NBA 2008 Top Free Agent Point Guards

The free agent season is underway. Who’s out there that can make your team better (or worse)? We’ve gone position by position: Centers, Power Forwards, Small Forwards, Shooting Guards, and now the Point Guards…

Gilbert Arenas (26 y/o, 19.4 ppg, 5.1 apg, 1.8 spg) — The Wizards didn’t let their franchise guy sit out there on the market for long, agreeing to a six-year, $111 million deal with Arenas last week. Pretty sure it’s the biggest contract ever signed by a guy coming off a season where he played 13 games and averaged 10 points per in the playoffs.

Baron Davis (29 y/o, 21.8 ppg, 7.6 apg, 2.3 spg) — When the Warriors wouldn’t offer Baron more guaranteed years, the Clippers snatched him up with a five-year, $65 million agreement. But is Baron’s history of injuries going to pop up and burn the Clips yet again?

Jose Calderon (26 y/o, 11.2 ppg, 8.3 apg, 1.1 spg) — The Raptors traded away T.J. Ford and reached an agreement for five years and $40 million in re-up money for Calderon. Behind Chris Bosh and maybe Jermaine O’Neal, he’s been put in place as Toronto’s most valuable asset.

Chris Duhon (25 y/o, 5.8 ppg, 4.0 apg) — Is he really the answer for the Knicks? Duhon is set to sign with the team for two years and about 11.8 million this week. His arrival could signal the departure of Stephon Marbury.

Sam Cassell (38 y/o, 11.2 ppg, 3.9 apg) — He still has his moments, but they’re coming fewer and farther between.

Jason Williams (32 y/o, 8.8 ppg, 4.6 apg) — Forget being a shell of the old “White Chocolate.” J-Will is a shell of the guy who helped Miami win a ‘chip in 2006. He could still start for some teams, though.

Shaun Livingston (22 y/o, N/A) — It’ll take a big leap of faith to sign Livingston, but his youth, size and natural ability make him an intriguing possibility despite the injury concerns.

Delonte West (24 y/o, 8.3 ppg, 3.8 apg) — After getting inconsistent playing time with the Sonics, Delonte’s public audition as the Cavs’ starter saw him put up 10.3 points and 4.5 assists a night. And in Cleveland’s season-ending Game 7 loss to the Celtics, West was the only guy other than LeBron who seemed up for the challenge.

Beno Udrih (26 y/o, 12.8 ppg, 4.3 apg) — Showed this past season that he’s better than anyone thought. The Kings have already agreed to terms with Udrih on a five-year deal.

Sebastian Telfair (23 y/o, 9.3 ppg, 5.9 apg) — The jumper and defense still need work, but otherwise Bassy is quick with a handle and passing ability. He logged more starts (51) and minutes (32 mpg) this year than ever before in his career. He’s got room to grow.

Tyronn Lue (31 y/o, 5.8 ppg, 1.5 apg) — Who knew he was over 30? Lue still looks like he did when he was a rookie. He has a handful of contenders after him.

Carlos Arroyo (28 y/o, 6.9 ppg, 3.5 apg) — Every basketball head I’ve asked is pretty much split 50/50 on whether Arroyo is good or if he stinks. I think when he’s playing free without looking over his shoulder, he can give you some good PG play.

Keyon Dooling (28 y/o, 8.1 ppg, 1.8 apg) — Similar to Tony Allen, except he can dribble the ball past halfcourt without losing it.

Jacque Vaughn (33 y/o, 4.1 ppg, 2.1 apg) — How does a guy play guard in the League for more than a decade and NEVER develop a jumper?

Anthony Johnson (33 y/o, 5.6 ppg, 3.8 apg) — You’re not in terrible shape if he’s your #2 point guard.

Anthony Carter (33 y/o, 7.8 ppg, 5.5 apg, 1.5 spg) — You are in trouble if he’s your #1 point guard.

Chris Quinn (24 y/o, 7.8 ppg, 3.0 apg) — Never would have thought that Quinn would be going on three years in the League out of Notre Dame while Chris Thomas is the one playing overseas.

Darrell Armstrong (40 y/o, 2.5 ppg, 1.5 apg) — The team that gets him is getting more of an assistant coach than a backup guard.

Lindsey Hunter (37 y/o, 2.4 ppg, 1.4 apg) — Same here.

Damon Stoudamire (34 y/o, 5.3 ppg, 2.8 apg) — He’s only interested in playing for a contender, but then again probably wants to get more PT than what he got with San Antonio.

Kevin Ollie (35 y/o, 1.8 ppg, 1.0 apg) — You could’ve told me he was 45 and I would’ve believed you.

Smush Parker (27 y/o, 5.9 ppg, 3.0 apg) — A little more than a year ago he was entrenched as the starting point guard of the L.A. Lakers and getting playoff burn. What happened?

What happened to Smush parker is that he fell out of favor w/ Phil Jackson & I’ll assume Kobe then Jordan Farmar came along and finally he choked (literally) his way out of Miami.

Arenas is a Point Guard? Really?!?!

    @jay rich

Yeah Wags had some kind of stomach virus that ate up his intestines. Nasty. If kevin Olie is on your free agent list that is straight up trash. J-will is fading fast. Its like he doesn’t want to play anymore. The heat should resign him if they can’t get bassy he is the only one left with skills.

ok man i was jus wonderin cuz jauny had hella game as 4 the rest of this list everybody on here sucks except the ppl who have reported deals i mean come on there are better back ups than some of these guys if you think about it you put somebody like marcus williams on here and he’s in the top 10 on here i say jus wait draft a guy and keep him cuz the pickins is slim

  10. GEE...be still boy no need for static says:

Hope Houston doesn’t get lured in to trying to look to one of these dudes as the answer.

Still I would put Shaun on just to see what he could do. He could turn out to be a great back-up and sit the bench if nothing else.

  11. Yoooo says:

In defense of Jacque, Kidd still can’t soot and he’s considered a top 2 PG of all time… Go figure

  12. Yoooo says:

In defense of Jacque, Kidd still can’t soot and he’s considered a top 2 PG of all time. And the other guy who’s considered the greatest PG ever, Magic, couldn’t shoot worth a damn either… Go figure.

  13. Kobeef says:

Delonte and Bassy are the best of what’s left because they are both still young and will still improve. .

Before Bassy got injured he was averaging something like 7-8 assists/game, not many turnovers and shooting a high percentage. As a starter Bassy could average 12-15 pts, 7-8 assists.

Delonte is a big PG (6-4) and can really score/shoot. He is a bit unstable but is a great athlete with real skill.

  14. doc says:

    Juanny got that hot shit.

  15. daquest?on says:

arroyo is good, he aint a super star but he is good, see his stats when he was starting for the magic, all his stats were better and so was the magic team/lose record. remember that he was the starting pg in the jazz a few years ago and he put decent stats 12 ppg 7 assits even had a couple of 30 point games, he was supposed to be the one two punch with boozer. also remember that the pistons( larry brown) wanted him to be the backup point guard and eventually be the starting pg when billups was done, he was traded to the magic when larry brown left. THE only problem is that he is uncoachable, he feuded with jerry sloan and thats why he got traded. Most people who say he sucks say this because they probably have seen him play very little and he had inconsistent minutes with the magic. Stan Van Gundy had arroyo on a leash and he dint couldnt do anything plus arroyo had 14 assits on one half agaisnt the sonics a while back All doubters just watch the olympic games and see for yourself if he is good or not.

  16. Luigi says:
