$100 Million Man

Since Baron Davis has opted out of his deal in Golden State, and could very well end up next to Elton Brand in a Clippers uniform next year, the Warriors aren’t going to wait by and watch. According to the Washington Post, they’ve offered Gilbert Arenas a five-year, $100 million max deal. Supposedly, the Warriors were ringing Gil’s phone off the hook within the first thirty minutes of free agency.

But the Wizards upped the ante right back with a six-year $124 million sheet. Now that they inked Antawn Jamison to a four-year, $50 million deal, the Wizards have satisfied one of Agent Zero’s preconditions for returning to the club.

“He said he’d take less money if they got me, and they got me,” Jamison told the Associated Press. “So I think everything will get worked out with Gilbert.”

Insiders believe that Arenas is leaning towards staying in DC. He went to the Verizon Center late last night for a workout and a meeting with Ernie Grunfeld. But other team owners are trying to pry him away from the nation’s capital. The Maloof brothers in Sacramento are doing everything they can to get his services.

From Ivan Carter’s Washington Post blog

“I heard from a very reliable source that the Sacramento Kings contacted Arenas and said they are willing to do “whatever it takes” to land his services even if they have to “trade their entire team.”

Dude has been injured the last f*ckin two years, nobody knows how that knee is going to hold up? I wouldn’t pay this loud mouth dude 100 million sh*t. I would sign him to a 4 year 50 million just like jamison, and explain to him that they need more peices to win a championship, they still have a sh*tty a*s center in Haywood’s slow a*s. I wouldn’t sign this chump to a 100 million dollar deal though. That sh*t is just foolish. Right after he gets paid watch his knees turn to dust. He’s one dimensional anyway. Dude is a scorer, and with that knee f*cked up he’s prolly gone lose a step. Whoever pays this bum this money deserves to lose!

    Agent 0 is going nowhere.

  4. Blue says:

i know i’m gonna get a lot of crap for saying this, but i think gil is a bit overrated. i think he’s a star in this league for sure, but not a top tier star like kobe, lebron & d-wade.

  5. Truth says:

You get no crap from me. Your assessment would be correcto mundo!!!

  6. Steve M. says:

It’s about ticket sales. Baron Davis and Gilbert Arenas are stars. People go to regular-season basketball games to see big names play.

  7. Daily boy says:

It’s always cool to see an All-Star get that money, but like some have said before me will he be durable enought for them to get there dollars worth. And plus they have had D.C. Version of the Big 3 and still haven’t been able to stop Lebron the past 3 years. But hey if they wanna pay him like that “I ain’t mad at em”

  8. PALakerFan says:

Wow is this re-goddamn-diculous! What a waste of money by a bunch of 3rd tier teams. So what if DC keeps Arenas and Jamison. Big deal! They’re not getting any better. This is why the good teams – LAL, SA, DET stay good year after year and these teams lose in the 1st round or worse every year.

  9. Tom says:

Having a star on your team increases attendance at your away games, but not your home games. Winning games increases home attendane. Professor David Berri did a study on this.

So, if you really want to help your opponents make more money, sign a star like Arenas.

Even healthy, Arenas was never that good. He was just a jacker. Throw up enough crap, and you’ll score some points. There’s a reason Washington was better without him.

  10. PALakerFan says:

Not to mention, you could easily argue that Jamison is as good or nearly as good as Arenas and just took less than half of what Agent Big Mouth is going to get. Some friend! Caron and Jamison along with another couple mid-level guys and DC could be better next year without Arenas.

  11. PALakerFan says:

Mullin would be better suited to resign Monta and throw a $100 million at Elton Brand. THAT’s a good foundation!

  12. fiyaman says:

    another rashad Lewis mistake..

  13. steven says:

These clubs are just throwing money away, he’s definitely not worth it, which is why I’m glad Isiah is not around anymore ’cause he’d be salivating to make a stupid move and try and have dude in a Knicks uni.

  14. Homeless J says:

What Tom says makes a lot of sense to me. I’m the kind of guy who would drive up to Portland and get a Blazers ticket if someone like Gilbert came through to play against us. or any of my other particular favorite players. but there’s no way I could shell out money for 42 home games a year, or anywhere close to that, even if the blazers signed Gil or any other of my favorite players.

