Breaking Down the Marcus Camby Trade, Jerryd Bayless Goes Off, and the newest Globetrotters
What were the Nuggets thinking trading Marcus Camby to the Clippers for a second-round pick? Arguably the worst defensive team in the League letting go of its two best defenders — Eduardo Najera and Camby — for nothing and next to nothing doesn’t make much sense; this has to be part of a bigger plan, maybe one where Denver uses what was Camby’s money ($8 million this season) to bolster a big-time offer for Josh Smith or Emeka Okafor. But the problem with that is the risk factor: J-Smoove and Okafor are restricted free agents, so if the Hawks or Bobcats, respectively, match the offer sheet, the Nuggets are left holding the bag with Kenyon Martin, Nene and Steven Hunter as their big men going into next season, and the remaining free-agent crop of power forwards and centers is generally weak … From L.A.’s side it’s a total steal — getting a shot-blocking and rebounding machine who can get out and run and doesn’t need the ball to be effective to play with athletic perimeter guys like Baron Davis, Eric Gordon and Al Thornton — until you remember they already have Chris Kaman at center, and neither Camby nor Kaman has the game that would translate to moving to power forward. (The Spurs using David Robinson and Tim Duncan at the same time, or the ’80s Rockets using Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon only worked because Duncan and Hakeem were so talented offensively.) The Clips are probably looking to deal Kaman or Camby (to ATL for Josh Smith?), but isn’t there a rule where they have to wait 30 days to trade Camby? … If the Nuggets don’t make a big trade or signing, the person we’ll feel most sorry for is Allen Iverson. He could have opted out and gotten far away from this mess, but he could end up stuck playing on another team that just isn’t good enough to get him that championship … Kings/Blazers was one of the better summer league games we’ve seen so far this year. Jerryd Bayless (26 pts, 6 rebs) was killing it again, attacking relentlessly and getting to the line 16 times, and hitting some big shots down the stretch to help force overtime. In the extra frame Sacto’s Jason Thompson (17 pts, 9 rebs) converted an and-one with 12 seconds left that put the Kings up by one, and on the Blazers’ ensuing possession, Bayless unleashed a nasty crossover to get himself open but short-armed a jumper that would’ve been the game-winner … Patrick Ewing Sr. was being interviewed courtside, and when the discussion inevitably turned to Kings rookie Patrick Ewing Jr., the cameras cut over to Ewing Jr., who was sitting on the bench with his mouth hanging open looking like he’d been stumped by an LSAT question … The Harlem Globetrotters took Pat Jr. with the #1 pick in their draft earlier this week. Now is it really a “draft” when there’s only one team picking and some of the players already belong to other pro teams? Did the Washington Generals get to pick too and we just didn’t hear about it? After Ewing Jr., the ‘Trotters took Sonny Weems (Nuggets/Arkansas), Will Bullard (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), Tay Fisher (Siena), Longar Longar (Oklahoma) and Donald Thomas (an 2008 Olympic high jumper who played college ball a few years ago). It’s obvious why Thomas got picked, and Ewing Jr., Weems and Bullard were all in this year’s NCAA dunk contest. (Bullard didn’t even play that much in college; he just has stupid hops.) Fisher is a three-point specialist. But the Longar pick was strange. He’s not ridiculously tall at 6-foot-11, and we’ve never seen anything to suggest he’s got some circus-show handle or crazy dunking ability … (Yes, we know we just spent an entire paragraph breaking down the Harlem Globetrotters’ draft strategy. Back to the summer leagues) … With Amir Johnson and Arron Afflalo on the court, we didn’t think the Pistons’ summer squad would be that bad without Rodney Stuckey (toe) in the lineup. Turns out they were even worse. Detroit was held to single-digits in the second and fourth quarters, and scored 59 points total while getting trounced by the Bucks. Johnson didn’t do anything to stand out (6 pts, 3 blks, 9 fouls), and point guard stand-in Will Bynum (who already has a sizable contract overseas to fall back on) lost out in his head-to-head with Ramon Sessions, who scored 21 … Marco Belinelli and D.J. Augustin put on a show during Bobcats/Warriors, with each guy scoring 30 points apiece. Belinelli is supposed to do that, but D.J. is a point guard who has been gunning shots all week in Vegas. Every game he’s played so far he’s taken the most shots on the team, and last night he had zero assists … If yesterday was any indication, the Sixers will demo teams in garbage time once the games start to count. Jason Smith, Marreese Speights and Thaddeus Young — basically their second-string front line — combined for 48 points against the Lakers, with Smith sticking a long jumper that iced it in the fourth … Dawan “Doc” Robinson update: 13 minutes off the bench, zero points (0-for-2 FG’s), three rebounds … Have you see Yao Ming’s special-edition Olympic kicks? Reebok unveiled the sneakers that’ll be worn by Yao while the rest of his team are rocking the China Hyperdunks. Check ‘em out HERE … Last night some of the Dime crew was at the N.E.R.D. concert put on by Converse at NYC’s Santos Playhouse. Aside from Pharrell and the guys, Pusha T from The Clipse was also in the house, along with Amanda Diva and a few of the New York Giants and New York Jets. We’ll have a full recap up on the site later today … After some talks with Jason Williams and exploring a possible trade for Javaris Crittenton, the Magic settled on Anthony Johnson as their guy to back up Jameer Nelson. That’s the right move, getting a solid vet who knows his role and won’t rock the boat if Jameer falters but keeps the starting job … We love Keyon Dooling’s choice of phrase to explain why he and the Magic couldn’t work out an agreement: “Conflict of interest,” Dooling told the Orlando Sentinel. Yeah, he was interested in making a certain amount of money, and Orlando wasn’t interested in paying him that much … We’re out like Steven Hunter starting …

