MJ: Me vs. Kobe in My Prime – “Not Even a Contest”
Yesterday Paul Pierce didn’t blink before telling the world that the best player in the world is not Kobe Bryant, but Paul Pierce. Today, a video is circulating of Jordan at a basketball camp talking with a bunch of teenagers – and when Kobe’s name comes up, Michael simply speaks the truth.
“Kobe would win because I’m older,” started MJ. “But in my prime? Not even a contest. Let’s just say I have a better chance of stopping him than him stopping me.”
This video is definitely worth six minutes of your time…

Unlike PP, mike has all the cred to back up a statement like that. Although I don’t necessarily agree, MJ is MJ.
Isn’t Kobe 2 inches taller? He’s longer and just as competitive.
Jordan was probably a little stronger and quicker, but I’d say even as far as shooting and finishing.
Its a toss up 2 me.

Dagomar says:
Kobe is listed at 6′6″. MJ was listed at 6′6″.
How exactly is Kobe better than MJ? Let’s not even talk about all of Jordan’s accolades, awards, championships. MJ’s game evolved with time, but he was invariably a MUCH more efficient scorer, a better rebounder, better passer and better defender. Kobe’s shooting range is better now than MJ’s was at any point prior to the end of his second threepeat, but that’s about it. And MJ was a much smarter player with better footwork – oh, and a far better team player once Pippin matured. AND, Jordan was better in the clutch and especially better in the playoffs. Way, way better.
The thing Kobe fans keep bringing up is Kobe’s 81 point game. What they forget is that A) MJ played with more difficult defense rules (hand checking) against FAR more dominant big men, B) Jordan rarely jacked up shots all game long, C) the Raptors then were an absolute JOKE and Mitchell barely changed his defenders throughout the game.
Frankly, I consider Kobe the second-best player in the league and a top-15 player in league history. But better than Mike? Come on.
July 31st, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Damon says:
yesterday I read a great article why MJ is just better.
kobe has the better range, you gotta give him that.
mj has the better postgame. but the difference is that mike adjusts to the defense whereas kobe just tries to do the same again and again.
I think skill wise its not that much of a difference, mike is just slightly better in most categories(except long range shooting),and reads the defense a lot better.

Jordan would win obviously, but i think it would be closer than mike may want us to believe…as competitive kobe is he doesn’t have anything on mike with hating to lose.if u take 93 jordan and put him on the lakers this year it’s no way boston comes back from 25 in that game.
kobe still has a ways to go..and mike used to inspire his teammates to raise their intesity level and want it like he did, kobe is my boy but he needs to work on that

Wow now this post will get 200+ comments.. im probably bout to post 5-10 myself lol..
You cant say nothing bout Jordans skills.. But you cant say nothin bout Kobes skills.. Jordan shot a higher percentage but Kobe has way more range.. Both can defend and make their assignment wet the bed.. both can pass and rebound with PG’s and C’s because of their competetive drive and god given talent..
BUT Jordan got six rings and what so many MVP’s that i cant even list em all.. shit even MVP in Vegas lol Kobe still has a ways to go.. he gots 4-5 more years at his level so lets see what happens..
@ 14
Yeah the defense MAN ON MAN was tougher but there are so many schemes, zones nowadays i think defensively its harder now.. just on a different level.. Kobe is the ultimate 1on1 players so who cares if people could hand check him?? he can elevate over for the J or cross him up and leap to the sky.. same for MJ.. one thing imagine these two in their primes playing each other.. shit even the late Jordan years when he played young Kobe were phat.. In their last meeting Kobe dropped 50+ and hit 8 threes i think..
But just so someone doesnt read this and think i am backiong Kobe let me say it – JORDAN WAS BETTER and the hardware proves it.. lets see if Kobe can earn his..

@Mox, both Kobe and MJ are 6′6″
Also, PP just grabbed a ring and Finals MVP (which makes 1 more FMVP than Kobe’s got.) He’s definitely wrong, but he just earned the cred to at least get the chance to say something that dumb and be laughed at by all of us. This wasn’t like Deshawn Stevenson calling out LeBron.
@The Boddy, Kobe’s a top 20 player all time, it wouldn’t be a beat-down, but yes, MJ would take it.

