Breaking News: Corey Maggette signs With Warriors

With news breaking that Elton Brand is heading to Philly, it sets other free agent moves in motion. The first domino to fall is Corey Maggette, who is reportedly signing with the Golden State Warriors:

Sources told ESPN.com that Maggette decided against waiting to see if the Los Angeles Clippers would lose Brand to the Philadelphia 76ers — which could have created an opportunity to stay with the Clippers — to take a multiyear offer from the Warriors at a starting salary above the mid-level exception, which is expected to approach $6 million.

Maggette will be a beast in that Warriors’ system. They lose Mikael Pietrus, but gain Maggette? No brainer for Chris Mullin and the Warriors.

so…essentially, it was a baron davis for corey maggette swap?

  2. Big Sia says:

    WOW

    GOODBYE ANY CLIPPER HOPES

G state just might be nice as fuck now

  4. Jonny Drama says:

I don’t know how much it will help the Warriors, but Maggette in that uptempo system should be a fantasy beast for points, free throws and maybe rebounds.

  5. Homeless J says:

wow. so the Clippers just traded Brand and Maggette for Baron Davis.

I guess when you’re Elgin Baylor and you’re sitting around for like 20 years doing jack shit and then all of a sudden you’re supposed to do something important, you’re bound to fumble the ball.

As good and popular (and injury prone) as BD is, and as much as everyone says Corey is a ball-hog and a shot-jacker, I still would never essentially give up Elton Brand and at least a servicable scorer in mr. spaghetti for a guy who might not give you another full season until his next contract year.

  6. sirak says:

Obviously Brand seeing the Celtics in the playoffs did not have the same apeal as the $$$ signs in Philly…

    Money talks, players walk…

  7. Myrie says:

    Homeless J–

Elton Brand is not injury prone. Barring last season, he played (started) in 80,79 and 81 games in the previous 3 seasons.

1 season out does NOT make a player injury prone.

  8. yallallreadyknow says:

monta ellis at the point guard.
stephen jackson at the two guard.
corey maggette at the small forward
al harrington at the power forward
    andres biedrins at center

    hmmm…..

  9. kobeef says:

at first I thought this signing was a stupid effort to get back at LA but SJax and Maggette are a nice 2/3 combo and assuming Monta takes over the PG duties GS is looking OK.

The 4/5 spots are still pretty weak and will need improvement before GS is a winning team

  10. Homeless J says:

    Myrie -

I meant Baron Davis, not Elton Brand. Baron Davis is injury prone.

  11. Bron42 had springs before slamball says:

sucks to be baron davis though..since now the clippers are gonna suck again. And the warriors still need a PG since monta is more of a scoring guard. Call up the blazers and steve blake lol and no one on the warriors roster will stop anyone on defense not to mention how weak their bench is now.

  12. Celts Fan "Kobe, Tell me how my ass tastes" says:

THANK GOD! Get him the fuck off the market so the Celtics don’t do something stupid. Just resign Posey and let this clown get his shots up somewhere else. Dodged a fuckin bullet…

  13. bron42 aka Global-4A-reason says:

ya but if the celts give posey all the money they got, they’ll still have no decent backup for KG and perkins

  14. Dagomar says:

    Huh?

Okay, I get it for Maggette. He’s basically getting twice the money he would for a title contending team, and he’s still in his prime. Maybe in a few years he’ll sell himself to a San Antonio or LA or Boston and get his ring.

But for the Warriors? They must have real confidence that Ellis can play the point, because Maggette is too small to be a 3 and obviously can’t play the 1. I don’t know if Ellis is ready to be a franchise PG, or even if that’s how he’s best used. Also, do the Warriors need another defensively-weak player? And can they afford to spend 10 million a year on a player who won’t push them over the top as a contender in the West?

    Just doesn’t make sense.

  15. hahns says:

maggette sucks man. the guy just jacks shots. no chance sa or boston woulda signed him, disrupts the offense

  16. ERIC says:

All this talk is cheap. Maggette said he was sick of losing and wanted to contend – but then the Warriors come calling with bigger $$ and, surprise (sarcasm), he takes it. All that BS about contending.

Same with Brand – willing to take less money to get more star power to the Clips. More $$ comes his way and he’s out very quickly.

I don’t know why the Warriors are going after Maggette when they SHOULD be throwing all their $$ at Josh Smith who would be a monster in Nellie’s system.

  17. Spreefo3 says:

Why are my Warriors paying him 4.2 Mil more than anyone besides Memphis and the Clips can pay him? Watch for Harrington for Hinrich to drop any day now. And we traded away J-Rich who is making about the same money away?

  18. Ding Dong We Got Danilo Gallinari? says:

    Can Diddy back out still?

  19. nick says:

no way baron backs out. he is from la and now he gets to play at home and work on his movie production company all while being in la.

  20. Talented says:

Definitely feelin this move. Golden state tryna do big things its lookin like

  21. BxBaller says:

If I was Baron, I’d be pissed off right now. You can’t trust them damn Blue Devils. “cough Boozer, Brand cough cough”.

  22. rangerjohn (maggette:"its not about the money, PAY ME!") says:

so much for “its not about the money i just want to win”, maggette is just a typical self absorbed nba player. he had a couple of very good chances to win, and instead he went for the money on a team that just lost its heart? sure they have a decent (an OK that is)starting 5 but tell me again who is coming off the bench for the warriors? is anyone going to stop nellie from looking and coaching like he just finished a 5th of vodka before the game?

i would like to have seen him sign with my spurs but at least he didnt leave them holding on to hope for another month, they still have some time to shop.

  23. Ross says:

He isn’t worth $10 million, IMO. This completely goes back on what he said last week, because I don’t see Golden State getting to the playoffs this next season either.

  24. doc says:

Who cares. But stop hating on players for taking money yall would kill somebody for.It makes yall look foolish.
