Andrew Bynum vs. Andrew Bogut, Nick Van Exel is Back, and LeBron May Stay Away from the Nets

LeBron JamesLeBron (photo. Mannion)

The precedent has been set for the Lakers and Andrew Bynum. The Bucks inked Andrew Bogut to a five-year extension worth $60 million right now that could reach as much as $72.5 million with incentives. With Bynum up for an extension this summer as well, and his agent saying he’s going after a max deal, the digits for the #1 pick in the ‘05 Draft (Bogut) will no doubt be brought up in negotiations with the #10 pick (Bynum). But even though Bynum’s got a higher ceiling and plays for the high-profile team, hasn’t Bogut had a better career so far? He’s averaged about 12 points and eight boards in three years with Milwaukee, and last season was good for just about 14 and 10 a night. Bynum’s case will definitely be helped, however, by the fact that everyone and their Mom said the Lakers could have won the ‘chip if he’d been healthy in the postseason … The Sixers gave Elton Brand number 42? You mean they hadn’t retired that number for Mike Gminski? … There was some paranoid talk out of L.A. about the possibility of Baron Davis backing out of his agreement with the Clippers (he hadn’t officially signed yet). But Baron and his agent say they’re committed to the Clips … Like we suggested in yesterday’s Smack, the Clippers are moving on from the Elton Brand disappointment and throwing their hat (a hat full of money) into the Josh Smith bidding. Smith was in L.A. yesterday “on business,” according to his agent … Without Derrick Rose (knee) in the lineup, Chicago still knocked off Orlando in summer league play behind Tyrus Thomas‘ 25 points. Brook Lopez scored 22 to go along with eight boards and three blocks, and Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 20 in Jersey’s win over Oklahoma City. And don’t get too excited, Pacers fans, but Shawne Williams dropped 25 points in a win over Miami. Michael Beasley had 17 and eight rebounds, but was outshined by Mario Chalmers, who went for 23 points on 17-of-17 shooting from the stripe … Remember yesterday when we talked about summer-league nepotism? Around the Dime office we were all 100% sure that undrafted Colorado guard Richard Roby — little brother of Kenyon Martin — would “coincidentally” wind up on the Nuggets’ summer squad, but he surprisingly signed with the Nets to play in the Utah summer league. Actually, that’s not such a stretch. K-Mart did used to play for Jersey. And the Nuggets do have a team going in the Vegas Summer League that Roby could still latch onto … FYI, Nick Van Exel will be on the Nuggets coaching staff in Vegas … James Posey’s agent says his client is going to sign with someone within the next day or two, but of course didn’t say which team. All indications are that it’ll be Cleveland, New Orleans, Houston, Washington, Boston or the Lakers. Letting Posey go could be a potentially fatal blow for the Celtics’ hopes of repeating in ‘09; you saw what happened to the Heat when Posey left (among other things). When we were talking to the members of Team USA a couple weeks ago, D-Wade was, unprovoked, publicly imploring Posey to consider coming back to Miami … The Heat signing James Jones won’t make a lot of news right now, but it’s one of those pickups that we could be looking back on in February or March and realizing how big it was. Jones isn’t exactly Jason Kapono, but he gives the Heat a shooting threat they didn’t have with Dorell Wright or Ricky Davis … Dallas signed DeSagana Diop; good because we missed referring to he and Erick Dampier as “Whoever’s Playing Center” for the Mavs. Jason Kidd got Damp a ton of easy buckets last year, but if he can make Diop look almost as competent offensively, he should get his own federal holiday … Is four years at $25 million too much for Mickael Pietrus? The Magic are over-reliant on shooting the three and could use some slashers, but Pietrus is getting a little old (26) to still be a “potential” guy … And completing today’s role player roll call, Denver re-upped with Anthony Carter for one year, $1.2 million. If they’re serious about contending, AC can’t be their starting PG come opening night, and definitely not the day after the trade deadline. Carter reportedly had a slightly richer offer on the table from New York but turned it down. Do you think AC could have beaten out Chris Duhon for the starting job in NY? Do you think that point guard battle would have driven Mike D’Antoni into eventually re-enacting the George Brett Pine Tar Explosion one day in practice and disappearing for two days? … This could be major news: Nets owner Bruce Ratner was cited in the New York Daily News saying that he’s still moving the team to Brooklyn, but the actual move might not happen until midway through or maybe AFTER the 2010-11 season. That means if LeBron wants to play for the Nets when he’s up for free agency, he’ll have to play at least half-a-season in New Jersey. Maybe that’s not enough to turn him away from Team Roc, or maybe it is. But we have a feeling that the Nets’ brass will do whatever it takes to get that team in BK in time to pitch LeBron on it … Have we mentioned that Candace Parker is REALLY, REALLY good? She served the Houston Coments a nice 40 points, 16 boards, 6 assists and 5 blocks in an overtime win yesterday … With Rodney Carney, Corey Brewer and Sebastian Telfair (if they re-sign him), Minnesota would definitely win an NBA “Celebrity Fit Club” weigh-in challenge. Team Light-in-the-Ass might wanna leave Craig Smith at home, though … Stephon Marbury just can’t catch a break, can he? First the Knicks are replacing him with Duhon, now we’ve learned that Steve & Barry’s, the retailer who carries the Starbury sneaker and apparel line, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Sucks for Ben Wallace, too … We’re out like stopping Candace …

