the big thing for those nba players, while it is all about the money, the euro is worth what 1.5 times what the dollar is these days? so where clubs are paying 20 mil after taxes it is like paying 12-15 mil after taxes in euro. it is all in how you percieve the money to be. to a person in the usa 20 mil looks good, to a euro player it is nothing special but guys like childress are looking at that 20 mil which is still better then what he would get here (not that much better but he doesnt have to compete with others for his spot and playing time)

Oh and forgot to add this to my last post...

The reason I think that more NBA players might head overseas is not solely due to Childress leaving, but also the fact that now I think more European teams will start offering contracts to NBA players. Honestly, how many contract offers from overseas do players in the NBA get when they are free agents? I'm gonna guess very few. Now, if clubs abroad think that they might have a legit chance to sign someone, maybe they will offer more money and better deals? Just a thought...

Yeah all you guys are right. Apparently the figures we got about it being a 3-year 20 mil. deal was AFTER the taxes had been taken. That's still better than the 6.5 mil he was offered by the Hawks BEFORE taxes were added into that equation.

Rangerjohn, you are right I didn't really know what I was talking about. At least he gets the house, car, maid service, cell phone, etc. haha

Childress's pay technically is not tax free. Idea is that he basically is being grossed up. He is getting paid about $10 million a year or so, but he will take home 6-7 million $ in the end (after whatever applicable taxes).

sorry but as long as childress is a us citizen and he spends more then 6 months here as his permanent residence, he has to pay taxes on what ever money he makes, then where ever he is living the rest of the time (ie where his check comes from) may have a tax he has to pay on his income also.

he may inturn have to pay taxes 2 times on the contract. all depends on how it is set up and how his citizenship and time in country works. there are very few professions in the world that get "tax free" with the civilian contractors in iraq being one

The issue with players not getting paid on time is probably with the lower leagues and teams, whereas Childress is going to Olympiakos, a much more renowned team that will most likely give him what they said he would get (6.66 mil a year if its 3-year 20 mil.)

And to the point about how they pay for your house car and cell phone and all that, I mean, don't get me wrong I would love to play in the NBA, but let's be honest about what most of the ballplayers' income goes towards: houses and cars. So if I'm getting that already, I'm literally BANKING. Can't blame Childress at all...

What's gotta be making owners and GMs around the league sweat is the fact that if a player (like a restricted FA) accepts the contract of a Euro team, then the NBA team he played for has no way of being able to match that offer since it's not from another NBA team. Most people forget that draft picks are like investments for the future, and if your investment is just going to up and move, it leaves the team in a pretty sorry situation. So far Childress has been the biggest name to have this happen to him, but I compare this to the situaton the MLS is in. The MLS gets players that are considered washed up or not worthy of playing in Europe anymore, and they get paid and get a lot of hype. I bet soon that's what'll happen with the older guys in the NBA who are past their prime but could still get a fat paycheck overseas. I never thought that day would come, but it seems like it's approaching rapidly...

Don't forget not only is Childress's money tax-free, he also gets free housing, a car and driver, free cell phone, etc..so he will be pocketing most of that money.

Commenting on people hating on Steph M, if Marbury has played for the Mavs instead of Kidd, it would have been the same results...not taking away Kidd's pass first mentality, but I thought Avery limited Kidd or Kidd didn't know the offense...

It's the system....Kidd would thrive in a D'Antoni system..just as Nash did....

Steph would thrive in the Mavs system....

can anyone tell me...what was the knicks system?
