Ron Artest Trade Fallout, Okafor and Deng Get Rich, and Channing Frye is the new Gilbert Arenas

Ron ArtestRon Artest, Dime #21

The Rockets have been like the Cavs of the West for the last couple of years; maybe they were busting their asses behind the scenes, but on the surface the franchise seemed content with making run after fruitless run with their big-name superstar(s) — T-Mac and Yao in Houston, LeBron in Cleveland — while every other relevant team was making significant improvements. Late yesterday, though, the Rockets pulled the trigger on a big move: acquiring Ron Artest from the Kings in exchange for Bobby Jackson, a #1 pick, and a player to be named later, presumably rookie Donte Greene. Artest solves a few of Houston’s problems. Obviously the defense gets better, they get a perimeter guy besides T-Mac who’s willing (often too willing) to let it fly in pressure situations, and they get some toughness and swagger to add to the mix. If you had a healthy Yao on the court and Ron-Ron around to body-up Deron Williams a little during this spring’s Jazz/Rockets series, the Rockets could have definitely advanced to the next round and been a tough out for the Lakers. If only the brand-new Big Three can stay healthy … T-Mac to a Houston TV station: “(Artest) brings a mental and physical toughness. He brings a guy that competes at a high level on the basketball court. Defensively, he’s tough. Offensively, he is a force to be reckoned with. He’s probably one of the most difficult guys to guard on the perimeter because of his size, because of his strength.” … From the Kings’ side, we like the trade if in fact the unnamed player is Donte Greene. They’d been trying to unload Artest for a while, and although they didn’t land a bigger name like Lamar Odom, Tayshaun Prince or some of the others that had been popping up in the millions of Artest trade rumors, ask any rebuilding organization and they’ll gladly take draft picks and young talent. Plus B-Jax shores up the point guard spot, previously in the hands of Beno Udrih (are you completely sold on him yet?), second-round pick Sean Singletary, and summer-league signee Bobby Brown … Earlier in the day, the big news was Emeka Okafor coming to terms with the Bobcats on a six-year, $72 million contract, which was followed later on by Luol Deng reportedly agreeing to an identical deal with the Bulls. We definitely were not expecting those kind of dollars for Okafor, who turned down $12M-per last summer and went on to have a contract year that was solid (13.8 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 1.7 bpg) but didn’t blow anyone away. But everyone around the franchise says he’s the key to their defense, and Larry Brown is a defensive coach; he’ll try to mold ‘Mek into what he had with Ben Wallace in Detroit and Dikembe Mutombo in Philly. Deng also didn’t seem in line for that kind of money, but his contract year wasn’t a statistical disaster (17 ppg, 6.3 rpg), and he’s still got the ’07 playoffs on his resume when he destroyed Miami … The Bobcats’ investment in Okafor begs the question: Is he The Man in Charlotte? We looked at who should get the Alpha Dog tag for that team, as well as others in need of an identity, including the Nuggets (A.I. or ‘Melo?), Warriors (Monta or S-Jack?) and Grizzlies (O.J. or Rudy?) to name a few … With Okafor and Deng getting $70M, then Monta and Andris Biedrins falling into the $60M range, where does that leave Josh Smith and Andre Iguodala? A.I.2 seems certain to come back to Philly and make a run with Elton Brand, whereas J-Smoove wants out of Atlanta ASAP (and the team signing his ex-AAU teammate Randolph Morris won’t change that). Even if we don’t know their respective destinations, each can make an easy case for exceeding Okafor/Deng dollars: they were both #2 guys (at worst) ’08 playoff teams … And on that note, do you think Ben Gordon deserves more money than Luol Deng? … As expected, the Knicks waived Taurean Green and Bobby Jones — their haul in the Renaldo Balkman trade — and Green reportedly already has a big offer from CAI Zaragoza (Spain). This is the same club that recently employed Lionel Chalmers and Heshimu Evans, and not so long ago was home to the infamous Lester Earl … Between the Baron Davis signing, the Marcus Camby swindling and the perfectly sensible Eric Gordon and Al Thornton picks in ’07 and ’08, you might be surprised to know that Elgin Baylor is still the Clippers’ GM, and Donald Sterling is still the owner. This has all been so unlike them, you had to assume someone else was calling the shots. Asked about the Ricky Davis signing, Baylor said that after L.A. whiffed on Kelenna Azubuike, it had come down to Ricky Buckets or Devean George. Question: If you’re running a team, would you be the type to gamble on a talented player who is a potential headcase, or would you go with a less-talented guy if you knew for sure he won’t cause any locker-room problems? In other words, are you the Oakland Raiders or the San Antonio Spurs? … Some of the Dime crew spent Tuesday at the NBA Rookie Photo Shoot, held annually at the Knicks practice facility, where the rooks get their pics taken for team media guides and their first trading cards. Here’s a recap of the 2007 rookie shoot, which was the last time any of us saw Josh McRoberts in a basketball uniform. While it’s a good time for the Dime crew to knock out a bunch of interviews and catch up with the guys we hung out with at the Draft, the downside is you sometimes get stuff like THIS. We’ll have a full report later today on the site … Anyone arguing that college athletes need to get paid should use this as evidence: Turns out Roy Hibbert had to wait for that NBA check before he could even get a haircut. Tragic … One story that couldn’t wait: Less than an hour into the shoot, Marreese Speights managed to break a chair by simply sitting in it, then when one of our guys asked him about Elton Brand, Speights said he “really hadn’t seen him play.” The man’s been in the League for 10 years and you haven’t seen him play? The Clips and those terrible post-MJ Bulls weren’t national TV regulars, but Elton was in the playoffs recently and he did play at Duke before that … Airplane farts, dragon breath and things that smell like “hot horse piss.” Who knew Channing Frye was so funny? After reading this, you have to believe Frye spends HOURS watching stuff like “South Park” and Adult Swim … We’re out like Hibbert’s ‘fro …

