in the parade … There’s been a lot of speculation about what offseason moves the Lakers will make (watch for a Lamar Odom trade), but what about the Celtics? One important decision, Pat wrote on DimeMag.com yesterday, will be what to do about the James Posey situation. And should Boston try to re-sign Sam Cassell, or let him go to Denver and begin his transition from loudmouth player to loudmouth assistant coach? Then there are free agents P.J. Brown and Eddie House. We wouldn’t be surprised if P.J. just calls it a career and avoids pulling a Gary Payton — he was pretty much retired anyway before Pierce and Ray Allen talked him into signing with Boston — nor would we be surprised if E-House fancies himself a big dog now and waits for some team to be dumb enough to overpay him … The official announcements won’t be made until next Monday, but all day yesterday we were getting preliminary reports on who’s in and who’s out for Team USA. At last check: D-Wade, Michael Redd, Tayshaun Prince, Chris Paul and Jason Kidd were in, while Amare (his call) and Tyson Chandler (not his call) are out. No one’s really talking about it, but not having Chandler on the squad is a mistake if you ask us. Who else on the U.S. team besides Dwight Howard specializes in rebounding and defending in the paint? After Dwight, you’re left with Bosh, Boozer, Brand, Brad Miller, Jamison and Greg Oden as the only bigs in the program — and you know Oden isn’t going to be allowed anywhere near a competitive basketball situation until he’s wearing a Blazers uniform. You’ve got some scorers there and guys who can get boards, but Brand is the only real standout defender … Out of CP, Kidd and Deron Williams, who should be Team USA’s starting point? A lot of people are fine with Kidd getting the nod since he’s the vet, even if he’s the third-best player in that group right now, but Deron is getting more support than we expected … Overheard in the Dime office yesterday: “DeAndre Jordan is closer to Ron Howard than Dwight Howard.” … Speaking of the Draft, NBA TV was airing old Draft broadcasts yesterday, most notably the ones from ’84, ’86 and ’87. You know ’84 as argubaly the greatest class ever: MJ, Hakeem, Barkley and Stockton all went in the first round (and some guy named Devin Durrant was the first pick of the 2nd round). But who really dropped jaws in the office was Jay Humphries, a guard out of Colorado who was picked by the Suns in the first round (and was actually an assistant with Phoenix up until D’Antoni got fired). Dude was BANGIN’ on cats in his highlight reel. We were all wondering not only who he was at first, but how come he isn’t famous to this day … The ’86 version was truly depressing to watch, knowing what would later happen to Len Bias, Chris Washburn, Roy Tarpley and William Bedford, but seeing old highlights of Chuck Person (wearing his wedding tux as his Draft suit) and Johnny Dawkins was cool … ’87 was the year David Robinson went #1 overall, along with Reggie Miller, Kevin Johnson, Horace Grant, Muggsy Bogues, Mark Jackson, Reggie Lewis, Kenny Smith, and — as David Stern put it — “Scott Pippen” out of Central Arkansas … It’s cool and everything that Ray, KG and Pierce have been so adamant about squashing the “Big Three” nickname and pushing the “Big 15″ concept, but try telling that to Gabe Pruitt when he was making coffee and newspaper runs every morning during the season … You probably weren’t paying any attention at all to the Heat by the end of the season, but one of their parade of D-League guys getting actual minutes was Joel Anthony, who is running with Team Canada in next month’s Olympic qualifying tourney in Greece. Since that will conflict with Miami’s summer-league schedule, Anthony apparently had to clear it with Pat Riley and coach Erik Spoelstra. We’re guessing Riley’s responses went something like, “Who are you again?” … Did you know Derrick Rose‘s agent is B.J. Armstrong? Will that influence John Paxson‘s decision at all on Draft day? … Damon Stoudamire said in an interview with The Oregonian that he wants to coach after he retires, and eventually wants the head job at the University of Arizona. Yes, people, it’s getting closer and closer to the day when we’ll have D-1 college coaches with neck tats … We’re out like Chandler …

  • Jimmy King

    I’d swap Bosh for Chandler.

    Also, Deron for J. Johnson.

  • krip

only one shooter in that list

  • drewstar

not enough shooters and big men.

  • Jimmy King

I was just lookin at the list of NBA champs & since the 79-80 season (29 years), only 8 teams have won the trophy. Here’s the breakdown:

    LAL: 8 titles
    CHI: 6
    BOS: 4
    SAS: 4
    DET: 3
    HOU: 2
    PHI: 1
    MIA: 1

Iran is going to Dominate the olympics.

    Trust me.