  13. Talented says:

    Candace is nice, Lebron is going no where, Minnesota is lookin like New York wit all them damn gaurds, and good luck to Stephon. Im still out like brian scalabrinies game

  14. SD32 says:

    What does everyone think about this possibility? – If Brooklyn’s not ready, LeBron might force the cavs to sign him to say a 2yr contract (it’s not like they would have a choice if they want to keep him), after that the nets should be settled in brooklyn & cavs would have another 2 yrs to build a decent team around him & convince him to resign long-term? He’s taken a shorter contract before for business reasons so that just got me thinking. Really hope he stays in cleveland his whole career though

  15. SD32 says:

    BTW… @ Bruce & Youngfed – where’s all your breaking news?? I’m pretty sure that’s about all that’s going on this time of year… At least till the olympics

  16. YOUNGFED says:

    @SD32
    BREAKING NEWS:

    1.) The Clippers have also made preliminary contact with Charlotte Bobcats forward Emeka Okafor, who is also a restricted free agent, according to NBA sources who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to talk about player movements.

    2.) The possibility of earning $80 million for five seasons didn’t catch Chris Paul’s attention. The Hornets’ All-Star point guard was more interested in signing a shorter-term extension that provided assurances that the team’s core group — center Tyson Chandler and forwards David West and Peja Stojakovic — would remain together for the next three seasons. Paul signed a three-year extension Wednesday, which includes a player option for a fourth year, that pushes the estimated value of the contract to $68 million. “I’m trying to make sure those guys are here with me,” Paul said Wednesday.

    RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Imprisoned quarterback Michael Vick filed for bankruptcy protection while serving time for federal dogfighting charges, saying he owes between $10 million and $50 million to creditors.

    3.) Vick filed Chapter 11 papers in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Newport News on Monday. The seven largest creditors listed in the court papers are owed a total of about $12.8 million.

    4.) Beasley has said he prides himself on being cool and collected, yet acknowledged Friday that, even though the draft is over, he’s still battling nerves.

    “All my thoughts are just in a whirlwind right now,” Beasley said. “Is this real? I’m kind of scared of what’s coming next. … I knew that I might have been the No. 1 or No. 2 pick for a long time, but reality has set in. My life is changing dramatically. So I am a little surprised that I am this nervous.”

    He shrugged that off. Playing the game is the easy part, he says, then points out he has plenty to prove.
    “On the court and off,” Beasley said, “I have a large chip on my shoulder.”