If the Rockets can stay healthy, I say the Ron-Ron move makes them better than San Antone but still behind the Lakers. Could you imagine in a game when Adelman could have T-Mac playing point, Ron at the 2, Battier at 3, Scola/Landry at the 4 and Yao at the 5? Tell me who gonna score on that?

BREAKING NEWS – The Miami Beloved Rick Ross is a liar and a fake!!!

    Screw Rick Ross
Despite denials, records show rap star worked as corrections officer
JULY 21–Apparently desperate to distance himself from any affiliation with law enforcement, the rapper Rick Ross has recently denounced as fake photos purporting to show him in a former career as a Florida prison guard. But Department of Corrections (DoC) records show that Ross, whose raps detail the Miami gangster lifestyle and his supposed days trafficking cocaine, did, in fact, work as a correctional officer for 18 months. Ross (real name: William Leonard Roberts) was appointed a prison guard in December 1995 at a salary of $22,913.54, according to the below personnel record, which was provided to TSG by Jo Ellyn Rackleff, a DoC spokesperson. The rapper’s social security number is identical to that of the jail guard. According to the official document, Ross was earning $25,794.34 when he resigned in June 1997. After graduating from the DoC training academy, Ross was assigned to the South Florida Reception Center in Dade County (the lockup is one of three statewide that serves as an intake facility for new prisoners). When a photo of a uniform-clad Ross surfaced last week on MediaTakeOut.com, the 32-year-old performer claimed to AllHipHop.com that unnamed “online hackers” put “my face when I was a teenager in high school on other peoples’ body. If this shit was real don’t you think they would have more specifics, like dates and everything?” He added, “Fake pictures are created by the fake, meant to entertain the fake.” The photo, which you can find here, shows a 19-year-old Ross at a DoC ceremony (he was part of the department’s 60th graduating class). He is pictured shaking hands with Marta Villacorta, who then headed the South Florida Reception Center. Villacorta, now the department’s South Florida regional director, was identified by Rackleff, who examined the photo Ross claims was Photoshopped. In a recent videotaped interview, Ross replied, “No, that’s not true” when asked if he had worked as a prison guard. He claimed that the phony story was being circulated by detractors upset by his success in the rap world, where, “I came out of nowhere and just took over the streets.” (2 pages)

Paul Pierce says he’s the best player in the world
    By J.E. Skeets
Finals MVP Paul Pierce, who recently spent three days at a ball camp in Madrid, is making, ahem, news about what he said to a Spanish reporter. The money translation, via RedsArmy: “Q: Is Kobe really the best player in the world? Pierce: I don’t think Kobe is the best player. I’m the best player. There’s a line that separates having confidence and being conceited. I don’t cross that line but I have a lot of confidence in myself.” Surprisingly, Spurs fans seem more upset by this than actual Lakers fans. (Update: OK, Lakers Nation is pretty upset, too.)

ron artest on the rockets. ’bout time the rockets do something to advance.

where is ron going to play? i thought the 2guard spot was for mcgrady and the 3spot was for shane battier. i guess they just gonna move shane puss b*tch ass to the bench.

side note here for dime crew and NYers:

its been said that ron artest and rafer alston really REALLY do NOT get along. from way back in the day. practice is gonna be fun in h-town

  • Tru Face

Wow. Finally, I can see my team getting pass the 1st and maybe even more! Can we get the title now? Haha just kidding! Seriously though, Yao, T-Mac and Artest is a matchup nightmare for teams everywhere.

Best part, they hardly gave up anything! Donte Greene wasn’t going to contribute much this year. In fact, GM Morey said he would spend lots of time in the D-League. So the Rockets get a player that can contribute right NOW. Yao and T-Mac aren’t getting any younger so its important you go all in now instead of waiting for a rookie to develop.

  • BxBaller

Those ‘Zona guys sure are funny, Gil, Frye, RJ. Seriously, as much as I think Charlotte overpaid for Okafor, they needed to. They would have had a terrible year with May, Othella Harrington, and whoever else they got as their bigs.