For real DIME nice Rocket coverage during the summer, even the whole if you were GM deal. Specially considering the GM sucks but he did nice on the draft once they got Dorsey and Green…Maarty…not so much.
Yea i am wondering what was A.I. really thinking. I am thinking he is like me in that he is loyal to a fault. It’s hurt me in the past being like that and appears to be hurting dude now. It’s one thing to be dedicated to an organization but when that organization doing you wrong, first with a horrible coach and then with a dumb trade ..unless they do something smart. then yea you should be out.
Melo and A.I. have to be pissed but perhaps Denver will pull off something. Although long as George Karl at the controls it won’t matter what they do, they will always underachieve again.
I never been to a Globetrotter game are they any count fa real? Are they really worth going to?
I know a lot of cats prolly like the Yao shoe but I think them joints is ugly, Chinese tradition or not.
That was cold on the Ewing Jr. LSAT deal…to funny.
Just really hoping that Tracy doesn’t go to Detroit. If he does I understand I just hope he don’t.

Fuck it, buy him out and let him sign with the celtics like the mavs did finley before he went to the spurs.
@gee
the games are alright, I mean i wouldnt spend a ton of money for it though unless i was takin a lil kid or something. the players are legit though. Denver should have let someone else go if they could have not Camby, A.I. or Melo. but any of them others. As hard as it is to get a legit center that was crazy.
Ain’t like they running a program like Denvers in football with runningbacks where you can just plug in a dude and he is 1000 yard rusher. Who ever fills Camby slot more than likely ain’t gonna give you all that Camby offered.
And Josh Smith need to stay in Atl anyway cause they got something good going. I really hope he is smart and stays. Him and Atl. fit well together.

Seems to me if you’re the highest paid player on the team you should be the one getting the team the championship not expecting role players and your supporting cast getting you the chip.