    Is that enough BREAKING NEWS for. I keeps hot sh*t, so back up pimpin’

  17. rangerjohn (maggette:"its not about the money, PAY ME!") says:

    breaking news SPURS signing roger mason lmao come on a 6′5″ point guard (or at least that is what espn has him listed as) i am not sure i like this much, and they are letting barry get away for about 600k, and to houston none the less.

  18. the_don_mega says:

    u tha man FED…

  19. YOUNGFED says:

    I do what I can Mega. lol

  20. SD32 says:

    OK – knew the CP3 one. Didn’t know about okafor. Might not be a bad fit besides kaman where he won’t have to be the best froncourt player and can play pf. Don’t follow american football very much im from australia so dont really care about vick. Hadn’t heard the beasley quotes, although ‘life’s changing, i’m nervous’ isn’t that interesting. But still I’ll give u that one nice work

  21. SD32 says:

    And with what i said about okafor to clips – only at the right price, which would be fairly cheap…

  22. YOUNGFED says:

    BTW, The Cavs are gonna pull a Tonya Harding move on Lebron if he tries to leave for Brooklyn. I can see it now a fan rush’s Lebron at a game and crack’s both his knee’s with a bat. Then screams “Now Run Tell Dat!” lmao

  23. SD32 says:

    lol. I’m surprised boozer is still walking

  24. SD32 says:

    Why is my comment ‘awaiting moderation’?

  25. yallallreadyknow says:

    andrew bogut will have a better career than andrew bynum. i know most of yall dont wanna believe that (only because you like la and bynum and dont like bogut as much since he aint american—real talk and you all know it)…but bogut will have a better individual career.

    is candance parker really giving it up to sheldon williams of all ppl?

    elton brand can have any philly jersey he wants….he’s their first real PF since the round mound

    i thought kenyon martins brother was ‘50′ on the and1 mixtape tour. 50 looks just like kmart

    nuggs re-uped on anthony carter, but you say they have nick van exel on their staff?…hell….why not have nick on the court?!!?

    and to dime: step your game up and spare us nonesense. don EVER mention an nba celebrity fit club on smack again

  26. Kobeef says:

    Until the press conference I’m still thinking BD backs out of the LA deal….unless they get Smith which I think is a long shot.

    LeBron is going to the NEts in 2010 no matter where they are.

    Harris, Carter, Yi and Lopez at least show promise of helping Lebron win a game without doing everything – unlike the Lebronnettes.

  27. SD32 says:

    @ yallallreadyknow – I agree about bogut/bynum. Bogut has gotten better every year & is dedicated to improving & winning. Bynum’s good couple of months that he had weren’t even as good as boguts whole season. Yes he’s younger & has ‘potential’ but bogut will continue to get better & get the most out of his potential by working hard

  28. Truth says:

    @yallallreadyknow

    I agree with you on the bogut v bynum statement. Bynum is overatted!!
    @YoungFed
    Okafer discussing with the clippers huh? I would like to see that signing? Wonder how that experiment will come out, two injury prone players getting comfortable LONG contracts. Spells bench warming disaster to me?

  29. YOUNGFED says:

    @Truth
    I think it’s a good fit for the Clip’s, plus the really don’t have any other option with Brand and maggette gone. Also I don’t won’t the to get Josh Smith because I’m still hoping the Piston’s lock him up pretty soon. So in reality they are the only 2 impact players left, so what do expect the Clip’s to do.

  30. that's whats up says:

    @ ranger
    Spurs are signing Mason, a “”point guard” who averages 1.7 assists.
    Phenomenal move R.C.
    Spurs have been slacking the last few years, and it’s disappointing. Duncan only has a few good years left, because once he retires…….
    Spurs are going to suck for a loooong time

  31. Ross says:

    Bogut worth $72.5 million? I haven’t seen a lot of him, but what I have seen wasn’t worth that much.

  32. shake&bake says:

    Candace Parker has a forehead fetish.

