Two Spots Open for USA Select Team; Auditions in Vegas
Who’s testing Kobe?NBA TV’s Rick Kamla broke the news during last night’s Blazers/Wizards game that two players from the Vegas Summer League will be added to the USA Basketball Select Team that will scrimmage against LeBron, Kobe, Kidd and the rest of the Olympic squad later this month. Jerry Colangelo hasn’t decided which two players it will be, though.
Looking at the current Select roster and then looking at who’s in the Vegas league (HERE and HERE), who should get those two spots?

Al Thornton and Nate Robinson are probably the best players in the Vegas League rosters with NBA experience. But OJ Mayo and Kevin Love would be cool if they go for rookies since many “experts” say Love plays European and you know Mayo’s gonna try to take it everytime Kobe guards him. Watching Mayo get humbled by Kobe (like how Mayo humbled Stephenson a couple years ago) = Priceless.

Austin Burton says:
If you want to replicate what Team USA will be seeing in the Olympics, I’d go for someone like Kevin Love and Donte Greene; a fundamentally-sound big man and a tall shooter.

Nate Robinson is not in Vegas for summerleague

How bout putting Caron Butler in one of those spots and adding the Tough Juice in this mix???
July 15th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Austin Burton says:
He’s going to be. Nate didn’t play yesterday because he’d played in D-Wade/Zo’s charity game the night before and was still on his way to Vegas.

Austin Burton says:
Guys like Caron, KG and Pierce aren’t going to be on a squad to scrimmage Team USA. It’s reserved for youngsters. Iguodala is the oldest guy on the team I think.

tee says:
How about the youngs? Nick and Thad.

Bruce says:
Don’t bring Kevin “Cecil Turtle” Love. Dude is too slow.
Bring OJ, he will learn by the numbers.
Kobe from Full Metal Jacket — I got your name, I got your ass, you will learn by the numbers, I will teach you.

Let’s go real Euro with Bellinelli and Gallo?!
Its just practice!
July 15th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Austin Burton says:
Love’s no slower than a lot of the international PFs and centers they’ll be facing in the Olympics.

Dime Magazine says:
I like adding Love to the mix. Team USA is so thin up front, they need all the practice they can get against physical big men.

Id say gallinari and bellini would be a good choice to mix in w all the athletic youngsters the practice squad has. Nice call. Or maybe love and gallinari. But gallo is probably a lock if cangelo is calling the shots

Austin Burton says:
Gallo and Belinelli have their loyalties to the Italian national team. This is a USA Basketball thing. They’re out.

if team USA played against a shaq led team, or even a duncan led team, with FIBA rules (not much hand checking like the NBA which has been guard oriented in the last four years to speed things up and increase ratings), they’d lose just because they don’t have anyone to stop legit post up players.
i wouldnt be surprised if that big dude from greece hopped on board and once again brutalized team usa.
boozer’s too short and not that tough in D. howard relies more on athleticism. bosh it too skinny and finesse.
why didnt team usa get miller (who plays the inside game like most euro centers), chandler or camby again?
July 15th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Bron42 had springs before slamball says:
cuz miller was pretty much useless in the actual tourny…
I do agree, we need more euro style players to practice against instead of just any old hyped rookie like mayo. What good would practing against mayo do when his style isn’t international which is what their supposed to be gettin ready for. If the league was smart, they’d get some summer league guys who have recently been playin overseas instead of just some big name inexperience rookie. If your gonna get better practice against your opponents style, not your own.

gotta be oj and love at this point but could be love with one of the two if they want a big.
