Breaking News: Celtics sign Darius Miles

Thanks to reader Weezy F., who first put us up on the news this morning that the Celtics have signed Darius Miles. Anyone affiliated with the Blazers would have had you believe that D-Miles’ knees were basically pudding at this point in his life, but after Portland finally found a doctor to declare his injuries as “career-ending” and waived him, Miles immediately started working out for other teams. And all reports were that he looked good.
The Celtics do have a hole at the three after losing James Posey to the Hornets, but is D-Miles the right guy to fill it? When was the last time he played (and we mean actually played) for a winning team? Isn’t he basically Ricky Davis without the volume turned up? You could argue that vets like KG, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce (???), plus a player-friendly coach in Doc Rivers will keep Miles focused and out of trouble, but Miles has run into drama everywhere he’s been. He famously even feuded with Mo Cheeks, one of the most likeable guys in the NBA. And with Boston having drafted J.R. Giddens to be an athletic wing presence, did they really need Darius Miles?
Do you think this was the right move for the Celtics?

1st!
Pretty ridiculous…he’s the LAST thing the Celtics (or any team that has plans on contending) need.

306 says:
D Miles is back!!! Its a solid move for the celt’s, either he contributes as a role player or fades into an afterthought…
He does have skills though, more then the other scrapes they could roll out.

Celts Fan says:
The only thing I’d call “right” about this is that it’s a non-guaranteed deal. This guy is a malcontent with baggage, and even worse, unlike Ricky Davis, he’s not even that good! I don’t buy the hype now cuz he’s never done anything - since HS anyway - to deserve it. Besides being pretty athletic (which you gotta assume is gone with his knees being declared career ending) he had absolutely no NBA skills to me anyway.
I asked this earlier on another post, but I’ll ask again. Can you be suspended for conduct detrimental to the team just for showing up?

fallinup says:
Ahhh, I was wondering where the Danny Ainge of old would come back.
Darius Miles??? Really?, friggin really?…Exactly how many games do you think Boston will play before KG socks Darius in his nose?
August 22nd, 2008 at 1:23 pm
shake&bake says:
You have to imagine that he has changed his attitude after being told his career was over. He has to be willing to do whatever it takes to help a team, especially a championship team. If he can get back close to what he was before, he will be a great 6th/7th man for them.
August 22nd, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Kobeef says:
What I really want to know is what does this mean for Portland - do they now have to pay Darius since his injury was obviously not career ending?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Time will tell. People can “evolve.” Let’s see what happens.
August 22nd, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Celts Fan says:
@Kobeef, they had to pay him either way. The $$$ didn’t count against the cap though since he’d been forced to retire by medical reasons. If he plays 10 reg. season games though, that # goes back against their cap.
August 22nd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Celts Fan says:
@Shake & Bake - you’d have to imagine lots of things, but until he proves it, I don’t buy it. He’s had issues with EVERYONE. Why would that have changed? If anything, I could see him being worse (on the court) trying to prove he’s back, forcing the action, trying to be TMac. The problem though, is that he has no J - umm, I mean no jumper - he has PLENTY of Js. We should see a spike in the sale of candy and Doritos in Boston though which should do wonders for the struggling convenience stores in the area, so we’ve got that going for us…

August 22nd, 2008 at 1:44 pm
alex says:
its not a risky move for boston. he’d have no issues whatsoever over there since kg would simply have none of it. its a move that can’t really hurt boston, with a good upside. They’re going to pay him peanuts and its worth the risk. Remember, winning cures a lot of problems!
August 22nd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Kobeef says:
@Cetls
Who do you root for:
a)Darius to play at least 10 reg season games or
b)the Blazers and hope he gets cut before game 10?
August 22nd, 2008 at 1:56 pm
doc says:
I dont see nothing wrong with it.It aint like Ainge brung him in to be a starter. He’s there to sit his ass on the pine and when he get put in try to contribute. If he turns consistent thats whats up. If not sit with Scal.

August 22nd, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Celts Fan says:
@Kobeef, you route for him to get cut. I don’t see how this was a better move than purueing a guy like Devean George. Assuming Darius is a choir boy, there’s still a HUGE health concern with the knee. How’s it gonna handle the rigors of an 82 game schedule (wait, 72 game schedule, he’s suspended for 10 games for a FOURTH positive weed test. at least he’s in the right color uni…)
I hope this is just insurance in case Bill Walker and JR Giddens aren’t healthy/good enough for this year.

Celts Fan says:
All I know is it’s a sure sign you haven’t panned out when the best game you’ve played since being drafted was in the movie “The Perfect Score,” and just like every team he’s ever been on, that movie was a complete joke and did nothing.

