Knicks Want Jerome James to Retire … So Does Everyone Else

The New York Daily News is reporting that the Knicks are trying to push Jerome James to retire.
Are ready to throw up in your mouth a little? James played in just two games last season, earning more than $1 million per minute. And he’s under contract for two more years!
Can you think of a more undeserving contract in basketball history?

Spliff 2 My Lou says:
Yeah he ain’t giving up that buku money. The only other contract I can think of that was as undeserving as his was that of jim mcelvaine which was coincidentely tied to the supersonics as well.

D says:
Is it really his fault he got overpaid like that? I mean, would YOU retire? Not saying it’s right, but the Knicks are reaping what they sewed

@D
Agreed. The man cannot be faulted for taking what’s on offer.
The joys of pro sports…

Spliff 2 My Lou says:
True that D. I never feel sorry for any team who has overpaid for a player especially new york teams who seem to do that on the regular.
For those of you who don’t know who jim mcilvaine is I bet Austin could elaborate but he was signed by the sonics in the late 90’s to a 7 year 34 million contract plus incentives and never made more than TWO buckets in a game for the next 7 seasons.

Kobeef says:
Most undeserving contract
1. Keith Van Horn - $4.3 Million for 0 games of work
February of 2008, Van Horn signed a three-year deal with the Mavericks with only the first year guaranteed. That first year would earn him 4.3 million for less than half a season of work.
2. Steve Francis $32.4 million for maybe 10 games of work.
The Blazers agreed to pay Francis $30 million of the $34 million owed to him over the final two seasons of his contract. Francis then signed a one-year deal with Houston for $2.4 million

SparkyJ23 says:
James, who will earn $12.8 million over the next two years,
Stop!! $12.8 MILLION
Carry on
has every intention of playing next season and is even considering joining a group of veterans for voluntary workouts this weekend in Las Vegas. The Knicks have the option to simply release James, but his contract would still count against the salary cap. If James is forced to retire for medical reasons, the Knicks could petition the NBA for a medical exception to sign another player.
James, a lumbering 7-1 center, has not been fit for the past two years and has appeared in just 88 games since Isiah Thomas signed him to the full mid-level exception three years ago. Last season, James appeared in two games in mid-January and finished the year with four points and three rebounds in five minutes. There is little need for a player with James’ lack of speed and mobility to play in Mike D’Antoni’s system.

What about Danny Ferry - I’m sure he was paid a load for doing sweet FA

Agreed on the Ben Wallace mention.
That contract has been a complete bust. Hughes contract was bad but I would not have traded him for Wallace who does nothing for the Cavs.

Austin Burton says:
And as bad as Jerome is, I still thought Kelvin Cato was a worse player when he was on the Knicks. Watching Cato space out at Knicks games was hilarious. During a timeout he’d always we watching the crowd, staring off into Bolivian, checking out the dancers, etc.

J-Dot says:
Bolivian? Oblivion?
Who are we to say who deserves what? It kinda goes against what we’ve been taught about “hard work” and reaping the rewards accordingly, I understand that. But it’s a stretch to say that someone isn’t deserving of something, especially when that something is just money.
Jerome James SUCKS, but all he did was garner attention with that strong playoff performance many years ago. Not mad at it!!

How bout Matt Geiger’s contract? Signed a $52 million contract in ‘01 coming off a year where he put up 6 and 4 in 15 minutes in the regular season and then 3 and 1 in 8 minutes in the playoffs. He retired the next year “due to injuries” and was still making bank off the Sixers for about 4 or 5 more years.

John Starks says:
The NBA seriously needs to get rid of these guaranteed contracts, and use the NFL as an example when the players association starts bitching.
That way, we wouldn’t have these conversations, and franchises wouldn’t shoot themselves in the foot over lazy bums.

Not his fault the coach won’t play him.
Instead of disciplining him about being benched, play him and hang him out to dry. Then you’ll really see what he can do. And if he can’t do squat, then well he has no excuse.

Give the guy a break. Don’t get pissed if something wins a lottery. It is just another feather in the cap of the Knicks organization, who should just restructure it into a charity and give big contracts to underperforming players

John Starks, you need to do better hiding your Knicks bias.
Guaranteed contracts work both ways. Isiah Thomas is solely responsible for your teams’ suffering the James and Marbury deals.