MoxWestCoastRep says:
I never said anything about the 81 pt game. If anything that just defends your point about Kobe’s range.
And MJ never played in the finals on a team that was far out-matched like the Lakers were, so saying he would never let Boston come back from 25 is just nonsense.
MJ may be the best right now, but Mamba is far from done and has yet to cement his place

Just for the record, if Jordan played today, with the hand check rules, those poor defenses and today’s big men, he would have averaged almost 40 points. Jordan was just better in basically everything but range.
Come on, he never missed a shot in this video. This guy is just fantastic. I’m wondering why the mavs don’t give him a contract, do anything to bring him back. We have tried almost every veteran player, even Juwan freaking Howard. Give Jordan a contract, play him 20 min a game and he’ll average 15/3/4 and on the playoffs let’s him do his magic. I’m sure he could still play in the league and be a top30 player. If it wasn’t for his knees he would be top 15.
July 31st, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Lee says:
Any of you remember Chris Jackson (Mamood abdul raeoof (SP)) He was doing a camp with MJ and MJ asked him to play one on one. Chris Jackson killed him. MJ did this to prove a point, a good offensive player can alway beat a good defensive player one on one.
No one can say who would win, it would just come down to who had their game “on” on that day.

Mike is the better player hands down. He maximized his talent and his teammates and got the most out of it all.
Kobe is talented but no way he beats MJ in a series.
The post that said the Lakers were outmatched-WTF??
Mike played in an era where the rules allowed hand checking(most of his career) and physical play on and off the ball
The zone schemes of today are difficult to plan for but no way does Mike get shut down in the finals!

Yoooo says:
Damn this nigga Kobe can’t catch a break.
How was Jordan stronger? He was a better athlete, yes, but if you take I think it was 2001 or 2002 Kobe wen he was overly buff then he was infinitely stronger than MJ.
Skill wise its close but I give KB the edge. I feel he was a better ball handler and even though he does get away with some walks (just like MJ used to) his footwork is crazy.
Jordan never had a player to defer to who was 7 anything with talent. Much less the most dominant force to play the game. If MJ had played with a player of Shaqs caliber his stats wouldn’t be nearly the same, except for his FG%. Pts and boards would have been down. And assists could go either way.
As far as rings go its a different league, theres no way you can win a chip with just 2 great players anymore. There has to be a deeper talent pool on ur squad in order to win. And that’s not to say Jordan wouldn’t win today, but Winnington and the Australian cat aint cuttin it today. Randy Livingston, no sir. Ill say Jordans better cuz I don’t feel like hearing the backlash. But that aint how I really feel.

Ehhh….not sure how winning championships and MVPs really helps you in a 1-on-1 game. Try and separate the man from the myth and maybe you’ll see things a bit clearer. This is a competitive matchup anyway you slice it. I think Jordan was stronger, but I also think that Kobe’s a bit faster and is overall the better shooter. It might even come down to who gets the ball first. Bottom line: I see this going back and forth until you have to arbitrarily put and end to it. Take your pick. It’s a toss-up IMO.

Poor Kobe. First Shaq ask him how is a** taste and then Paul implies he is better than him. Now you got M.J. saying he would have took Kobe back when.
I hope he takes all this in the right way and uses it as motivation to be better. He got a lot of cats coming at him be it comical, directly or indirectly.
As of now I am glad he is not trying to be all on t.v. answering back and all. I just hope he does him.
Must be something to Kobe though cause he got a lot of cats throwin off on him. These ain’t lames either he got top notch dudes speakin on him.
I ain’t a Laker fan but I do like Kobe and appreciate the maturity I see him as he goes on. Just hope he continues on and doesn’t let the pressure get to him in the wrong way.
Can’t say who would win one on one. People wanna trip but Chris Jackson I think already beat Mike one on one. Of course some say Mike didn’t take dude serious to he was close to winning. Still Mike loss and Chris wasn’t close to what Kobe is now overall.
Still a one on one game I think it to up for grabs. I say it would be even (though I would want Kobe to win). Now a team game, by far Jordan.
Just hope Kobe stays smart and strong.

Kudabeen says:
The only thing Kobe has over MJ is range on his J?
Kobe has better handle, more offensive moves for all situations (he borrowed from MJ by the way).
I think it would be very close and Kobe would win more often then lose. MJs game is from a different era. Jordan wasn’t really locking a lot of the newer young guys in the league down on D in the mid to late 90s. That crossover thing was making him look old out there.
I think MJ was better player within the NBA structure for sure, but one on one is a different animal. Kobe has too much talent to just be second to MJ one on one. Kobe was making MJ and Pippen look old, but he was also still learning then…
Hell Grant Hill gave MJ and Pippen problems.
MJ saying that he would have had a better chance of stopping Kobe than Kobe stopping him seems to be more so out of a sense of seniority. He is used to looking at Kobe on the court as the young guy subject to veteran savvy. Kobe is much more cerebral now than he was even 3 years ago.
MJ at 27 vs Kobe at 27 would be great to watch. I can’t say either could really say no contest. In a 7 game series Kobe gets it 4-3…

