Team USA Uniting 20 Days Before Beijing
‘Melo’s singing a different tune in ‘08Twenty days before their embarrassing loss to Puerto Rico in the 2004 Olympics, Team USA met for the first time. But there are few similarities between that group and the one currently assembled, a collection of committed superstars who have spent time touring New York City, training in Vegas, and now entering the last phase of Olympic preparation, still with about 20 days until they open up against China.
Four years ago, the first day of training camp for Team USA really was the first day of training camp, so rudimentary that Carmelo Anthony said “it was almost like you were learning the game of basketball all over again.”
But as Team USA gathered yesterday for the final chapter of their prep at Valley High School, they exuded a totally different feel. It’s far more similar to what Charles Barkley once said about the Olympics - more than administering 40-point whoopings to the rest of the world, his favorite part was playing with some of his close friends.
“You can feel it coming together,” said Deron Williams. “You get chemistry with guys, playing together for a couple of years and you grow to like guys and get to know them, and that definitely helps on the basketball court.”
