What is your greatest video-game moment?
KD @ last year’s Rookie Photo ShootA recent addition to Dime’s What’s My Name? feature is the Life/Style Q&A, where we go outside the main story and ask up-and-coming high school and college ballplayers stuff like, “What sneakers do you wear off the court?” or “What’s the first CD you ever bought?” Another question I’ve asked a lot is, “What’s your greatest video-game moment?” And I’ve noticed almost all of the answers involve a kid beating their dad or beating an older brother or cousin on the sticks.
At first I was thinking that in this era of child obesity and kids playing too many video games (the Nintendo Wii is considered legit exercise now), beating Pops or Big Brother at NBA Live or Madden had become the equivalent to beating them in a driveway 1-on-1. Then I remembered that it’s always just better when you beat an actual person at a game than smashing the CPU. I’ve pulled a Wilt and cracked 100 points in a basketball game three times (Shaq, Kobe and LeBron) against CPU, but those weren’t as satisfying as beating Cass’ digi-Erik Morales silly with my digi-Marco Antonio Barrera in a Fight Night Dime office battle, or giving another sports magazine’s lifestyle editor a hot 45 with Kevin Durant in Sony’s NBA 08 while we waited for Amare Stoudemire to show up for an event. (He knows who he is.)

This was when the PS1 was hot, and the football game NFL GameDAY first came out. Some buddies of mine had been playing the game for like 3 or 4 days. Got tired of playing each other and wanted a new “whipping boy” to play. So they invited me over. I never had touched the game before, but dished out ASS POUNDINGS, like in a prision movie to new cellmates, ALL NIGHT LONG…They got so mad they threw me out of there house around 930pm…THEY NEEDED TO SLEEP THEY SAID…We didnt talk to each other for a few weeks…SISSY’s

It was PHX vs. LAL xbox live on NBA 2k8. I was down 37 at halftime… i thought about quitting bcuz no one could make a damn shot. Nash was shotting like jack vaughn (spurs) and amare looked like rasho nesterovic. I stuck through it after 3 i cut it to 20 and kobe already had 48 pts. During the 4th i shot 5-5 from beyond the arc all consecutive buckets with nash and than ran the pick and roll with STAT. During the last 5 seconds I was down 2 with no timeouts left. I had Bell throwing it in… NO one was open except for Amare BUT he was out in three pt range. I gave it to him he shot it and BANG! Swishhhh!!! Final score 114-113.

alright so me and my boy were arguing for months about who the best in fight night round 3..i had the golden boy and he had winky…he was whopping my ass for like the first 3 rounds…he put me on my ass 3 times..as soon as i got up from the 3 knockdown i knew it was over for him…as i start coming back i started my phrase “YOU CAN KNOCK ME DOWN BUT IM NEVER OUT” LOL and my dudes in the background started yelling it too..When i finally knocked him out in the 7th round i was running around my basement like an animal just screaming my chant lol….he was in complete disbelief…Too this day he never brings that fight up and still blames the cpu for cheating

Finally understanding football enough and madden enough to beat my older cousing in madden (think it was 94). He would always blow my and my younger cousins out and laugh at us and just “act an ass”, so when I was beating him he was getting more and more frustrated and he even tried hitting the controller out of my hands.
When he knocked the controller out my hand once I got a pass off and he lost focus on the man he selected (who was the guy guarding Herman Moore). I got a 80 yard TD off that to add on to thrashing I gave him. I had a running style that was untouchable. Prior to all the juke and spin moves added to madden I was doing them in my own way. The fact that I had Barry Sanders was just icing. He always plays with the Eagles…
After a 31point W I’m grinning ear to ear, he slams his controller looks around the room at everyone looking at him grinning. As I start to laugh and start giving him some of what he was giving us for years in all games…He punches me dead in the chest…One of those spit come out your mouth type punches. I fall out the chair coughing and laughing hard as hell, because he was so pissed he actually hit his 11-12 year old cousin because he could no longer pick up the “pad” (now it’s called ‘sticks’ with the analog) and think he was going to do what he wanted…
It hurt, but I don’t remember the pain as much as the sheer thrill of being “That Dude” among the group of “youngins” to first step into that level of competitive gamer…
Next came Street Fighter domination and I’ve been holding down the NBA Live title since Showtime…I’ll be servin’ cats online if 09 is worth playing this year…I may end up converting to Sony’s NBA 09′…Live has been lacking a little…

in nba2k8 or 7, i was celts and i play vs my older cousin who beats me like 9 out of 10 gms.

