Brandon Roy Has a Torn Meniscus, Will Get Surgery

For the first time all summer, the Trailblazer train has come to a halt. After snaring Jerryd Bayless in the draft (and then watching him give the Summer League the full monty), adding a super talent with Rudy Fernandez, and watching Greg Oden eat Channing Frye’s lunch in one-on-one workouts, the Blazers have received their first piece of bad news in a while: Brandon Roy will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair a torn meniscus this morning.

Roy is the centerpiece for everything in the Pacific Northwest (sorry, Seattle fans didn’t mean to rub it in), and thus any set-back is taken extremely seriously. With camp seven weeks away, Roy is in danger of missing some important pre-season runs that would help the new pieces (Oden, Fernandez) gel with the rest of the squad. However, with the first game of the season a full eleven weeks from now, there’s basically no doubt that Roy will be ready.

In fact, when Roy was a junior at Washington, he had the exact same procedure done to his right knee, and he rebounded at hyper-speed.

In three weeks he was back on the court, playing in a big-time game against No. 9-ranked North Carolina State.

Throughout his career, Roy’s biggest struggle hasn’t been knocking down jumpers or getting to the rim - it’s been staying healthy. Without No. 9 NC State three weeks away, he should give himself plenty of time to get back to 100% from this set-back and be ready to make a run at the playoffs.

This should allow Bayless to get some experience in the pre season.

  2. Crabhands says:

Roy knows, it isn’t how you start the season…

  3. Big V says:

They’ll be fine. I agree that having Bayless makes this situation that much more bearable.

  4. doc says:

Who cares if he misses the preseason. That shit dont mean nothing except for people trying to make the team. Its the same as football.Who watches after the 1rst quarter except if you got a family member out there.

  5. Coop says:

This is basically a non-story. I hope he takes his time with the rehab. Who cares if he even misses a few reg season games? dont rush back and everything will be cool in Portland.

  6. Logan Light says:

Not a big deal. A torn meniscus is painful because of swelling, but nothing that is going to be career threatening. Like Coop said - non-story.

Logan Light, that’s right on. I tore the meniscus in my left knee snowboarding a coupld seasons back and it ended my winter, but I was totally cool about 8 weeks after surgery and I’m not some super athlete with personal trainers and shit, so Roy will be all good by the start of the season.

For all readers that had basketball to change their life as a youth growing up, I know personally that basketball has changed my life and kept me out of trouble growing up, and is one my greatest passion in life. The “Get Kids in the Game” program is an effort to obtain donations of basketballs to go to children here in the United States and around the world.

Basketball arouses great passion and allows children to capture their own hoop dreams. Be it shooting the ball alone or sharing in the joy of the sport with classmates and teammates, you can give children the joy of dribbling, passing and shooting the basketball and seeing it rustle the cords of the net. Your donations help get kids in the game so they can shoot for hope.

For only $16, you can donate two basketballs to children in need. Let’s make a difference one child at a time.

He’s going to miss all the conditioning and be at a disadvantage when he comes back…everybody will be at full speed and he will play the rest of the year at a disadvantage…same thing happened to Bibby a couple years back where he missed camp with a foot injury and never had the conditioning he needed the rest of that year…

  10. AB_40 says:

let’s hope he doesn’t miss to many games. there was this guy on a team that missed the first 7 games of the season for his team last season don’t remember his name and they lost almost every one of those games then they missed the playoffs as the best team ever without making the playoffs.

Ok this is about S.Jackson and the warriors.

This will be a blow because fernandez and bayless will do just fine when the season roles along but at the start you need someone to show them the ropes. No offense but martel webster looks a lot less like a teacher then brandon roy.

  11. JC says:

Figures… What a shame. Hope he bounces back though!

  12. Joe says:

Reports from Oregon Live say that the surgery went just fine and that Roy will be back on the court in 4-6 weeks

  13. Young Lebron 23 says:

Hope he bounces back. Can you say Jerryd Bayless will drop 30+ on someone before he comes back.