Hey Dime always good stuff on the summer league games. Keep it up.
Why do the Nuggets let someone like Camby go when he always been good for them. The guy is one of the best rebounders out there right now, and like it was mentioned he was the only guy playing D on the squad (Ed Najera is a good stopper for them also). The Nuggets have to be planning something big, whether its getting Josh Smith or Okafor or looking to the future, wwwaaayyy into the future. I do feel bad for AI. It seemed that he was on a team that would get him a chip and now look what happened. And yea you got Melo on the team, but for real guy just looks to get his and thats it.
I don’t understand, the globetrotters are really drafting players … seriously I want to know if the the Wash Generals are having their own draft, and if they are I want to know who their drafting, you know player name and if they have ever played basketball before.

D.I. Dollar says:
As a true Clip Dawg fan (what up Billy?) all I can say is that this has been one of the most roller coaster off seasons I can remember. Not since the days of Elgin Baylor trying to figure out whether or not we should re-sign Loy Vaught have the Clippers upper brass had to actually work. Whether or not we keep one or both (keeps Kamans minutes down and possibly prolongs his career {this can also be said about Camby}), this has got have BD and Eric Gordon literally giddy with excitement at the notion that the ball is theirs and they can do with it what they want. Even if they do keep them both although VERY slow the duo could play together at the same time. Kaman has a nice (although underated) low post offensive game and Kaman can just play the week side clean up man. Now if the Lakers can swing the Artest trade (and boy do the Lakers have to do something quick about the way they have been shown up in by the “other” LA team this summer) all I can say is any visiting team coming in on that Laker/Clipper road trip through Staples better be ready to work for their points. I can already hear the chants now DE-FENSE!!! DE-FENSE!!! DE-FENSE!!!
Now on the Nuggets side (thank you Denver by the way), lets just say your a betting GM who needs some money and has a player to move and somebody says to you, “hey, I’ll trade you our Second Round Pick for your 34 year old undersized, over acheiving center”. You have to sit back and think that unloading 8 milli off the books this year and getting what could possibly be the 1st pick in the second round (I know it’s conditional but what could conditions possibly be for a 2nd Round Pick???), which to a lot of teams is considered to almost be another 1st Rounder. Or they could be thinking maybe Melo or AI or even JR Smith and that pick might be enough to get themselves another piece (or peices, Rasheed Wallace and Chauncy going home perhaps?).
I’m out like anybody waiting for Jarred Bayless to pass the ball to them.
July 16th, 2008 at 10:58 am

Oh and by the way, Nuggets got Nene back. I thought the guy was going through something really serious health wise. Now he’s back with them. You’re right about the Nuggets dumping salary by trading Camby to L.A. Apparently they get rid of some $40 million from their luxury tax and salary cap. But still, your not even guaranteed a 2nd-round pick, as you said, and they did that? I mean, if I’m a Nuggets fan (what kinda nuggets we talkin bout? hehe) I am infuriated at this move. Like someone else mentioned, unless Nugs management has some crazy ass trade in the works or some signing of a free agent (Emeka?) this might go down as one of the dumbest moves by any team in any league. Remember how mad Pop was when the Spurs found out Pau had gone to the Lakers for pretty much nothing (okay, nothing, too much credit for Kwame…)? I wonder how he feels about this…

If they were willing to pay Posey for 2 year they would had to pay the luxury tax this year and probably next year anyway. Next year their payroll is only 62-65 million and the year after that Ray Allen contract fall off. The Celts payroll in year 3 of Posey deal would be below the salary cap. They will have to pay Rondo in 3 years but Rondo is not going to command max money. This was a stupid reason to let Posey go and you probably just cost us a chance to repeat.