Jordan is Jordan. i mean Jordan was so good that the Pistons made RULES after him. and Kobe is so good that hes dubbed the “new MJ”
But these are 2 diff players. n what makes them great is there ability to lead their own teams. Kobe came in the leauge when Jordan was going on his Retirement tour. and when he came back 2 WSH. Kobe was the BEST player in the league right there. this is like Larry vs Magic kuz u really didnt know who was btter. but Jordan did ALOT to the game and his clutchness and etc.
Kobe is still like 29. he’ll have 6-7 yrs. n when he retires in like 2013-2014. it would spark a debate between who was better. Kobe or MJ.
but personally MJ was better but Kobe is still right up there. its a close call

That ones easy. It would be jordan… Key word to the statement IN HIS PRIME. So sayin young kobe and grant hill were giving them problems is garbage simply because they were gettin old then. Iverson gave jordan the business for a second, does that mean in his prime jordan couldn’t slow iverson down? Jordan has jacked shots but never to the point kobe has, jordan has never fallen off the map in a finals, handchecking rules changed everything. Look who jordan went against, magic?bird? hell could you imagin kobe tryin to go against the bad boy pistons? he couldnt even handle the cetltics playin tough and settled for jumpers. Imagine if he drove and rodman just hockey checked him. Jordan had to deal with all that shit, hence “jordan rules”. Now days its a shooters league. People can’t touch you, so u can just sit back and jack 3’s all day or go down the lane with no contact. 70% of the guys now days wouldnt have cut it back them. Jordan was mvp/champ in a tougher era. I said it before and I’ll say it again, i love how going into the finals EVERYONE was sayin how the lakers were the better team, the celtics had no chance, kobe wouldnt let them lose etc..but when the lakers get spanked its suddenly “oh no one had experince” or “the celtis had a superior team” grow some nuts, your boy choked in his golden i’m better than jordan moment. MoxWestCoastRep I agree no one will ever know and it’s all if’s and theory, so can’t nobody say for sure.
Granted Mike was the bomb. Cats be actin like dude ain’t never had a bad game or lost. Just as Kobe and a bunch of other players Jordan has lost, had horrible games, jacked shots, got scored on, lost in playoffs and more. Sure he probably didn’t have a lot of bad moments as other players but it ain’t like dude hasn’t been beat and can’t be beating.
Therefore if anyone got a great chance at beating M.J. for what it’s worth I most def. ride with Kobe. Saying Kobe could possibly beat M.J. don’t take away from money’s greatness and don’t really add to Kobe’s cause it’s 1 on 1.
I ain’t the best baller at all and have beaten some cats I know for a fact was better than me 1 on 1.
I don’t care if Jordan said if he was in his prime, if he was at Carolina, on the playground, or whatever it’s very possible for dude to get beat 1 on 1 and for that matter it’s already happened (let the excuses of MJ wasn’t really trying hard begin).
So yea it’s up for debate and very plausible. Dude (M.J.)is the greatest as it stands currently to most but he ain’t invincible.

Is Kareem better than Wilt?
Is MJ better than Kobe?
No one will ever know for sure….I dont claim to know that Kobe would be better than MJ in his prime all i’m saying is Kobe is the best player in the world right now and ball players only get better over time- the competion goes up the athleticism goes up etc.
And to the point that if MJ was on the Lakers they would have won the finals is BS.
The Celtics were a far better team with THREE HOFers so try again.
If Kobe was on the Bulls in the 90s they would have been just as good IMO.
But who knows!
And who’s your team Smooth?
Are you a bulls fan? Or do you just band wagon on whoever wins?

if kobe was on the 90’s bulls they wouldnt have won 6 championships thats for sure, kobes impact hasnt been like mikes kobe barely shoots 44 fg % from the field while mike was up around 50 fg % his whole career & had season shooting over 50 fg % so each kobe possesion is nowhere near as valuable as each mj possesion kobe misses more that half his shots, then playoff time michael stats are amzing increasing even more while kobe on teh otherhand has crap playoff averages & tehy actually lower from his season averages

Last time I checked no one on the Lakers even made the all-star team other than Kobe.

pau gasol is an all star, jordan made pippen who he is, jordan didnt win with pippen aswell bro the reason the bulls started winning was because jordan finally got it he finally relised what it took 2 win joe dumars summed when jordan finnaly beat the bad boys once jordan relised how to get all his teamates involved & still drop 30 points a game thats when i relised we were in trouble ever since then jordan was winning campionships his team teams had barely any talent he had weak supporting casts but lead them 2 championships anyway