Desrat says:
D miles is still young. We are condemning a cat for the way he acted when he was 22, rich and without a role model. If people still held me to what I did when I was 22 it would n’t be prettyu. If any of you cats older than 25 want to be judged by what you were like when you were 22 then you mad some poor choices sense then.
August 22nd, 2008 at 2:37 pm
shake&bake says:
@ Celts - I was just trying to say that he got a pretty big reality check. I don’t know what else a man needs to straighten himself out. If he still doesn’t get it, then get rid of him. I don’t know how much they’re paying him, but it can’t be too much, so he is a low risk investment.
I can’t argue about the Dortios sales.
August 22nd, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Celts Fan says:
@Desrat, I completely agree with that thinking in most cases. The problem is, Darius has a continuous pattern of doing this. It’s not one or 2 incidents. It’s a CONTINUOUS string of problems EVERYWHERE he’s been and he was tested positive for smoking tree for the FOURTH time in the past off-season, so it’s not something he’s made a huge effort to stop. Again, he’s not a terrible guy. He’s never hit a woman or killed someone or something unforgivable. I just don’t want him on my team…

shake&bake says:
I’m 23 and I don’t want to be judge on how I was when I was 22. Haha
August 22nd, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Celts Fan says:
man, I’m 25 and I don’t want to be judged on how I was last night! The red flags to me are that he’s had the same problems in a few different places AND he just tested positive for weed for the 4th time recently so it doesn’t exactly seem like he’s working too hard to change.

George W Kush Sr says:
I been saying this for years, DMiles needs to play with KG. Its his fucking Idol for God’s sake! And who better than KG to light a fire in Miles ass?
I’m not saying that Miles doesn’t have his faults, but I cant wait for him to show all his haters up.
SMH at punks mentioning that he tested positive for smoking weed, all hypocrites are bitches, yall telling me none of you drink? So its ok to get drunk, but its not ok to smoke weed? Why, because weed is a drug? Says who? Its worse to drink a bottle of Black label then it is to smoke an ounce of Kush. But because the government says alcohol is ok but Kush isnt, you bitches are faulting Miles for smoking? You hypocrites need to shut da fuck up, and go suck on some Jesus juice

smity far away says:
@celts- let the george kush post go…
August 22nd, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Celts Fan says:
@GWK - man, I agree with EVERYTHING you just said. The problem though, is that the NBA rules don’t and you get THREE CHANCES to test positive without a suspension (and they don’t test in the off-season, so these were all IN-SEASON positives.) After #3, you’d think you’d put it down during the season. If you don’t, it’s more a reflection of lack of commitment than anything else. Even Sheed and Damon “I sneak my weed through metal detectors in tin foil” Stoudemire never got nabbed 4 times.
and that’s just the most recent thing. The constant feuding with coaches is infinitely more concerning to me. Doc is a nice guy that seems like everyone would like, but so is Mo Cheeks…
August 22nd, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Reed Ewing Frazier says:
@Desrat Yeah everyone deserves a chance I think he is a low risk investment and the BIG three will keep him in check both of his prior teams didn’t have a veteran presence. Plus cats on here seem forget his first two seasons with the Clippers he played good. That Clippers team should have been what the Blazers are now but they traded Q Rich and Lamar Odom too soon.
@Celts Fan You should be on your knees thanking GOD you got D Miles now you get to see the two fist head bump in person I wish Q Rich would still do it for my team(lol)
KNICKS UP!! all the rest down!!

Lady Luck says:
He should have went to college. He happened to be one of the many unsuccessful making the transition from HS/AAU ball to NBA; Guys need to understand that just because you are the best at your rec center or HS league, doesn’t mean you are NBA ready.
I agree though that Boston doesn’t really have anything to lose. They are a veteran team, which is just the environment he needs. They are a winning organization, so his half-assness(is that a word?) will not be tolerated. And they have Kevin Garnett. So if it isn’t working out, they’ll cut him and his career will be officially over. If Darius can contribute off the bench, he could be a good asset. This is his last chance (imo) and I think he is in the ideal environment for a fresh start.

DMiles doesn’t go half-assed, just completely high.
August 22nd, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Michorizo says:
The fault in Miles is not that he smokes weed, it’s that his job doesn’t allow it and therefore it leads to suspension, which hurts the team …kinda like me at work…There is nothing wrong with being on the internet but if my boss catches me on it, it could lead to either suspension or termination.

Homeless J says:
Do you have Cold Stone Creamery on the east coast? It’s an ice cream shop that single handedly added about 40 pounds to D-Miles. I guess it’s kind of good that he’s only been seen going in and out of that place because at least he’s just a lazy fat fuck getting stoned and eating ice cream and he’s not like Z-Bo was, getting charged with rape in the last few months he was here. (him and one of his homeboys had some hookers in a Portland hotel room and they were getting fucked up and fucking and apparently one of them charged dude with rape because he tried to put it in her butt and Kobe her or something. eventually the charges were dropped, I’m guessing he paid them off or somebody’s lawyer realized that hookers are not very reliable on the stand in court.)
personally I hope he blows both knees out again in his first game back so his old salary doesn’t count against Portland’s cap. or he tries to go Sprewell on Doc Rivers and Doc knocks him out.

Lady Luck says:
From ESPN:
Reportedly Miles’ next NBA season, assuming there is one, will begin with a ten-game suspension, reportedly for taking the drug phentermine, which has been described as a diet pill.

