Amare Stoudemire: The bad defense isn’t my fault

Amare StoudemireAmare Stoudemire, Dime #14

In an interview with a Phoenix Suns TV program, Amare Stoudemire praises new coach Terry Porter while taking a backhanded swipe at Mike D’Antoni:

“I love Terry Porter, his method,” Stoudemire says in the interview. “His way of coaching is going to be great for us. You know, he’s extremely focused on the defensive end, something that we haven’t practiced at all in the previous three years, and now we’re definitely practicing and improving on the defensive end.”

Now from a team standpoint, I can almost believe STAT’s claim that D’Antoni didn’t practice defense. I’ve talked to Team USA players like D-Wade and Carlos Boozer about the way D’Antoni would perk up in practice when it came time to work on offense, but was almost invisible during defensive time. But never one defensive drill in three years? He didn’t have an assistant whose job was to focus on defense?

And if Amare is looking to blame D’Antoni for his own personal defensive deficiencies, he’s in the wrong. At the pro level, every player has to take it upon himself to improve individual parts of his game, including defense. I’m sure D’Antoni’s lessons didn’t include, “Stand straight up while Mehmet Okur blows by you for a dunk.”

Amare, you maybe one of the sickest offensive PF in the league, but watching you play man to man D is like watching Chucky Hayes shoot free throws. Don’t blame the coach even though D’Antoni is not a defensive specialist. Shoot Raja Bell and Shawn Marion played D and they are/were your teamates so you have no one to blame but yourself. btw FIRST!

STAT definately isn’t the best defender, and you definately can’t lay the entire blame on D’Antoni. But I definately think It was a collective effort. I think the one reason though STAT hasn’t developed in to a quality defender is because in his entire tenure with the Phoenix Suns there has not been one coach he’s had who’s really emphasized the importance of defense. Now let’s say STAT was drafted by say the Spurs, it is possible that he’d be a better defender with Poppovich teaching him through his rookie season and so forth.

  • Mike

As great as STAT is, he is an athlete first, basketball player second. His game lacks fundamentals everywhere, not just on defense. Maybe Porter is taking the time to point out the mistakes any freshman learns in a good high school program.

  • David Brandon

man, whats up w/ players always tryin to roast their old coaches though??

  • Tha Boddy

STAT is not even considered a bad defender…he gets his block a game and if the person you gotta guard every night is a high scorer any1 is gonna get burned…Kobe gets destroyed by other offensive players all the time but they find a way to give him All-NBA first defense…what a crock of bull.

Oh and Ranger John McCains own Step sister has no love for him…if not your family then who???

  • Prof. TX

Just like any other break-up, it’s easier to blame it all on your ex than to admit that you did some thing wrong too. D’Antoni leaves town and suddenly the lack of defense is his fault and not that Amare was too busy chasing blocks to play any other kind of defense. Even if defense wasn’t coached, Marion and Bell figured out how to play some.

  • Scott

Here’s the question of the day, if Amare went to College would he be a better defender?

  • hahns

amare is a sick athlete…so if he learns some defensive mechanice, ppl comin in the paint better watch out or their stuff is getting swatted

  • Ansonious

As a suns fan I agree he should be stepping it up on the defensive end but to say he’s an athlete first is bs. I’d say that about Dwight Howard cause he has no game except rebounding, and dunking on you which is the reason why the pistons destroy the magic come playoff time.
At least Amare can shoot, dunk, make free throws, and when he wants to get rebounds. But defense hasn’t been his specialty by any means also his ability to committ stupid fouls early in games doesn’t help his cause either. We shall see if the suns finally start playing d and hope the league doesn’t allow that hack a Shaq shit at all this year. That shit was some of the most disgraceful basketball I’d ever seen and I prey the league won’t allow it from here on out.