Kevin K you wrote: why does jordan not playing rucker even be an argument huh???
I am thinking you meant how can Jordan not playing in or at the Rucker even be in an argument?
If so, you need to go back and check my comments pimpin. I wasn’t using MJ not playing or playin at the Rucker as part of any argument. I was just wondering if he ever has and what it would be like if he did.
So naw Smush ain’t better than MJ and I never said or implied such. So I don’t even know where you comin from with all that.
As far as money’s time with the Wizards yea he had a wack squad I ain’t denying that (I see you left Rip off yo list lol). I was trying to see what people were saying was “domination”. Cause sure Jordan has always scored and been able to score but he hasn’t always had just years of championships no matter where he has been and his every year in the L. So yes money as an individual is or was dominant but with the Wizards and Bulls at times they struggled.
You can have MJ over Kobe dude that is cool I ain’t gonna cry lol. Simply just trying to get clarity and wonder 1. and 2. Just saying sure as an individual dominant but not always with his squads.
aight then holla.

LOL at 15-yr olds who never saw prime Jordan giving Kobe any chance at all. They are on completely different levels. I give Kobe his props, but he’s thoroughly outclassed by Mike.
Of course, he has plenty of company. Only Wilt and Kareem even belong in the argument as the GOAT.

Is it safe to come in?
Why all these dudes hatin on Kobe like he did some shit to they sisters? lol
If you sayin Mike woulda crushed Kobe in a game of one-on-one EVERYTIME, you need to check tapes.
There’s tapes and tapes of dudes gettin Mike once in a while. I seen Rolando Blackman get Mike. Shoot, they were callin Gerald Wilkins the Jordan stopper cuz he caught Mike once. They been sayin Joe D “shut down” Mike cuz he made him work hard sometimes. Too many examples. Some o you twistin the facts. The issue wasn’t how many championships, MVPs, all-star games – none of that. It was 2 dudes in their prime, one ball, empty gym, who’d take it. To say Mike is takin Kobe’s lunch money everytime is just luda. If they played to 11, game by 2 and Kobe or Mike won it 12-10, would anyone really be surprised? Stop hatin on dude cuz he ain’t Mike. 20 years from now, yo kids gonna be tellin you how some young buck could crush Kobe one on one and you gonna have to evaluate the individual skills. Basketball is an evolution game. Baylor watched Oscar, Julius watched Baylor, Mike watched Julius and Kobe watched Mike. They took pieces of their games and added their own touch. At the age of 30, Mike had just won his first chip and was just scrapin his prime so why heads judgin Kobe when he just copped his first MVP and just played in his 5TH Finals at the age of 29? torn finger, no big man, no help. Stop hatin and try to appreciate

Yoooo says:
Yo 2 out of 3 of thoe guys u named that Jordan played with on the Wizards Kobe dragged to the playoffs. Not Lue so much cuz they had a squad, but u get the idea.
MJ sputtered out of the playoffs his first couple of years too bruh so knock it off. And the 2 years the Lakers got bounced from the playoffs by the Suns, Kobes squad was BY FAR the worst group of talent assembled on a playoff team. Its hard to win with a bunch of losers. Just like its hard to lose with a bunch of winners.
The handcheck rule was around since Jordan picked a ball up. He was used to it when he got in the league, there was never an adjustment period. Nobody ever played zone in the NBA. That was a total defensive advantage Kobe and the other great players of today had to deal with. All you can do is play with the circumstances the commish gives you. Whether its a new ball, raised rims or zone defenses. I give Jordan his due. He is clearly still, for right now, the best player ever to play. But don’t discredit my main man Kobe like he’s some bum ass nigga.
Who was Kobes #2 man supposed to be this year? Who can create there own offense besides him? He is responsible for a lot on offense and he sets the defensive tne on D. Don’t give me that Jordan will lock u up nonsense either. Cuz when it cam down to somebody on the bulls guarding the other teams best player that responsibility landed in the Lap of another top 20 players Scottie Pippen. And for anyone to say Jordan made pippen, I can tell ur some young whippersnapper still using 1 ply toilet paper just cuz its cheaper. Check Mr Pippens bio w/o Jordan. MVP type season. I believe he ended up being top 5 in voting that year. Gasol is a countrymen all star. Meaning he got voted in cuz his nation was on nba.com voting for him…

i just remember mj being a much more consistent defender than kobe is; there are short durations where kobe is as good a defender as it gets, but he never sustains it because he has to spend so much energy on offense. We won’t ever know, but I personally think that there is a significant difference in the amount of effort each person puts towards playing consistently great defense.