Okay, I bleed Gold and Blue. I was excited, to say the least, about AI coming to my team! I’ve seen absolute brilliance in this team and then completely and utter stupidity from the coach, team and especially, the front office. We had a 20th pick in the draft with AT LEAST 3 different players that could have helped up on this team. They blew it off (Not that Karl would have played them anyway because he “didn’t know them very well”.) We have two very injury prone players at the 4 and 5 and if one of them goes, as of now, we’re screwed. The 4 men in the front office are dumbasses, (understatement of the year!). They are not trying to win a championship, they are trying to free up cap space. That’s it! There is no reason, no plan, no nothing. One of the dumbasses is constantly on the radio talking about how the city needs to trust what they’re doing. What!!!??? I’m tired and hurt that they have no intention in gettin AI a ring that he deserves. I would hate to see him go, but I understand why he would leave. They’re not even paying JR Smith what he deserves and he’s talkin about walking if they don’t pony up the dough. And mark my words, Nuggets fans, bet they let him go, because that is just how stupid our front office is. Kroenke do something, and do it now.
I’m thru…

I really hope the Nuggets have a plan in place after this trade (hopefully its trading Iverson and putting him out of his misery). Because if they don’t, their FO is about as dumb as a bag of rocks. I agree that this was a salary dump trade and hopefully they have a plan, but I have to add that I am extremely dissappointed that they made a major trade for a guy like Iverson when they were not ready to win now. They made a trade for Iverson and had no plan in place…just expected the guy to go there and make magic. They never went out and got the proper back court mate for him, Steve Blake was cool but they let him go. You don’t make a major trade for a player like Iverson without a plan in place. He’s a very complex player, you can’t just place him in the backcourt with anybody.
Right now the Nuggets organization are looking like frauds. They acted as if they were ready to win when they traded for Iverson..but in reality were not. The fact of the matter is, they made the trade for Iverson and did nothing else significant after that to better that team. Their FO sat back and watched a defensive lacking team throughout the season and did nothing to better the situation before the trade deadline this past season. They watched players get fed up and tune out their Coach, a Coach that has made too many mistakes to still be around, watched their team get embarrassed and meltdown in the playoffs this season…and still did nothing about the Coaching situation. I sat back and watched Carmelo fraud his way through the season, acting like he was ready to win when Iverson got there, when reality says that he is immature, not a real franchise player and is not ready (if ever) to help lead a team anywhere. He just hid behing Iversons leadership this entire time, its ridiculous.
At this point I don’t care what the Nuggets do as long as Iverson gets out of that mess. I’ve read some Nuggets fan boards and some fans have the nerve to question Iverson..mad at him for not coming in and turing an already flaud team with a flaud system into a contender. When the fact of the matter is the guy wa stheir best player this season and if it wasn’t for him, the Nuggets wouldn’t even have made the playoffs at all. If Iverson leaves they will most certainly be up sh*t creek..and I agree with everyone that says Iverson should have left his loyalty at the back door, opted out and seen what else was out there for him. I’m starting to think that the Nuggets FO traded for Iverson just for ticket and jersey sales…because at this point they have gotten more from him then he has from them. Their FO should be embarressed for going out and making a major trade for a player of Iversons caliber if they weren’t ready to win. Get out of there Iverson! They don’t have a plan. Then Melo can have his team completely back to himself, him and Karl deserve eachother.

I agree 100% with #63. The Nuggets are just looking so pathetic. They traded away their 1st round pick in draft and have made 0 moves. 0 moves but lose players. I hope AI leaves if they are going to keep Karl and not add anyone else worth mentioning. To just dump salary and get NOTHING in return is so disappointing. Camby should have gotten more. And to make matters worse, you GIVE Camby to a team that may end up bumping you out of playoffs? At least send him back East for nothing!!!! IDIOTS are keeping KARL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They will not make it past 1st round with him as coach! I got so angry watching games last year. He sits there like a bump on log, he makes horrible subs, a player will be hot in 1st quarter then sit the bench well into 2nd quarter killing all momentum. He did’t call time outs at good times either. He may be a good dude but he is just in need of a change of scenery! AI PLEASE GET OUT!!! I can’t watch another season of this mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dunno about multi-million dollar deal, Abbot and Givony made it sound like he’d only be worth a couple hundred thousand. Hope things work out for him and a shame we don’t get to watch him play. Also, I hope the buyout that’s in his contract won’t scare nba teams off.
