We Reminisce: Michael Jordan’s College Debut, UNC vs. Kansas
Back in 1981, Michael Jordan made his North Carolina debut as a freshman starter against Kansas. “Mike Jordan,” as the announcers called him, was already getting comparisons to David Thompson at this point, but that doesn’t stop Dean Smith from giving the kid the hook five minutes into the game. MJ was in foul trouble throughout and finished with a modest 12 points in the Carolina win, where we get cameos from James Worthy, Sam Perkins and Matt Doherty. “I like Jordan’s overall game,” said UNC point guard Jimmy Black afterwards. “He’s a competitor and a hustler and we need him on the floor.”

I liked when the announcer shouted out “SHOWTIME!” when Worthy made that scooping layup. Fortune teller.