  • Three Stacks

Iranians don’t dominate shit but their own submissive women. Get the fuck outta here.

  • josh

haha i watched team iran play the boomers the other night, they suck but they have a 7 3″ malcontent named Hidadi…he has some game.

Boomers for the Gold…..i can dream.

  • bill

Try wrestling against Iran and see who wins……

    he he.

Boomers need Gaze back and Brazil gets Oscar……..ahhhh

  • Yoooo

Yo that’s crazy, but true about coaches with tats everywhere. Nas said it best “Aint nothin left for us but hoop dreams and hood tournaments/ Thug coaches wit subs sittin on the bench either that or rap”.

Im still campaigning for Lakers to trade for Stephen Jackson. I think he’s the best fit man…

  • sans

Yo, who the fuck is Randy White, and why was everyone so sure he’d be the next Mail Man. Karl even called him the Mail Boy before the Mavs drafted him. Best quote from Mr. White, after taking reps with Malone, “I had no idea how hard he worked”…isn’t that statement indicative on so many levels on all the flameouts with potential in the history of the League?

Almost completely forgot that Pervis Ellison went #1 back when. Worst #1’s: 1) Kwame “Don’t Pass It To Stone Hands” Brown 2) Kandi Man 3) Big Perv 4) Martin “you only know of me because of Trivial Pursuit” Larue and 5) Kent “the Replacement” Benson (who I remember based solely on jokes that Kareem threw around in one of his books).

Don’t nobody ever throw Derrick Coleman on that list: he balled for a while before he found out about Krispy Kreme and was a cagey vet for years after he came out of the delusion that he was one of the top 5 players in the League. Peace.

  • knoc

    What about Olowakandi??

  • Ashlov

I think it’s funny that people knock Beasely for his immaturity, and there’s Derrick Rose refusing to work out for the Heat. While I want the Heat to get Beasely, a part of me hopes Chicago passes on Rose so I can see his sourpuss fucking face on draft night. Asshole.

I just wonder which point guard Miami will pick up when they trade Haslem ;)

  • ERIC

I think Joe Johnson (6’8” versatility, shooting) and Chandler (7’1″, D, boards, blocks) should be on the team USA team.

  • ERIC

Not to mention the CP3 to Chandler oops would be great to see on the Olympic stage

  • Celts Fan

Thanks for the pics Jed (gotta assume it was him, right?)

Eddie has proven he’s a solid bench scorer as long as there are ball handlers so he doesn’t have to eliminate that. He’s gotten pretty popular here and I hope we resign him (at least until Gabe Pruitt proves he belongs, which he should at least have a chance to do next year, but w/ the window still being open for another year or 2, and probably only another year or 2, can you afford to roll the dice? I say sign Eddie to a 1 year deal if he’s willing, if not, let him go get paid, no hard feelings at all…)

  • Celts Fan

btw, unless there are some family issues or something, Amare should be ashamed of himself. All they asked when they got this group together was for a 3 summer commitment with this summer being the most important. How you gonna ask out of the Olympics?!?

that’s probably good news for Elton Brand though, right?

  • Skeeter McGee

The earlier post about not having enough shooters is true, but in the FIBA championship games, LeBron led the whole team in FG% and shooting was not too much of a problem for Team U.S.A. Let’s see whether that’s the case this time around considering in the FIBA games we played teams that were either: a.)scrubs or b.)lacking their own star players (Varejao, Jasekevicious or however you say his damn name).

  • Skeeter McGee

    And also…

PLEASE L.A. trade Lamar “Where’s my Scrotum?” Odom for Ron Artest, cause you know Kobe and Phil won’t let Ron pull any of his bull. Plus, Artest isn’t too bad of a passing SF, so he could work in the Triangle I’m guessing.

    Lakers Starting Lineup for 08-09:
    1.) D-Fish
    2.) Kobe
    3.) Ron Ron
    4.) Pau
    5.) Bynum

    ^^^^Too nasty

    @ sans.

Thanks for making me feel old. I remember Randy White balling in college. He was a beast, didn’t translate well to the league.

  • rell

I would go with the following USA team:

    Kidd
    Deron
    Paul
    Kobe
    Lebron
    Melo
    Joe Johnson
    Redd
    Prince
    Chandler
    D. Howard
    Boozer

This would give me 3 perimeter defender in Kobe, Johnson, and Prince. 2 post defender in Howard and Chandler, 1 big man who can drain the jumper in Boozer, and 2 shooters in Redd and Johnson. You can also include Melo as a perimeter shooter because he be draining in the Olympics. I would leave Wade off because we do not know if he is healthy and he do not bring anything different that Kobe or Lebron can’t do.

