Robert Horry Is Done

At least with the Spurs. With the team re-signing Kurt Thomas, bringing Roger Mason into the fold, and needing to make room for first-round draft pick George Hill and promising big-man project Ian Mahinmi, there might not be a spot left for the 37-year-old Horry, who is coming off one of the worst seasons of this career and definitely his worst playoff run.
Asked by a San Antonio TV reporter if he was coming back for another shot with the Spurs, Horry said, “I don’t think so. I think it will be a cold day before that happens. I think they are involved in their youth movement and I think it’s a 99 percent chance that I won’t be coming back.”
Horry has said he wants to play one more year, and wanted to do it either with the Spurs or the Rockets. At this stage in his career he’s only interested in playing for contenders, and most of them don’t have the space — on the roster or in the rotation — for him.
If in fact Horry does hang them up this summer, what is his legacy? Is he a Hall of Famer? Is he the greatest role player of all-time?

You’ve had a good run Rob. Time to hang it up!! Probably one of the greatest role players. Always happens to be at the right place at the right time.

HOF IMO. He lives in Houston, which is why he wants to play in Houston or San Antonio. I saw him about a month ago at the Galleria. Dude looks a lot younger than 37.

With so many greats with much better individual feats than Horry, I don’t think he should be in hall just for the fact that he was on what seems like 80 championship teams. To me, the hall is a recognition of an individual who impacted the game and left his mark. Horry’s crowning achievement was that he was in the right place, at the right time.
Granted, he hit some big shots…but isn’t that what every player should do if in the position?
As for greatest role player…I still gotta tip my hat to Steve Kerr. He was the most accurate three-point shooter in National Basketball Association history upon his retirement in 2003. Was a crucial piece to all 5 of his championships with some title winning shots to go along with it. Plus, he got punched by Michael Jordan. LOL

Good question AB.
He averaged 34% from the 3, 74% from the charity stripe, just about 5 boards, 2 assists and 7 points a game for his career. That doesn’t sound like hall of fame numbers.
BUT, he is a legit player. He has championship rings to prove it. Come playoffs he was clutch… which was just about every year of his career if I’m not mistaken. That’s pretty ridiculous.
I guess I would give him the nod for the HOF - not because of his numbers, but because of the impact he had on big games. Because I watched him murder teams with ice in his veins. Because he has made teams contenders over and over again. Because he really was one of the best role players to play the game… He was never the guy you talked about having to match up against, and he exploited that for years. Exactly what was asked of him.

The Horry HOF argument is like putting a kicker in the football Hall of Fame. Does Adam Vinateri get into Canton when he retires? A lot of people would say yes, and Horry’s done more than Vinateri.

Like you say at the beginning of every Loser List, you play to win the game. Rob has more titles than ANYONE IN HISTORY that wasn’t on the Celtics dynasty teams. He’s hit HUGE shots in every one of those title runs (even if they did start coming fewer and further between these last few years.) To me, he goes into the Hall, but I can see both sides of the argument…
BUT, greatest role player of all time to me is Dennis Rodman (all he could do was defend and rebound. He was just AMAZING at both so he may not’ve seemed like a role player, but he was) and to me it’s not even close.

Celts Fan says:
@AB, the thing that puts Adam over the top though and makes him a sure-fire HOFer is that Vinatieri kicked 2 TITLE-WINNING kicks. I think Horry absolutely should go in, but the case for Vinatieri is infinitely easier to make.

Are you kidding me? Impact is when you step on the floor and dominate. When nobody can guard you. Murdering teams is hanging 50 on them. Horry hit one or two shots per game. That’s hardly murdering anyone or IMPACTING the game. No way this guy gets into the Hall. He’s severely limited and always thrived off of a double team. He couldn’t create a shot for himself if his life depended on it. This season, that magic double-team kick out to the open shooter clutch play didn’t happen and he couldn’t do ANYTHING else to help out his team. Good riddance.

@Logan Light He MADE teams contenders over and over again?Thats a bit to much credit dont u think. But to the question, hell no he not a hall of famer. If they let Horry in they gotta let everybody in who been getting shitted on so far.We minds will let in Bill Cartwright for his 3.

@Celts Fan — It’s different because it’s not one-and-done in the NBA, but Vinateri also can’t do something like come in for an entire stretch and play well (can’t remember which game of Spurs/Pistons, but Horry had like 20 points in the fourth AND the game-winner).

