The Corey Maggette Sweepstakes

Corey MaggetteWhere will Maggette end up?

Now that the Clips are ready to renounce Corey Maggette’s rights in order to ink Elton Brand after the Baron Davis signing, the 28-year old swingman might have to settle for the mid-level exception during his first year with any of the four or five teams hoping to sign him - the Heat, Magic, Hornets, Jazz, and Celtics.

According to the Deseret News

Citing “a source close to him who requested anonymity because negotiations are still in the early stages,” the Los Angeles Times reported on its Web site Tuesday that “Maggette has been contacted by several NBA teams regarding his availability,” including Orlando, Miami, Boston and Utah.

Now, Maggette doesn’t seem tied to the $11 million that he was reportedly seeking from the Clippers before opting out. Especially with the world champion Celtics are knocking at his door, he’s put winning first.

“It’s not always about money,” Maggette said. “I’ve been in the league a long time and I’ve made a lot of money. I’m tired of losing. I want to get back to the playoffs and win.”

That doesn’t mean he’s got one foot out of Hollywood and the other in Beantown though. The Magic are reportedly putting together a five-year $40 million offer, stacked with more cash after his first year.

“I think he’d come back in a heartbeat,” said one of Maggette’s friends who is close to both the player and the Magic organization. “It’s something he’d love to see happen.”

This N*gga is a bum!!! Point blank!!! period!! He can score, as long as the ball is ALWAYS in his hands, and he’s always injured, Always!!! Dude ain’t ever had a 82 game season, last season he averaged 22 a game I give him that, he played 75 games, but sh*t, who don’t shine when they try to go for a new contract? This dude is a cancer to any team he go to!!

  2. shake&bake says:

It’ll be interesting to see if he really does choose a championship over $$$. I’m sure what his role is on the team is also going to be a factor. I’ve been a big Magette fan since I saw him play in high school so I would like to see him elevate his career to another level.

  3. CHEE says:

    HE WON’T FIT W/ CELTS.
    HE WANTS 35MIN PER GM.
HOW HEGONNA GET THAT W/ ALLEN AND PIERCE ON TEAM.
AND HE WONT GET THE AMOUNT SHOTS HE WANTS.

HE BETTER OFF IN HORNETS. THEY CAN MOVE MO PETE TO SIXTH MAN.

HE CAN’T GO TO UTAH B/C HE WONT GET ALONG W/ SLOAN.

  4. fallinup says:

If Maggette truly wants to win a chip, he’d sign with San Antonio. That’s the piece that they need. But more than likely, the money will talk…he’s a good fit in Orlando as well.

  5. Kudabeen says:

I think the Magic should pick up Corey and trade Turk for a servicable Big who can rebound and hit a J (ala Troy Murphy)

    Magic

    Trade Turk, Redick, Cook

    To Indiana for:

Murphy, David Harrison (sign/trade), and try to talk them in putting Jarrett Jack in the deal.

Murphy’s contract isn’t ideal, but he wouldn’t be required to bang. He can get you 15 and 8. Jack gives you a bigger defensive oriented PG to backup Jameer and Harrison is a project Big that can only improve playing against Dwight and being mentored by Ewing.

Magic would have option to sign and trade Arroyo to Golden State for Pietrus or Matt Barnes (sign and trade) and

    Magic
    PG - Nelso,Jack
SG - Maggette (no more than $7-8 mil), Lee
SF - Lewis, Pietrus or Barnes
    PF - Murphy,Battie,
    C - Dwight, Harrison, Gorat

Than pick up a undrafted Big or cheap young PF project like Dwayne Jones, Louis Amundson

Or they can scrap all of that and just go out and sign Corey Maggette, ?Anthony Johnson (people sleep on him) and Kwame Brown. Re-sign Garrity (paycut), Maurice Evans and still try to sign Harrison and Amundson

Magic would be be totally up graded:

    PG - Nelson, Johnson
    SG - Maggette, Lee
    SF - Lewis, Evans
PF - Brown (Defense), Battie, Amundson (energy)
    C - Dwight, Harrison

The numbers look to check out, unless ownership is going in to cost cutting mode. Either way they won’t be 24million over the cap like last year.

  6. Kudabeen says:

I like the Maggette to Hornets move too. He is a major upgrade over Peterson. Every time I see him he is getting lit up or missing open threes. He is a horrible starting 2. Maggette would sure that up. Also, if they hold on to bonzi. That combo of Bonzi and Maggette would give teams fits IMO…Team still need a shooter at the 2/3 position if they don’t get Pargo back.