  15. Blue says:

    thanks truth!
agent zero is good at marketing himself. and he’s made himeself into a marketable commodity in the league. probably as a business decision on the owner’s part, it makes sense because he can probably make a good profit just based on resigning gil (despite his inflated contract), but this isn’t gonna make the team any closer to being a championship team.
i’m gonna go out on a limb and say that 3 years into his 6 year contract, they’re gonna be sorry about not having any cap space to sign somebody who will really help out the franchise.

  16. Tha Boddy says:

You all are fools Gilbert is a beast there are plenty of teams what would love to have him at the PG/SG position and would pay him if they had the space. And remember this there are some contracts that are not Gil related (Daniels,Thomas, Songaila even weak azz Stevenson) that can be trasformed into youth, talent and what…CAP ROOM!!!
The Wizards have been shopping Thomas and Daniels heavy contracts for what 2 years. Get rid of them even though “Tha Poet” can play well just 2 small for position and get sum youth. Every1 says the Wizards are better without Gil but know this. Caron the beast that he is cannot be #1 option for game winners. There are plenty of players in the NBA who can make a move and shoot but there aren’t many who are the reason the game is won ala Agent Zero tha DC hero!!!

  17. GEE...no nose job says:

Has Gil ever made it out of first round? Just wondering. Anyway Post #2 was nothing but truth.

I said sometime back I would trade dude for a pg, a good C and a number 1 draft pick and prolly some cash just to top it off.

Paying dude all that money before hand is crazy. All that is crazy. To many cats get paid all this money before hand and then don’t deliver.

Don’t know how the L could work that out but something should be done. Cats scoring 4 points and pulling 6 boards getting paid millions lol. Crazy.

Washington ain’t being smart they are being desperate.

  18. bleedingfinger says:

Eh, the warriors should skip out on both Arenas and Davis, and focus on getting J Crittenden and put in a max offer for Josh Smith. That would be something for all ‘dubs fans to celebrate.

  19. Sam I Am says:

See thats why we here in DC know what expect year after year…

    41-41 season give or take…

People hoping for the best and expect the same result…like the wack Redskins

let Gilbert go and go after a decent point and a nice PF and everything else falls into place…I would go for Reddick and save ALL that money

  20. hahns says:

arenas is not work 20mil a year……not many players in the league are.

this is the problem…its good that its only for five years, but you got superstars signing monster contracts to losing teams..then when they cant get in/go far in the playoffs, they cry and ask for more help. well its too hard to get more help when youre taking up all the cap space!!!!

  21. Ferdiberdi says:

Arenas is a star in the league but def not in Kobe / Lebron level. He’s clutch, entertaining but dont know if he really dominates games both ways.

Come to think about it, i wonder how good the offers will be when LBJ and wade contracts expire. these are max contract players lol

  22. Truth says:

    @hahns
I agree with you one hundred percent. But the GM’s should know better. There are only a handful of people even worth 20 mil, and if they really wanted to be a winner then they wouldn’t even take 20 mil, because you can’t get no other players when you eaten up d*mn near 25 percent of the cao space, and all these bums are delirious anyway. Even Ben Gordon’s non defense playin a*s think he worth a max contract. He’s a 6th man for pete’s sake!

  23. Damon says:

arenas went to the second round in 05 when the wizards beat the bulls in 6. he hit the game winner in game 5.

  24. Ian says:

owners and GMs need to be hung to dry sumtimes, i like gibert but but no way he worth near damn 20 mil. my guess here is Bron is smiling somewhere. he could have the chance to be the first 200M dude in the nba by 2010. and a huge market like NY could well afford that.

  25. Luigi says:

imagine Bron leavin Cleaveland for NY. 200 mill is a good possibility 200 mill for 5 yrs haha dats about … 40 mill per yr.

but if Gil signs this. i think hes makin a mistake. its good of him that hes going to china kuz when he comes back he MIGHT take less money because remember. GIL WOULD TAKE LESS MONEY IF JAMISON COMES BACK!!!!!! get that in your head ppl.

n jamison has comeback n so when gil comes back n looks at the wiz financial issues. he’ll take less money n tell ernie to improve the team.

you can all read this from the WSH post.

Good luck Gil n may you bring us to the 2nd round or ECF or possibly NBA Finals in about 2-3 yrs.

WHILE dem Cleveland fans are gonna be grimising when LeBron Bolts them for BROOOKKKLYYNNN!!!

oh yeah btw i love LBJ but i hate CLE.

    GO WIZARDS!

  26. K Dizzle says:

Doubt if Lebron could sign for 40M a season under the salary cap and the Nets needin dudes for him to play with. Nets better not think Bron just gonna come to NY just to come there. If the Cavs get good and the Nets lose all they talent just to get Bron, then he ain’t leavin Ohio, but Nets definitely gonna try to throw it all at him

Props to Baron for optin out, but it’s gotta be long term security.
Great move by the warriors to offer 100 over 5 for Gil and now Wiz really gotta overpay. Payback for him leavin after his 2nd year lol

  27. bballinca says:

Only players that should get that kind of money are players that cna change turn a franchise around. (Kobe, Lebron, Shaq, Garnett) Wizards would be jsut as good if not better with someone else in that role.

  28. Dave says:

    Arenas is worth $100mil

He is the Washington Wizards hope of better days

  29. LakeShow84 says:

Point guards should never score 50-60 and not have at least 8 assists.. too many touches to be selfish.. THIS IS NOT A POINT GUARD!! and who knows if he can still scorelike he did that ONE year?? AND GS doesnt need two scoring guards in this capacity.. it will be like Carmelo and Iverson.. too much 1on1.. Send him to the Grizzlies so he disappears..

  30. LakeShow84 says:

And i dont blame Baron Davis.. Everybody celebrates Monta like HE took them to the playoffs.. respect the elders.. Monta’s on the come up no doubt but a solid backcourt should have TWO stars.. and Monta isnt a great passer.. yet at least..
GS messed this up.. And now they want GA?? Wow Mullins running out of Magic it seems.. im still waiting for Wright to pan out.. Because they were lacking the fire power (Richardson) to get over the hump last year..

  31. V says:

umm y do they think this man is worth that much LOL i swear he’s ALWAYS injured, is this joke or something?

  32. Spliff 2 My Lou says:

If Arenas gets 100 million then imagine what Lebron could possibly get when he becomes a free agent. He could potentially pull Jordan money. Big mistake by the Wizards.

  33. Lee says:

Someone mentioned the Lewis sign and trade .. can someone answer me why Orlando had Lewis for $80 / 5 years as a free agent then decide to do $120 / 6 years. Why not just do the 5 years then instead of paying him $40 mil for the 6 year, pay him $5 mil as he’ll be well past his prime.

That never made any sence to me. Anyone else know ???

  34. bill says:

    gah, nba is KILLING me.

    Lewis and now this.

Both great players sure but lets put $$ into perspective

  35. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! says:

the nba is killing itself with these huge contracts. economy is going down drain and basketball tickets are $$$ compared to ever other major sport.

  36. ninja cool says:

Wow, and even if he gets paid, Det., Cleveland and Boston will still be better. Good job Wiz!

  37. Tha Boddy says:

You know what im tired of people comparing Gil and Rashard Lewis. Rashard Lewis was a #2 option all his career!!!Gilbert has be #1 for how many years of his nba life…hmm lemme think 6 YEARS!!! When it was Rashard Lewis and Desmond Mason in Seattle Mason came b4 him and of course the Glove. With Gil it was 1st year J-Rich second year to present Agent Zero.
Has Rashard Lewis ever been able to keep a 25ppg average???NO!!! When it was the Allen and Lewis show they both coulda went crazy and put up high ppg averages in their time but who did their thing…Walter RAY ALLEN!!!
When it was time for Gilbert to shine he got down man.
The only thing you all should put Rashard Lewis and Agent Zero in comparison for is contract size cause in skill set Agent Zero the D.M.V. Hero is so far beyond