i coouldnt get pierce the ball for last shot.

everytime i try to step closer, my cuz’s defender kept pushing me backward.
finally i had to jack a 3pt shot like two steps behind 3pt line.
i some how made it.
my cuz argue that the gm is rigged cuz he think the shot didnt leave the hand on time.
i was so pumped, i jump up and down and watch the replay in every possible angle.

both of these were with the setting on the hardest level. anyone can do this crap on easy:
against the comp., I once won the MVP in a late 90′s Live w/ Tony Delk (doing my best CP3 impression, dude could swipe and dish, I could get the layups, he had an ok mid-range, and everyone else took care of the rest. Ended up with something like 15, 10, 5 and 4) I didn’t try, it just worked out that way since I run an offense where the PG usually dominates the ball, probe and kick out, etc. so my PGs usually win MVP anyway, but pulling it off w/ Tony Delk is still something I wouldn’t believe if I hadn’t done it myself!
Against a friend in Madden 07, I ran for 350 yards with Reggie Bush, had another 120 receiving, 1 completed HB pass, 6 total TDs and a friend that punched me square in the nuts when I completed the HB pass late in the game, already up A TON. I probably deserved it…

Madden on the PS2, one of the years when the 49ers had Garrison Hearst and Terrell Owens. I was up on the Redskins by a few points with like 10 seconds left. I had honestly been trying to run out the clock, but this was either before they had “QB Kneel” on Madden or maybe I was just running it up the middle because I didn’t like kneeling; either way, the ‘Skins D couldn’t stop me so I ended up on inside the 10 with a few seconds left. For some reason I decided to take one last crack at the end zone, just being a dick, and of course karma stepped in. Karma in the form of Champ Bailey, who picked off my pass intended for T.O. and took it to the house. Devastating, but I totally had it coming.

5) MLB ’07 The Show, had Chase Utley hit for the cycle and Ryan Howard hit 4 HRs in the same game.
4) Madden ’05, scored 115 points with the Falcons. Michael Vick accounted for 11 touchdowns, 8 rush/3 pass.
3) NBA Live ’05, scored 102 points w/ Baron Davis with 5 minute quarters. Scored 42 points in the 2nd quarter.
2) MLB ’07 The Show, threw a perfect game w/ Johan Santana.
1) NBA Live ’04, 18 point comeback with less than 2 minutes remaining. This was especially sweet since I had never been beaten at this particular version of Live, and my friend was using an All-Star team while I used the Pistons (81 rating). When I cut the lead in half with about a minute remaining, you could see him thinking, “NOT AGAIN.” Having that kind of psychological stranglehold on a game over your friends, that’s just priceless.

Me, my younger brother and my little cousins were all at the house playing Gran Turismo on PS1. My cousin Nick was the youngest one there, but his dad is a car freak and so he’s always been nice at racing games. Nick’s destroying all of us one-by-one in race after race (I’m like 21 at the time and he’s 10 years old), until finally my cousin Brandon (12 y/o) — who was historically the worst one at the game — somehow started giving Nick a serious run. With one or two laps to go in their head-to-head, Brandon’s in the lead and Nick is getting nervous, ’cause he’s been saying all day that he’s unbeatable. So Nick gets up and “accidentally” hits the RESET button and gives the most s***-eating “Oops!” you’ve ever seen. We were all just sitting there in shock at how blatantly he bailed out. He’s 15 now and we still give him crap about that.

Most recent though I would say going to NY and getting busy.
I got a lil cuz (freshmen in college) who is like a real sports dude, trophies everywhere in football (QB) and basketball. Plus he is at that age where he really caught up in him. So I was up in NY for dude’s graduation and we decided to fire up the 360 (which I don’t really play a lot cause I am on the station). So I didn’t know the controller really and nothing about the game.
He was like you wanna try me in the NBA (which I hadn’t played yet at all on any system). I was like aight bet. Dude is a Kobe mark, I mean he is short of declaring Kobe is the G.O.A.T. I wasn’t trippin though, if I am correct of course I ran with my Rockets.
He was trying to blow me up with Kobe, and basically letting Mamba get almost every shot.
Pimpin didn’t know I am old skool, I grew up in having that Nintendo Power age lol. Straight took it to homey in his state and crib and did him up right.
Dude ain’t wanna play no mo when we was done.
Always a nice vacation when you can leave the south for a minute and go north just to hand out the beat down. His advisors should have forewarned him.

