Breaking News: Sixers Trade Rodney Carney and Calvin Booth to Clear Space for Elton Brand, Josh Smith

There was a lot of speculation earlier today that the Sixers were going to make this move to push their available free agent money from $11 million to $15 million in order to try and outbid the Clippers for Elton Brand and/or the Hawks for Josh Smith. Both the Clips and Hawks have said they’ll match any offers, but the ensuing Sixers offer might be too much for either of them to equal.

The deal reportedly looks like this:

Philadelphia 76ers forwards Rodney Carney, Calvin Booth and a future No. 1 pick have been traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves to free as much as $2 million in additional salary cap space for the Sixers to offer Elton Brand or Josh Smith, multiple league sources said.

Minnesota sends Philadelphia its $2.8 million trade exception from a 2007 deal of Mark Blount to the Miami Heat.

The deal can’t be finalized until Wednesday at the earliest.

minnesota sucks. why the hell does kevin mchale have a job there? is there an old celtic running the 6ers?

why take on carney and booth? bah :shakes head:

elton brand is a better fit for philly in the sort term; but josh smith is better in the long run.

what kind of offense would the sixers have with dalembert and smith down low? neither have any post moves; i think lisa leslie has more low post offensive presence than both them dudes….

…and if they gonna run, how much longer can andre miller be expected to run? he’s going to turn into sam cassell in 1 1/2 yrs

  2. Sam I Am says:

    GO Wolves…

It don’t matter what we do, so long as we are in the news !!

    Go Kevin Love

  3. doc says:

Take them pricks. All they missing is Willie Green and it would’ve been our best trade in years.

  4. Ross says:

Another blockbuster trade for the T’Wolves

  5. Celts Fan, "Kobe, Tell me how my @$$ tastes" says:

Not a bad move for Minnesota. They’re not luring free agents to beautiful Minnesota anyway, so the trade exception isn’t as valuable as it’d be in NYC or Miami, Booth’s deal is expiring (I think, right?,) and Rodney Carney as least gives them some energy and athleticism off the bench. To get that for nothing other than a trade exception they obviously weren’t going to use anyway is a good get.

  6. Dime Magazine says:

And Minnesota gets a future 1st round pick. I think it’s actually a great deal for them. Booth won’t play at all and if they get anything out of Carney, it’s just a bonus on top.

  7. BxBaller says:

Damn, Philly looks like there are really serious about getting Brand and/or J-Smooth. I guarantee one of them ends in Philly, cause you know $ talks.

  8. Celts Fan, "Kobe, Tell me how my @$$ tastes" says:

ooooh ya! completely missed the first round pick thrown in too. good call…

  9. Buffalo Brave says:

    LOL @ philly

They’re not getting EITHER of them please stop it.

  10. Big V says:

Would suck for Philly if they got played by both these guys. That’s the risk you take though. By the way, I don’t think either of these teams (PHL/MIN) know what the hell they’re doing nowadays anyway.

  11. Jay Dub says:

There not getting either of them? Good assumption on that one. Having the 15 mil for the 1st year will bring either one of them to Philly. Atlana or paper-clips won’t match that. Getting Brand brings Philly top 3 in the east. Get a shooter through another trade and they are set!

  12. Jay Dub says:

Look what happens when the 76ers get a GM that knows what he’s doing. Carney wasn’t going to be anything and Booth is a complete joke.

Really miss you Billy King…looks like Ed is cleaning up your mess quickly.

  13. Zach says:

-Both the Clips and Hawks have said they’ll match any offers,

Isn’t Brand unrestricted AND the Warriors offered more than the Clips did?

  14. Kermit The Washington says:

DANG! Well I’m still holding onto this hope, that one of these 2 will end up with the Lake show…but did they say “AND/OR”?! Imagine if they pulled both?! Sick team…

  15. kobeef says:

    Wow.

If I am ATL or LA I am very nervous right now.

I don’t think Philly gets rid of young talent and a first round pick unless they are pretty sure they are getting something in return.

