Breaking News: Nuggets trade Marcus Camby to Clippers

Clippers logo

ESPN.com is reporting that the Denver Nuggets have agreed to a deal that will send Marcus Camby to the Clippers for just a second-round pick. Not sure how that makes sense for a guy who on his career had averaged close to 11, 10 and almost three blocks per game, or how this helps the Nuggets beyond trading the only effective defensive player on their entire roster for cap relief. Gotta think they’re clearing cap room in order to make a big move, but we will keep you posted.

  1. Ashlov says:

The Knicks are really stupid for not taking the same deal for Zach Randolph. No way in hell anyone else takes on that contract. NY is cursed.

  2. MC3PO says:

Nuggets needed to clear up the roster spot for another scorer.

They had too much defense already….

  3. daquest?on says:

WTFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE GM MUST BE HIGH ON COCAINE, THIS MUST BE THE DUMBEST TRADE EVER. DENVER TRADED AWAY THEIR BEST DEFENDER FOR A SECOND ROUNDER!!!!! AND THE CLIPS HAVE KAMAN WTF!! I GUESS U COULD SAY GOODBYE TO JOSH SMITH, OKAFOR AND IGGY

  4. josh says:

wow….clips back on the map. Nuggets freakin stupid.

  5. sans says:

dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb move by denver.

  6. K Dizzle says:

Y’all need to calm down. Obviously, Denver’s clearin up space for a major player or they wanna have space to sign JR and the Clips already have Kaman so they probably gonna turn either Kaman or Camby into a major piece too since nobody’s takin their salary space but there’s about 15 teams that could use a rebounder/shotblocker like Camby.
Try to relax and let the deals play out, damn…

  7. daquest?on says:

i would never trade camby for jr. NOT IN DENVER

  8. daquest?on says:

WHY Would denver want to sign another offensive minden guard that cant rebound. i know that jr smith is super talented but why make that trade to clear up space for him when camby is the best defensive player they have. thats if they made that move to sign smith

  9. alaskan_fire_dragon says:

camby will probably get traded for josh smith
    hawks need a canter
    clips need a PF
    sign and trade him!

  10. raro says:

Wouldn’t be surprised if Clippers and Heat start trade talks involving Kaman/Camby and pieces for Marion. Miami has a huge hole at Center and Camby would be perfect next to Beasley. I Feel really bad for AI, he should have opted out and come home to Philly.

  11. dagwaller says:

Good call, alaskan! I wonder what your theory is on why the Nuggets did the trade, though.

  12. Bone says:

Hard for me to see how this move helps either team. As #2 said, the Clipps already have Kaman and Camby does not replace what EB did on offense. Puzzling…

As for Denver…they have now lost Camby and Najera - the only two guys who played an sort of defense - and have nothing to show for it. Are they really content with going to war next year with K-Mart and Nene at the 4 and 5 spot? Those two are not exactly AC Green and Dolph Schayes in terms of duribility.

Maybe they are clearing cap space to go after Okafor? A younger Camby? That is the only thing that makes sense.

  13. Dime Magazine says:

yeah, unless the Nuggets are about to do something huge, that team is a total mess.

  14. alaskan_fire_dragon says:

Nuggets are heading straight to the rebuilding processs

  15. kobeef says:

    Agree with comments above.

This has GOT TO BE part of a bigger move for the Clippers or Nuggets.

As is, this makes no sense for either team. Sure Denver clears some cap space but they just traded the DPOY and their main need is D. For LA they just got a high paid paid player who plays the same position as Kaman who is making $10 million a year. Bizarre.

Funny thing is ESPN is calling Camby a forward - has he ever played forward?

If this is part of a trade for Josh Smith to Atlanta it is a great deal for the Hawks.

  16. Bron42 had springs before slamball says:

can’t denver offer josh smith mad money now, since him and melo are oak hill guys.. I really doubt the hawks are dying to trade for kaman or camby…so the only thing that makes sense to me would be denver needing cap INSTANLTY just to sign someone big ala okafor or josh smith. Both could be younger versions of camby on defense and have alil more defense.

  17. BxBaller says:

I wonder whats about to go down in LA and Denver. Hopefully the Knicks can send Z-Bo out there without any other pieces.

  18. TheBrownSound says:

    kobeef:
Camby played PF when he and Ewing were on the Knicks

  19. BillBlaze says:

I hate to say this but could the knicks be in line to get camby for z bo? that would make sense the clips could use a 6 10 pf who can go for 16/13 and gets payed alot. wait didn’t they already have that?

camby can break the stereotype that D’antoni doesn’t care about D. even though the summer league is proving that. he would be a legit big man in the east and would allow curry to play 4 but also not having to worry so much about doing the little things and would help his offense wit camby in the paint

  20. Dime Magazine says:

what about the thought that the contracts for Camby, Mobley and Tim Thomas all expire just in time for the LeBron free agent sweepstakes?

  21. Ding Dong We Got Big Snacks says:

As much I like Camby, he doesn’t bring a culture of defence to a new team. Great one-on-one and weak side defender, but he doesn’t transform the team he goes to and improves defence on a whole. He *was* the only guy on the Nuggets who could play D (and would play D) and the only insurance AI and Melo had when they let their guy slip past them.

  22. Top_Gun says:

This is a very good move for Denver, they just saved over 15 million dollars giving away an aging defender.

I agree with Ashlov on the first post, NY should’ve traded Zach since he does more harm than good for the team.