i played this guy [rank top 2000] i was the Wiz n he was the Nuggets. the first 3 mins of the game. Gil hits like 4-5 threes in a row. n by the end of the half. he scores like 40-50 pts. THEN he doesnt stop in the 2nd half n i sit everybody on my bench xcept 4 gil so i have Gil. Donnell. Blatche. Songalia. and Pech. on the floor. and by the mid of the 4th Q. gil had like 86pts. then the guy plug pulls. SO FUCKING PISSED but it felt good.
I also played this guy [rank top 2500] My wiz vs the Cavs. im down basically the whole game. but i kept it consistently down by 3-7 range. n everytime he made a run. i made a run. so im down by 2 but he has the ball n there was a 3 sec. diff in the shot clock. he doesnt realize it but Big Z is called for 3 sec violation. n i have the ball. [its in CLE] theres 8sec left in the shot clock. Gil has the ball i try to drive it in to force OT. but didnt happen so i went back to the 3 pt line. and with 0.5 left. i shoot n the buzzer goes off…..and…..swishhh….heartbreaker to LeBron! felt so good.
BTW ive had so many buzzer beaters with Gil its scary. [online n w/friends]
Okay now heres when i played my friend. hes the Hornets. im the Wiz. n it goes triple OT. he missed a buzzer in the 1st OT n i missed a buzzer in the 2nd OT. n then so in the 3rd OT. he has the ball but shoots too early. [had West Open] n he missed it. so theres 4 seconds left. hes tightly guarding me w/CP3 so i cant do anything so Gil shoots a 35ft shot. it went through the net. n i srysly didnt think it was gonna go in. but it did. n my friend never played me again.

In Madden ’07 I was in the same situation as you, only when I dropped back to pass in the Red Zone, Matt Leinart (I did a fantasy draft – playing w/ the Pats isn’t fun when they’re STACKED and you should run ish w/ them – and ended up w/ him at QB, shoulda known not to trust a rookie doing that crap) anyway, Leinart tosses a fade to Randy Moss that gets picked off by Terrance Newman, who of course runs it back 90 yards to win the game as it ends. This was late in the season, so I’d put in some work. I was PISSED. I chucked the controller, which hit the PS2 and turned off the game during the Autosave. bye bye franchise…

In the 07 version I hit 16 treys with Raja Bell (who I hate) in a 20 minute game.
In 08 I recorded 29 assists with Chris Paul on Superstar level
On 08 I came back from 21 pts down in the 4th to win(5 min qtr) against a guy who was talking mad ish! I could go on..

Me and my college roommate Christian (not the one who works at Dime) have a theory that everyone has a video game “prime,” and it’s usually between the ages of 13 and 17.
We’ve determined that it’s because when you’re that age, odds are you can’t leave the house as much or go kick it like when you’re grown, so you spend a lot of hours playing games. Plus, using a basketball game as an example, you’re old enough to understand the game beyond “Trying to score 80 points with my superstar” and you realize the importance of things like rebounding and defense. Lastly, kids that age (from what I see) are usually the ones actually reading video game magazines, so they’re up on all the advances and codes and what-not.
I’m pretty certain that 14-year-old me could destroy 26-year-old me in any video game.

I think as you get older you get more into certain types of games. And whatever you are really into I doubt a 14 year old you could destroy a 26 year old you cause you know more. He might get you say 3 out of 7 but in the long run I can’t see a youngin beating me in something I am really into.

@AB, that’s true, but there’s also the renaissance in college. You’re not reading up as much, but living in a dorm, where everyone’s door is open, and you can just wander from room to room, you endup playing a lot w/ friends during the days instead of studying. Anyone that’s good at Madden (or any other 2 player game) will get challenged to at least 2 or 3 games a day during weekdays. If you get a big apt./live in a frat house, you’re also living with TONS of dudes looking to do anything but study, and let’s face it, you need to find something to do while you wait for the keg (or, much more sloppily, after the keg’s empty but you’ve got the spins too bad to fall asleep.) You’re not in your absolute prime, but you’ve still got it. I’d compared it to MJ’s 2nd stint w/ the Bulls. He wasn’t Air Jordan anymore, but he made up for it with little tricks he’d learned along the way. His game changed, but his dominance stayed the same.