  • Ansonious

    GO SUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • kevin k

First he blames his D on the position that he used to play which was a C even though he was suppose to play the 4, and now he blames in on his ex coach. When Steve Nash retires, STAT is going to blame on NASH for making him use all his energy on the pick and roll…

  • http://dimemag.com Austin Burton

@Ansonious — If Shaq made his free throws, it wouldn’t be an issue. You don’t see anyone doing Hack-a-STAT, do you?

  • Ansonious

@ austin burton You don’t see anyone else doing it at all. Which is why I choose to believe that it is bs and doesn’t make for good basketball. Only allowing a player to come onto the court and have free throw contest(literally,) against the opposing team is a joke not basketball. Whats next for the spurs going for gold in the special olympics?

  • Ian the statboy

    suns fans are my favs
your championship windos is closed my man and it was the spurs that killed them
shaq has 25 years in the league and cant hit the easiest shot in the game
his lazy ass shoulds practiced all these years so dont blame one team for being a disgrace when is one of your players thats an embarassment

is this the reason the spurs destroyed the suns AGAIN cuz u guys always have an excuse

u can bet your car that if it the spurs had shaq every sun would be hanging on the diesels neck to send him to the line

thats one fat lazy motherfucker who if he were normal size wouldnt be anywhere near the nba

  • http://dimemag.com Austin Burton

The Spurs didn’t invent it; I wanna say it was Rick Adelman or Don Nelson, but I could very well be wrong. I think it was Larry Bird who had the Pacers foul Shaq so much in the 2000 Finals that in one game he set the playoff record for free throw attempts.

  • Ian the statboy

the west is stacked so i hope we get the easy match up again in the first round this season bring on the suns

  • Ian the statboy

yup attemps but nowhere near the made records

  • http://GEE2.com GEE…Chicken Noodle Soup

He been poppin a lot this offseason about D and how it wasn’t him and how he can play it. He better show and prove this coming up season.

  • Izzy

Ansonious — Dude, u gotta be kidding me. So what if they attack the fact that Shaq cant shoot free throws. Nobody complains when a coach runs a full court press cause the point cant break the press, or you overplay a shooter that cant handle. Its basketball. Just cause a player has a weakness in his game doesnt mean we should feel sorry for him and back off.

  • Ansonious

hey statboy it doesn’t come down to teams, players, or your bs. It’s about the integrity of the game you dumbass and let me guess your a spurs fan.

  • Ansonious

@ all of yall Whatever your all so right the only one who has a decent point is Izzy the rest of you can SUCK MY BALLS!

  • Ian the statboy

dont be mad suns fan hahahahaha
    u might beat us someday

  • Ian the statboy

u cant say that what i posted is bs
comon go read your first post there is some serious bs there

  • http://dimemag.com Austin Burton

@Ansonious — You can’t use the “integrity” argument and defend the Suns at every turn:

    -Raja Bell’s phantom flops
-Raja delivering clotheslines for no good reason
-Shaq flagrantly refusing to work on FT’s
    -Amare not playing defense
-Diaw coming into camp at 300 pounds

  • aeko

ansonious- so what your saying is to let shaq only shoot easy shots a few feet away from the rim and to not foul him. YOU are an idiot. do you know how to shoot a free-throw?

  • Ian the statboy

98 03 05 07 08 its not even fair (timmeh era 00 he was out of the playoffs)

  • Ian the statboy

lol aeko u r right this man is not thinking right
let shaq dunk but no fouling pleasee

  • Celts Fan

Here’s the thing, FTs are part of the game. If he can’t make them, it’s not up to the league to bail him out. Work harder or deal w/ it. and btw, they do this to Ben Wallace all the time, and I’m sure the hack a Dorsey’s right around the corner if he gets any tick. 1 dimensional players get exposed by this. I have no problem with it. It’s ugly and not exactly the proudest thing ever, but you play to win the game. You can’t just start eliminating (or creating) rules because someone can’t do the basics of hte game and doesn’t want to be embarrassed. The only options available should be either practice harder, sit on the bench during that time, or shut the fuck up.

  • http://GEE2.com GEE…Chicken Noodle Soup

lol I’ll kick you in them sh*ts pimpin lol.