  33. Data says:

    If I’m the lakers I don’t know if I sign Bynum to max deal. Drafting on potential is one thing but signing a max deal on potential is a giant risk. He played well for 1/2 a season. He’s young there is nothing that says he wouldn’t have fallen off in the second half or if he would have disappeared in the playoffs like the rest of the squad.
    And teams need to stop signing dudes like Bogut and Rashard Lewis to these insane deals it just inflates the whole salary scale of the league cause players are saying if Bogut got this and Rashard got that then i deserve big money. F*** off! I wish teams could have some collusion and not feel like if they play hardball some desperate team will throw a shitload of money at an average player.

  34. Truth says:

    @YoungFed
    Delayed gratification may be the answer. I wouldn’t take Davis or Okafer, at least not for max money. They just aren’t durable enough. Let Gordon and Al thorton lose a little and get seasoned under Mobley and Kaman, then wait until next year to make some major moves. I just don’t know if okafer and Davis will stay healthy long enough to have any success

  35. yallallreadyknow says:

    i dunno dogg…i’d smash candace parker too

  36. Alf says:

    hmm…just a thought here, but does Chris Douglas-Roberts look like a second coming of Cutino-Mobley?

  37. Big V says:

    Nick never struck me as the type of guy who would pursue a coaching career.

  38. doc says:

    Nick probaly ran through a lot of bread and trying to keep them checks coming.Or it might be for the love of the game but when you rich you can love the game from a island somewhere.I play tomorrow at 10 AM in Vegas.I dont know if that one come on NBATv but if it do check me out.I just hope they give me some good minutes and dont got me on some BS.

  39. ERIC says:

    Candace Parker gives Sheldon Williams the business. Prob embarrassing for an NBA player to know his gf can ball much better than he can.

    It’s gonna be like that movie for love & basketball. sheldon will be out of the league in a few years, cheering on Candace in the wnba.

  40. YOUNGFED says:

    @Data
    You are one bitter Muthaf**ker. Why all the hostility pimpin’. Relax dude life can’t be that bad were you at.

    @Truth
    Davis played all 82 games last year and okafer is really pretty durable. I’d take either one one the Piston’s all day.

    @Alf
    CDR will be more like Willen Green. They’re both form Detroit

  41. doc says:

    @ Fed Please dont say that about CDR.Willie Green must be from your hood or something because you the only person in the world who compliments that fucking bums game.He lost too many games for us throwing up that bullshit to ever get a comparision to a good player from me.@Eric I guarentee Sheldon will beast the shit outta Candace on the court.She way better than them broads but Willie Green will cook her.

  42. YOUNGFED says:

    come on Doc Willie Green is alright and he’s far from a Bum. If you’re starting in the NBA you’re not a bum by default.

  43. yallallreadyknow says:

    @ doc–

    good luck 2morrow. i’m too old to ball professionally anymore, but you good sir still have a chance. go for it and make us proud on this board.

  44. yallallreadyknow says:

    errrr…
    let me correct myself; i never balled professionally…only against pros (terrell brandon, bobby sura, antonio daniels etc..)

  45. Truth says:

    Yeah Doc, do yo thing man! I don’t have NBAtv cause I’m in the process of moving right now, but I’m a find one of my peoples cribs to watch it to check you out. Killem man! Dunk on at least one person for the board homie!!!

  46. rangerjohn says:

    @ thats whats up
    yeah i was thinking something along those lines, the 6′5″ point guard is more of a 2 guard.

  47. Data says:

    @Youngfed
    It has nothing to do with being bitter. You think the bucks really think Bogut is worth that money? They know he’s not but they know that there are teams that are desperate to make some sort of move to apease their fans and will overpay Bogut.
    You can’t honnestly tell me that Bynum is worth a max contract. All i’m sayng is that GMs are screwing each other over by inlfating players salaries. The average salary is $5M per… Need I remind you of the Foyle signing

  48. doc says:

    @Fed Well tell Joey D give up one of them young guards yall got for Willie,because his time over.He only started because Lou Will little.He back to the bench this year though.Iggy taking his spot and Thad taking Iggys.Im definitly gonna try to get me a spot though fellas.If I make the team and how much I be on here Dime gonna have to give me a play in the mag.Im on my flight now though and I got my gameface on.I need somebody to offer me more money than the next team one day you dig!