My guess is that one of them has told Philly they will sign if they can give them $15 million. I’m guessing it is Josh cause Brand wants to be in LA to make movies and all indications are that the deal to opt out and sign Davis was in the works for a while.

Also, we haven’t heard much from Atlanta about encouraging Josh to stay other than the standard “we’ll match anything”.

I like this deal for Minnesota. Carney has some talent and more 1st round picks are what the Wolves need at this point.

  16. Celts Fan, "Kobe, Tell me how my @$$ tastes" says:

Philly may get Smith, but Brand’s staying in LA. Between his burgeoning movie career (just produced Rescue Dawn) and his request for the Clippers to get/friendship with Baron, he’s not going anywhere.

Just be smart and don’t do what so many teams do and throw the extra $$$ at the next best guy if you can’t get one of them. I have this funny feeling someone’s gonna throw $10M at Corey Maggette to compensate and instantly regret it.

  17. Jay Dub says:

The Hawks wont pay that much with having bibby and joe johnson making big $$. No way Philly does this freeing up cash if one isn’t coming there

  18. Celts Fan, "Kobe, Tell me how my @$$ tastes" says:

@Kobeef, I’ve heard Josh is almost definitely going to sign the Sixers offer sheet (they will be offering the most money) and that all indications are that Atlanta was “definitely going to match” it, but that, because of that crazy ownership situation, that “definitely” softens up if the dollars get too out of control (heard they were expecting something in the $10-$12M per range), so Philly’s making a play to make it for as much as possible in hopes that Atlanta doesn’t match.

  19. Celts Fan, "Kobe, Tell me how my @$$ tastes" says:

@Jay Dub, isn’t Bibby in the last year of his deal this year? Obviously he’s just keeping the seat warm for and tutoring Acie Law. Bibby will almost certainly be gone next year unless Acie Law proves to be a waste of a lottery pick.

  20. Myrie says:

    Question to all:

    Please explain for me…

If you are a RESTRICTED free agent and you sign an offer sheet and your current team matches the offer, are you REQUIRED to go back to your current team? Do you HAVE to?

Can you current team match an offer and you (as the player) still turn them down and sign elsewhere?

  21. doc says:

Myrie if your team matches you go back to them.

  22. jay dub says:

I think bibby may be in the last year of his contract. does anyone think the hawks will match if the 76ers throw 15 mil out there? I think either will be a great fit for the 76ers, hope they land one of them. let’s become contenders again

  23. jamesinva says:

end up with the lake show? lakers arent even in the mix for these guys. yet another idiot laker fan talkin nonsense

  24. GEE...Arch Rivals Champion says:

Josh should stay put cause they have something good working in Atl. Brand should most def. stay in LA and ball with Baron. Sixers are doing right to go after both but i hope they end up with neither. Then they have to just take next best thing whoever that is.

  25. D'Antonio says:

15 mil for Bibby ? Let’s say that no one read that…
    - Brand is staying in LA to play with Baron and make some movies.
    - Hawks have too many youngs to pay and will shy away of paying Smith big money: the 76ers just landed themselves a new beast.

Are they overpaying him though ?

Looks to me like both him and Iggy rely too much on their athleticism and are not great overall basketball players…

  26. doc says:

Damn Gee why all the hate on the Sixers.Thats why Yao gonna tear his ACL in the Olympics and Tracy gonna start crying and strain his little soft ass neck tryin to hide the tears,Scola dont come back to America,Laundry and Hayes go overseas to get paid,Skip gets shot at the rucker and yall go 0-82 with Battier yall leading scorer at 16 a game with Tum Tum a close second with 12.

  27. Dennis Castro says:

Doc and Jay Dub, word up. Stefanski’s already doing a great job cleaning up the contract mess that BK worked so hard to develop.

And, yallalreadyknow, yalldontknowish. First of all, Minnesota took that deal because they got a 1st round pick. Remember, they haven’t had many of those in the past few years(Joe Smith).