So what now the Rockets got Battier and Artest to lock dudes up on the perimeter, and Yao intimidating dudes in the paint. I’d be hella surprised to see teams score in the 90′s against them next year.

  • Celts Fan

@Ranger, that was out a few days ago. You want your superstar to think that way (even if it’s clearly not true,) just like you want Team Australia (or any other sacrificial lamb in the Olympics) to say they’re gonna beat the US. We’ll all laugh it off, but if you don’t think like that, why show up?

  • doc

Houston can make all the moves they want but until Yao andT-Mac play a whole season together they aint going nowhere. And I dont got both of them lasting this year either.@Bigdog-Assits cant tell you if a person gunning.Early Mike,Kobe, and AI made them passes where they dribble around looking to score until the D was so tight somebody is waving they arms like pass me the fucking ball and then they still reluctantly give it up.Thats why whoever played with AI except Korver J was broke because you dont get the ball except once in a blue and the pressure on you if you miss because you was open but you’re cold as hell from not getting no shots. You can shoot 70 percent and be a gunner. You just make your shots. And Im not mad Mareese dont watch Elton. He’s only like 19 so when Brand was at Duke what was he 10?Plus most ballers I play with dont watch ball like that.Nobody in that summerleague team watched ball besides me.

  • doc

Plus Paul Pierce said what he was supposed to say.He just won a chip where he outplayed Kobe head to head.So it aint like he Cat Mobley or somebody.Believe it or not everybody in the league aint on Kobe’s nuts.

  • B

    Channing Frye is corny.

  • http://www.myspace.com/lilpenny23 JHov

I’m not saying he should be jocking Kobe I’m just saying he’s calling him out in a way..and that neither Lebron nor Kobe would actually tell a reporter.. “I’m the best player in the world!!”

  • http://GEE2.com GEE…them young kids don’t trouble me

Jim I ain’t whent no where pimpin lol. During the summer I am not on as much cause ya boi be trying to travel, sleep late as I can and what not. I still get on though. Matter of fact I was posting bout the whole trade deal last night.
I am prolly gettin on now when most cats sleep or said what they gotta say already. Still around though.

As I stated last night I am elated about the trade. I know most reports are saying that the Rockets are likely to get rid of Donte in the trade. I personally am hoping we can keep him and get rid of someone else. Cause he is young and can score, and with more experience he should do well. Rockets got defense so they need as many cats that can score for themselves as they can. Either way its a win win though.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Elton Brand gets injured again this year. Not to mention if AI2 stays and they do make the playoffs again he prolly won’t show up again. Even though they got Brand and all they prolly still won’t go further than they did this year.

What P-Dub said aint nothing to trip over. You can say just about anything you want when you the champ, but I doubt Kobe trippin. Kobe already know he is the top 1 or 2 in the L at this time. He prolly laughed at that mess. We all know with no KG and Allen, Paul might not even be gettin interviewed to say nuthin.

I am wondering how Ron and Alston gone get along, cause I to have heard mumblings about some beef in the past or something. Although if they start winning you know that makes everyone act right and get along.

  • doc

@jhov Im not saying you,Im saying you supposed to say that.Lebron say he better than everybody except when he hops on Kobe nuts and say he better.Kobe they dont even ask if somebody better than him except Mike.I respect the Truth more for this.

  • doc

What Kobe gonna do for getting called out that he didnt try to do in the chip.

  • the mamba

DAMN!! That pic of of the Lopez brothers is disturbing…

    Channing Frye is a fool.

  • http://GEE2.com GEE…them young kids don’t trouble me

See that Channing Frye thing is funny for anyone that has actually had to hold a fart on a train, plane or any other type of ride.
I am wondering about him trying to shoot threes though, I can see him pullin that in a game and gettin…yanked!
Still a funny story and I think I am going to start asking people how many years they got left instead of how long they been doing somethin.

Roy Hibb just looks slow, it wouldnt’ be so bad if he didn’t play slow either. I still hope he does ok in the L, but I ain’t tryna hear that he couldn’t get a cut till his NBA check. Granted he had a monsta on his dome but still you know he could have had one before the L.

LOL at the Lopez boys tryna look hard. One of them need to see Roy’s new haircut dude.

    Alpha dogs
AI on the nuggets (although I know he has to be hating he is there now)
    Rudy on the Grizz
    Monta on the Warriaz
    Wallace on the Cats
Who is the Alpha dog on the Knicks though?

  • http://GEE2.com GEE…them young kids don’t trouble me

  • doc

    The League is The Goal

  • OKC Hicks

Doc, great read about you man. Wherever you end up going, good luck and keep doing your thing son!

I gotta ask though: When you go play overseas, is there not much chemistry between teammates since there might be a language/cultural barrier? I was just wondering if teammates over there accept an American player just as the NBA teams might accept a foreign player, or is it a little more isolated and lonely? Either way good luck dawg!

  • doc

The players are cool. Some coaches hate on our style of play butfor the most part its all love. And the hoes show love also.