  49. YOUNGFED says:

    How we supposed to know who you are 2morow. what position you playin’ and do you got a number assigned yet.

  50. doc says:

    Im a PG Dawan Robinson.I aint get no number yet.Im on the plane to Vegas from the Illadelph now.When I get one I let yall know.

  51. that's whats up says:

    the Clippers just released four players: Shaun Livingston, Smush Parker and two others.

    Dan Dickau and Boniface Ndong.

    Now they got no dick and no dong. …and no one to smush it.

  52. ERIC says:

    @doc – yes, Sheldan can [maybe] beat Candace 1 on 1 but I’m referring to her status/skills related to other women players vs Sheldon as an average bench warmer.

  53. Austin Burton says:

    @Bank (#3) — Thanks for the compliment.

  54. Austin Burton says:

    @Data — GM and owners always need to be saved from themselves. Hence the rookie salary cap (which stemmed from Glenn Robinson asking for $100 million coming out of college and the Bucks almost giving it to him) and the age limit (they couldn’t stop drafting unprepared high schoolers).

  55. heavy d says:

    Candace > Shelden in bball and looks.

    Shelden > Candace in paycheck.

  56. doc says:

    @Eric believe me aint no maybe to it.He can fuck her on and off the court.But hell yeah compared with they sexes she way better.And like heavy D said he pulling the bread but she gonna pass him with endorsments.Only thing he can endorse is Coach K.

  57. Bron42 had springs before slamball says:

    bogut is makin like 7 million less than brand..shame

    @youngfed, um kwame started at one point and he was a bum still. Same with darko so that theoy doesnt work.

  58. LakeShow84 says:

    This Shelden Williams / Candace Parker issue is eating away at my soul..

  59. YOUNGFED says:

    @Bron42
    Um….Darko never “Ever” starter in Detroit, and didn’t play hardly for 3 years. Also Kwame is not a Bum he just can’t catch, shoot, run, or pass. lmao

    Naw but seriously it’s a BIG difference from a consistant starter like willie green and Kwame.

  60. YOUNGFED says:

    However I will agree there is more acceptence of Big men being able to be bums due to the lack of true bigs. but if your a 1-3 and a starter your not a bum.

  61. doc says:

    @fed Willie might’ve been a consistant starter at yall high school but in the league that is not what I would define him as.

  62. doc says:

    He’s a bum to Philadelphians.If you came to Philly with that Willie aint a bum shit somebody would kidnap you to take you to the hospital for brain trauma.

  63. YOUNGFED says:

    He didn’t look like a bum in the playoffs against us this year. he actually was yall best player. So I don’t see how yall disrectin’ the kid like that. Dude ain’t no star but he’s a serviceble STARTER.

  64. YOUNGFED says:

    TYPO: disrespectin’

  65. Austin Burton says:

    This reminds me of when Tyronn Lue was playing for some garbage teams in Orlando (I think), and admitted after the season that he shouldn’t be a starter.

  66. Bron42 had springs before slamball says:

    hes a bum and darko started for orlando..plus willie def hasn’t been a consistant starter. HE gets his chance to shine, jacks crazy shots and gets put back on the bench

  67. YOUNGFED says:

    It’s funny how yall dawg a cat that was clearly the only reason Philly last that many games in the playoffs.

  68. doc says:

    Willie was never our best player dog.Reggie Evans was our best player in the playoffs which tell you how bad we was.Just because Willie got 15 at the end of the night dont mean shit if you’re 6 for 25.

  69. doc says:

    Fed you riding for your Detroit man but you tripping.

