Mt. Vernon High School (NY) is traditionally a national powerhouse on the basketball court, having produced the likes of Ben Gordon, Gus Williams, Rodney McCray, big-time ‘08 West Virginia recruit Kevin Jones (Dime #34) and Class of ‘09 senior superstar Sherrod Wright (Dime #27) — in the Westchester County town that is home to celebs in other avenues like Denzel Washington, Diddy, Vanessa Williams and Dick Clark.
But there’s a significant risk that legendary coach Bob Cimmino’s Knights may not be able to field a team this season. School budget concerns have left the athletic program in need of about $300,000 if they hope to have winter sports this year. BG is hosting charity events in the area this weekend to raise money, and Denzel and Diddy have also stepped up to contribute.

Been away on vacation (Sunny Puerto Rico) and just read this post. Westchester county is a wealthy school district and many of these celebs and ballers could surely cover a mere 300,000 like it’s chump change. The problem in NY state is that the homeowners pay major taxes to cover school taxes. These celebs are probably droppin 30,000 a year as it is on school taxes even if they have no kids in shool. When a school district doesnt pass it’s budget the first thing that is threatened is Sports and Band. Many parents that didnt vote to pass the budget the first time come out and pass it the second time. Most times the budget passes, extracurricular activities come back (the superintendent and administration get their raises) and everybody is happy.