  7. Amar says:

maggs to the hornets makes sense, but he’ll get playing time in orlando and miami as well. utah has no playing time for what his talent deserves, but i do think that he would get along with sloan … he played at duke, and duke guys love playing for sloan.

  8. Blue says:

being from la, there are always clipper games on TV, and since i’m a laker hater, i sometimes find myself watching LA’s J.V. squad. maggette is good, but he has very poor judgement on the court. he can score, but he’s a jacker…a ‘volume shooter’ if i may. it looked to me like maggette cost the clips more games than he won for them.
having said that, if he went to a team that had a true heirarchy that can keep him in check like the celtics or maybe even the hornets, then he’d be a good pickup at the MLE.

  9. Ross says:

I agree with fallinup. SA is his best shot right now, assuming he can become a team player in their system.

  10. LakeShow84 says:

    This man is gahbage.. Sorry..

  11. doc says:

As long as Philly dont sign him Im good.We dont want no career losers.

  12. rangerjohn says:

spurs are offering their full mid level exception for about 5.5-5.8 for the 1st yr. i think he can be a solid player on a spurs team. pop, duncan, bowen, manu will keep him “humble” and he will fit great.

i dont like the loss of barry though, and i will have to shoot RC if they sign horry at all or finley for more then the vet minimum.

  13. DaPro says:

Maggette is a volume scorer but he also had the green light from Donald Sterling to play his game since he was a favorite of Sterling

In a different system he might alter his game. Clearly if KG, Paul, and Jesus put egos to the side then Maggette shouldn’t have a problem doing the same

He would be a good fit in Utah. The problem for years has been a gap at the 2. They routinely get lit up for buckets from the 2 slot.

Can Maggette take a backseat and play for Sloan???

  14. hahns says:

    MAGGETTE IS A BUMMMMMMMM

  15. sunni says:

get him out of la, put him on a team with stephon marbury somewhere in turkey

  16. Ashlov says:

If he goes to the Spurs, that’s just wrong.

  17. Dave says:

Spurs are going to be very tough to stop with Maggette. He’s the extra scorer and the type of scorer (bullish, gets to the line) that team desperately needs to balance itself.

  18. MoxWestCoastRep says:

Kuda- amundson is trash. He’s a D-leaguer dude for real
Murphy would thrive in Orlando tho, you’re right.

  19. K Dizzle says:

    Trade Turkoglu? For real?

  20. Big V says:

Excuse me, but where the HELL does Corey Maggette fit in in Boston? SG? Ray Allen. SF? P-Dub. He can’t play the 4, 5, or 1. Does he come off the bench? Does he split minutes with PP or Ray? I woulnd’t think a team that just won a chip would want to mess with their core unit like that. All this talk is really ridiculous.

  21. Kudabeen says:

    MoX,

Every team needs a trash man. I guarantee you he would be a big defensive help given spot minutes and he finishes well around the basket. A poor man’s David Lee, but Sixer’s never gave him burn in the regular season, so I’ll reserve further praise for his energetic style of play at another time.

    @ K Dizzle,

You think Turkoglu is for real? I’m just not convinced he will help take Orlando to the next level. I always liked his versatility, but he needs to get up off the ball and let Rashard earn his keep and Jameer be a PG. a lot of times it looked like he was running his own offense out there, which is cool is he is the number 1 or 2 guy, but for development sake, dude is a 3rd option on that team or should be. They can’t let Rashard hide. He needs to work and know that he is the guy that has to make shots.

  22. AY says:

when someone says “it’s not about the money”, it’s all about the money. he will go to the highest bidder, which is either utah or orlando.

  23. Dagomar says:

Word from Yahoo! sports is that the Spurs are the front runner here. That could be scary for the rest of the West.

  24. todd says:

As a Spurs fan, I do hope the Spurs get him. That way Manu can start and Maggette can be that scorer off the bench. Maggette has all the tools to become a great defender, being in the SA system and being a 3rd option on O will improve his D. They’ve won the championship with 3 scorers, imagine what they’d do with 4. I’m smelling a dynasty!

I’d also love him on the Magic, Turk-Lewis-Maggette-Howard can come out of the East.

I hope he doesn’t sign with the Celtics and take a free ride. He’s still in his prime. He can be a bigger contributor elsewhere. Come to San Antonio Corey.