  • Ansonious

Wow I can’t believe your all stuck on this, go ahead take a minute to read post#21, and that’s all I have to say to you haters out there. The only ? I have left for you guys is what is the opposite of above me?

  • Ansonious

    Oh wait go suns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Young Lebron 23

Amare can block shots and everything but he probably means team defense in practice. PRACTICE, WE TALKIN ABOUT PRACTICE MAN. NOT A GAME, NOT A GAME, PRACTICE! Had to throw that out.

  • Aaron

Amare has never made a commitment to D and I don’t believe he has the bball IQ to ever be truly great at it. It’s hard to accept as a Suns fan but it is the truth.

  • http://www.myspace.com/verbose1 sans

Ansonious, you are absolutely right. Intentional fouling, with the exception of stopping the clock, is unsportsmanlike and degrades the game as much as flopping (faking a foul) does. It’s disrespectful to ball, taking away from the fluidity and motion integral to the sport. Fuck that stupid cheap shit. Intentionally fouling so a player cannot tie or win a game with a shot, forcing them to take two freebies instead of the clutch 3 is bogus. It’s whack if it’s against Big Timmeh, Cactus, or Chuck Hayes (although multiple Chuck Hayes free throw sitings would be great to see, for the pure amusement; homey looks like someone scares him right at the end of his release).

And it’s not the same thing if a point can’t handle a trapping press. Intentional fouls, in the rulebook, are designated separate from common, unintentional fouls. They should be enforced like that. We are not talking about creating rules here, just enforcing them in the spirit under which they were created.

And Ansonious, the much hated on, you are absolutely right that Centaur can’t do anything offensively other than throw down on people. Sure, he swats some shots, hits the glass, but his offensive post moves are all eaten up like a meth fiend–just ghastly and wrong looking–when he ain’t dunkin on people. And Dwight can’t shoot frees either.

It’s amazing to me how much time Spurs fans spend online…I’m out like slapping the shit out of Chuck Hayes everytime he steps on the floor in order to amuse myself with his free throw shooting….

  • http://www.myspace.com/verbose1 sans

Chuck should really be a Globetrotter…or General/whoever the Globetrotters play

  • http://www.myspace.com/verbose1 sans

@ Mike…Amare is a basketball player first, athlete second. His O game is ridiculous, lots of jumpers, spin moves, shot fakes, and mean ass dunks.

  • JCarr

  • JCarr

    OOOPPPSSS Sorry!!! About THAT

  • http://myspace.com/bigfreeze101 Big Freeze

Coach D turned the Suns franchise around from an irrelevant team to a chip contender. They were the most entertaining team to watch before they copped Shaq. People need to quit hating on Coach D’Antoni and appreciate what he did for the NBA. If I wanted to watch nothing but fundamental basketball with great team D, I’de be a Spurs fan.

  • heartbreaker85

if amare was drafted by the spurs, he’d be glued to the bench. even s-jax had to learn how to stay in front of his man to get PT and if he wasn’t, they’d stick ayoung manu in there

  • mckcon

Show me one team or player that is a great defensively and defense isn’t made a priority by the head coach… I’ll wait… There are none. If the coach doesn’t make it a priority then it’s not going to happen.
If you ever played team ball you would know that.
All the best teams in league have one thing in common… not the players, bcuz all the teams have talented players. The common thread of the best teams in the NBA are the head coaches that can lead the team to win and play together.

  • lee

He’s talking about the deliberate fouls on Shaq at half court when he doesn’t have thee ball. Should be freethrows and the ball for fouling someone without the ball.

  • Mark

Man to man defense doesn’t require much outside of sheer effort.

Amaré was just denying responsibility for his past inability to play defense. This isn’t some peer pressure situation: just because player (A) doesn’t play D, doesn’t mean you don’t have to (especially when you’re in a league with the supposed best). Step your game up STAT, this season we’re watching for PROGRESS.

  • Zech

It’s true, STAT could play better defense…blame it on the knee injury…