Reed Ewing Frazier says:
@GWK and Celts Fan You both made good points on that subject. Word to Cheech and Chong!!
@ Celts Fan Doc Rivers is nice but he would beat D Miles ass he is a former Knick. As far as M Cheeks he would have kick his ass but the front office in Portland are pussies and wouldn’t back him up that is why he left them chumps for Philly.

Celts Fan says:
honestly though, my concerns are much more about the knee (if it was declared career ending, how will it stand up to a 72 game season?) I also am not a huge fan of his game. He never developed a jumper and his athleticism is probably gone thanks to the knee problems. He has a non-guaranteed deal, so you’d assume his attitude should be okay and he’s (hopefully) put down the pipe til whenever the Celtics season ends. I just don’t see the fit and don’t think the risk is worth the reward (if he makes the team, what are the chances he misses less than 20 games? that knee can’t possibly be okay for all of them, right?)
Everyone deserves a 2nd chance and I’m glad for him that he gets to continue his career (not a fan of his at all, but no one should have their dream straight taken from them cuz their body betrayed them,) I just wish he’d gone anywhere else and Danny’d gone after Devean George or Bobby Jones or anyone of that ilk w/out the baggage and HUGE injury concerns…

Homeless J says:
The worst thing about D-Miles (that everyone is overlooking) is that he just doesn’t give a shit about the game of basketball.
He’s said that himself in an interview he did for the Oregonian a while back. He has no real love for the game. He just was athletic, and tall, and could play basketball, and that was the only way he was ever going to make a living for himself.
He doesn’t care about playing at all unless he’s winning. He sat out a year more than he probably had to just so he wouldn’t have to play for a rebuilding Portland squad. He sat on his ass and got really fat eating ice cream instead of training hard for a comeback to justify the insanely huge contract Portland gave him. Instead of being grateful for that huge contract by trying to give back to the team that gave it to him, he became an idiotic, childish malcontent who took his ball and went home (and then to Boston). It seems to me more like he’s even going out of his way to try to fuck Portland over just by trying to come back so all that money will count against the cap. That sounds like a paranoid conspiracy theory but from paying close attention to him for years, I know that he’s just that type of guy. He’s not only a malcontent, he’s going way out of his way to be one.
Yeah he’ll probably care more and put up more of an effort if he’s on the NBA champion team, but he’s also still a childish malcontent who’s not young enough to justify that type of attitude anymore. Like I said, I hope he blows out both knees and even grows an unprecedented third knee and blows that out too.

George W Kush Sr says:
At Celts fan, I completely agree with your statement regarding his clashes with his coaches, that is a very bad sign regarding his attitude. I think with KG, Miles isn’t gonna get much room to be a punk, which I know he acted like on more than a few occasions. And because KG is there, it would be the best environment for him to play to his potential, and the Kid’s got game.
I’m not even the biggest Miles fan, but i do think he’s a good cheap pick up for the Celts.
My main problem is that there are a few things that get mentionned about a few players that i think are just cheap shots.
I agree with you that the knucklehead needs to stop getting caught smoking weed, millions of smokers who dont make millions of dollars manage not to get caught, he most def has to manage his shit better.
I read my first post again, just wanted to clear up that i wasnt going after your post or nothing like that, just overall shit i hear and read

do any of u responders play basketball? evidentally not because d miles has something to prove and boston is the perfect team cause he doesn’t have that pressure to b the man all he has to do is produce and stay outta trouble and with k.g. on ya team if u got talent he is gonna push it outta u he’s been known to do that and 2 for all u supposed 2 b basketball players if this might b ya last chance to get money in the league ur gonna play ya heart out. so I think its a smart move cause it puts at best a starter on ya bench. he could be a great 6th man..

Phil T. Rich says:
I think it isn’t a bad deal… It’s not like the Celtics have much to lose… and since the Celts are a veteran team, he probably has little to no influence on anyone on the team. Let’s give him a chance to make a comeback… I like his chances of a comeback better than Shaun Livingston. I hope he works out, but hey, the Celts can still cut his ass…
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:23 pm
The Worm says:
It’s a good move. Boston has nothing to lose. Either Miles will play with winners and pick up winning habits, or he will fuck up and get cut from the team. He is capable of scoring 8 pts and a couple of rebounds a game. That’s all Boston needs him for.

jace says:
the article i read said he pretty much still has to prove himself before the season starts.. soo theres still a chance they’ll just let him go.. plus.. with an ultimatum like that… ud think they signed him for a pretty small contract.. meaning theres not much at risk here.
i think its hit or miss with this signing.. but we’ll only see how it fits when the season starts. if they hit.. itll be a NICE find considering theyre all about defense.. and becuz of his long arms, quickness, and athleticism (dunno if he still has it cuz his legs are a question) he still has potential to be decent. prolly wont be asked to too much more than just dunking.
if its miss.. who cares? just release him. so all in all.. good sign.