BTW Marcus Camby is overrated, he’s is a good team defender, not 1 on 1. His offensive game isn’t that great either. I’m sure Baron Davis isn’t too excited about this pick up.

  23. Bron42 had springs before slamball says:

even if that were tru, they wouldnt just trade him for a second round pick lol

  24. daquest?on says:

i think camby might be going to new york and thats fine and all but what about the nuggets?

  25. aj says:

Camby is overrated. He’s just a stat machine for you fantasy players but doesn’t make his team a winner.
Denver is tanking bad this year and their whole team is poorly built and garbage. They’re tired of being the #8 seed and getting crappy draft picks to where they can’t get better. Iverson is overrated and not a winner (I won’t say he’s a loser like other players but he still ain’t the man). Melo needs some big-boy pills to man-up and grow up.

  26. nick says:

nuggets officially worst defensive team in the leauge and now have no one to rebound for them. do they have a shot at josh smith now? josh is good friends with kmart and a team with ai, jr, melo and smith would be a nice mix. but no way they will not be paying luxury tax or that atl will let him go.

  27. aj says:

Not a bad move for LA. Yeah I call the Clips LA too, just to get at the Lakers fans. You can never really have too many assets unless you do what the Bulls did with all their assets and do nothing.
Now they have a fairly complete team set up and can lure in a big name superstar to come play with some combination of Kaman, Davis, Gordon, Camby, and Thorton.

  28. jz_smoove says:

i dont mind the Clips at all, and this kid Lebron is aight. i just dont see him playing for the Clips, which a lot of you all would refer as a loser franchise.

  29. Ocka says:

AI continues to get screwed. best scoring little man ever. period

  30. sans says:

It’s because Dona;d Sterling did nothing but penny pinch for decades. Camby and Kaman will kill on the boards. Offensive rebounds are huge in the L.

  31. carlos burgos a.k.a daquest?on says:

u must b out of ur mind thinking ai is overrated

  32. fLaVa says:

Clippers should change their name to Crippled because they have a lineup that bolds super injury prone players. Baron, Mr. Glass (camby), Kaman, Brevin KNight and Livingston (not sure if hes still on the roster) but combined i dont see them playing more than 5games TOGETHER.

  33. fLaVa says:

Also with their TOP draft pick being hurt in summer league already… with that said… GO LAKERS!

  34. SayItAintSo says:

Damn, Bayless is smooth…just checked back in and took it straight to the cup.

  35. off_the_bench says:

ai should just opt out of his contract or ask for a trade and do it like mike finley, bob horry, damon stoudamire, deaven george, grant hill, sam casel and so on– sign with a championship squad, and play about ten-twenty minutes pg, then get your ring at season’s end.

  36. GEE...First off happy birthday to me pimpinnnn! says:

Yea this sounds like a trade to make a trade orrrrr they can keep what they got and add too. i like the move by LA man all they gave up was a 2nd round pick. call it robbery. sure dude dont give you brands points if they keep camby but he gives you enough especially if la can bring in another decent scorer.

now Denver …it really dont matter cause long as George Karl at the helm they will underachieve. Lol dude suck so bad. Glad Camby escaped. i bet A.I. and Melo are like i cant stand being on this team lol

side note the houston and detroit rumors are popping hard again. cant blame tracy. its houstons gm fault you had much time to give tracy the right support and failed. i really hope he dont leave but if he do i totally understand.

  37. D'Antonio says:

Given the Clips have just upgraded from ZBo to CambyMan in a day, its hard to say that this was not a great move for them… True, Camby and Kaman are redundant, but decent centers are a valuable (overrated ?) asset in this league… (and Walsh seriously blew that one…)

I did not check the money, but a Camby/Marion trade would make lots of sense for both teams.
As for Denver… No, they don’t have enough cap to go after JSmoove. I just don’t see it. Maybe the owner is just very cheap…

  38. don cannon says:

wow da dumbest trade ever for da nuggers…..not even a first round draft pick…dey better get iggy, emeka or j smoove

  39. idano says:

The Clippers only gave up a second-rounder, but didn’t they also give up the cap-space they had available to lure someday they really needed? They better trade him, or Kaman Islands.

And isn’t Camby getting kind of old? I think it’s understandable that the Nugs want to get rid of his contract while his stock is high. Use the 20 million over the next two years to sign some young toughs.

  40. M.Balla says:

It’s amazing, two post, 37 comments, on a basketball site, and yet nobody mentioned that Nuggets get a 10 million dollar trade exception!!!

Plus, Nene and Kenyon >> Camby on the defensive side. Not let that stats fool you. Camby as DPOY was the worst award EVER. Everyone who voted for him should QUIT or GET SUSPENDED from journalism and find another job.

  41. Imperial-Mel says:

LMAO @ #24. Mello does play like a lil boy, and needs some man pills or something. Sombody tell me what Melo has to offer, and why is he on team USA??

  42. fiyaman says:

I see Camby for Z BO coming

  43. the mamba says:

Why is everyone wrirting this off as a horrible move when they just cleared 8 million in cap space by getting rid of a player (camby) that probably will be on the injured list by opening night. No way cambyman has 2 healthy yrs in a row. Anyone agree? The nba is not baseball and no team can buy a chip. U need smart planning and financial moves from ur gm (a lil luck don’t hurt too) to succeed in this league. Camby wasn’t getting them anywhere