  70. K Dizzle says:

    Damn, Doc, even Willie Burton put up 53 once for y’all. Not to be quotin but even the sun gotta shine on a ‘bum’ one time. Dude’s been solid since he came back from that knee injury. Green’s gonna be a solid backup on that squad and could threaten for sixth man of the year if Elton brings what he usually does….and Fed’s gotta rep Willie cuz he a detroit boy

    About this Bynum being overrated junk, y’all be killin dude. It’s a business and even as a Lakeshow fan, i expect dude to ask for the max just cuz he’s in demand. His agent ain’t askin for the max if AB is still injured. Soon as I seen Bogut get that 72 mill extension, I knew there was gonna be expectations. If Bynum comes back to have the same season he had last year and stays healthy, he’ll get what he wants. Quick, name a good center out east outside of DHoward…Bring Bogut out west and see how that go. Shoot, even the Celtics lost when Perkins didn’t play. Who would you take? AB or KP? If you payin Diop 31M, Bogut 60-72M, Dalembert 60M, someone’s def’nitely gonna throw money at dude, whether you think a 20 year old who’ll have 4 seasons of duty before he can legally drink and averaged 13 10 and 2 with 62% is overrated or not, you still want him on your squad

  71. Bone says:

    Why are the Lakers in such a rush to give Bynum an extension? They still have at least two years of him under his rookie deal. Let him play out this season, let him become a restricted FA next year, and if he is worth a max deal and someone offers him the max, match it.

    I don’t understand why everyone is trippin about a dude that has played about 40 good games in his career and just a year ago was a fat, out of shape project.

    If Kobe hadn’t killed him last summer, he probably would still be that.

    Biggest mistake the Lakers would ever make if they give him a max deal this summer.

  72. DJ Go Go Gomez says:

    Damn. Why all the hate for Sheldon. Do any of you even know him? Maybe he’s just a good dude that treats her well. And since he’s got some bread Candace knows he isn’t some dude after her cuz she’s a baller.

  73. Austin Burton says:

    Because if they don’t at least try to extend him this summer, Bynum might see it as an insult and resolve to leave no matter what. Plus, you don’t want to end up with a Gordon/Deng situation where Bynum is playing to showcase his skills instead of playing to win knowing he’s a restricted FA next summer.

  74. doc says:

    @K-dizz you giving me flashbacks with the other bum ass Willie.Shit.I got practice at 4 so I holla at yall.

  75. Bone says:

    All I am saying is Bynum hasn’t seen a minute of game action since January, hasn’t played a minute with Gasol on the floor, and is a 7 footer coming off of a serious knee injury. Is Jerry Buss really dumb enough to give this guy $10 mil a year right now? Is Bynum dillusional? If he struggles next year like Deng and Gordon, it would actually help the Lakers because they could pay him less. I do not see GMs and coaches banging on Deng and Gordon’s doors offering them max deals.

    Here is what Buss and all the Laker fans need to ask themselves: Can you really see Bynum being the centerpiece of the team in 3-4 years? Or is he always going to be a role-player.

    You can at least justify the Bogut money. He has been healthy, averages a double-double, and has steadily improved YoY.

  76. Jerry Buss says:

    calm down, Bone. He’s twenty….
    How many games did Brand and Arenas play last year?
    Don’t worry about me.
    I’m makin dough…LMAOAOAOAOAO!!!

  77. OKC Hicks says:

    Apparently the Pistons are interested in T-Mac cause Dumars is looking to shake things up with his line-up after the past few disappointments in the playoffs. It’s interesting to see the landscape of the East slowly changing whether it’s free agents, trades, rookies, etc. Not to say it’s anywhere near the caliber of the West, but still, it’s something to keep a look-out for…

    Bogut’s money is justified because it’s hard to find a dude that can give u a solid double-double nightly from the center position. Think of all the teams in the East or West that could have used someone like Bogut. In fact, the Cavs should package Big Ben and Wally for Bogut and a draft pick. I know it’ll never happen but a brotha can dream, right?