My Boston homer pic would replace Tayshaun with Posey. He give me the 3 point shot and he can play defense. That is just a homer pic though.

The real dream team should include

    Kidd
    B.Diddy if healthy/Deron
    Paul
    Kobe
    Rip/Redd/Shuttleworth
    Lebron
    Joe Johnson
    Melo
    Bowen/Posey/Tayshaun
    D. Howard
    KG
    Duncan

    Honorable Mention:
Artest over the Posey/Bowen/Prince pic but I am scared a international incident would occur so this pic is out.

The U.S.A team need atleast 2 players who would care about not getting that many minutes but who can also win or blow up a game. That’s why I chose the Tayshaun/Bowen/Posey pic because the would not care about playing but can win you a game or lot down a player with their defense. If Ginoboli was playing I would love to see Bowen go up against him with Timmy protecting the basket. The other players I chose was the Rip/Red/R.Allen pic because they can win you a game or blow open one with their outside shooting.

  • Jonny Drama

    @Celts Fan

Wasn’t it only 3 years ago Amare had major surgery on his knees? I understand him wanting to be safe and not playing more ball than he has to. The Olympics aren’t great but his personal career means more to him because that is how he makes his money.

  • http://dimemag.com Austin Burton

@Johnny — That would make sense, except he’s already played for Team USA twice since the surgery. Why get worried about the knee now?

  • Jonny Drama

    @Austin

Ah I forgot about that. I don’t have any reason for Amare missing the Olympics then.

  • Lady Luck

I’m sure the Suns were happy to hear that from Amare. If he were playing someone would be saying that he should be forbidden from participating.

  • http://psinapticapotheosis.org Amar

best consequitive drafts? ’84 and ’85?

would a team made from the best of both of those drafts take a team made of the best of any two other consequitive drafts?

    (better than ’03 and ’04?)

  • K Dizzle

    Rell

I’m not feelin Chandler over Bosh. I think dudes are undersellin Bosh cuz the Raps are soft but the playa is a legitimate scoring/rebounding/shotblocking threat. If Amare is out, CB’s the only USA big that can create his own offense, hit the jumper and get somethin off the bounce. In the int’l game, there’s no bigs that can match up with a Bron/Melo/Tay/Bosh/Howard rotation. Dudes pickin Chandler cuz Paul throws him alley oops need to see a bigger picture. When teams go into zone, that alley won’t be there and I love Chandler’s athleticism, but I never seen dude make an offensive move. CP3 can throw that lob to Dwight, Bosh, Brand, Bron, Tay, whoever. You gotta have more than that to get on the squad.

I do agree it would be nice to get JJ on that squad. Dude can play 4 int’l positions

  • Celts Fan

KDizzle, I had JJ over Redd in my team when we all picked them last week (and Chauncey over Wade, but more assuming he wasn’t healthy than anything else)

Bosh can be our backup 5 now and play some 4 too. Perfect fit in the Int’l game (and I agree COMPLETELY on your take for Chandler. He’s perfect in the NBA and completely out of place in the Int’l game.)

  • http://www.barackobama.com Jim

    @Amar

’84 puts out the GOAT, Top-5 PG, Top-5 C, Top-10 PF. I think they and Jay Humphries stand against any other 2 drafts, easy.

  • mavid

I’m telling y’all, Joe Johnson is gonna be on the team. The fact he has the versatility to play and defend 3 positions (pg, sg, sf) and can shoot the ball really well will make him the 11th or 12th man in.

  • K Dizzle

    Question for the masses:

Since Patrick Ewing, who’s been the Knicks’ best draft pick?

  • Skeeter McGee

    To K Dizzle,

    It’s more like:
Since Patrick Ewing, have the Knicks done anything right?

On another note, I really think KG would be a good fit for the Olympic team because he likes to play the perimeter and has a solid jumpshot from what would be almost 3-point range internationally.

  • K Dizzle

    Skeeter

That’s a good question cuz we were talkin bout it and dudes were sayin after Ewing, Sky Walker, Action and Strickland (all in the 80s), the best Knicks are all free agents or trades

    My Olympic B Squad

    Baron, AI
    Joe Johnson, Ray
    Pierce, Josh Smith
    KG, Amare
    Duncan, Chandler
    Mike Miller, Brandon Roy

  • Diego

For the Knicks, David Lee has turned out to be a steal as the last pick of the first round.

  • doc

I had a Jay Humphries card for the Bucks back in the dAy.The UsA team got players they gotta pick because they are coddling they’re balls.