He should just retire. One of the best clutch shooters the NBA playoffs has ever seen. That’s his legacy. I think people forget how good Horry was when he played for the Rockets at the beginning of his career. He was a monster in some games. I give props to Horry for knowing his strengths and weaknesses and playing within himself.
The one thing you can say about him in favour of the HOF is that he made good teams great and gave them that final push to get them over the hump. If it wasn’t for his clutch performances, a lot of the championship teams he played for wouldn’t have half the rings they do.
And please stop looking at his regular season stats. The playoffs is where the big boys come to play and where the true value of a player is measured. Regular season stats are cool, but championships are the only things that matter.
He may have been lucky, but you have to put yourself in a position to be lucky. Anyone who’s successful will agree with that.

Celts Fan says:
@AB, I agree w/ you. I think Horry should go in, just saying, when you have title winning kicks on your resume, it makes your case a lot easier to make (if Horry’d hit a buzzer-beater in game 7 of the Finals, you know half the guys saying no are saying yes, that’s all I was saying.) and I remember that Spurs game you’re talking about, that’s what got me off the fence and squarely in the He Should Be In mindset.

horry may not be the “star” of anything but the man deserves his place in the hall. he deserves it before guys like mutombo, but there is a huge deke group who want him.7 rings, never missed the sencond round, that is not luck, that is not being at the right place, that is i helped get there. how many STARS can say they have never missed a second round of the playoffs? NOT MANY! how many have more rings them MJ? not many! how many have 2 or more rings with 3 teams? NOT MANY! hell how many have gotten more then 1 ring with more then 1 team? not many.
horry deserves to be in, he is not the flashiest or putting up the biggest numbers but he deserves it for the little things, not only in the right place team wise but on the court too.

See he was the shit and a OG in the game but people overate him.He dont make good teams great. He fits in on great teams. Its a difference and both take skill but Magic makes good teams great not Wide open shot Bob.

Who in they right mind picking Horry over Tum Tum in they primes. Why he aint win a ring in Pheonix if he make good teams great?Because they aint have Dream,Timmy,or Shaq to carry his ass until 1 clutch shot every now and then.

Question…
If Horry was just “lucky” and “right place at right time”, why don’t other players ever match his resume? I mean ya’ll talk like he’s Salley who just rode the pine for the Laker run. Horry was a genuine contributor with clutch shot after clutch shot with Houston, with LA, and with San Antonio.
Last I checked everyone wants to say Barkley isn’t a winner because he doesn’t have a chip. AI isn’t a winner because his finger is ringless. KG apparently just became good this season cuz he finally got his.
But Big Shot Bob has the rings AND made the impact, and all of a sudden being a winner isn’t inmportant.

When we did the Hall of Fame series I was shocked that so many people felt Rasheed Wallace was a HOF’er. If you even think he deserves consideration, Horry is a lock.

austin i completely agree, while wallace may have some higher averages, horry has a better career.
and doc, horry didnt go to a ring with the suns because he was only there for 32 games, cant win a ring in 32 games and then get traded away because you are going to kill the coach. not his fault.

Isn’t KC Jones in the hall? What were his averages? I think Horry gets in due to the sheer weight of his fingers.

Phil says:
Horry gets in the dick riding hall of fame. He just has an HOF agent. I think Mark Madsen is an HOF towel waver.
If you played with Shaq, Kobe, Hakeem and Tim Duncan, you should have rings by default. Let’s put Jon Salley in the HOF as well. Here’s the question: If you’re picking your five for the hall of fame tournament… is Rob not the absolute last pick? I think Cheryl Miller goes before Rob. He’s a utility player who hits open shots.
And for people bringing up Viniateri, it’s not like Adam is a tight-end with career averages of 22 catches per year, who happens to kick clutch field goals. He does everything you could ever ask a kicker to do.
I’d love to have a job where all I need to do is punch in for 350 days of the year as long as I make sure the Christmas party is good.

Anyone who is not good enough to be an NBA All-Star(even once) over the course of a 16-year career is not a Hall of Famer. There are a million other players more deserving before Horry(Rodman, Bernard King, Dennis Johnson, Laimbeer, Vandeweghe, Walter Davis, Rolando Blackman, Michael Cooper, Mitch Richmond, Sidney Moncrief, Dale Ellis, Vinnie Johnson, Ricky Pierce, Detlef Schrempf, Jeff Malone, Theus, Aguirre, Michael Finley, Glen Rice, etc……..). Rings alone do not make a HOF career. Dr.J won only one 1 NBA championship—so, do you honestly think Horry was the same cailber of player?