breaking out 26million points on Tony Hawk American Wasteland. I’ll break anyone in that game, dollar a point (one of my friends, thanks to shit talking, still owes me $2.9Mill–he worked off $8Million in dishes and vacuuming, and loading dank bowls, but I’m not forgiving or forgetting).
I love beating my boy Ansonious in 2K8, really the only person that gives me a legit run for my money whenever we play. One time he replaced my whole damn squad with exact replicas of me (5’9″, 150, white) and forced me to play him because I told him I could take him with “any team”.
But, for real, beating Halo on Legendary was a moment I really felt I accomplished something.

what speed do most of you guys play on? i play on 80-100 depending on if my bro is playing iwth me, i go online though and every game is on 50.. unbearably slow man

This is by far my favourite moment: playing NBA Live 95, down 12 with one minute left, i am pacers my friend is Orlando, Travis Best hits a 3…cuts it nine….steal best another 3….down to six…30 seconds left….another steal three by r.miller…down three with 10 seconds left..my friend “If i lose this i am scratching the disc!!!”…of course i steal again and bang a buzzer beater 3 with T.Best to send it OT. Best hits the game winner in OT…my friend rushes for the disc but it is ripped from his hands moments before it would meet its doom.

my friend and i were espn 2k5 addicts… and my friend, a piston fan, had perfected the art of ‘detroit basketball’ in the game… which meant that in most games i could beat him, but whenever he took detroit i lost… i had my own touch of untouchability, as everytime i took a larry bird team (80′s east, or any shuffled team), i never lost…
so just to prove a point, we played 80s east vs. the pistons, but the deal was that i was only going to use bird to score whereas he could do anything he wanted.. so he set the settings such that the pistons would constantly triple team larry bird, and me being cocky, made sure that 90% of my larry legend shots were 3-pointers
down by 6 in the fourth, i went on a session where bird made 12 straight threes, and a total of 14 in just one quarter, including the game winning 3…. all while being triple teamed by the best defence in the league. it was just obvious that everytime offensive possetion, i would take a bird three pointer, and i still made it
that was beautiful.

I got three good ones. On NBA Live 95 I beat my brother by scoring a 101 points by shooting mostly 3s with Danny Ainge. I still bring that up every now and then.
On Live 2001 I believe I hit a a game winner with Allan Houston to win the NBA championship against the computer in Game 6
On NBA 2k2 or 2K3 I can’t remember I was over one of my boys house I had the Lakers he had the Celtics. This was back when the Lakers had Lindsay Hunter and for some reason I could play with him. I would come down and just pull 3s. So the game is down to the buzzer I’m down 2 and I hit the game winner with Lindsay Hunter! A bunch of us are there and we are laughing are asses off. Except for dude that got beat of course. It was one of those things where you knew I was going to give it to Hunter of all people, and he still made it. Game Over. I win. I’m running all over the house laughing and joking, me and my peeps still laugh about that to this day.

Man, I remember in NBA ’06 for PS2, my best friend bought it and a week later he was challenging me even when I had never played it, I was a NBA Live guy. So I’m learning the layout and he’s torching my ass. First game was a 30-piecing loss. But games 2 and onwards were another story… I love my Spurs lol.

This was back when Terrell Owens still played for my team the SF Niners. I played one of my little brothers friends in a game of Madden (forget which year). So he picked the Raiders and we have a battle of the bay. The game is tied all the way until the fourth quater and he scores a touchdown with no more than a min left on the clock. By the time he kicke off to me there was maybe 50 sec left. I recieved the ball on like the 5 yard line. My first 3 plays I either get blitzed and throw the ball away or I’m incomplete pass. So it’s 4th down and one last play left with about 20 secs left and time for one more play…win or lose. So I let Jeff Garcia let it fly and bam it hits T.O. and about the 55 yard line with about 3 defenders to beat. I juke the first guy, brush off the second guy and no kidding get tackled by the third guy and some how some way throw him off me and run in for the touchdown and the win. Anyone who has played Madden any year knows how hard this is to do. With the way they make the defense if you get touched by anyone you go down for sure. This was some kind of miracle. I still brag about that game until this day. The greatest part is everyone was there to witness how he talked crap the whole game to have that happen in the last seconds…classic!!!
