Monta Ellis is Going to Get Paid

While the Warriors wait to hear back from Elton Brand, they’ve got to be all ears listening to Monta Ellis‘ asking price. And with Baron Davis out of the picture, Monta’s got all the leverage. And if GM Chris Mullin doesn’t make it perfectly clear that he wants to build around Ellis for the future, Monta could simply opt to play for the $1 million deal that’s still in place for next season. Then he could hit the free agent market and leave Golden State empty handed.

So you’ve got to imagine that when Monta says he wants a long-term deal well over $10 million per season, the Warriors simply have to write the check.

From Hoopsworld

“Ellis became infinitely more valuable to the Warriors when Davis agreed with the Clippers, and he’s going to get paid big money. The next time the duo have dinner, Monta Ellis should feel obligated to pick up the check as a thank you.

…Ellis remains the best option now to be the lead guard for the Golden State Warriors in 2008-09 and beyond, so expect him to get paid accordingly and expect it to happen soon. Other teams – New York and Miami come to mind – are interested and would be willing to part with some decent pieces in a sign-and-trade deal, but none of those pieces would be legitimate lead guards.”

He’ll get paid and the Warriors will be forced to trade him in 4 years when they realize that they haven’t gotten anywhere… The west is just too deep.

If the Warriors lose Monta, that’s a wrap for them this year. They’d quickly earn the “worst team in the league” status. They should just play the young guys and hope the lottery gods smile on them next year (and the year after that). They’ll have some serious cap space when Adonal Foyle’s horrendous contract comes off the books ($9.75 million? WTF?). They could also set themselves up to be players in the ‘10 free agent class as well with Harrington and Jackson coming off the books, or they could dangle their expiring deals as trade bait.

Losing Baron ain’t that big of a deal. They were a fringe playoff team with him and nothing more. They just have to make the best of their lottery picks for a couple years, which the Warriors haven’t exactly been able to do (Diogu, Pietrus). Hopefully Wright, Bellinelli and Randolph can develop quickly over the next 2 years. If they can land a stud (or two) in the next couple drafts, they should be alright.

They need to sign Monta though. He won’t carry a team, but he’s one of the best scoring guards in the league and can be a big-time contributor if they get a couple franchise-type players to build with.

    It’s simple…

Porn Addiction = Strip Club shooting incident / Hooker inicident / Domestic disturbance incident

    @ Brown
You don’t think losin Baron’s a big deal? I think people about to get shocked by Monta’s lack of point guard skills. We know he can score like crazy but Baron was the set-up man for that squad. Golden State is already one of the worse teams in the league now, with or without Monta. Baron took a lotta pressure off those dudes and let them just play. When the team was rollin, it was all love, but when they lost some games, who took the blame? I can’t see Jack bein good with the losin they about to take.

If Jack hadn’t been suspended for the first 2 weeks of the season, it might have been Warriors-Lakers in the first round and reppin the Lakeshow, I did not wanna see those matchups.
The biggest problem with the Warriors apart from Nelson is the fact that free agents don’t come to Oakland and apart from gettin lucky to grab Monta in the 2nd round, they draft picks have been turrible. Apart from 2001 when they got JRich, Murphy and Gil(and lost them all), it’s been junk at best.
Best of luck in the Pacific for these guys tho

@daquest?on…yes Monta is from the south. My moms lives in NY and my pops lives in MS… I’ve lived both places, mostly in new york, but the last 5-6 years in MS…

A 45-SECOND SERIOUS DEBATE ON WHETHER MONTA ELLIS’ PORN ADDICTION IS A CONCERN FOR CHRIS MULLEN AND THE WARRIORS ORGANIZATION

I can see it now. in five years Monta will be out of the league because of the most bizarre non-sports-related injury of the new millenium: hairy palms resulting from too much masturbation.

“I just couldn’t grip the ball anymore… I’d get a pass and it would slip right through… it got so bad they traded me to the Grizzlies as a practical joke.”

  18. Brown says:

    @ K Dizzle

Losing Baron will have a huge impact on their present, but the team is extremely young for the most part and they need to look to the future. People are making it a bigger deal than it is. They had a good run for a couple years, and while they made some noise and were a team nobody wanted to face in the first round, nobody considered them championship contenders. They got manhandled by Carlos Boozer in the second round a couple years ago and their flaws were exposed. The West is stacked with great teams and even with some tinkering, the Warriors weren’t poised to challenge the best teams in the league.

When they lost out on the Kevin Garnett sweepstakes, that was a wrap, cuz like you said, free agents aren’t lining up to play for the Ws. So, dealing with the reality of Baron leaving, where the writing was on the wall with how Nellie treated him in their last game, you have to consider your best options.

Sometimes you have to take a couple steps back before you can move forward, just look at the Celtics. The Warriors’ salary situation is great and they have some young talent to develop. Harrington and Jackson can be used as trade bait (even if it’s just for their contracts) and might be able to bring in more young talent/draft picks.

Losing Baron sucks right now, but looking toward the future, it’s not the end of the world. Cap room and high draft picks gives them something substantial to work with, even if there are some serious growing pains along the way.

Everybody knows Monta isn’t a PG. They just need a serviceable PG for now and try to pick a good one up down the road, either through the draft or trades.

i think with the porn addiction he will never say
    “I just couldn’t grip the ball anymore…

  20. Homeless J says:

    haha

Maybe he doesn’t have much of a 3-point shot because he can’t see the basket from that far away. next year he’ll start wearing prescription Kareem goggles. In five years he’ll lose his eyesight altogether

don’t be surprised if Monta finds out about this and has Dime take it down before Chris Mullen can see and rescind his contract offer.

  21. Dave says:

I wonder how much he’s asking for? 10-12mil per annum? Max money based on potential?
