We Reminisce: Larry Johnson’s 4-point Play

On their way to the 1999 Finals, the Knicks benefited from what some people still call one of the worst ref calls in basketball history. In the closing seconds of Game 3 of the conference finals, Larry Johnson knocked down a game-tying triple over Antonio Davis, who was whistled for a foul that was questionable to say the least. LJ stuck the ensuing free throw to give NY the win, and they’d go on to win the series in six. Johnson scored 26 that night and, bad call aside, his three-pointer and free throw were two amazingly clutch shots.

(While we’re on the topic of bad calls, have you ever actually seen the call that led to Rumeal Robinson’s NCAA championship-winning free throws for Michigan over Seton Hall in ‘89? For my money, that’s the worst call ever on a big stage.)

  3. MoxWestCoastRep says:

riddled with back problems. He could have been amongst the all-time great PFs not for the injuries

@ Austin – This is a cool series Austin. Is ‘We Reminisce’ going to become a daily feature at Dime? It’s a lot like the ‘Ballin’ feature at my site.

  5. Kobe says:

    this post is useless still

  6. TJ says:

It looks like AD grabbed/came down a little on LJ when he was dribbling right before the shot. Was that where they called the foul?

  7. Garcia Vega says:

Good post. this was the highlight of Larry Johnson’s career, sad to say.

lj was nasty before the injuries

looks to me like he was fouled before the shot as he was dribbling, rather than on the shot itself. still clutch, controversial or not

    LJ Career Highlights

UNLV — Undefeated but lost the championship game to Duke
Drafted by the Hornets. Signed for $84 Million. Grandmama, Converse React sneakers (You moved one way, reaction system moved the other), teasing Kendall Gill, and hurted his back.

Not sure how he got on the Knicks roster. The fight with Zo, this article, the LJ symbol, and pocketing $30 Million before retiring.

When he was a Knicks, dude took nights off. Why because they had H2O and Ewing. He got his went he wanted it.

love it… thats the season i became a knick fan… too bad my team hasn’t even had a sniff of real excitement ever since

LJ was nice, especially at his size. I could see a hold before the shot. The ref probably got his arm up thinking that the hold mucked johnson’s shot, but didn’t, and had to stick with his gut, in the moment, call.

By the way…former players should start officiating. They make the best officials. Hit me up is interested.

    if interested