Being a long time NBA fan I can actually say that I’ve seen both play Kobe and MJ play (live) in their prime. Kobe is a phenomenal player but if you asked any coach or player thats played with/against both who they would choose if they could pick one for their team they would undoubtedly pick MJ. He is a killer. There were several years when Jordan was in his prime fans and teams across the league KNEW they could not win a championship. It was over before the season even started. Kobe is in his prime now(The Celtics werent overly impressed). The only reason that people are saying Kobe is better is because they are a fantical Laker fans and are trying to convince themselves that Kobe is the sh_t or youngsters spouting off opinions about sh-t they don’t know anything about.

First: i must bring up a few things that were totally WRONG by some people
1. pau was not in the all-star starting lineup therefore the votes did not matter. he was voted in by the coaches
2.8 out of 10 espn analysis picked the lakers over boston (most in 6). so for those people who thought the lakers were over matched you can see that the PROFESSIONALS didn’t think so
3. dominance is winning games not scoring a lot. mj’s best seasons scoring wise he didnt win.
4. kobe was getting 1 on 1 coverage. if it wasnt paul it was ray or james. he only got doubled when he got into the paint or inside 15 feet like every one should.
in the end mj. would beat kobe handily. most of you are forgetting that mj was the defensive player of the year. you claim kobe has a better offensive moves but when it come down to it he would be able to use most of them, he’d be smothered. 1 on 1 is mostly about the defense and conditioning which michael wins both ways. in the end michael would win because he was also mentally tougher.

“I like how MJ even addressed the current match-up.”
Its not even close. All the Kobe has more range talk is a joke, Kobe jacks from 3, it hurts him just as much. He jacks the 3 whether he’s hot or not. When he’s hot he looks like a spectacular player. All those people who say Jordan jacked in his youth: you’re right, and he shot over 50% from the field, for his career. Think about that. He shot higher in his younger days. The rules were harder on scorers then, but you don’t need to state this as if Jordan played in a bygone era. Just check the tapes.
Really, its not close. Jordan was the best defensive and offensive player at his position, by a lot.

LOL I think it would be like when Rocky and Apollo Creed I think got in the ring at the end of the movie. Both dudes proceed to straight tag each other at the same time. It was smooth how they did that too by the way.
I think you would see so much of a mirror if they went at it one on one. In the end it would probably be something weird that happens that causes one to take the L.
Like the ball bouncing akwardly off Jordan’s foot or Kobe trying to dunk to hard and it bouncing out. Not telling.
I’d love an era match up. I don’t know when you would divide it persay but it would be tight.
Have all Jordan prime era dudes with Money in front walkin to center court, then flash to Kobe with all his prime era dudes behind him. A coin flips in the air by a good ref (sorry tim and Joey lol) deciding who gets first ball.
I wonder who Mj would pick and who Kobe would pick. Of course I think MJ’s team would win, but it still would be a game to watch.
Anyway it’s late and I am rambling. Still 1 on 1 it’s anybody’s game. You can say Jordan is this and that all day but he still can get got and same with Kobe.
I think you just have to hope that whatever weird event happens to give the other the advantage falls in your guys favor.
I think something weird happens where Money loses the ball somehow and Kobe capitalizes and gets it.
Dang the world may never know.

no one is CLOSE to mike end this argument KOBE is a beast 2nd or 3rd best perimeter player ever (take ur pick between him and Bird) no one else is CLOSE. Kobe and Mike would battle like hell and prolly never stop playing. Mike and Kobe would each win games because they are the best players ever to play on the planet. Mike is an arrogant guy, he is also humble in the same breath, but any player of that caliber that would say they couldn’t beat the other is just putting on for Camera’s. Bird would have said the same thing. Magic the same. Lebron the same. Let’s be real guys. No way Mike just dominates Kobe (atleast not every game) after so many games these guys would figure each other out and be playing to win by two all day.

KOBE is a better scorer than jordan anytime…..JOrdan is just a better leader…. Kobe and JOrdan can do anything they want on the court, but If it comes down to it. Kobe is only 29 if by 35 he has three more rings i bet we all will be talking a different tune, about KOBE….he is not JOrdan , but he shore is positioning himself as the closest person alive to surpass jordan…Lebron needs to wins something then we can talk about him tooo, but lebron has something neither one of them has and thats the magic johnson ability to pass the jordan/kobe ability to score and the pippen abilty to rebound. if lebron ever wins anything he will be up there to and guess whats hes only 23…so all u jordan fans their will be someone better sooner than later but today JORDAN is still KING!
