Major Problems on Immediate Horizon for Warriors
They may have come out of the free agent sweepstakes with Corey Maggette (not a terrible consolation prize after losing Baron and their chance at Elton), but they may have some serious issues about to come up with their own free agents.
A Warriors blog on the Contra Costa Times web site sees these potential problems as they try to lock up their own guys:
*Here’s a concern I have: what happens when Monta and Andris want more than Maggette? Monta certainly has a claim. Say the Warriors start Monta at $9 a year (which would be $67.5M contract over six years). And say they start Biedrins at $8. That would make Stephen Jackson the fifth-highest paid player on the team.
Now, he’s up for an extension. I seriously doubt if he gets one. How is he going to react to being so far down on the salary pole but being a leader on this team while getting no extension love? Remember, Jackson has watched Richardson get shipped out unexpectedly as if he wasn’t the heart and soul of the team. He watched Pietrus and his boy Barnes get hardballed into a one-year deal. He watched his “brother” Baron Davis get his extension requests rejected in consecutive offseasons and then “lowballed” (in his eyes). He’s watching his other close friend, Al Harrington, once highly coveted by the Warriors, become a role player.
You have to wonder if Jackson is going to take one for the team or try to get his paper.
Things could go very bad for Golden State pretty quickly. If I’m Chris Mullin, I make Monta the far-and-away No. 1 priority, giving him pretty much whatever he wants. Then lets all the other pieces fall where they may. Obviously, you want to keep the rset of the core intact, but you can’t afford to lose Ellis.

I don’t think Stephen is gonna trip, dude is the heart and soul of Golden state, but they took a chance on him in Indiana, and if he forgets that, let dude walk, he goin into the stands fighten, shootin guns in the air and all that craziness, dude is a distraction and a good player at the same time. If dude starts trippen, his trade value is good enough to ship him off for some good peices, Davis was injury prone and I wouldn’t have given him an extension because of his flawed history. Barnes and Petrius had one good season and they were searching for garuanteed money, so I would have told them to kick rocks too!

I think I found Maggette’s website. If he actually is behind this, this is hilarious. An example quote from his bio:
“..his status as one of basketball all-time greats was firmly cemented.”

Could anyone outside of his immediate family say that shit with a straight face?

Trading Jrich was a slap in the face to what they accomplished that year.. Wasnt Jrich the ring leader in that Dallas series?? He got no love from people.. it was all Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson locking down Dirk.. But my mayne was bustin threes on them fools all day.. They had a PHAT backcourt.. J Rich and B Dizzle and with Monta off the bench?? Thats murder.. but now they say to Baron “youll never be half as important as Monta” and then they overpay Magette for his Shot jacking skills.. Man its always been hard to be Warrior fan.. But i said it once and twice and thrice but ill say it again..
Mullins losing the Magic! Sometimes the best move to make is no move! Dip..

What would ever make anybody think the SJax would take one for the team over getting his? If there is something I missed let me know but he has always seemed STRICTLY out for his

So wait. They just signed a small forward, which Dime addressed in today’s Smack as being a move that, although Maggette is good, is adding more cooks to the kitchen at that position. Now someone is concerned about losing a small forward? I don’t understand. Keeping a couple really good young players (Monta and Beidrins) is more important than keeping a redundant player.
Ask Atlanta how having 5 small forwards and no PG and no big man worked out for the last few years. I’m sure they’ll cry themselves to sleep if keeping Josh Smith at the expense of losing Josh Childress.

you are preferential to the player though homie cause you a hooper. you have a biased opinion. I’m a hooper too, but a business man also. and like hahns said, dude is overatted, and I would want to see what he’s gonna do for one more season before giving him an extension.

What’s up with Derrick Rose’s shoe contract?
Last night he wore nikes
http://www.nba.com/orlandogallery/080708_5.html
but Monday night he was wearing adidas. Doesn’t a first pick usually have a sneaker contract sorted out before summer league? Lebron had his contract before he was drafted.

@truth He probaly is overated,I’m just saying if he mad he should let them know because they was saying he a team leader last year.Team leaders not supposed to get paid 5th highest. If I was GS i would make him play his contract out too though. Its a business.Thats why these dudes should get the most bread they can get because your GM will get you the fuck outta here in a second if he think he can do better. And nobody asks about they loyalty.

Stephen Jackson is certified homey. Championship experience with heart who doesn’t mind doin some dirty work on D. Id trade Lamar Odom for him ANY day of the week. He’s been the 2nd biggest reason why you’ve had your recent success, reward that man. Your business doesn’t fare to well when you’re not winning right? You gotta put out a good product to have good business, “business man”.

Jack may have no other choice than to take one for the team. No one else is looking for the extra drama that he brings with his game.
Pay Monta (a fantasy league Superstar!) and go find a real PG on the cheap (the bigger challenge) and GS is cool.

Stack Jack needs to go to Denver if they lose JR. That way his personality can fit right in with K-Mart, Iverson and Melo.
G-State’s management is terrible. Trade J-Rich after a great season and playoffs, and for a dude who never got off the bench anyway, bench Barnes after a great year, bench your starting PG in a clinching game, refuse to up his contract, and then sign yet another 2/3 for a team full of ‘em.
POINT GUARD, anyone???
Maggette is a TERRIBLE consolation prize. He’s 100% not what they needed.

Cammy Z says:
Now that they’ve screwed everything up so badly, they need to get whatever they can for SJack (b/c they have too many highly-paid swingmen), resign Monta at all costs, play him at the 2, Maggette at the 3 and find a point guard. But even then, they’re still in bad shape.