And if you watched the Sixers this year, you’d know that Dre Miller doesn’t need blazing fast speed or great athleticism to be effective. He’s one of the smartest players in the L, knows his limitations, and runs a team almost flawlessly. He’s the type of player that will be effective well into his 30’s because of these traits. Plus Cassell has got about 7-8 years on him.

  28. GEE...Arch Rivals Champion says:

doc if all that happens I ain’t trippin lol, will just give us room for new blood lol. Don’t be shocked if Yao gets hurt for real in the lympics lol.

Anyway not so much hatin on the Philly, it’s just more of I like what Atl has going and I don’t want to see it broken up. And I want to see that Elton and Baron combo make some noise.

Philly is straight with Iggy, Dre Mil and company. So I am like if Atl can keep what they have and then Elton stay in LA then Philly can get someone else. So it’s an all win for everyone.

Real question though is what do LA or ATL do if they lose those guys…ut oh.

  29. K Dizzle says:

    @ post 27
good point on Dre. Sam’s got years and Dre’s never missed time due to injuries but Sam misses chunks. Dre’s gotta be the most underrated point guard on a playoff team?
Some Philly fans be shittin on Iguodala like he’s a scrub, maybe they should look at a sign and trade straight up: Smoove for Iggy ….and still go after Brand

In all this talk about JSmoove and Brand, we gon have a situation where Smoove gets Rashard Lewis overpaid just cuz Philly gonna make a ridiculous offer which ATL gonna have to match? ATL got a good thing goin on, Smoove need to pull a Gil and leave the extra 10M on the table plus ATL can offer that 6th year which Philly can’t

    @ jamesinva
If I’m Mitch Kupchak, I’m at least callin the Hawks to see what they would take in a sign and trade for Smitty : I love Lamar and Sasha or Farmar(well maybe not Farmar), but I’d give em up for Smoove

  30. miamiVIS3 says:

Damn a just because he traded KG every time Kevin McHale has to get hated every time he makes a trade? No Booth won’t play but yes his contract however small it might be is expiring. So can someone please explain to me what’s bad about two contracts that expire before 2010 (Carney comes off the books that year) and at the very least the potential for someone who can bring athleticism abd shooting of the bench(Carney)is a bad thing?

  31. Bron42 had springs before slamball says:

how is it breakin news when I broke the news 3 articles ago during your summer league blog lol

  32. doc says:

I like that trade Smooth for Iggy and still get Brand.Yall think Iggy the shit because they only show his highlights out of Philly. He stepped it up this year but it was to a point when he dunked you were mad because thats all the fuck he do.I dont think he a scrub I just dont think he as good as people say.Not a franchise player at all.0%

  33. doc says:

    Iggy is Udoka with hops.

  34. kobeef says:

    @Celts
I’m thinking if Philly offers $15million per Atlanta will walk away. They have Marvin and Horford to re-sign soon and JJ is already signed to a bid deal so paying JSmoove $15 million means they can’t sign some of their other young forwards. Considering Josh has some attitude issues (gave the Hawks fans the finger a while back) Josh is looking like he’ll be a sixer - which is a good look for Philly.

    @KDizzle & Doc
Atlanta does not need Iggy ’cause they have JJ (Iggy is a 2 guard who can play some SF) so a sign and trade doesn’t make sense - unless ATL could get Iggy and Dalembert for Smoove.

  35. Justin Solomon says:

Do not be surprised if Brand hooks up with the Sixers and old teammate Andre Miller. Brand is playing in a charity game this weekend in Philly and it is odd considering every other player in the game has philly ties. Perhaps Brand is in town to sign with the Sixers and immediately show that he is a community guy. Maybe be true, maybe way off, but interesting nonetheless.

  36. sixers fan says:

carney should stay and no booth Louis.A

  37. sixers fan says:

we can still get josh smith baby

  38. Talented says:

Damn they serious bout this huh. I wonder where JSmoove gonna end up
