Elton Brand’s Agent Stopped Returning the Clippers’ Calls

Right now, Clips’ owner Donald Sterling has got to be staring at a blank wall in his office, wondering how it came to this. Elton Brand had supposedly helped to lure Baron Davis back to his hometown, telling Boom that he would take less money if it meant uniting in L.A.

“Technically, Brand took a bigger offer from the 76ers, $82 million to the Clippers’ $75 million,” writes Mark Heisler. “However, with Sterling giving his basketball people a blank check, the Clippers were going to dump enough players to get to $81 million.

That offer was never relayed to Brand. The Clippers say at the end, agent David Falk stopped returning their calls.”

Some might say that Falk strong-armed Brand towards Philly because he wanted to exact revenge on the Clippers for crossing him in 1998 when they chose the Kandi man No. 1 instead of his client, Mike Bibby. But doesn’t Olowokandi’s career serve as enough punishment of itself?

Ultimately, it came down to Brand. If he wanted to stay at the Staples Center, he would have made this process far easier for Clippers management. Instead, he’ll play for a rumored five-year $82 million deal in Philly.

lost a whole lotta respect for Brand if this is all true. i thought he was one of the good guys…

  2. D'Antonio says:

This makes no sense. Do you tell one of your best friends to come and work with you and then screw your boss and stop returning his calls ?

I get the feeling that someone in the process is not telling the whole story…

agreed. as long as Brand didn’t specifically tell Baron he’d stay if he signed and/or at least gave him a head’s up that he might not stay, I have no problem with it, but I’m SHOCKED he left. I was the one saying, “no way he leaves LA. Movie business, friends w/ BAron, bla bla bla yesterday. Something’s not being told yet. There’s no way we know the whole story, it just doesn’t add up…

Doesn’t surprise me. The bottom line in sports is “GET YOURS WHILE YOU CAN”…………right Spree?

  5. fallinup says:

Money talks…money talks. I bet this didn’t even come to fruition until Philly dumped some players to Minny. Betcha Brand’s agent even told Philly that if they had enough money to beat out L.A….that he’s sign with them. I’m a little stunned…but in all, I’m just shaking my head at the fact that the Clippers will never ever…ever ever ever ever….catch a break.

Oh, and I think Philly just got pretty riggoddamn good if it’s core stays and Brand comes over.

  6. Blue says:

if that story does have any truth to it, then brand and his agent are some shady ass people. i was thinking it was a no brainer that brand resign with the clips. oh well, the clips have a whole lot of money, but nobody to spend it on!

  7. Arno says:

Il doesn’t make much sense to lure BD to LA one week before leaving. But does it make sense for Brand to go to a fastbreak team like Philly ?
Actually, the onbly winner is Brand’s agent.

  8. Kobeef says:

    @D’antonio and Celts

I really want to hear from Baron Davis on this. Like you say Baron and Brand were friends and Brand is a good person so it just doesn’t add up that Brand would walk out on this.

I’m hearing Baron is signed and committed but I just can’t see how Baron stays with the Clippers.

  9. yallallreadyknow says:

i gots no problem with it. players give false info to their teams all the time.
teams give false info to their players all the time (especially the..’we’re not looking to trade you’ line)

the shocker is that david falk is still involved in the nba

Donald Sterling’s sitting in his office staring at the wall? More like standing on the deck of his yacht, staring at the bottom of his brandy sniffer.

  12. yallallreadyknow says:

    sterling has other options…
…might as well make a huge splash for Josh Smith

Donald Sterling: “But I was really going to try and win this year…I really was…really!”

  14. chrisGO says:

does anyone know how much an agent makes off a deal? is it possible that Falk didn’t return LAC calls to make that much more of the impending contract?

i could be wrong, anyone with knowledge on how it all works?

  15. Myrie says:

agents can make up to 15% on the total value of a players contract; plus incentives

  16. Myrie says:

    it varies actually….
agent firms can make up to 15%…
independent agents (or the representing agent for the firm) can make less than 15% on a deal

  17. doc says:

Good fuck Sterling racist ass.He wouldnt even let black people live in a fucking building he owned but he want them to play ball for him.And do we really even know if Baron and Elton close friends.Besides a all star game or two when the fuck did they have time to chill. One from New York the other from LA.One played for Duke,Chicago, andLA while one played for UCLA,Charlotte,NO and GS.Yall act like they 1rst cousins or something.@sirak wtf is your definition of a good guy.Somebody who takes less money for what they command on the market.Well tell your job start paying you Mcdonalds money then asshole.

  18. dagwaller says:

    Power forwards from Duke lie.

  19. LakeShow84 says:

    Lol @ dagwaller

  20. K Dizzle says:

    lmao @ post 18

  21. Fish says:

Brand is not that much of a loss. True, you could have had two players close to their prime and been competitive but Brands game will decline pretty quickly. He has come off pretty serious injury and is an undersized forward who relies on his quickness. I would say he is already on the downward slope. Of course he is a hard worker so you never know.

Baron has an ability to get a lot out of those around him so they will still muddle through. If he doesn’t implode from being on another almost team.

  22. Willis says:

yeah @ post 18 and one of them is lying with Candace Parker so maybe its not such a bad thing.

  23. Meica says:

Beyond the possible betrayal/whatever this makes no sense to me. I’ve said it before that the Sixers should be a monster team next year, but would they be better than a possible Baron Davis/Elton Brand frontcourt? I’m not so sure. We obviously know that it takes eleven guys to win, but it’s also fairly obvious that the more go-to, big-time, superstars you’ve got on your team that the better off you’re going to be.

Even with Brand, I’ve got to be kind of skeptical that the Sixers can repeat what they accomplished last year. With the roster they had, no one expected them to perform any where near as well as they did, which makes me wonder if some of those players will return to their mediocre selves. You see it happen all of the time (look at the Bulls last year), it surprises me that Brand would rather take an extra seven mil than play with Davis.

  24. doc says:

@meica it suprises you that brand would take 7 mill instead of play wth Davis.WOW! you must be rich.

  25. ML says:

Doc what the fuck are you talking about. If i was you i would shut my mouth. I would knock you flat on your ass. You talk way too much shit for a dude that can’t play ball. Respond back if you want bitch. But come correct
