How Could Brandon Roy Improve His Game?

Brandon RoyRoy could improve off the ball

What’s the biggest knock on Brandon Roy’s game? He shot nearly 55% from the field last season, shared the rock real well (5.8 apg). But Roy is the first person to admit that he could be better playing off the ball.

I felt there were times last year … not that I hurt the team, but I could have been better if I was better off the ball,” Roy said. “If I was better coming off screens, better at running downcourt … instead I was looking to get the ball instead of running to the wing.”

So this summer, Roy’s incorporated a tough catch-and-shoot component to his workouts. He asks one of his boys to D up on him as if they were Raja Bell or Bruce Bowen, draped all over him as he tries to come around a screen. Once the ball hits his hands on a pass, he shoots it as quickly as possible.

He said he also works on sprinting from halfcourt to a spot on the floor, where he must catch a pass and shoot immediately.

“Not only does that help my shooting, but helps my conditioning,” Roy said. “There are times in a game when I would sprint down court and catch it and hold it because I was tired, when I need to go up and shoot it.”

Honing his two-guard skills will help Roy to smoothly transition between the point, shooting guard and small forward slots depending on who else Nate McMillan has out on the floor. And right now, Roy is excited to get on the court with Jerryd Bayless. It’s safe to say he’s a big fan of Bayless’ game.

“The reason why I see me playing with Jerryd is because he can guard points,” Roy said. “He may not be a one, but he can guard a one, so then it fits into exactly what we want to do. A lot of times with Jarrett and Blake, they would get frustrated because they were playing a two on offense. Whereas (Jerryd) is comfortable playing two on offense and he’s comfortable playing one on defense. That’s why I tell people who say he is not a point: ‘If he was a point, it would take away from what I do, so it’s almost fine that he’s not a point.”

This guy’s one of my favorite players in the League. Kinda funny he didn’t sniff Team USA as I see him being a staple there for years to come starting w/ the next World Championships. Kid’s top 10 in the league IMO and isn’t willing to settle on what he’s done so far. This team is a dynasty in waiting so long as Grandpa Oden comes back healthy…

    FEDRODOMOUS PREDICTS:

Portland and LA – Western Finals
Detroit and Boston – Eastern Finals

  3. Logan Light says:

This could be a problem for the L.

B Roy has got some real skill on the court – it’s just a shame that the west coast bias means that his television sightings aren’t very high… but I guess that will change all too soon.

    @Fed
    You crazy!! LOL!!!

I like Roy, dude seems humble and I think Portland gone wreck shop next year if everybody stays healthy. Not only has oden had health problems, so has Roy. The heel issues and feet issues? I just hope everyone is healthy so we can FINALLY see what we know they could be.

  5. Kobeef says:

Another slightly veiled plug for JBay…admit it dime: You have the man love for Bayless.

  6. J-Dot says:

Wow, super-impressed with Roy. You don’t hear about intense offseason workouts like this too often. I truly appreciate his attention to detail. This is one of those things we may forget about in a few years, but it could seriously propel Portland into the NBA’s elite class. Unfortunately, with his injury history, I have my concerns about him going at it so hard during the offseason, and a part of me wants to tell him to fall back. However, you have to get it while the getting is good, so if he feels alright, go get it! Here’s to a healthy season for Brandon Roy…

  7. dagwaller says:

    Hahaha, Fedrodomous.

Love to hear stories of players working hard. Hard not to root for Portland these days. They did a great job turning the public perception of that team around.

  8. YOUNGFED says:

Check out the spanish roster on si.com there whole DAMN team is from the NBA. “Houston We have a PROBLEM”

    Here’s some of the roster:
Spanish team featuring Pau and Marc Gasol, José Calderón, Rudy Fernández, Jorge Garbajosa, Raúl López and Juan Carlos Navarro.

They also got some 17 yr old (Ricky Rubio) that they’re calling the the best gaurd to come out of Spain. The next Drazen Petrovic

  9. Sith Lord 24 says:

Roy is good but top 10 in the league… dont know about that one

  10. Celts Fan says:

Fedrodamos hasn’t heard of Ricky Rubio? Damn, stop biting Ms. Cleo and go refine those skills man.

  11. Truth says:

    Yeah fed!!
If you haven’t heard of Ricky Rubio that’s a problem!!
Your predictions are bieng investigated by the FDA!! LOL!!!

  12. YOUNGFED says:

FEDRODOMOUS, Can’t know everything Celts. Sorry Bruh.

  13. YOUNGFED says:

Don’t really follow the Foriegners that much “Truth”. Most of them get to the league and are trash anyway like “Gallneri” or whatever his name is.

  14. Celts Fan says:

@Sith, I can see why you might disagree, but to me, the only guys that are definitely better are:

Kobe, KG, Dwight, LeBron, CP3, Deron, Timmy. You can add a healthy DWade to that list too.

    Besides that, I’ll take Roy.

  15. Imperial-Mel says:

Nex season will def. be intresting for sure

  16. Celts Fan says:

haha just playing Fed. Clever nickname. I don’t follow the foreigners that much either, but do yourself a favor and YouTube the kid and you’ll see why we know him. He looks legit and clowns guys regularly. At the least, it’s good for a laugh or 2…

  17. sxrs says:

  18. Luigi says:

Im not sure if roy is top 10 but i LOVE his game [no homo]
    hes mos def top 20

n Ricky Rubio is a SICKNESS BEAST dude. ive watched a televised game here in the US when Rubios team vs. some random team. omg that was AMAZING he is amazing. no lie hes gonnna be a breedmix of nash n gil.

but we dont really hear about this stuff often. we dont see our fav players do these things often. so its good to see Roy do these things. also ive noticed. everybody here almost has different teams they like but seem to all like Roy

    verry good

  19. YOUNGFED says:

Yeah Can’t YouTube @work that sites a lil too wild, plus I don’t really do the internet at home unless I’m downloading music Celts. But will see in 2 more years when he can come here (F@ckin’ Sterny Bum A$$). BTW F@CK DAVID STERN!!!!…..OK WHUUUUUSSSSAAAAAAAAA…….lmao

  20. Justice says:

umm top 10 is kinda crazy, but i like this guy roy but added to the list of better players should be pierce, and manu, i think he and joe johnson are right about at the same level in terms of talent imo

  21. I`CouldBeYourFather says:

Yeah, B-Roy’s game is nice…not in the top 10, maybe top 15…

@ Luigi – when you have to say (no homo) that tells people that you really are!

I’m out like the knicks making the playoffs…………………………………………………………………………..

  22. Celts Fan says:

wow, inexcusable for me to forget Pierce. I’ve only had season tickets his entire career…

I’d put Roy over Manu and JJ (though that’s close)

  23. doc says:

    He should work on everything.

  24. iain. says:

@doc – every great player picks one thing to really concentrate on each summer. You can’t work on everything all at once or you’ll end up being a pine rider in the summer league with no chance of getting on a squad this yea….oh wait.
